Spring Cleaning to the Site and Stuff in General
2007-04-29 00:00:00
This Mark Keathley print is called Spring Cleaning and I just love it. He has some others, too that remind me of my daughter. From what I understand, they are hard to get a hold of... I can see why! I have been doing a bit of cleaning, straightening, re-organizing and beautify-ing of the site lately. I am having to re-focus my attention on the theme and topic at hand. This is a homeschooling site with a Reformed, Christian, single-WAHM, rural Kansas-y flavor. So, I am going to focus more on Reformed links that have been hard for me to find that other Reformed homeschoolers may really enjoy checking out. I am also trying to make things more organized and interesting to look at. I really would like to do more with this template, like put another column in, but don't want to rock the boat too much and screw the whole thing up. :) At the moment I am going through some growing pains with my daughter and it is because we are having to temporarily live at my sister's house and there a...

Massive Arrest of Chinese and American Christian Leaders in Xinjiang
2007-04-25 00:00:00
Massive Arrest of Chinese and American Christ ian Leaders in Xinjiang MIDLAND, Texas, April 24 /Christian Newswire/ -- China Aid Association has learned though credible sources that on April 19, 2007 in Akesu city, Xinjiang province, about 30 major house church leaders were arrested when they met with four American Christians. The four Americans were also arrested. Included among the arrested Americans are a senior pastor and an associate pastor of an American church. Sources tell CAA that the four Americans arrived at Akesu airport on April 17 and fellowshipped with the house church leaders on April 18 at a local church family house. At the time of this press release the four Americans are still being held for questioning in an undisclosed hotel. The translator for the Americans, Mr. Jinhong Li from Beijing, is also still being detained. On April 23, the PSB confiscated the luggage of the four Americans from the house of their host, a local church family. Eight Chinese pastors ...
Making a Spider's Web
2007-04-24 00:00:00
Making a Spider 's Web Today, my daughter was outside playing when she spotted a spider web with a spider in it. She watched it for a while, but because it was between her bike and her little chair she had to move it somehow. She relocated the web so that the spider could re-make the web, "out of it's patootie" she said. She then came into the house and got into the old play-yarn I have and had me cut her off a really long piece of yarn so that she could make a web of her own. Realizing that she did not know exactly how to make a web, she wanted to watch the Charlotte's Web movie so she could learn how. At this very moment she is watching the movie while holding a very long piece of pink yarn. I am looking forward to seeing what she creates after all her "research" is done. Update: Here is the web that we made. It's harder than it looks, but it's done!

I am Going to Covenant with My Church Group
2007-04-21 00:00:00
I am Going to Covenant with My Church Group Recently I asked to "covenant" with my church group. The word was mentioned to be before when I asked about membership things and I backpedaled because it sounded like too much of a commitment for me and it almost made me hyperventilate. My commitment to the whole topic was a definite maybe. I was not exactly sure what it meant to covenant with my church group and its all going to be officially explained to me next week, tentatively, by the elder group. Right now though, I have been given some documents on the subject to read through, ponder and pray about. I do know that to covenant with my church group is just a more descriptive way to describe the commitment between two parties. I think in this scenario I will be accountable to others and that is good even though my flesh is screaming to avoid it. I looked up some things on "covenant" in the bible and this is a summary of what I found. Just reading through this ...

Coram Deo Fellowship - Lindsborg, Kansas - Elder’s Mission Statement
2007-04-21 00:00:00
Coram Deo Fellowship Elder’s Miss ion State ment For both, growth and peace in the assembly, the saints and especially the elders must make every effort to emulate the Lord Jesus Christ Who is full of grace and truth. (John 1:14) Fullness of truth means that we should be willing to teach and discuss all passages of Scripture and all topics related to life and godliness to which the Scriptures speak, not avoiding even the most controversial, uncomfortable of self-condemning subjects. We must speak, not only of the love of God, but also of His holiness and the holiness He desires in His people. This is a joyful holiness because it is convicted (i.e., convinced in one’s heart) by the Holy Spirit, empowered by the Holy Spirit, motivated out of a growing love for Christ and rooted entirely in Scripture not straying into prideful legalism which goes beyond the Word of God. Full of Grace means we should make every effort to deal humbly, c...

