2008-04-09 17:27:00 You asked and Prof . Ricky Lim has listened-- the W. SyCip Graduate School of Business has replied to the questions posed in the open Q & A in the last post. Issues like career placement, accreditation, education quality, the MBA program are some of the swirling issues that have hovered over this blog this past week.I'm sure everyone has anticipated what Prof. Lim has to say so here are his replies to your queries:RAL: First of all, thanks to everyone for waiting patiently. I was in Indonesia last week and teaching all this week. This is the first breather I have had.I see many similar questions and I hope I can answer them without redundancy. I welcome all ongoing queries, but please bear with me if I am unable to answer right away. Salamat.Q: does the management still plan to reaquire the equis accreditation? What's the real status of the aacsb accreditation? im just wondering 'coz when i checked the school's website, the two logos (equis and aacsb) were already gone.RAL... More About: Answers
Ask Prof. Ricky Lim
2008-04-04 07:16:00 In light of recent events pertaining to the EQUIS accreditation, I have asked Prof . Ricky Lim to hold an open Question and Answer session for The AIM Blogger. I'm thankful Prof. Lim accepted my invitation-- Given that he is the Associate Dean of AIM's W. SyCip Graduate School of Business, I think he is in a very good position to address the comments and concerns that have been raised lately. Here are the ground rules for the Q & A:Questions must be posted as a comment on THIS blog post only;People may leave questions anonymously; Please be clear with what question/s you want to be answered; Please avoid foul or offensive language; With that, I'm starting the thread with a few questions from the comments from the previous post:As a recent admit, this is a very serious issue for me .What should i take from this news ? Could change my decision to join .What else? the school is screwed! from the president, associate dean, all the way to the professors!.. They are politician minded n...
AIM, EQUIS & AACSB
2008-03-28 09:44:00 Take note of this post's title because that may the last time those three will appear together. The news of AIM losing the European Foundation for Management Development (EMFD) EQUIS accreditation and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International accreditation almost simultaneously has reached the media. A Business story from the Manila Standard Today entitled "Short of AIM" discloses that AIM lost the EQUIS and let the AACSB accreditations in the wake of events critical to the school. From the article: According to the grapevine, AIM no longer sought to renew the American accreditation and allowed it to lapse this year after having been informed of the European setback. The loss of the industry accreditation comes not only as AIM celebrates its 40th anniversary but also at a time when many of its board of trustees, including chairman Jose Cuisia Jr. and vice chairman Armin Luistro, are leading protest actions against Gloria Macapagal Arroyo over, ...
Missing the Baguio Trip
2008-03-26 08:51:00 One of the traditions that an MBA class in AIM follows is the Baguio Trip and a stay at the AIM Conference Center Baguio (formerly known as the Igorot Lodge). This activity is really a mix of classes and R&R since Baguio is considered the "Summer Capital of the Philippines" for its cool climate and nice mountain views. Our class had its trip scheduled from March 25-March 27, 2008 (Tuesday to Thursday). No thanks to a bout with flu, I wasn't able to go to Baguio. I guess I'll be know as the "Sickly guy in class" after being the "Blogger dude" and a member of the "Punjabi Pinoys." I really wanted to go-- I had my bags packed, I already had arrangements which room to stay, and when I started feeling sick during the weekend, I really loaded up on medication and even went to see the school doctor. I actually was planning on going even though I wasn't feeling all well, but the doctor said it was best for me to stay here in Manila and rest. The class bus was supposed to leave at 5:30 ... Corporate Blogging & Online Reputation Management Seminar
2008-03-25 15:34:00 Thanks to the very good reception to the Corporate Blogging seminar I organized last March 7, 2008, I have been encouraged to do a follow-up to my project for one of my classes in the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). The last event, "Corporate Communications 2.0: Corporate Blogging" was able to raise PhP 19,500 and all proceeds went to the GILAS Project of the Ayala Foundation. I have been informed that this amount will be used to provide internet connection for one year to a public school in the rural areas. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those who supported the past seminar. The upcoming seminar is entitled "Corporate Blogging & Online Reputation Management Seminar ," a series of talks from industry experts that focuses on blogging and improving a company's online presence. To give everyone an idea, the Corporate Blogging & Online Reputation Management Seminar is primarily intended for: Business executives who recognize the promise of blogs for viral marke...
