We Love Math-U-See

(This is a picture of our home-made Decimal Street) I am going through Math -U-See, the Alpha level, with Miss A. We are really liking it. We both have learned so much and are only on lesson 4! I am so glad that Math-U-See is out there. It is really great and I LOVE having the DVD to watch. Miss A really likes the teacher, too. We did not start with the level below Alpha, because even at 4, my daughter met the criteria for being "ready" for the Alpha level and so we just jumped right in. The book I have is thoroughly used, but I put a piece of printer paper over the top of the page and I copy the page with a pencil. Some pages I just erase the pencil marks. Works out great for us. Oh! I went to Dollar Tree and got a white hard board (see picture above) and drew big decimal street houses on it. I got a wipe-off board thing at Dollar Tree, too and ripped off the white stuff, cut it into squares and put it below the houses to write on and wipe off according to the lessons.  ...

Kansas Wildflowers in My Back Yard

Well, the only thing doing well this year are the flowers. All my tomatoes, every one keeps being nabbed by the falling squirrels (one fell out of the tree right behind me as I was watering and his face was stuck in the ground). Our Hermit Crab Molted His Exoskeleton

Okay, okay. That must sound pretty gross to all of you who don't have hermit crabs. But, Hermie is really rather friendly. He (she?) likes it when I run him under the faucet and give him a shower. He comes out of his shell when I pick him up. He must be able to tell it's me. Must be my handling. Anyway, I thought you might like to see a picture! Yea! This is the first time I have ever seen this, too. It is no big deal. It is just his exoskeleton. They have to shed this in order to grow. Also, I found out that they eat it. Yep. Eat it. So, I put all the pieces back in the tank for him to eat. Don't let the picture fool you. His big claw there is not even the size of a dime. You should see him now, he is all pink and cute. Not all hard and brown like he used to be. And, from what I gather, it takes 10 days or so for his new shell to harden up. Well, enjoy the picture! :) Hey, anyone up for some buttered crab legs?

Ralph Masiello's Bug Draw ing Book ISBN 1570915261 This book is perfect for Kindergarten -ers on up to Adult. Here is the cover of the book and a paper on top showing the first three drawings my daughter did with colored pencil. Here are her drawings again laying on top of the very first page that she followed in order to make the drawing of a Beetle. On the bottom of the pages it has some extra design steps that one could take if they were older and would like more of a challenge with their drawing. For this bug, the drawing challenge at the bottom of the page showed how to make the fancy legs for the bug as seen in the colored picture on the right-hand page. My daughter is not that advanced, yet so we stuck with the basic bug. I liked that for each bug drawn, the artist shows them colored in a different way. My daughter was watching me clean my ears with a cotton swab and asks me, "What do ears look like on the inside?" My answer went something like this: When I dig my anatomy book out of storage, I'll be able to show you exactly what the inside looks like. Until then, we can look for a picture of one on the Internet. Here's the picture I found: We had a nice conversation about where the eardrum was and this is why only Momma cleans out her ears. We talked about the bones in the ear, how the sound waves travel along to the brain and how God created an amazing body. She was absolutely fascinated with the picture and the workings of the ear. It was a joy for me to see. :)

Training Wheels Off!

Here is Miss A's bike with training wheels removed. (Note to self, purchase a kickstand.) Here is Miss A waiting to go for a ride without training wheels on. Okay, so it was like 85 degrees outside, but I was game for this. She was all excited about getting to ride around without training wheels on. I knew I was going to be the one holding the bike up by bending down and holding onto the back of the seat and running along side. I just bit the bullet because it has to be done. As you can see, she is not wearing proper 85 degree clothing. This was my attempt to protect as much skin of hers as possible. It was a success. We went down to the end of the street and went and borrowed some long pieces of sidewalk of the government middle-school at the end of the street. My Daughter Decided to Cut Her Own Hair

Here is her new "do" with the "I've been swimming" look. P.S. My tomato plants are on the left and sunflowers are on the right. :) Yes, my daughter decided it would be a good idea to cut her own hair. I don't think she realized how much she actually cut off until we went outside and stepped over the pile. (She also was using some brand-new left-handed scissors I had gotten her.) This is not the first time this has happened. However, the first time was when she was two. How it came about is, she came and stood in front of me waiting for some sort of wonderful reaction from me. I did not know what she was showing me and she struck a, sort-of, "ta-da" pose. And then it hit me. Her hair was awfully thin on both sides. She had a sort-of mullet thing going on. I did not know whether to cry or get mad. I just sat there. I said, "Well, you are getting a haircut tonight." I called the salon and we went in there 45 minutes later. I had been wanting to get her hair cut for a long time...

