190 Free Blog Hosts Update, 12/9/07: I had a closer look at this list. Some are definitely not free; they just have free trials. But if you’re looking for free, you’ll find it here. The reason I published the link, though, was because it is one more sign of just how many people are blogging. Yikes!

“The new rules of communication for Internet conglomerates seem to be: if you have a great idea, host a press conference. If you aren?t really sure, bite your tongue, flip a switch, and see what hits the fan. BLOGGER!” - Rich Becker, Communicating Change: Blogger Hits the Fan, at the blog “Words. Concepts. Strategies” Read the whole post. It’s worth it.

Copyscape for Bloggers ? (Anti -Scraping and Anti-Copying Tool )An idea I posted to BlogCatalog to help make Copyscape useful for bloggers. No discussion so far, probably because I posted an idea instead of asking a question. Silly me.

Joseph Stalin  (1878-1953) anyone? Here is a video that shows a minute?s worth of propaganda posters with background music designed to make you want to willingly and gladly subordinate yourself to this brutal dictator. And you?ll feel proud to do it. Or not. Stalin?s image has seen remarkable and frightening improvement in Russia, as I point out in a post on Clio and Me called Good Old Stalin.

Mädchen in Uniform  (1931, German with English subtitles. This is the full movie in nine parts. Use the buttons on the right or left to move through those parts. The movie is set in Germany before the First World War, but it is a Weimar product through and through. Some viewers will be taken with the ambiguous lesbian undertones. Others will notice the critique of old Prussian martial values. And then there?s the fact that the actors are all women, and the credits show women?s names too.

Blogger's Doublespeak
2007-12-03 01:45:00
Interesting. Blogger is actually writing about the addition of a new feature, OpenID, as if that is all its change were about. There is utter silence on its Blogger in Draft blog about the removal of a feature, the optional URL field for people who want to comment. Come on, Google! Your good, not evil. Let me keep believing in you. [Hat tip to Tiffany for making this distinction clear in her comments on the Blogger in Draft post. She?s got a bunch of blogs, including Rockstorie and What?s Wrong..?]
When Brilliant Men Have Dumb Ideas
2007-12-02 20:03:00
When Brilliant Men Have Dumb Ideas Calling All Bloggers! Blogger (aka Blogspot) has decided to remove the URL field that bloggers can use when entering a comment. In other words, they?re making it harder for bloggers to network. I just don?t get it. If you use Blogger or comment on other blogs at Blogspot, please read the above article by the ever insightful Tiffany Sanders. If you like it, you might even Digg or Stumble it. (These links here are for her post, not mine.)  If this has really got your goat, you can also Digg or Stumble a piece by Matt Nutts, a helpful community member over at BlogCatalog.
StumbleUpon
2007-12-01 23:58:00
StumbleUpon is a great resource for finding interesting things for your tumblelog. Perhaps other tumblers stumble too? I would also suggest that StumbleUpon might be a good way to help get random web-surfing traffic. Many bloggers see little value in StumbleUpon, because the surfers come for only a short time, amuse themselves, and leave. But isn?t that close enough to tumbling to be a potentially good thing? So I stumbled some of the tumblelogs I read. One of them had already been stumbled by someone else, but the others not. Perhaps one stumble will get a little traffic, though I suspect other tumblers might need to do some stumbling too. Besides getting traffic, which you might not care a gnat?s whit about,  you can also help familiarize random surfers with this super cool genre. By the way, my StumbleUpon page link is in the side bar here. Happy random surfing. Here?s to lots more serendipity in all of our internet lives!

Blogger's Unite: Blogging For Hope
2007-12-01 20:02:00
Blogger's Unit e: Blogging For Hope This time it?s about acts of kindness. The idea sounded too vague to me, but the consensus at BlogCatalog seems to be that lots of people being kind and writing about it can have a big, if hard-to-measure impact. The cynic in my yawns. The optimist in me marked 12/17/2007 in my calendar. Lots of kind acts on one day? Why not? And maybe some of us will get in the habit. No need to play the role of Scrooge here, not even if this weren?t happening during the holiday season.

“Thanks to the person who loaded my Starbucks card so that I?d have someplace to go to during these holiday days when very few businesses were open.” - Kevin Barbieux at The Homeless Guy.What a great idea for a contribution. I?d like to thank that contributor too. On a related note, my son recently scolded me for sometimes giving change to a homeless guy. He says they use it for alcohol or drugs. I said I didn?t think that was the case for the people in question, but that in any case the homeless also deserve the dignity of deciding for themselves how they are going to spend their money. My son has a point, but I think I do too.

A new kind of email spam
2007-11-30 14:40:00
Apparently because I have some blogs, some companies now feel free to contact me directly via email. They say something nice about the blog in question in one line before they turn to pitching their own product. Got my first one yesterday and my second today. These are targeted messages, but they?re still unsolicited junk mail, that is, spam. If they really wanted to get my attention, they would forget about promoting their product and simply get into a real conversation about whatever I?m blogging about.

The Internet's Affect on Reading Habits
2007-11-30 14:30:00
The internet has reduced many of our attention spans. The tumblelog genre is a case in point. But Tiffany Sanders has noticed that the internet has also encouraged her to read more deeply. She?s actually using hyperlinks in articles to inform herself about something and then return to the article.
