Hello, My Name is Heather and I Steal Frenchfries.
2008-01-11 07:08:00 I had better type fast or I might reconsider posting this. Here goes my moment of candor (for better or for worse):Reason #260 of why you shouldn't be getting homeschool advice from my blog...My mind has been a jumbled mess lately. I'm sure you can tell with posts titled "drowning" and such nonsense. January is not a kind month for ADD perfectionists who live in a self-induced checklist haze. All this to set the scene for my wandering mind at dinner time tonight. Here's how events unfolded...Tonight after 5pm my mom came home from teaching piano (she stays with me a couple days each week) to ask me "what's for dinner". I was buried under a pile of papers I had put off grading during the holidays (OK - even some from before the holidays). We were still doing school at the table. I didn't want to cook. In fact, I think I would have rather eaten the stale holiday popcorn than cook... or the rotten Oreo balls.I sheepishly called my husband (who worked hard all day and was in 6:00 t... Photo Caption Contest: Aliens Amoung Us
2008-01-10 07:01:00 This is my Thursday Challenge contribution for this week - the theme was "Anything". So what do you think? How about a caption contest? Sorry, but I don't have a prize to give away (unless you want your very own custom made day planner printable weekly inserts... cuz that is what I made for myself today). I certainly can offer a pat on the back if you come up with a thrilling bit of humor to go along with this 'out-of-this-world' photo.Leave me a comment and come up with a title, a dialog, or some other interesting note for the photo above. In a few days, I'll pick my favorite and announce it here in the comments section (and add it here in the post with a link back to your blog).Announcing our winner - Bunny Trails:BREAKING NEWS!This just in - the daughters of the infamous Violet Beauregarde of Willy Wonka fame were just spotted slipping out of Spago Beverly Hills early this afternoon. The Heart of the Matter
2008-01-08 08:16:00 My first published article will appear in the Heart of the Matter today. It feels weird to write for someone else other than myself... but then, I felt like my article was written for me this time regardless of the deadline. It might as well have been posted here on my blog because it is a lesson I find God teaching ME right now.The article I wrote is about the Garden of our Hearts... taking time to build heartstrings to connect us with the Lord, our husbands, and our children - despite our hectic schedules and our crazy homeschool lives. I hope you'll join me at Heart of the Matter for the rest of the story...... and that you'll stick around to see the other talented writers and wonderful encouraging articles there. Drowning
2008-01-07 07:11:00 I'm still working on the "list". Sorry for the silence in here. Thanks for being patient. I'm wondering where the weekend went... because I haven't stopped since I got home from vacation over the holidays. I'm feeling rather frazzled and we are taking a vacation day tomorrow from school... which is really sad, considering that this is only the second week of January. Hopefully this isn't an indication of how the "new year" or the second half of school this year will be 'turning out'. Prayers are coveted as we try and get our groove back! Hope your January is blessed and productive. Please say a prayer for my friend Jennifer as well (she just had major surgery and has 4 little babies at home to care for).I'll be back in tomorrow with a regular post... and hopefully a whole slew of items to cross off on that nasty list!
Field Trip Foto Friday: Texas Vacation 2006
2008-01-05 06:23:00 cousins and the monkey boyIn case you are just tuning in here, you'll notice that I post a series called "Field Trip Foto Friday ". I have been off the band wagon with it for some time now (most of the fall), but am hoping to get back to it more regularly. I can't wait to start on the next set of field trips... I've been saving them up for the blog for a year now. I also am planning to overhaul my site at some point and make the field trips and homeschooling materials easier to get to. That all takes time and money, though... both of which are fleeting...piñata princessesUsually there's a single place that we do our field trips, so this one may be a bit weird. Our school year didn't end until August that year, so when we took a long trip back home to Texas in May of 2006 before school ended, I considered it an extended field trip. My BIG FAT January 2008 To-Do List
2008-01-03 01:42:00 NON-BLOGWORTHY UPDATELast night I made home-made chili and my husband made home-made cornbread. We laughed as we shopped at the grocery store - there was not a can of black eyed peas on the shelf. I bought some purple hull peas to cook, but didn't do it. We spent New Years eve making home-made kolaches (poppyseed and apricot) and pumpernickel bread. We played Crazy 8 (a card game) and danced in the kitchen to "What are You Doing New Years?" (big band version). I also cleaned the pantry out, hung up my 2008 calendar and weighed in.I'm a busy bee this new year. At least I should be busy. This first day back to school I got up at 5:30am to tackle 2008 face on. We'll be doing light school today and then meeting some buddies at the library... and then going to spend some gift certificates this evening at the mall. Below I have listed what I'll be up to this month... and the bolded items are what is most important right now. I'll be checking back in on this post to cross it off.LIST ... The Swap Before Christmas...