A Trampoline, Socks and Sand... What Can a 7 and a 4-Year-Old Do with These
2007-04-19 00:00:00
Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward. Psalm 127:3 So, there I was, over at my sister's house today enjoying the wonderful Spring weather. It was like 74 degrees outside and the breeze was blowing through all the open windows in the house. Beautiful day. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I could hear the kids outside jabbering on about this and that and having a very... very good time in the backyard. I could tell they were intensely involved in something, but they were out in the backyard and I try to stay out of their way when they are out there because I love it when they play in the yard. You know... find worms, bugs, play with tree branches and get filthy. Kids stuff. Then it happened... Right on queue. Crying from the 7 year old. Turns out he got hit in the face. With what? A sock. I looked out the window at the trampoline they were now jumping on and I saw white bouncing socks, (filled with what I then realized was sand from the s...

Our Sacrifice for Sin
2007-04-18 00:00:00
Our Sacrifice for Sin We've just got done praying for some sweet friends of mine and my daughter started asking me all kinds of questions about Jesus. "How was He nailed on the cross?" "Where did they put the nails?" "Why did He have to die?" She wanted me to show her exactly where the nails went. Then she said "And He came back to life!" She asked me what the sign said above His head on the cross and why they wrote that. We talked about how from the time when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden to the time Jesus died on the cross, people had to offer animals up to die and be sacrificed for their sin and they had to do it all the time because we sin constantly. We talked about how the animals that were sacrificed had to be without blemish and without broken bones; how Jesus came down from heaven and He never sinned, He was without blemish and never had any bones broken. He gave Himself as a sacrifice, once for all. He never had a sin na...

Giving my child a swat on the bare behind with a wooden spoon is NOT child abuse. This bill means a lot to me as I personally deal with the issue of spanking on occasion. I'll be praying and watching with great interest to see how this all pans out. -Denise Bill Targeting Parents Who Spank with a Switch Passes Committee AB 755 biases authorities against good parents who use traditional discipline methods Thomasson: "AB 755 biases police officers, social workers, district attorneys, and juries to regard traditional methods of child discipline as hateful, harmful abuse. This irresponsible committee has passed a very irresponsible bill." SACRAMENTO, April 17 /Christian Newswire/ -- The controversial California spanking bill passed its first legislative hurdle Tuesday on a party-line vote, Democrats for, Republicans against. Despite a flood of opposition phone calls and emails from California parents, AB 755 continues to assume that good mothers and good fathers who di...

Have You Ever Heard of The New England Primer? I Am Glad to Have This Littl
2007-04-14 00:00:00
The New England Primer 1777 ISBN 092527917X Have you ever heard of The New England Primer? The New England Primer (prem-er) is a wonderful book to use in instructing a child. It was first introduced in Boston in 1690 by Benjamin Harris. This was the first textbook printed in America and for 100 years after that, it was *the* beginning textbook for students. The Founders as well as most other Americans learned to read from The New England Primer and the Bible. Personally, I have found it to be a great little book that is very helpful in teaching my little one reading and The Westminster Shorter Catechism questions. She also loves going through the A-B-C picture-rhymes. The letter H, "My book and heart must never part" is her favorite one. We also like to ask each other the questions on the next page that say, "Who led Israel into Canaan?" and "Who was the first Christian martyr?" etc. Another section called, An Alphabet of Lessons for Youth is great,...

