Contest Entry # 1 by Rob Santos
2008-03-09 09:11:00 UA&P: Contest Entry # 1Silence isn't always the Best Optionby Rob Santos I do not dream of a perfect world. Optimistic person that I once was, I have now come to think that the world has come to an era where one can only wish for the better, not the best. Take for example, the Philippines. The Philippines used to be ahead of its Asian neighbors, more than a decade ago. Beleaguered by corruption and mismanagement, the Philippines took a ride on a downward spiral, and it continues to do so to this day. Adding fuel to the Philippines’ ride is the current NBN-ZTE scandal, which has done nothing but bring disunity and chaos to the country. The country is once again in the limelight, but on a negative note.More than a week ago, schools like La Salle, Ateneo, UST and UP decided to go on a campaign for truth. Seeing these schools in primetime news made me wonder, how come the school I’m in has yet to have its say against the scandal? Thankfully, a week after, Political Economy studen...
Contest Entry # 2 by Rain Pangan
2008-03-09 08:22:00 UA&P: Contest Entry # 2IF THEY CAN, WHY CAN’T WE?by Rain PanganUA&P athletes do not get much perks and privileges compared to schools that offer scholarships and financial grants. To add to that, they do not get the support they need from the school community when they have tournaments and play-offs. But what keeps these students playing for the school? These athletes train hard and devote the time they should be using to study for the main reason that they have passion with what they’re doing. These varsity students know they won’t be getting a good deal when they join the school’s sports teams. However, since they are devoted to their game, they still train and play giving all their best without expecting anything in return. Very inspiring isn’t it?Imagine how the world would be like if everyone had the same passion as these athletes.Let’s not go too far, let’s start here with our country. If every government official has the passion for good governance, then...
Contest Entry # 3 by Christine Santos
2008-03-09 06:55:00 UA&P: Contest Entry # 3 What Love Is and What it can beAccording to Pope Benedict XVI, love is “ecstasy, not in the sense of a moment of intoxication, but rather as a journey, an ongoing exodus out of the closed inward-looking self towards its liberation through self-giving, and thus towards authentic self-discovery.” Love is pure and genuine when a person is able to free himself from being selfish to being selfless. This kind of love is what I want for our citizens to give to our country since most of people say they know how to love but the thing is they do not know what pure love means. Love is not an emotion but rather an assent of the will. Love is what people need and it is what people lack. Love does not only exist between two people. Love can exist between a citizen and his country. One can also be selfless for his country to the point of dying for it, however, sad it may be there are only a handful of Filipinos willing to die for our country. What I hope for my count... Contest Entry # 4 by Ria Cayton
2008-03-08 16:04:00 UA&P: Contest Entry # 4 RIA's World Vision My world vision begins with a situation you might have once found yourselves in. You find yourself stuck in a traffic jam, waiting for your lane’s turn to finally move. You suddenly hear a rap at your window and find a young girl whom you presume to be in her teens, holding necklaces of strung sampaguita flowers. With her other arm, she supports an infant, fast asleep amidst the pollution and noise of the busy street. At that moment, you remember friends and relatives informing you of syndicates which take advantage of the emotional impact children have, and how their sampaguita necklace sales is used to buy items both illegal and costing more than their day’s earnings. You knock back at the window without buying, or perhaps give the child something to eat. And once you do, your lane begins moving and you go your own way. What happens to that child is beyond what you can do or your concern even. This is an image which has become co...
Contest Entry #5 by Mia Tapiador
2008-03-08 16:03:00 UA&P: Contest Entry #5Being a Child Againby Mia TapiadorHave you ever gone to a bad day, almost wanting to surrender because of vexation that nothing seems right? You sought to be consoled but nothing seems to hear you and all you can do is shout within and cry? But at the end of the day you realized that the circumstances became an opportunity to remedy your character and to be a better person.I have been involved in different activities supporting the development and human formation in different avenues. One of them is being a Catechist in San Antonio Village. The year has brought me a lot of things to fathom on the reality that there is so much to do in the means of spreading the consciousness to be selfless and to be of help to others. Sometimes, it melts my heart to be with the less fortunate, not because of their material shortage but it is because of their thirst for knowledge and hunger for love. That despite their disposition in life, those little kids still commits to ...
Contest Entry # 6 by Samantha Gail Lucas
2008-03-08 16:01:00 UA&P Contest Entry # 6Parallel Childrenby Sam Lucas The Philippines is a paradox in itself. It is an Asian country with a Hispanic name, and its people is divided by the rich and the poor. The rich are getting richer, while the poor are getting more miserable. It has been said since time immemorial that education is the best solution to poverty, but the educational system is deteriorating. That is why my vision for this country is simple yet very feasible. For every child enrolled in a private school, a child in a public school gets sponsored! Why child sponsorship? Child sponsorship ensures that children enrolled in public schools will stay in school because they won’t need to work anymore. It will not only solve the problem of child labor, but it will also eradicate malnutrition because child sponsorship entails a balanced diet for every child. Children cannot go to school on an empty stomach, nor can they learn in communities where there is unemployment and underdevelopment. ... More About: Samantha