2007-12-31 05:09:00 I know that everyone else is going on about what they got for Christmas , but I got my November Swap gift from Dawn before I left town earlier in December and never got a chance to blog about it. I wanted to make sure she got an extra thanks for the presents she mailed. I got the best of three senses:I can SEE the groovy stickers...I can SMELL the delicious pumpkin spice candle....and...I can HEAR the classy music she sent! Those CDs there are some various artist favorites of Dawn's and they are jazzy and hip. I took one of them with me over the Christmas holidays (living in Texas means family trips last extra-long on the road). I was singing the swanky blues until my husband finally made me turn it off. Thanks again for the awesome SWAP gift, Dawn! I am on my way to the post office tomorrow to mail my December SWAP to Amy. She already sent me her Swap gift, too! I'll post about it tomorrow. You should see my long "back to the regular groove" list of to-do items and to-blog items arou...

Gifts and Glitter: A Sprittibee Christmas Post
2007-12-21 16:32:00 This really is more than one post. But Christmas is upon us and I'm about to be absorbed by family frivolity. Must hurry. Time is short.GIFTSFirst I'd like to acquaint you with a few gifts that are perfectamundo for the 2007 holidays:1. Gift Cards. You just can't go wrong with a card. Please stop buying things for people that they have to return. One awful trip to the mall this year is enough, I mean - really. I got a gift card in the mail yesterday from my REALTOR. So unexpected. 20$ for Wal-Mart. Now that's some Christmas cheer! Just in time for me to go buy food for the Christmas party at my house for tomorrow. You better believe I'll be callin' him up the next time I want to move. He's got his gift on.2. The Lazarus Handsfree Bluetooth. Yes, I know the REAL name is the Motorola H500, but let me tell you why I call it Lazarus. It very well may be the best made bluetooth on the market. I'm sold - that's for sure. You see, husband found said earpiece in the pocket of my ne... More About: Gifts , Post , Glitter
Nazi Utah?
2007-12-20 18:04:00 Just in case there's ANY homeschooling parent left on the planet who hasn't heard about this legal case in Utah (that much resembles previous cases in Nazi Germany), I'm enclosing an updated link. Although I am very happy that the judge is now being investigated (and should be REMOVED permanently for his blatant prejudice), we still need to pray for this woman and her kids - who have been battered by the justice system. Sad world we live in when others are unwilling to tolerate differences of opinion. That is the stuff wars are made of, folks... and concentration camps. Let's not forget that it happened less than 75 years ago! The slippery slope that could lead us all back to that kind of atrocity is being intolerant of others who differ from us. Hate is not the answer. That is why people like Johansen just CAN'T be in public office. If you can't put your opinions aside and be fair to all - you shouldn't be a judge.Hat tip to my buddy Rich. Thanks for keeping me out of the da...
Becoming All Things to All Men This Christmas
2007-12-19 19:16:00 I have had a most interesting week... a week of seeing God open my eyes to the NEED for humility and love of others. It all started with a prayer in my prayer journal that God would take away any pride that I have because pride is not from Him. We all know that God answers prayers. Sometimes not in the way we imagine... so I remembered as I prayed for humility and added, "Be gentle on me, please" to my prayer without speaking it aloud.God began my week with an unplanned field trip to a public school. The opportunity was 'dropped into my lap'. My eyes were opened to the beauty of the children and God gently reminded me that those little souls and hearts are what education is all about. He let me meet some wonderful teachers and allowed me to see them in action. Learning about others who are different from us is a huge tool in breaking down hostility, promoting peace, and growing in unity and love. Then God spoke to me through a man at my church. My preacher is sick and has been out ... More About: Christmas , Things

On the Road Again...