(200 and) 28 Days Later
2008-03-20 14:37:00 Given how things have been extra tense and stressful lately in the MBA program, I can't help but tie things to one of my favorite movies, 28 Days Later. 28 Days Later, as Wikipedia would put it, "depicts the breakdown of society following the accidental release of a highly contagious virus and focuses upon the struggle of four survivors to cope with the ruination of the life they once knew." Hmmm... sounds about right. In the movie, the virus that ravaged civilization was called the Rage Virus and it took 28 days for the virus to turn normal people into savage, rage-filled beings. Technically, it has been 228 days since the first 16-month MBA program was rolled out. (Has it been that long?) and I wonder if MBA life has "infected" the class to make us savage, stressed-out folks .The film also describes the infection cycle in 28 days. Here's my timeline for the our 228 days in AIM:Day 1 - a typical student is excited and hopeful that MBA classes would be a worthwhile learning experie...
AIM for the Win! Part 2
2008-03-19 08:24:00 The AIM sports teams have made strides for this year's campaign for the Inter-MBA Friendship Games. After languishing at the cellar of the standings last year, the AIM badminton, basketball and volleyball teams are all playing for 2nd runner-up (after sports powerhouses Ateneo Graduate School of Business and De La Salle Professional Schools). The teams' performance in the tournament may be considered a quantum leap, considering the school's small population and little awareness and support from the school community. I would imagine the teams doing better if people took the time to cheer on the players for moral support. I'm sure athletes out there know how a rabid crowd can boost a team's morale and uplift the individual athlete. Think Olympics, or think World Cup.In any case, it's good the sports teams have fared very well so far. I hope this could be a good jumping point for the next Inter-MBA campaign. :) More About: Part
When Evening Falls So Hard
2008-03-14 15:59:00 When you're down and out,When you're on the street,When evening falls so hardI will comfort you.The verses above come from "Bridge Over Troubled Water," a song by Simon & Garfunkel. I realized the song has much relevance to our MBA batch as the final grades for the first five quantitative ("quant") subjects our class has taken.Sadly to say, there were classmates of mine who had trouble meeting the eligibility requirements. In the MBA program, there is 15 units worth of classes considered as quantitative, and an MBA student is required to pass 75% of quantitative subjects (Language of Business, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management 1, Economics & Management of Cost and Profit). That means if you do not pass 3.75 units worth of subjects, you will no longer be eligible for the MBA program; the subjects we got earlier have a total of 12 units. It's hard to believe that this is the last day for some of us here. The atmosphere in class became more tense as the day passed,... More About: Hard , Falls , Evening
Michelle Boquiren talks to the MBA Class
2008-03-13 10:05:00 For our Human Behavior in Organizations (HBO) class yesterday, Prof. Jun Borromeo invited Michelle Boquiren, AIM alumna and manager at the Investec Group, a special banking firm. She finished her MBA degree in 2000 and she had worked with Merrill Lynch and Overture Financial Services. I was lucky to bring my camera along, so I got a few shots: Michelle gave an overview of her company shared how the company's culture can do a lot for job satisfaction and productivity. She related how the open culture in Investec is quite different from big companies (Merrill Lynch) and start-ups (Overture). Furthermore, Michelle related how life is at New York and how AIM helped her become the leader who runs Investec's business in the Americas. The talk was very interesting and a good preview of the life some of our class will lead in the future. (Provided, of course, we pass our subjects :P) More About: Class
Accommodations
2008-03-12 12:56:00 After the big events last week, such as the International Students' Night, the AIM Grand Alumni Homecoming and my walkabout, I feel this week has been a slide despite the work we have to do.But one thing that has kept things interesting for us MBA students is the coming Baguio trip in the last week of March. Classes that week will be held at the AIM Conference Center - Baguio (ACCB) and students, by default, will stay during a period of three days and two nights. The reason why I say the trip is interesting because there has been some little tension created by everyone's search for accommodations-- people are looking for the best places to stay outside of the ACCB; and for the people staying in ACCB, looking for the people to share rooms with since there's a three person limit per room.I don't know if this phenomenon is exclusive to Asians, but most of the students feel uncomfortable asking people of they could join a group in a room or place and some students would feel bad if ...
