Green Evolution: Wall-mounted Tableaux by Kazuhito Takadoi
2008-01-31 16:02:00
The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London is currently holding an exhibition of the work of artist Kazuhito Takadoi, titled Green Evolution at Daiwa Foundation Japan House. The exhibition is open Monday-Friday 9.30am-5.00pm until 6 March 2008, with late-night openings until 8pm on 22 January and 7 February. Kazuhito Takadoi Image copyright Kazuhito Takadoi “Inspired by the rich woodland surrounding his birthplace of Nagoya, Japan, Kazuhito Takadoi creates ‘organic art’ using materials he has grown and selected in his own garden.” He describes the making of his unique work as ‘showing a very tight discipline in the Japanese tradition’, but, in contrast, describes this finished work as ‘a western abstract’. “He likens the slow aging process and subtle colour changes in his organic art to that of aging tatami mats or the changes apparent in a lacquer bowl, which in time reveal the colour of its base coat. Breaking the Rules: The Printed Face of the European Avant Garde 1900 – 1
2008-01-30 13:19:00
British Library, 9 November 2007 – 30 March 2008 Breaking the Rules explores the early 20th century creative revolution in Europe, the effects of which are still experienced today. Focussing on the medium of print, Breaking the Rules throws new light on the movements that dominated the start of the last century: Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, Dadaism, Suprematism, Constructivism, Surrealism, and others. Famous but hard to find works are on display. For instance, there is Marinetti’s futurist experiment with print, Zang Tumb Tuum and the notebooks and proofs of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. There are books and manifestos, as well as important films (Leger, Man Ray) and rare audio recordings from the British Library’s collection (such as one of the poet Tristan Tzara), which you are likely to hear nowhere else. The curator is Dr Stephen Bury. Stephen I know from Chelsea College of Art and Design. As well as being a scholar and multi-linguist, he is a writer and ...

Art?s most polish?d blaze
2008-01-25 11:35:00
Tonight, I’ll be celebrating the (presumed) birthdate of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns. I’ll be doing this in the time honoured fashion: a plate of steaming haggis, neeps and tatties, all washed down with a fine Jura single malt, all by the sound of Bagpipes. I’ll be wearing a kilt too. Actually, I’m probably making pasta, but with ...

Ruhleben Remembered
2008-01-24 17:04:00
During the First World War, thousands of British civilians were held at Ruhleben civilian internment camp in Germany. The prominence of some of these men (including England and Scotland international footballers) and the events and conditions at the camp ensured that Ruhleben was well-known to those back in Britain. Unable to escape, the thousands of men organised entertainment ...

Working at home much of the time, more often than not, I have the radio on. If it gets too distracting, I have to switch off, but there are often programmes or items that send me scurrying through the byways of the internet to track down resources for inclusion in Intute. Such was the case ...

Pantomime dames, principal boys, kabuki and musicals Japanese-style
2008-01-18 17:17:00
Cataloguing records for Intute on the all-female Japanese musical revue company, Takarazuka Revue, at the end of the British pantomime season got me musing on the theatrical traditions of men playing women and women playing men. Pantomimes have gender reversal both ways, with ugly pantomime dames in garish makeup and costumes providing the laughs ...

This morning (following a news item in the Guardian’s technology supplement I read on the train home yesterday) I’ve been playing with the latest ‘Web 2.0′ service to cause a stir - Spock. Today’s post about Italy and Epiphany has prompted me to write some more about one region in particular, the Veneto .