2007-12-12 18:35:00 I think I've said it before, but we are a traveling family in December. We pack up like a herd of nomads in Mongolia (minus the tent and pooping on the ground thing) and head for relatives around the Lone Star state. My kids have six sets of grandparents. Kev's parents (mom-stepdad, mom-stepmom), my parents (dad-stepmom, mom, adopted grandpa, ex-stepdad-step-mom). Unfortunately, the only one of their great-grands left is my step-grandma in Florida. They have only met her once at my sister's wedding. Needless to say, my kids lack for nothing at Christmas time, that is for sure... if only we can keep the vehicles filled with gas and the laundry done enough to fill our suitcases. Spending time on the road is not a big deal for us because it is all we have ever known. So this is December. Another trip around the ribbon of freeway that holds Texas together is under-way. We left Friday last and are heading home early - today most likely. Thanks for allowing me room to enjoy my 'holiday... More About: Road , On The Road , The Road
Diversity Training: The Public School Field Trip Review
2007-12-11 18:43:00 The field trip to Public School was fabulous yesterday. We got there around 9:45am and stayed until nearly 2:30pm or so. We helped sort text books, deliver supplies to teachers, listened to the choir perform their Christmas song for the upcoming program, did lunch duty, tied a few shoes, met lots of teachers and classrooms full of curious kids, sat in the office while one or two of them got discipline referrals, met the friendly office staff, and even got some free art textbooks that are no-longer used in current circulation for the school. We worked pretty hard sorting and stacking textbooks for an hour or so. It was good for the kids to feel like they helped out.Another interesting thing about this school is that it's a school where nearly 80% of the children are on free or discounted lunches (and the ratio of whites in the school is only about 5%). It was amazing to see how much hard work the teachers are putting in to their classes, the classrooms, the library and in keeping th... More About: Review , Training , Diversity
Swapping Snot?
2007-11-19 02:07:00 This past week my family has been plagued with a myriad of nasal congestion woes. Some of us have had the added misfortune of lung cookies, headaches, ear-aches and sinus pressure so hard it makes your eyes twitch. This Friday I took the kids to eat at McDonald's and I couldn't even taste the food. [Let me warn you NOT to eat at McDonald's if you can't smell. Greasy fries are really gross without a smell. Trust me on this.] I should have called a casting agency and asked if they needed actors for a sinus medication commercial... because we wouldn't have had to fake looking (or sounding) like we all needed to be at the ER getting chest x-rays.Thursday night I got into my night gown and tucked the kids in bed. My ten year old son was downstairs with his grandma and my eight year old daughter slept on the floor on a "pallet" of blankets beside my bed. Morgan and I both were snotty and she feels better sleeping in our room near me when she's sick. I made sure she was tucked in and...
Easy Gift Idea: Decorative Canned Cookies
2007-11-16 18:03:00 We have a birthday party to attend this evening, and not a lot of cash lying around for presents. My daughter wanted to make something for her cousin, so we baked Honey Cookie s last night and then made a decorative can to keep them in.We have done this project before (back when this blog was only a month old), so if you haven't been through the archives, you'll enjoy seeing the photos from the original cookie can post. Can you spot any differences in our artwork? We happened to still have some of that great metallic multi-colored ribbon and even the same pair of jeans we cut for the fabric on the top. I'm sure our little birthday girl will love it!This is a great gift idea for the holidays if you have a ton of family to bake for and not enough cash to buy them all presents. You could fill them with most anything small. We used a coffee can, but the original idea used toilet paper rolls... so I guess it all depends on how big your "stuffing" is.Supplies Needed:waterpaintegg crate ... More About: Gift , Idea , Easy
Email Funnies: Words Women Use
2007-11-15 21:12:00 *They* say that you should not post when you have 'blog block' because it decreases your chances of keeping your content excellent. I'm not sure my content ever reaches the excellent point, so I don't know that this rule pertains to me anyway. However, I got a funny email yesterday (that I've gotten at least three or four other times in the past decade or so)... and I wanted to share (partially because I have nothing better to say, and partially because I enjoyed it and hope you will to). I altered the content a bit - because I like doing that sort of thing on funny emails. This post might be helpful to those of you who don't have email and are living in the dark ages. Get Well Card