World's Most Corrupt
2008-03-03 16:18:00 UA&P TRIVIA TUESDAY: THE WORLD'S MOST CORRUPT COUNTRIESUA&PCorruption. Is something very relevant today not only in the global arena but also here in the Philippines. Right now almost everyone is breathing that word in out whether they like it or not or they do care or do not at all. So with that we'd like to present to you Forbes' list of top 10 most corrupt countries in the world.#10 Equatorial Guinea One of the world's smallest oil powers, it is also among the most corrupt. Still, possibly under pressure from the major oil companies that operate there, particularly Exxon Mobil, things have improved a trifle, though the corrupt President Teodoro Obiang Nguema remains in power. Now, though, it's becoming possible to operate a business on a reasonable basis, provided one accepts that 30% of all funds, including oil profits go straight into the pocket of Nguema. Still, the system of corruption now is more rational and orderly than the previous system that amounted to n...

For our bloggers who don’t know him, Mang Fred is our university’s technical equipment custodian who makes sure that all of our equipment especially the LCD projectors are kept safely and are working properly. Ask any graduate from UA&P and he/she definitely knows Mang Fred. He is certainly an icon of our university not only because he makes our learning life easier but also because he is our like our “tatay” (father) as well. It seems to me that he knows each student’s struggles and advises them once in a while on how to deal with difficult teachers. Each one of us has a story to share about Mang Fred. I for myself consider Mang Fred as my hero and my reliable partner in IMC. I will never forget my first ever pitch as a junior in our Marketing Management class. FILIPINOS, STILL UNHAPPY?
2008-02-24 15:32:00 UA&P: TRIVIA TUESDAY When can one say that he or she is happy? "22 years after Marcos, Filipinos still unhappy--analysts" Monday marks 22 years since the fall of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and although the economy has improved the lives of many, politics remains dominated by money, patronage and corruption, analysts say. With the media often drawing comparisons between Marcos and the current President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, analysts believe people have become disillusioned with a political system that is fundamentally flawed and only benefits the few. "People today don't have the same fire in their eyes as they did 22 years ago," said Enrique Esteban, a political analyst with the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), in Pasig City, in the Philippines. "Twice now they have been called out onto the streets, first to throw out Marcos and later Joseph Estrada. They were promised change and an end to corruption, but nothing changed."Mired in yet an...

Really, what is TRUTH? Or is there such thing?
2008-02-24 08:05:00 UA&P: For Tuesday Trivia - a PrefaceYes I know. It's not yet Tuesday. But I would like to know your take on the meaning of truth and if you believe there is still such. For the past 3 weeks, since Mr. Jun Lozada testified as the star witness of the controversial ZTE Broadband deal, Filipinos are now beginning to be more proactive in terms of making the government realize that it is everyone’s concern. Recently, an attempt to awaken the spirit of EDSA Revolution took place in Makati where the rally called for a stop on corruption: Tama na, sobra na. UA&P through the students of political economy had a signature petition to stop corruption. Then after a few days, a mass for truth was held in St. Peter’s Parish as people lighted candles symbolizing their search for the truth. After a week, law students from UST, Ateneo and UP teamed up and invited Mr. Lozada for an open forum to show the support of the students for his advocacy to tell the truth. Then in the afternoon, a no... More About: Truth , Thing
Building a reading nation and culture.
2008-02-23 19:35:00 UA&P: MUST READ MONDAY Read to succeed: Building a Reading nation As you know, a reading nation is one of our world visions. It has been known that the Philippines is not a reading country and some organizations and advocates dream of changing that. We personally think that reading is one of major keys to success. Not reading anything in general but the habit itself. We also believe that it should start with kids. Some people grew up not liking it because they weren't trained when they were kids so reading is important especially to children. Here's an article that further elaborates the relevance of reading and the call for everyone to engage in it.The rallying cry of the eight-year old Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation (SAS), as it pursues its dream of building a nation of readers, does seem an ambitious goal when one considers the limitations of the present public school system. To endeavor to promote the love and habit of reading among students from schools where libraries and lib... Words you live by...
2008-02-22 15:28:00 UA&P SUPER SATURDAY: What's your alarm clock? Almost everyone has a motto in life. A certain one liner that helps you get up everyday. A slogan that you always keep in mind. An epigram or inscription that radiates within you as you try to live your life following it. It is if you put it more playfully, your tag line that you try to market and advertise through your words and actions. A friend of mine once shared these words that profoundly changed the way i think and act. I was always known as frank, feisty and really blunt. Most of the time, i speak my mind without thinking of others. I always believed i was just being real thus i never really thought of the consequences of my actions and words. Then one day i stumbled upon this note by a friend and then and there,i took a hard look on myself and how i was doing with my life. Then it hit me. I knew i have to change. After that i made a deal with myself that from now on THESE WORDS WOULD BE MY ALARM CLOCK! Everyday after i o... More About: Words , Live |
