Foreign Policy Geniuses (or is it Genii?)
2007-03-05 17:43:02 I just love to put an ‘i’ on the end of a word to make it plural. I wish there were many more words I could do that with, and “genii” just looks cool, doesn’t it? I think I’m going to start doing it more often. Tomorrow morning, I just might put on my panti, brush my toothi, and cook some eggi. Okay, so it doesn’t work with everything, but I’ll figure it out. On to the important stuff: With the new North Korea deal in place, our biggest foreign policy problem right now (outside of Iraq and Afghanistan) is Iran, and everyone seems to have an opinion on how to take care of it. Bill Scher at Blog for Our Future has collected a couple of interesting quotes from right-wing pundits, who have their own interesting ideas on what to do about Iran: Two of the conservative movement’s most beloved intellectual leaders, Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity, had slightly differing takes on how to approach Iran, though both received jubilant applause b... Texas Utility Going Green
2007-03-04 05:41:01 According to NPR, the largest utility in Texas is being bought out by multiple investment firms, who will in then make many attempts to make the company more environmentally friendly, including scrapping the proposed construction of 8 out of 11 coal-fired power plants. NPR: In order to win regulatory approval, TXU’s new ownership has promised to scrap eight of the 11 coal-fired electric power plants that the utility had planned to build. The private-equity firms worked with the Environmental Defense Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council in order to gain their endorsements. The cancellation of eight coal-fired power plants will prevent additional annual carbon emissions of 56 million tons, according to TXU’s statement. TXU is also pledging to support a mandatory cap and trade program aimed at regulating carbon emissions. The new owners have promised to cut electricity rates by 10 percent. That adds up to $300 million of annual savings for residential consumers, a... More About: Green , Utility , Going , Goin

The Al Gore Hypocrisy Story
2007-03-04 05:41:01 Let me start by explaining why I’m doing this. I’m no Al Gore apologist. I could care less if anybody thinks he’s a hypocrite or not. To me, this is just yet another diversion from the real issue of global warming by doubters. If they can’t prove their case scientifically, they’ll resort to petty finger-pointing and even slander against a major figure in the movement. So, with that, I give you my rebuttal to the latest “Al Gore Hypocrisy ” shenanigans. This all started when a group called the Tennessee Center for Policy Research publicly claimed that Al Gore is a hypocrite, and provided information about his energy use. This story was then picked up by The Tennessean, and subsequently, every right-wing media outlet. Then, Gore released a statement in response to the allegations: 1) Gore?s family has taken numerous steps to reduce the carbon footprint of their private residence, including signing up for 100 percent green power through Gr... An Economic Approach To Global Warming
2007-03-04 05:41:01 This post is a partial response to a comment by John (now parlimentofideas) in another post here on this blog. I’ll quote the comment so everyone can follow along: Well, let?s see if we can summarize a few tangental points of agreement, to date. 1. Respect for each other?s viewpoints. 2. Value propositions may contribute to AGW perspective, analysis, conjunctive work and measurable results. 3. The IPCC engenders policy making, i.e., contributes support to that process. 4. A nod?s as good as a wink to a blind horse - no really, beneath the humour lies a rich vein of truth. 5. Science can support the AGW discussion. Beyond that we are unwilling to venture, yet. However, we will offer a set of ?rules for critical thinking?, subject to anyone?s review. Reasic, this is not a challenge to or usurpation of you, it is a compliment. Correlation is not causation. Explanations are elusive and relative. Past events are no indication of future results (a mantra from our trade). Do not igno... More About: Global Warming , War , Global , Economic , Econ
We?re Growing!
2007-03-04 05:41:01 I just found out that I’ve been linked to by wordpress.com, because I made the top 100 “Grow ing Blogs” list (we’re #81 for yesterday, March 1). This is mainly due to a spike yesterday from two posts that generated a lot of interest. I just wanted to announce that and gloat a little, plus thank everyone who stopped by. I hope you all liked what you saw, and I hope you sign up for an RSS feed, bookmark me, or simply keep coming back. I also encourage everyone to join in any discussions on what’s been posted. It doesn’t matter what your level of knowledge is on any subject or what your position is, either. As far as knowledge, we are all continually learning, and I would like to include anyone and everyone in on that. The more questions that are asked and concerns that are expressed, the more opportunities we are presented with for learning. Also, it is my intention to respect everyone’s opinion in here. If we do not agree on a subject, we can ... More About: Wing , Rowing
Global Warming Myths Exposed!