Asian High at Boni High: AIM 40th Grand Alumni Homecoming
2008-03-10 12:05:00 The Asian Institute of Management celebrated its 40th year anniversary and Grand Alumni Homecoming last March 7, 2008 at the Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City. I've blogged about the preview of the Asian High at Boni High and event is as good as advertised. The homecoming party was a spectacle with musical diva Rachel Alejandro opening the show. Apart from the great curtain raiser, the night's entertainment was superb-- The Batch '73 band performed hits from the 1960's and, of course, the Bollywood dance numbers from the International Students' Night was included in the progam (ehem, my personal highlight of the evening):The food was great, lots of freebies for everyone and I got to meet a few AIM alumni. Great evening, if you ask me. Kudos to the organizers of Asian High at Boni High!
Punjabi Pinoys
2008-03-08 03:21:00 The International Students' Night was celebrated in AIM last March 6, 2007. The event was huge as distinguished guests and the AIM Board of Governors and Board of Trustees were in attendance. It was also a venue for a lot of student walkabout projects, such as the Cultural Fashion Show (from Arpita Maity and Renu Kerketta), Guitar Duo performance (from Ravi Shekhar and Preetam Chandra), the Filipiniana Cultural show (from Rosie Avila), to mention a few.My personal highlight of the day was the walkabout project by my classmate Kanishka Bhargava. He choreographed and produced the Indian Bollywood-style dance numbers on the show. The first one was the "Mauja" and the second one was the "Punjabi Pinoys". If you ask me, the Punjabi Pinoys was the number that brought the house down; here' the video:I have to admit my bias here: I'm the guy wearing the gold vest on the left side of the stage. :P The other members of the Punjabi Pinoys are Bok Lamayan, Gino Romero, Neil Risos, and Paolo ...
Live Blogging at Bridges: Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace, Part 2
2008-03-05 07:51:00 The Peace Foundation's Bridges : Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace forum continues its final leg here in the Asian Institute of Management with a keynote from former World Bank president James Wolfensohn and like my last post on the forum, I'm blogging live. Mr. Wolfensohn's keynote is entitled "Beyond East-West, North-South - Peace and prosperity in a four speed world."Ayala Corporation CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala gave the opening remarks and Wolfensohn's introduction was given by World Bank Philippines Country Director Bert Holfman.--Mr. Wolfensohn just gave his talk and while it was insightful, he was barely audible. :(--PHINMA President Ramon R. del Rosario, Jr. is the first reactor. His reaction to the keynote is rather tied to the issues the Philippines are encountering right now-- how corruption in a country can derail development. I like how he points out that how long can we accept "stability" as a reason to keep silent on corruption on high levels. He's all for... More About: Blogging , Live
Live Blogging at the Ramon Magsaysay Award 50th Anniversary
2008-03-04 05:49:00 I'm blogging here at the AIM Conference Center, the venue for the 5oth Anniversary Launch of the Ramon Magsaysay Award . The Ramon Magsaysay Award has been regarded as the Asia's Nobel Prize and the theme for its golden year is "50 Years of honoring Greatness of Spirit in Asia."The launch was hosted by Cheche Lazaro and highlighted by the video conference dialogue with two Ramon Magsaysay laureates: Jon Ungphakorn of Thailand (2005 awardee for Government Service) and Arvind Kejriwal of India (2005 awardee for Emergent Leadership). Several youth leader were invited to participated in the dialogue. An interesting point I picked up was that it was only this millennium that India recognized the right to information as a basic human right, as stated by Mr. Kejriwal. Also in attendance were Senator Ramon Magsaysay, Jr., Former award trustee and artist Jim Paredes, former COMELEC Chair Christian Monsod, Ayala Corporation CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala II and current trustee and our Econo... The Walkabout Cooperative
2008-03-03 12:54:00 I've been devoting a good portion of my time for the past few weeks preparing for my walkabout. (For those who do not follow this blog, the walkabout is one of our major projects in our Human Behavior in Organizations class). In fact, I've been very busy promoting my project, Corporate Communications 2.0: Corporate Blogging, via internet marketing. The experience of promoting has been far from bump-free, but that's the way things go.It is this promotion of walkabout projects that prompted me and my classmate Prashant Batra to have a tie-up in promoting each other's projects and even opening the cross-promotion arrangement to the whole class. I sent out an email to the MBA class, inviting everyone interested on the initiative that is built on the "I scratch you back, you scratch mine" honor system. The initiative was named The Walkabout Cooperative and its mission is to help all the members' walkabouts become a success. There are people who responded and here's the list of th...

