The 2007 David W. Miller Award for Student Journalists David W. Miller, a senior writer at The Chronicle of Higher Education, was killed at the age of 35 by a drunken driver in January 2002. 2007 Heywood Broun Award Heywood Broun was a crusading columnist for the Tribune and The World in New York form 1912 until his death in 1939. He also wrote frequently for The Nation and The New Republic, as well as Harper's, Bookman, American Mercury and Collier's. He founded the American Newspaper Guild in 1933 and served as its first presidentAlthough his first love was sports, Broun is best remembered for his reporting on social issues and his passionate championing of the underdog and the disadvantaged. Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism The fellowships are a nine-month academic program that allows eligible professional journalists to acquire knowledge necessary to cover the environment more effectively and enrich the public's understanding of this crucial subject. The Scripps fellows audit classes, conduct in-depth research, and reflect on critical questions without the pressure of deadlines. With seminars and field trips, the program brings participants together with leading environmental specialists. This helps journalists better understand key environmental issues, but it also helps the scientific community better understand the media and the way journalists work.The Ted Scripps Fellowships program covers tuition and fees. In addition, for the 9-month, 2008-2009 academic year, a $47,000 stipend will be paid. Employers are strongly encouraged to continue benefits, including health insurance.

The Carl Albert Center offers an attractive five-year fellowship leading to a Ph. D. in political science. During the first three years, fellows serve as teaching or research assistants while engaged in coursework.
