Feedback Mechanisms
2007-09-26 15:13:00
This post is originally written Daniel Rhodes-Mumby at his blog, “This, Our Earth“. I was very impressed with Daniel’s understanding of this subject, and his ability to communicate that understanding, especially considering that he is only 15 years old. So, I figured I’d share this post on the subject of feedbacks. Greenhouse gases offer ...

Water Vapor = Feedback
2007-09-15 00:07:00
The Grit has had some trouble understanding the concept of a feedback in our climate system, so this is my attempt to explain it as clearly as I can. As to water vapor and forcing/feedback, I agree with you on the initial cause of water vapor increase, but, from that point on that increase, since it ...

Welcome to Reasic, Phil.
2007-09-13 16:13:00
A newcomer to this blog has responded to an old post of mine with some misconceptions about climate change. I originally posted this response as a comment, but after giving it some thought, I figured I should post it. Seeing as it’s my blog, I can do that. Phil , this one’s for you. Forget the ...
Earth?s Internal Heat Causing Climate Change
2007-09-04 15:13:00
I’ve gone back and forth a couple of times over this internal heat issue in the comments, and finally decided to put together a post on it, so that it might be more thoroughly explained. The crux of my argument is that even the 0.075 W/m^2 figure is too high, because it is a ...

Green Myth-Busting: Global Average Temperatures
2007-08-15 17:40:00
Myth: Global temperature data is inaccurate and/or too sparse to be able to establish a meaningful average temperature over the entire planet. Therefore, any claims of global warming are unfounded. Fact: NASA has collected and acquired massive amounts of temperature data from various sources, including land-based, meteorological stations, sea surface temperature measurements from ships, and ...

Green Myth-Busting: Occam?s Razor
2007-08-08 20:23:00
Myth: According to Occam’s razor, the theory that our current climate change is part of a natural cycle is correct. Fact: Occam’s razor does not apply for two reasons: the theory of natural variation is no simpler than that of anthropogenic global warming, and most importantly, natural variation is not a valid theory, which is a ...

Temperature Data Manipulation?
2007-08-03 16:27:00
I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, and it’s been because of a very hectic schedule both at work and at home. I hope to be freed up soon. This post is a response to a post by our friend, the Grit, at his new global warming blog. The Grit is continually struggling ...

Green Myth-Busting: Cosmic Ray Flux
2007-07-25 18:39:00
Myth: Our current global warming is due primarily to a decrease in cosmic ray intensity. Fact: The fact is that this theory is extremely new, and has only recently been considered possible. There are still many questions left to be answered and more work to be done on quantifying its effect before such a statement ...

Hurricanes in the Mediterranean
2007-07-24 17:09:00
A new study has found that as global warming continues, the Mediterranea n Sea could become warm enough that it could support the formation of hurricanes: Global warming could trigger hurricanes, or tropical cyclones, over the Mediterranean sea, threatening one of the world?s most densely populated coastal regions, according to European scientists. Hurricane s currently form out in ...

Green Myth-Busting: 70?s Ice Age Predictions
2007-07-19 15:18:00
Myth: These same climate scientists predicted a coming ice age in the 70’s. They were wrong then, so why should we trust them now? Fact: No, they didn’t. The situation in the 70’s was very different from our current situation. There was no scientific consensus on climate change. There was no international body of scientists looking ...

TGGWS Revisited
2007-07-12 15:55:00
We all know by now about all of the misinformation and manipulation that was packed into the “Great Global Warming Swindle” documentary. However, its arguments still persist in various forms. This has apparently prompted a new study that was recently published in a Royal Society journal. In it, two scientists have put to rest, once ...
Green Myth Busting: CO2 Emissions
2007-07-11 22:01:00
Myth: Compared to natural carbon dioxide emissions, manmade emissions are insignificant. Fact: The argument is occasionally made by global warming skeptics that manmade carbon dioxide emissions are much smaller than natural emissions. Some skeptics will even quote figures in decimal or percent form, which makes it look even more true. If this is the case, according ...

Okay, So Greenland Was ?Green??
2007-07-06 15:00:00
New research has examined the soil beneath the ice in Green land, and it concluded that Greenland was indeed “green” in the past: According to Fox News, a new study has found that Greenland was indeed green at one time. The title of the article was ?DNA Test Indicates Very Green Greenland?. So, that being a topic ...

