The measure of a Christian education
2008-02-07 13:14:00 Pulpit Magazine has opened the proverbial can of worms in asking how a Christian family should educate children. “Home, Private, or Public School?” it asks. The conclusion is essentially whichever one best suits your family, which in a general sense I agree with. I am not opposed to Christians sending their children ... More About: Education
Tale of a reluctant homeschooler
2008-02-06 05:41:00 I wasn’t going to post today, other than the few links I shared, but Deb from Let A Woman Learn just left a beautiful and well-thought out answer to the question, “What are your reasons for homeschooling?” Enjoy her story: Before the birth of my first daughter, I didn?t think much about education. My own ... More About: Tale

2008-02-06 05:19:00 February 6, I will be at the NCHEA Legislative Day, learning about our legislature and discussing the homeschool bill which will have its first hearing at the end of this month. Unfortunately, my husband is also having surgery and I will have to leave before I am able to speak with my senator. A few links ... More About: Reading
Kill the school boards
2008-02-05 15:39:00 Matt Miller, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, has written an interesting piece for the Atlantic Monthly in which he proposes an interesting solution for American public education: eliminate local control. At least he correctly identifies the philosophical basis of his argument. In Massachusetts, [Horace] Mann?s vision of ?common schools,? publicly funded ... More About: School , Kill
What are your reasons for homeschooling?
2008-02-04 14:09:00 Dreaming [BIG] dreams asked, so I thought I’d turn the question over to my audience, who predominantly homeschools. I would like to hear from any home schooling parents. Libraries and homeschoolers
2008-02-03 07:23:00 For an upcoming issue of Public Libraries , the journal of the Public Library Association, an interesting call for submissions has been issued: Homeschoolers are a growing constituency for public libraries. Families choose to homeschool for many reasons: religious and political; their children?s learning styles; the quality of the public schools. ...
NE legislature?s contempt for ALL parents?
2008-02-02 08:36:00 Commenter John left an excellent response to my entry on Nebraska’s proposed anti-homeschool legislation: LB1141 is condescending and contemptuous to all parents; homeschool, private, parochial, and public. These limitations upon the educational choices proposed by LB1141 usurp a parent?s primary obligation, authority, and responsibility for the education of their children. This constitutes an attempt to ... More About: Parents , Legislature , Contempt
Just how different is a homeschool education?
2008-02-01 08:23:00 The Colorado Independent has a special issue devoted to homeschooling. In it, you can find an interesting mix of stereotype and reality, laced perhaps with subtle mocking and a strange sort of intrigue. At least that is my impression after reading all the articles. The tone is best summarized by Anthony ... More About: Education
NE?s anti-homeschool bill, one senator responds
2008-01-31 07:54:00 The following is a letter from another Nebraska homeschooler to Senator Tony Fulton of the 29th district (South Lincoln). I have been asked by a few people for ideas on how to address senators, which I take as a compliment, but it isn’t something I am exactly well-versed on. I think Jessica does a ... Political discussion (and a resource for teaching)
2008-01-30 09:53:00 Update: I’ve added some links to other homeschoolers I could find supporting various candidates. It isn’t extensive, but ... More About: Political , Teaching , Resource , Discussion
Why would homeschoolers object to state testing?
2008-01-29 08:00:00 Position: Homeschools should not be forced to adopt state standards or submit to state testing. Object ion: Raised by “reality check” in the comment section of the Lincoln Journal Star blog. ” If parents are properly homeschooling their children, then a test should not be a problem. “ This argument is appealing on the surface. ... Vote for German homeschoolers?
2008-01-28 16:59:00 Several blogs recently have asked their readers to help German homeschoolers put a question before their Chancellor regarding homeschooling. Educating Germany provides pretty clear directions. Home Education Magazine even provided a pictorial tutorial. And Dare to Know has a translation of the letter you would be supporting. NE senator introduces legislation detrimental to homeschools
2008-01-25 07:53:00 January 23, 2008, Senator Schitek of Lincoln, NE introduced Legislative Bill 1141, which would dramatically interfere with the independence of homeschools. Under current law, Nebraskan homeschools (referred to as unaccredited private schools) are “acknowledged” by the Commissioner of Education when the annual paperwork is received. California to embrace American Diploma Project
2008-01-24 08:46:00 California, too, is improving its educational pipeline, or conveyor belt as Life On the Planet so aptly described it. For example, California will join 30 other states in the American Diploma Project , aligning academic standards from kindergarten to college. This seems like a no-brainer, but as things stand, the education that students receive in one grade ... More About: California , Embrace
MO looks at parental rights, tax credits for homeschoolers
2008-01-23 10:35:00 Missouri is taking a look at a parental rights bill, one which also includes a specific provision for homeschoolers. Mouse and Mom Reviews: Creativity Express
2008-01-20 22:10:00 Welcome to Mouse and Mom Reviews , where my nine year old daughter and I each provide our perspectives on a product or service. If you have any questions for either Mouse or me, feel free to leave a comment and one of us will respond. Mouse says… Creativity Express is an art computer game. It teaches you about art in a cool way. Furnace, Tickles and Ruby are your art guides and are the characters that teach you about art. They are really funny. Tickles has inventions that don’t work, like her time machine. Furnace makes paint and Tickles eats it. Ruby does most of the teaching. My favorite part is when they let you make paint. I learned that grape skins will react with copper and then it forms a green crust. If you grind it, it will turn into a fine green powder. If you mix that with egg yolk, it will make a tempera paint. If you mix it with oil, it will turn into an oil paint. This paint may turn black if mixed with other colors. I think this art program i...

Homeschool definitions affecting virtual charters, special ed
2008-01-16 15:42:00 In her comment on a previous discussion, Renae of Life Nurturing Education writes, ?Whoever defines your words, controls you.?
