Do we have only 5 yrs to live?

(contributed by our reader)I watched a programme on a local Indian news channel India TV and they said that according to a NASA scientist, by 2012, all the ice in the Arctic belt will melt and major cities like Mumbai, New York, Kolkatta and all those which are perched near the seas will sink! Previously predicted to melt by 2040, now they're saying it'll melt in 2012!It's high time nations like the USA and other developed nations woke up and curtailed emissions of harmful gases in the atmosphere. We too can make a difference. This problem, which was sidelined and ignored so far has taken a dangerous turn.

* Plant trees:- By planting more and more trees and looking after forests, you can do your bit to save our planet. Trees emit oxygen and take in carbon dioxide which is one of the reasons through which global warming happens.* Save Energy:- Switch off electrical appliances when not needed. Also, turn off the water tap when not in use. This will save a lot of energy... and your money too! Buy energy efficient appliances.* Travelling issues:- Take public transport whenever possible. Use Cycles or walk when you have a less distance to cover. This will help reduce air pollution.* Recycle:- By producing new paper or glass from recycled materials, we can save a lot of energy.* Spread awareness:- Spread awareness around you about this serious problem which would eradicate life on Earth. Educate ignorant people about the problem of Global Warming and try to bring about changes in any way possible.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is an average increase in the Earth's temperature. Such an increase in the Earth's temperature causes changes in the climatic conditions. Scientists fear that if solutions are not drawn to curb Global Warming , it will pose a serious threat to the lives of those living on the planet. It will cause drastic rise in sea-levels and big cities which are near the sea will sink due to cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes and other reasons due to Global Warming. Such a rise in sea-level would be due to the melting of ice in oceans and mountains. To save our planet and in turn our own lives, we will have to act... and fast!