Indoor Waterpark in Hutchinson, Kansas

Last Saturday we went to this great indoor water park in Hutch inson , Kansas . If my memory serves me correctly, I think it is called Grand Prairie. It is inside a hotel and we were there for like 5 1/2 hours swimming. I was more than exhausted. But, we had a lot of fun together and with my sister's family who invited us to come along. There were two big, curly slides to go down. One to go down with a tube and one without. There is a lazy river, a huge jacuzzi with a waterfall, a climbing/balancing/floating disk cross-over thing, an area for playing water basketball, and finally, a huge kiddie pool with slides and spraying water. We were wiped out. I and my daughter spent at least the first hour just going up and down the slides. We had all of our stuff on one of the tables. That was our base. There were plenty of tables, chairs, lounge chairs, etc. to go around. They have a great snack bar that has beer on tap. It went very well with the pizza we ordered. :) It was great fu...

Is This the Kind of Pop That Gives you Free-Radicals?

So, I give my daughter a partial cup of some of my diet pop. About 5 minutes later she askes me, "Mom, is this the kind of pop that gives you free-radicals?" ...it was all I could do to not fall on the floor laughing. My answer: "I don't think so, because it is not made with real sugar." This comes from a conversation we had in the car about sugar. She was upset because I never take the candy the bank doles out in the tube. I just leave it in there. Among everything else we talked about, we discussed sugar. I explained how it creates free-radicals in your body, that in turn bounce around and create even more free-radicals. I was just reminded today of a story a friend of mine told me about my daughter. See, I went to pick her up from my friend's house one day and my friend said that my daughter went into the bathroom to do her thing and after some time my friend went to check on her. Approaching the door, she could hear my daughter singing over and over, "Where is Thumb kin? Where is Thumbkin? Here I am! Here I am! How are you today, Sir? Very well, I say, Sir! Run away! Run away!" I can still picture her singing that and doing the hand motions for the song. She would sing that song over and over. I think she really liked the fact of having little thumb-puppets on her very own hands.

Calendar Frame My Step-Dad Made

Okay, after being asked about this wall calendar frame I mentioned earlier, I decided the best thing to do is to show a bunch of pictures of it. Above you'll see the calendar I have in the frame right now. It is called The 2007 Simple Life Calendar and it measures: 13-3/8""w x 24""h. But, any of these Lang Wall Calendars should work as long as they are about the same measurements. Every year, my mom mails out the same calendar (of her choosing) to me and my sisters. That way, all four of us are looking at the same calendar all year. It is a neat little thing she does and I look forward to receiving the new calendar each year. It is also neat to go into their houses and see this calendar hanging on the wall because I recognize it as my familiar calendar. My step-dad made these frames for us just by looking at some other frames and whipping these ones up for us. I've Come to Learn the Value of Seeds

I am blessed to have a friend who has extra seeds that I was able to mooch! I planted more corn this morning... 2-3 feet apart (grin). I also spot-planted sunflowers to replace the ailing, missing, broken or eaten ones. Miss A planted three sunflower seeds in her planting spot and is quite excited. I have only four seeds left and those are sunflower seeds. I am going to plant them as I need replacements. The dog ran through my plantings today and I realized that I am going to have to get drastic in my garden protection. I think I am going to break out the twine (maybe even just yarn) and some sticks and get creative making some sort of reminder-fence. Not industrial strength or anything, just a more visual reminder of my garden boundaries showing that it is not an area for rolling or strolling. High-Wind Advisory, Swimming and Garden

Today we are under a  Wind Advisory and two High -Wind Alerts. So far it has blown over the bike and blown Miss A's swimming pool off the back porch and around the side of the house. (That was an interesting sound.) Branches are coming off the trees all over the yard. And... the power went out. So, I thought it would be a good time to go outside, put some water in the pool to keep it from blowing away and take some pictures of the latest sprouts and growth we have going on outside.