2007-03-04 05:41:01 I?ve decided that I?m going to post a running series on global warming myths. However, these are not the myths you mat be thinking of. I?ll be posting about the myths about global warming that are perpetuated by global warming skeptics. In this, the first part of a series, I would like to look at some of the allegations against the Kyoto Protocol. What I commonly see is that the Kyoto Protocol is a global, wealth redistribution scheme, meant to especially benefit Communist countries. There are a couple of inaccurate assumptions in this one. The first is that Kyoto Protocol would ruin our economy. One needs only to look at examples of other countries that have agreed to and ratified Kyoto to see what the effects are. For comparison, though, let?s see what the US has accomplished. On page 9 of this paper, the US carbon dioxide equivalent emissions have increased 16.9% from 1990 to 2005. According to this table, you will see that the US GDP per capita annual growth rate from 1990 to 20... More About: Global Warming , Expo , War , Global , Myths
Irrationality Abounds
2007-03-04 05:41:01 I saw this comic at Crooks and Liars, and just had to post it myself. This is hilarious. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are plenty of conservatives who are intelligent and thoughtful. I just can’t help but imagine this type of scenario, though, when I think of “dittoheads”. “You tell ‘em, Rush!” That kills me. (Click image for full comic.) To Surge Or Not To Surge?
2007-03-04 05:41:01 With the President moving forward with his troop escalation and leaders in both houses of Congress advancing proposals to potentially end the war, it’s looking like this could get ugly real quick. I’ve thought quite a bit about this, and I think I’ve come up with the best solution for everyone: let the President have his surge. First, you must understand my opinion on the war. If you’ve read any of my previous posts on the subject, you’d know that I’m opposed to it. I believe that the administration misled Congress, the UN, and the American people with faulty intelligence. By “misled”, I don’t necessarily mean that they were convinced that their information was blatantly false. However, I do think that they were aware of reservations about their “evidence” within our intelligence community, and yet they presented it as if it were verified fact. So, since the reasons for going to war were false and especially since we ... More About: Surge , Urge
Saving the World from Asteroids!
2007-03-04 05:41:01 This is outside of my normal range of topics, but I thought it was pretty cool. David, at Wild Ox’ Moan, has posted an interesting article about an acquaintance of his who is doing research that could potentially save the planet. No, this has nothing to do with global warming: Along with his graduate students, Dr. [Richard] Fork?s research may well prevent such a catastrophe. Basically, he is working on a laser that will deflect the paths of asteroids away from earth. …If his work shows promise he could receive $850,000 in grants to continue research. Congratulations Richard, and thanks from all of us here on earth. David has also included links to articles elsewhere on the internet about the project. Here is some more info, in case you’re looking for some scientific mumbo jumbo that I don’t understand: “The laser we are developing now is also being developed to ablate materials,” Fork said, but the device would be “a substantial distance... Rush Limbaugh Interviews Climatologist
More articles from this author:2007-03-04 05:41:01 World, meet Dr. Roy Spencer. Dr. Spencer is a Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Spencer is best known as Dr. John Christy’s sidekick at UAH on their many fun-filled adventures into global warming skepticism. TCS Daily: Dr. Roy Spencer is a principal research scientist for the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. In the past, he has served as Senior Scientist for Climate Studies at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Spencer did something today that I found to be very ironic and unusual. He called Rush Limbaugh’s show and talked about bias in climate research. It’s not like he was personally advancing any agenda or demonstrating any motives of his own, right? Seeing that it was Limbaugh’s show, I didn’t expect many factual arguments, but I gave it a listen anyway, ... More About: Views , Interviews , Inter , Interview , View 1, 2, 3, 4 |
