Lipstick In School
2007-09-06 22:55:00
Lifted from Bortz.com:According to a news report, a certain school in Garden City, MI was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the washroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. He called all the girls to the washroom and met them there with the maintenance man. He explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, he asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip ...

NCLB - TEST THE KIDS
2007-08-03 07:13:00
LIFTED FROM the SCHOOLS MATTER Blog:This space explores issues in public education policy, and it advocates for a commitment to and a re-examination of the democratic purposes of schools. If there is some urgency in the message, it is due to the current reform efforts that are based on a radical re-invention of education, now spearheaded by a psychometric blitzkrieg of "metastasizing testing" aimed at dismantling a public education system that took almost 200 years to build.

Lifted from EGO DIALOGUESA little boy was doing his math homework. He said to himself, ?Two plus five, that son of a bitch is seven. Three plus six, that son of a bitch is nine.?His mother heard what he was saying and gasped ?What are you doing??The little boy answered ?I'm doing my math homework, Mom.??And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?? the mother asked.?Yes?, he answered. Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, ?What are you teaching my son in math??The teacher replied, ?Right now, we are learning addition.?The mother asked, ?And are you teaching them to say two plus two, that son of a bitch is four??After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, ?What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four.?

However its viewed, Separate will always be inherently unequal
2007-07-03 01:35:00
The recent Supreme Court ruling was a punch in the stomach, it took the wind out of me. After sometime to digest it, it still tastes bad. I don't trust the theory that students will receive budgeting inaccordance with their needs and that money is the solution to the problem. I agree that forced integration left much to be desired and that the seperation of the races has improved little since Brown. But Brown, was an ideal worthy of striving to accomplish, not to be viewed as Chief Justice Roberts has as "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race." (NY Times, 6/28/07); sounds a little bit like "Just say no".Though there is some truth in his statement, but he and we must go further and END ALL DISCRIMINATION whether is based on CLASS, COUNTRY of ORIGIN, LANGUAGE, SEXUAL ORIENTATION or any other aspect of who we are, that we use to seperates ourselves from one another. For a much more articulate interpretation and response pleas...

Excerpts from John Taylor Gatto - The Seven Lesson Schoolteacher
2007-06-28 05:08:00
The license I hold certifies that I am an instructor of English language and English literature, but that isn't what I do at all. I don't teach English, I teach school -- and I win awards doing it.He was named New York City Teacher of the year in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991 Teaching means different things in different places, but seven lessons are universally taught from Harlem to Hollywood Hills. They constitute a national curriculum you pay for in more ways than you can imagine, so you might as well know what it is. You are at liberty, of course, to regard these lessons any way you like, but believe me when I say I intend no irony in this presentation. These are the things I teach, these are the things you pay me to teach. Make of them what you will."Look...at the seven lessons of school teaching --1. CONFUSION2. CLASS POSITION 3. INDIFFERENCE4. EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCY5. INTELLECTUAL DEPENDENCY6. PROVISIONAL SELF-ESTEEM7. ONE CAN'T HIDEall ...

Next Step for Schools- L. A. Times 6/3/07
2007-06-04 00:16:00
It is crucial that the new board set priorities, demand accountability and ensure that children get the great education they deserve.Excerpts:Don't forget the audit. - The new board and Supt. David L. Brewer should welcome the scrutiny. The Spider-Man rule. - Uncle Ben's line from "Spider-Man" is as apt for L.A. schools as it was for Peter Parker: With great power comes great responsibility. Charter teachers have more authority because they put their jobs on the line; they can be fired for poor performance and charter schools can be closed for failing to raise test scores. The district should hand more control to schools only with strict accountability. It's about teaching. - Redirecting power, making schools smaller ? these might help, but they shouldn't be confused with real reform, which is about instruction, not structure: fine teachers, strong curriculum (that means keeping LAUSD's highly successful Open Court reading program), excellent textbooks.Learn from charters. - Cha...

Test-takers, Not Students By Janet Ewell
2007-05-28 19:43:00
excerpted from the Los Angeles Times 05/26/2007:In a crescendo of circular logic, "high-achieving schools" have become those whose students are successful test-takers, without asking if they are prepared for work, for college, for citizenship or for a meaningful life.

Excerpts from Dan Brown's Analysis of Presidential Candidates on Education
2007-05-22 22:11:00
The Democrats (excerpted from 4/16/07)Most funding for public education in America comes from states, but the overarching legislation and guidance for how to allocate those funds comes from the federal government. Currently, this influence is embodied in the stultifying mandates, impossible accountability goals, and all-important high-stakes standardized testing of the No Child Left Behind Act. Strong guidance from the executive branch and legislative branches of the federal government is necessary to bring about the school and community reforms needed to begin to pull America public schools out of the uninspired quagmire that they are in.Our next president must address this dire American need.In my previous post, I combed the office and presidential committee websites of Republicans Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Sam Brownback. My goal was to determine the candidates' stances on education, and my findings were unsatisfying. McCain had not a word about education on hi...
