Coffee Ground Fossil
2008-02-01 18:09:00
Put those used coffee grounds to some good use and teach your kids about dinosaurs at the same time. What you need: 1 cup of used coffee grounds ½ cup of cold coffee 1 cup of flour ½ cup of salt Wax Paper Mixing bowl Objects to make impressions in the dough with (something that could be used to mimic dinosaur footprints) Butter Knife Directions: Mix together the coffee grounds, cold coffee, flour, and salt until well mixed Knead the “dough” you created in the previous step and then flatten it out onto waxed paper Cut your dough into pieces large enough for your intended fossils Press your objects firmly into the dough but do not press all the way trough it Remove it to reveal your fossil impression Let stand overnight to dry and harden If still not hardened, place in the oven for a short period Some “did you know” facts: Fossil s are simply the remains or evidence of a creature or plant that once lived on the earth. Cleaning up the Clutter
2008-01-30 18:09:00
I am messy. I bet some of you are as well, and I guarantee some of your children are! If you walked into my apartment right now, you will probably find a pile of clothes or blankets in one of the rooms. It never fails; there is always a pile of clutter somewhere. I have devised excuses, like “I am just so busy that I don’t always have time to fold all my clothes” or “I ran out of hangers”. Who am I kidding? I can still remember fight after fight from my childhood, with my mother stressed out about the piles of stuffed animals all over the house. I guess some things never change. So learning from my own experience, here are some tips to help those of you with kids like me, in hopes you can avoid some of my mother’s frustration. Make cleaning up a game. My mother bought a net and arranged it in the corner of the room. She would sit on the floor with me and we would toss them into the net together and I actually looked forward to cleaning up the toys with her. Give some ...

Sitter Safety Tips
2008-01-25 19:31:00
Regardless of whether you are a stay-at-home or working parent, the need for a babysitter will eventually arise. But how can you locate a trustworthy babysitter? Of course we all hope to hire a sitter we already know, such as a friend or relative. Here are a few other sources for finding a good sitter: neighbors, church groups, local community centers, au pair or nanny services. No matter what, it’s always important to check references on anyone you leave with your children. In the event of using a stranger or a service found online or through the phone, it is especially important to ask questions and get all the information you can. Here are my top questions to ask a sitter before leaving them alone with your child: Describe your previous experiences in child care. (This is good because it opens the door for them to tell you about volunteer or paid experience, siblings they have watched, or services that have employed them.) Are you trained in CPR and the Heimlich ma...

Make A Christmas Snow Globe!
2007-12-18 18:57:00
Hey gang, The holidays are definitely here! This week we are going to celebrate by making different holiday crafts for Christmas , Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Let’s get started by making a festive snow globe using a glass jar, a Christmas ornament, and some glitter. Here’s everything you need: Glass jar with tight fitting lid (any kind of jar will do—pickle jar, baby food jar, jelly jar, you name it…) Distilled water (or boiled water that has cooled) Glycerin White or silver glitter Clear aquarium sealant Small waterproof ornament or figurine Plastic jar lid (small enough to fit inside your glass jar—a peanut butter lid for example) Ribbon or gold cord Craft glue Now here’s what you do: First, make sure your ornament will fit inside the jar. We need to elevate the ornament so that it is visible within the jar (or “globe”). To do this, we are going to glue the ornament onto the plastic jar lid using the aquarium sealant. After gluing the ornament to the pl...

Make Crystal Snowflakes
2007-12-17 18:04:00
To continue our wintry theme this week, today we are making a crystal snowflake. Here’s what you need: A wide-mouthed jar Blue or white pipe cleaners String Scissors Pencil Boiling water Spoon Borax (any brand will do, but not the product called Boraxo—it won’t work!) Blue food coloring (optional) Now here’s what you do: First, make a snowflake frame from the pipe cleaners. You can use three long pipe cleaners as the base, and the cut a couple pipe cleaners in half and wrap them around the base on all sides so that the entire snowflake is connected. You want it to be big, but remember it has to fit inside the jar! Now, tie a piece of string around one of the pipe cleaners in the center and tie the other end of the string to a pencil. Make it just long enough that the snowflake will hang from the pencil and dangle inside the jar. Take the snowflake out of the jar for a second to stir up the Borax solution. Mom or dad—pour boiling water into the jar. Add the Borax to...