Jun Lozada in AIM/Big Makati Rally
2008-02-29 08:33:00 A quick post: Things are getting crazy here in the AIM Campus as it is in the middle of a big public protest action against the Arroyo Administration's corruption here in Makati City. But the reason why things are more unsettled here in campus is because senate star witness Rodolfo 'Jun' Lozada is here! Reporters, media folks and protesters are filling up the main lobby with cars struck in traffic jams all over the place. Outside is just loud with car horns, sirens and people with megaphones. Totally crazy... in a good patriotic way, of course.UPDATE:I decided to attend the big rally as an observer along with other MBA students, three of which were Indians. As we walked to the Ninoy Aquino monumebt Paseo De Roxas Avenue, I got to know more about the Indians' view of "rallies." They said they were apprehensive to go with us because in India, a rally connotes rioting-- more like mobs burning cars, breaking windows and looting. One of the Indian students jokingly said he was "disappo... More About: Rally

Business Lessons from American Gangster
2008-02-27 16:37:00 I've planned to write something about the film "American Gangster ," starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, since I watched it last month. The film is set in the 1960's and it is about the rise and fall of an American drug dealer.Apart from enjoying the film for its artistic and creative merits, I've learned to appreciate and pick up a few business insights that aren't too different from what I've been learning in the MBA program. People have picked up business lessons from movies like "The Godfather," (Here's one and here's another) so here's my take on Business Lessons from American Gangster (there are some spoilers though):Master the supply chain - In the movie, drug dealer Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington) was able dominate the Harlem drug market by finding the right supplier and finding the right means to get the goods to the market. Lucas traveled to Asia and found quality contraband and used U.S. military planes to hoodwink U.S Customs in getting his pr...

2008-02-26 13:55:00 It's Admissions Season for the incoming MBA and MM students for the W. I really like answering emails, so I'm creating a little section here called "Ask The AIM Blogger ."For the first question, I got this message about interviews (I edited the message to omit some specific information): HeyI am to be interviewed by [AIM Faculty Name here]. One Week Without Classes
2008-02-24 08:50:00 It's our one week break from classes and this is our last scheduled break for the first eight months of the MBA program. The timing couldn't have been more perfect.Personally, the stress of the increased workload for the past month was taking its toll on me-- again. I've been under the weather lately, with rains pouring every once in a while and the temperature has been dropping lately, my body has been flirting with the flu. It has been evidenced by my stuffy nose and very, very hoarse voice. People have been advising me to rest a couple of days leading to the break, and I think it's justified, although I'm not too inclined to get the tag "sickly" from some.Like any other "breaks" we have had in the past, school work still figures a whole lot. There's the walkabout projects, Action Consultancy stuff and the required work that will occupy in most people's minds during the one week. (Unfortunately, I'm one of them). But when you think about it, this IS the break that leads to ... More About: Classes , Week
Marketing Success
2008-02-22 00:25:00 Our major Marketing Management (MM) presentation is finally over! The good news is that our group got the best reviews for coming up with a marketing strategy for Starbucks Coffee. (Our section was assigned coffee companies which we will develop a marketing strategy and marketing plan for.) More than anything, I feel relieved more than I am proud. Our group still has not shed its "last minute, last ditch effort" mentality completely, and we were stressing over the presentation up to the moments leading to the Big Dance. I was part of the tandem that was in charge with developing the advertising and promotional plans and I was really tired by the time we presented because I was designing advertisement studies or prototypes and writing ad copy until 4 o'clock in the morning. It's a good thing though our concepts and ideas were set a couple of weeks back so it was just a matter of getting the message to the right ad.Reflecting on how things went, our group is really good in generating... Financial Struggles
2008-02-20 12:09:00 When people say you are struggling in finance, they usually mean you're in debt or you are in a bad financial position. But here in AIM, that means another thing-- you are not doing well in the finance-related subjects. Our class is currently taking Financial Management 2 (FM2) under Prof. Maya Herrera, Prof. Gary Olivar and Dr. Grace Ugut, with each faculty covering the topics of the course relating to their expertise. I saying this right off the bat-- I'm having difficulty comprehending the subject. We are already in our 11th session and I could say with honesty that I'm lost as the guys from, well, "Lost."My difficulty with finance could be traced back to my Language of Business (LOB) days a few months back. If you sift through my blog posts around August and September 2007, you would see my initial troubles and "hanging by a thread" moments in Financial Accounting. I painstakingly coasted by Financial Management 1 (FM1) and here I am getting flattened by FM2 like an anvil fal...