2007-11-14 18:25:00 Had to share my get well card with you all. Seems a very observant little 8 year old girl knows that her mom wears firecracker Old Navy pajama bottoms and that the throat spray is by "Vick". That swollen tonsil she drew up there is pretty accurate stuff, too. My throat was awful scratchy and sore yesterday. The prayers are working... I'm feeling a little better and we might just go on a nature walk today to get out of the house. I think we all have a bit of cabin fever. I could use some real clothes, hair rollers and make-up for a change today, too. I'm tired of the 'pajama mama' sick-house routine.I have to say that yesterday we DID actually do some school! 2007-11-13 17:46:00 ON THE MENDAs for us... we're still trying to get well around here - and to get my poor mutilated computer back together again. I've got a sore throat and am feeling awful. The IT Guy I live with took apart the DELL Sunday night to give it a new hard-drive. He was still doing his magic on it last night. So far, so good. I'm certainly not up to full speed (myself) - and while the computer may be faster, it is lacking all the software required to put me back in business as a homeschooler or blogger just yet. Back to hand-writing the lesson plans today for me. Likely we'll be doing school "lite" anyway... and that's fine with the kids and me both! Looking forward to some cuddle time, reading and maybe art if I can fight the medicine head off this afternoon.BUGGY PETSThe Calipitter is getting really big and has distinct red rings joining his segments together. Being Thankful: Making a Honey List
2007-11-12 00:44:00 "Life is a flower of which love is the honey." ~ Victor HugoI've been making a different kind of list this weekend. Not a honey-do list, but just a "Honey List ". My man has been caught doing good. I thought I would take a moment to write down some reasons why he is so amazingly wonderful. Even after 15 years.- He took me to Godiva chocolate store and got me a box of dark chocolate this weekend. We were passing the mall on a drive Saturday and he said, "You want to go in to the Godiva store and see if they have a sale going on?" I speak chocolate (most women do)... so this is certainly a way to communicate his feelings for me... don't you think?- He bought me mascara at Clinique. He remembered that I was out of it after hearing me mention it.- He brought home a tiny bottle of my cologne from Wal-Mart when he went to change the oil in my vehicle. So that's TWO things in one... and the neat thing was that my cologne is hard to find - Michael Kors - and Wal-Mart just happened to have a ... * Plan Now: Make the Most of the Holidays *
2007-11-09 18:46:00 Freedom of Want ~ by Norman RockwellMy aunt told me that a little old man she knows once told her, "When you get to be my age, Christmas comes every two weeks". While I may not be there yet, I think I can agree that the years go by too fast! Seems like days ago when we were starting school again... and now Thanksgiving break is coming up in just a week or two. The holidays are fun times, but they are usually so packed full of activity that if you aren't on your toes... you might feel a little more like you have been run over than refreshed. Below are some tips and timely advice to keep you from feeling frazzled Thanksgiving through the New Year:1. START PREPARING NOW.The parties, meals, presents, cards, and preparations won't happen unless you have them on your calendar, make your lists out, and start taking small steps towards getting them done. Most people have an idea of where they are going to be traveling to for the holidays by the end of October, and if you don't get on the... More About: Holidays , Make , Plan , The Holidays
Nomination * Medication * Anticipation
2007-11-08 19:13:00 I sent my nominations in to the HS Blog Awards. It was one of the most difficult things I've done all week... aside from cleaning up snot-rags, washing sheets, medicating feverish children, and trying to keep from frowning (I'm a grouch when school isn't getting accomplished). Kaden was sick yesterday, so we lost yet another day this week to sore throats and pharmaceuticals. It hasn't been pretty.I wish that I could have nominated quite a few more people for the blog awards. As I was making the nominations out, I thought maybe we should take suggestions next year for categories because not everyone falls under eclectic homeschooler... or nitty gritty, you know? And shouldn't there be like, 20 cyber-blog-buddy categories? So you could nominate all 20 of your favorite BUDDIES??? That category is just too cruel. So today we are getting back in gear. No more tissues. The kids are finishing up Math and I'm... well... blogging. But after this, I'll be homeschooling and getting meat ... More About: Nomination , Medication , Mina