Our Blood Typing Experience Yesterday
2007-04-14 00:00:00
Two weeks ago I had the great idea for my daughter and I to go and test our blood because I always like for her to try or experience new and interesting things, and because I got an email, which was sent out to all the members of the SVHE, about a blood typing lab being held by the Biology Lab students. It was an open invitation for anyone to attend who might be interested. I thought to myself, "Interested?! Are you kidding?! Where do I sign up?!" The email said: The Biology Lab students would like to invite anyone who might be interested in finding out what type of blood they have to attend a Blood Typing Lab on Friday, April 13, 11:00 a.m. Lab students will be doing the actual blood typing which will tell if you have Type A, B or O blood and if you are Rh+ or Rh-.  There are  enough reactants for 30 people, first come, first served. So, being like I am, I called right away and left our names and contact info on the voicemail thingy and tried not to sound to...

Do you have a lefty in your life? My daughter is a lefty, and I found this
2007-04-05 00:00:00
I came across this place in my Internet travels called Anything Left -Handed, which says it has been around since 1968, and it immediately got my attention because my daughter is left-handed. It has been quite interesting when I am showing her how to write her letters because my hand is in the way when I am showing her (as compared to when she then picks up the pencil and tries to write). I have found that sometimes it's easier for me to sit across from her and write, because then my hand is on the same side of the pencil that her's is. Anyway...she does just great, has always held the pencil correctly and all that. She's a real sharp cookie. I do need to get her some left-handed scissors and I like the idea of a left-handed pencil sharpener. I never realized all the things that I use that could be made for left-handers. Besides the obvious, scissors, there are even techniques that I can show her to help her to not smudge her paper when she writes. Who knew? Certainly not ...

Just a typical 4-year-old's day. Sigh. There's nothing that beats being at home with her...NOTHING.

Proper Behavior in a Bathroom
2007-04-05 00:00:00
My sister used to get herself into some interesting situations growing up. We were not home schooled. We were government-schooled. Now, I was tutored once, after I got hit by a car while I was crossing the street on my way home from school. But, that's another story for another time. This little bathroom ditty was written by my sister as part of the punishment she received for getting in trouble for being part of a bathroom ruckus. She wrote this while in the 4th Grade and my mom kept it for years and finally gave it back to her as a gift just a few years ago. My mom framed it in a frame and tole painted all around the matting of the page to make it a nice gift for my sister. It now hangs in my sister's bathroom for all to learn from. Here is her writing, and I have copied everything as she wrote it. It's a riot. Who knew there were so many things to do in the bathroom? Enjoy! Mud Covered Child 'O Mine
2007-04-05 00:00:00
I came across this account I wrote back on January 3rd. It never got posted for some reason or another, but here it is: Yesterday, I heard my sister gasping over my daughter. I came to the back door where she was standing in her brand-spankin’ new winter coat, snow bibs, snow boots and gloves covered from face to toe with mud. Earlier, she was sent outside to play in the snow before it melted away. Well, she did that for a while, but then found some really cool mud. And, being like any normal, curious, fun-loving 4 year-old she played in it. My sister thought it was the end of the world. I thought it was adorable. Yes, I would rather she was wearing something other than her new clothes, but at that very moment in time, my task was to deal with the situation the best way possible. So, I turned into the mommy-fix-it machine (you know the one, where there are no emotions or drama, just efficient action). So, I grabbed two empty plastic shopping bags and put one over e...

2007-04-05 00:00:00
Photo Sharing - Upload Video - Video Sharing - Share Photos Yesterday, I finally got to see the movie called Amazing Grace . Hooray! A dear friend of mine and I drove 65 miles down to Wichita to see it. (I read on Yahoo! movies that the movie is only playing in only 791 theaters nationwide, so if you would like to see it, you may have to drive a little bit.) I was prepared, brought tissues and used them. There were many reasons why I wanted to drive and see this movie: I wanted to show support for a high-quality, God-honoring film by seeing it in a theater to "cast my vote for it" so-to-speak. I wanted to see the movie in a theater as opposed to waiting to rent it on DVD and watch it on my little TV at home. I wanted to see if it was going to be bloody and graphic, which would have ruled it out as non-viewable for my daughter. I wanted to see how historical and educational it was in order to possibly use this as part of a history lesson on various subject...