As the title says, I will also be blogging for Green Opti ons now, in addition to here and at Celsias. At the moment, I’m working on one post per week in their “Green Myth-Busting” section. Here’s my first Green Options post: Myth: Mars is warming primarily due to the Sun and therefore, Earth’s recent changes in ...
Happy Fourth of July!
2007-07-04 15:58:00
Happy July 4th, everybody! Here in Alabama, we can’t shoot fireworks because of severe drought this summer, so I won’t be able to stun my son with my amazing bottle rocket skills, but we’ll still have fun cooking out and just being together. I hope you all keep our troops that are at ...

Cheney?s Meddling with Science
2007-07-04 15:30:00
As the Washington Post recently reported, Vice President Dick Chen ey has intervened many times in environmental issues here in the United States to help big business get its way. One of his more egregious, far-reaching examples is his actions involving the Klamath River in Oregon, which resulted in the deaths of over 70,000 fish. ...

Warming Trend Continues Despite Anomalies
2007-07-03 15:16:00
In a new post at Celsias, I’ve covered two related topics: the recent downward adjustments to 2007 temperature forecasts and the myth that global warming has stopped since 1998. First, scientists originally predicted that 2007 would eclipse 1998 as the warmest year on record. However, in recent statements, those same scientists are beginning ...

Addressing Skeptical Concerns
2007-06-28 15:59:00
I started answering a comment from Grit on a previous post here, titled “For Some, Doubt Is Enough”, and it grew quite large, so I’m just posting it here: The problem is not with people being willing to accept credible arguments, but, rather, with knowing which arguments are credible. I can accept that. May Tome just has ...

China’s Emissions and the Rhetoric to Come
2007-06-27 23:33:00
In yet another post at Celsias, I’ve addressed the new news of China ’s carbon dioxide emissions. This is a subject I’ve discussed before. Basically, I just wanted to add a little objectivity to the discussion. The emissions from developing countries like China and India are continually used by skeptics as excuses for why the United States should not get involved in international agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as the Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, I think it would be helpful to look objectively at the situation and put some of the figures that are often spouted into perspective. Check it out and let me know what you think about my conclusions.

Can Selective Shopping Stop Global Warming?
2007-06-24 04:58:00
The simple answer is no. I’ve got a new post up at Celsias, where I discuss an organization called Climate Counts that I heard about on the radio the other day. Basically, Climate Counts tracks down publicly available information on some major companies to see whether they address climate change. In theory, ...

For Some, Doubt Is Enough
2007-06-18 16:24:00
A skeptic named Tomé left a response on the Great Global Warming Swindle Questions Answered post that I would like to address here. I’m very concerned about Tomé’s response because it seems to demonstrate how little valid arguments matter to him. Here’s an example: So lets say C4?s doc is a big joke. Or that it ...

Rachel Carson, DDT & Malaria
2007-06-15 16:55:00
May 27th was the 100th anniversary of Rachel Carso n ’s birth. One might think that would be a cause for celebration, especially since she initiated a renewed awareness for the environment. One U.S. Senator, Tom Coburn (R-OK), disagrees. He’s effectively blocked a resolution in the Senate that would honor Carson for her contributions. What’s most disappointing ...

Anecdotal Evidence As Temperature Proxies
2007-06-12 22:10:00
We have sparked quite the conversation here with the mention of a simgle word: anecdotal. Apparently, this discussion has even prompted a more prominent skeptic to join in. I have now had the honor of being graced with the presence of John A from Climateaudit.org here on my blog. For those of you who ...

2007-06-06 20:27:00

How Can We Make a Difference?
2007-06-04 15:38:00
I was recently presented with a very common skeptical response about Al Gore on a previous post, which got me thinking about what we can do to help make a difference. The skeptic, who called himself “John”, seemed to be confused about what exactly is being advocated by those who are concerned about global ...

English Vineyards and Climate
2007-06-01 18:28:00
I was recently presented with an argument from the Grit about the Medieval Warm Period that I’d like to address. In a comment on the previous post, Grit advocated the using the history of English vineyards as a proxy for temperature data. If we do this, we should apparently find that there was indeed ...

?Hockey Stick? Myths
2007-05-30 15:41:00
About a month ago, I wrote a post about a man named E.G. Beck and his latest graph of CO2 measurements. In the post, I explained that Beck included all measurements, no matter how unreliable, which resulted in a very conspicuous and scientifically questionable graph. Yesterday, I read a post at RealClimate, which provided more ...