AIM for the Win!
2008-02-18 15:25:00 The Asian Institute of Management joins the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, De La Salle University Professional Schools, University of Santo Tomas Graduate School and San Beda Graduate School of Business in the 2008 Inter-MBA Friendship Games, a friendly sports competition between business schools based here in the Philippines. The sports events for this year are badminton, basketball, bowling, chess, pool and volleyball. This year's campaign for the AIM sports teams is bannered by the rally cry "AIM for the Win!"Last February 17, the opening ceremonies for the 2008 Inter-MBA Friendship games was held at the De La Salle University Sports Complex in Taft Avenue in Manila. The host school prepared a nice program that featured the Philippine Mount Everest team giving an inspirational talk. After the traditional parade of teams, there was the competition for Best Muse, a standard fare in sports competition opening ceremonies here. Julie Ann Chua of MBA 1 represented the school and ...
The Birthday Post, 2008
2008-02-15 13:48:00 I'm turning 28 today and this may be known as my "AIM Birthday " as this is the only birthday celebration that is within the 16 months of the MBA program. The day started with a learning team breakfast with set-up by our team's mentor, Prof. Jun Borromeo. Well. the breakfast wasn't a set-up because it was my birthday, but rather it was a scheduled breakfast meeting with Capt. Bobby Lim, one of AIM's pioneer faculty and former president of the Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation. The pleasant meeting was filled with his insights on life, his experiences in World War II (yep, he was an officer during the war, thus the title "Captain") and of course, business. The big surprise happened in our Human Behavior in Organizations (HBO) class. As I entered the ABS-CBN Caseroom* and proceeded to my designated seat, a batch of presents surprised me. Here's a photo:I guess somebody in our class pulled a prank on me by leaving Valentine's day-related presents on my birthday. It's al... More About: Post , 2008
Setting the Bar High
2008-02-12 13:27:00 Excellence is something MBA students often aspire for. But the problem with high performance is the setting the bar high too often that you can't keep up.I'm kinda experiencing this little problem in our classes lately. As I've mentioned before, class work and group deliverables have increased for this week. The good news is that our group has responded well and we have risen up to the challenges from our requirements in Human Behavior in Organization (HBO), Financial Management 2 (FM2) and Development of the Enterprise (DE). For some, there's the Walkabout to worry about. However, there's pressure to meet the high quality of work we have been churning out and the result is exhaustion and, of course, fewer sleeping hours. There's also the desire to outdo yourself and perhaps other groups in the requirements.I just hope that we'll get it easier as the week winds up-- it will be my birthday then. :) More About: High
Walkabout Season
2008-02-10 05:11:00 I've mentioned in a previous post that I'll be spending time writing about the Walkabout, one of our major projects for our Human Behavior in Organizations (HBO).If you look search for "Walkabout" on the web, particularly Wikipedia, you'll see this definition:Walkabout is an Australian pidgin (or perhaps quasi-pidgin) term referring to the belief that Australian Aborigines "go walkabout" at the age of thirteen in the wilderness for six months as a rite of passage. Our Walkabout project was inspired by this rite of passage and all of the MBA students in our class are required to through with it. But as opposed to going to the wilderness literally, our Walkabout is about going out of AIM and do something that will help us grow. That's why we make our own projects based on areas we feel we need to improve. We set the targets and we set the timelines (there's a major deadline for this though) and we set to achieve something more than a grade. Each Walkabout project can be done by a... More About: Season
Knowing is Half the Battle
2008-02-06 18:50:00 I follow this forum site called Pagalguy and it is one of the best resources in researching for your MBA program if you're a prospective student. One good thing about these kinds of forums is that when a person not familiar with a topic, particularly AIM, poses a controversial question, people with a better vantage point could bring clarity.A good example is one thread in the discussion boards where one prospective MBA student posted this:One of the negative feedbacks that I have received about AIM is that Phillipines is not a safe country to reside with coup attempts often. I had attended the AIM Open House in Mumbai and this issue had been raised during the Open House as well after it was mentioned that the coup militants had tried to occupy the AIM building since its one of the tallest buildings in the area. I have two questions:1. How safe are the student during such coup attempts?2. Doesn't such political instability repel recruiters? The questions were posed to Prof. Rafael A...
