Found SketchI made the huge push yesterday to clear out my basement studio of all of my art supplies, books and furniture. It felt like a gargantuan task and at times I was overwhelmed with how much stuff I have accumulated over the years. In those moments, I would sit down, catch my breath and wonder how this happened. The other question floating around in my head was how did I cram so much stuff into a roughly 10' x 13' space??? To read more ruminations about stuff, check out Andrea's blog...take a look at her art while you're visiting too.In my quest to make sense of my stuff and to organize my items sensibly for future use, I went through everything very methodically so that I could box drawing supplies with similar items, etc. I also found some things that have been MIA for some time including this sketch which I drew using a great Japanese ink brush pen (that I also happened to find BTW) on heavy weight paper back in '03 or '04. This eventually became a lino cut wh...

Celadon Glazed Stoneware Plate with Dip BowlI was at the Art Student's League all day yesterday making new work. I threw 6 forms on the wheel including a plate which I hadn't done in at least a year. I'm pretty happy with the results too. I also brought home a 16" x 24" slab of clay that I rolled out at the league to make some more slumped pieces. The plate you see above is one that I made from a slab with a small bowl which was thrown on the wheel "off the hump". Sushi anyone?? All the spoon rests that I threw off the hump a couple of weeks ago just came out of the glaze firing and I'm going to start listing those on Etsy tomorrow, if not today, depending on time. Here's an example of one of them below. My sister in law just popped in and and asked what I was up to. She came by right in the middle of my photo shoot for my new work and my subsequent resizing in Photoshop. I mentioned that "making the art is just a fraction of what goes into being an artist". She thoug...

Cone 6 glazed stonewareThe cylinder above and the one below were part of a 4 part exercise to play around with different surface decorations on thrown forms. Both techniques are similar in that I carved away a design from the clay when it was still green (unfired). The difference is that the one below used a colored slip on the surface. I colored slip with copper carbonate and a little rutile to get the light green color on the raised portions of the cylinder.Cone 6 glazed stoneware with colored slipSo where do I go from here? I like both the techniques and am incorporating colored slip and carving in my new work. 2 of the other techniques that I'm trying are a cold surface technique using my Shiva Paintsticks and other 2d materials. It also means that the surface decoration will be done after the piece is bisqued, and will never be glaze fired. It will render the piece non-functional since it won't be able to withstand much handling which has its place in ceramics. Finall...

New Porcelain Slab Built Ware
2007-04-02 00:42:00
All of this work was built from porcelain clay that was flattened using a slab roller. It is all green and has not yet been bisque fired.Just a super quick post this lovely Sunday afternoon. Ceramic production has been slower than I would like, but I am making huge gains in making the garage studio become a reality. I have moved furniture around our house and have begun boxing up all of my 2-D art supplies that are currently in my basement studio and will begin the process of dragging them to the garage. Our TV room has become a 3rd bedroom, which my in-laws will love when they come out this next week. We have been making them sleep on a futon in the TV room for the past year and a half whenever they visit. Having an actual bed will hopefully be a pleasant surprise for them. With that accomplished, we were able to move the bedroom set that was stored in the garage into the house, thus freeing space for my studio. My current basement studio is going to become the TV room. The ...

Glaze Tests March 21, 2007The "keepers" in my opinionGee, is it really Thursday already, because it feels like the week is just flying by! Here in Colorado, we have been enjoying warm spring days for the past few weeks; that was until Mother Nature decided to remind us that she's still in charge. We woke up to about 4 inches of snow in the Denver metro area this morning. I really can't complain because come summer we'll be crying for moisture. My goal for my blog is to post every 2-3 days, and this week I let 4 days stretch between posts.... Not my intention, but what can you do? I could backdate my post to make it look like I posted yesterday, but I won't. It's not like I don't have anything to say either. I have a blog post saved as a draft with future blog topics all ready to go.Anyway, let me get back on topic. I wanted to share my glaze test tiles that came out of the kiln last week. I had tested a high calcium semi-matte base glaze recipe from Mastering Cone 6 Gla...

My creative corner studio in the garageIt has been a productive past few days around the Guajardo household! Inspired by Pinky's home renovations, we have begun painting the trim in our home, clearing out the garage and general sprucing up of the homestead. After remodeling our house 1 1/2 years ago, we basically moved in and have been living with all sorts of unfinished projects. We sort of turned a blind eye to it all, until I said, "enough is enough!" We have to finish it, I feel like there's something that still needs to be done every single day of the year and after the feng shui seminar, it's just plain bad energy. In addition to painting the trim we have begun the process of cleaning the garage in anticipation of my studio conversion. I'm working in there, but it's not pretty. Functional, but not pretty. I can already picture the crisp white walls and light streaming in from the new windows...bits of inspriation and eye candy hung on the walls. Back to reality, we...

New work fresh out of the kiln!
2007-03-24 18:10:00
Here's new work freshly glaze fired at the Art Student's League of Denver that I picked up this past Wednesday. These pieces were fired to cone 6 in oxidation, ie., approximately 2230 degrees F in an electric kiln. I love the celadon glaze that we have mixed up at the ASL - it's a beautiful cool, translucent light aqua color; however, on this stoneware clay body I give it a B-. Mile Hi Ceramics in Denver has, until recently, been out of the porcelain clay that I normally use so I had opted to try a stoneware called 4010 which fires to a buff color. In my opinion, it's not the best background color for the celadon glaze. The pure white of porcelain would be a better backdrop much like a painter often chooses to use the white of the canvas to highlight the actual color of the paint. Lesson learned, and I'll be adding this to my notebook for future reference in case I'm ever tempted to try this again. It really depends on what the artist is striving for though, so it's all good. ...

Floral Tray 15" x 10.5" unfired. Does the design look familiar to you?Gingko Tray 11.5" x 11.5", unfiredThis will be a super quick post this morning. I just wanted to share a couple of handbuilt trays that I'm working on this week. I rolled a number of clay slabs out on Wednesday at the Art Student's League and brought them home to work on. Within 4 hours times, they had dried too much to make what I had originally intended, so I had to improvise and make fairly flat objects with my slabs. I settled on 2 trays, a shallow bowl, a set of chop stick rests and 5 spoon rests. I applied a aqua blue slip to the trays and will be sgraffito-ing (is that even a word?) the trays this morning.I also had a successful glaze firing at the league and as soon as I photograph the work will share those photos with you too - maybe this weekend.I had intended to get a lot done yesterday, but instead got sucked into cyber-space. So, after writing this post, I will not be signing back on today. ...

What have I been up to the past few days?
2007-03-20 20:17:00
A few weeks ago, Kismet Designs, a fellow Etsy seller, contacted me and about 8-10 other local Denver artists about possibly starting a Denver Etsy Street Team. 4 of us met in person this past Sunday, including Kismet, Kastroll Kreations, Carla Sonheim and myself. Not only was it nice to meet some fellow creatives, but it was also wonderful to brainstorm about doing some group marketing promotions together in the coming months. We have started a group blog, which will mainly serve to announce events, sales and other news and we hope to possibly test having a group booth at a few arts and crafts events locally. In other news, I tested my new mini Aim Kiln yesterday and it's working perfectly. I didn't get any porcelain pendants started this weekend, but will do so in the next few days. I also tested my larger Paragon Kiln yesterday. I purchased it used last year and didn't even know if it even worked. Good news! It got up to temperature for a bisque fire, and today, I'm goin...

New Sgraffito Tray and Answers to Heather's Meme Tag

Top view-unfired sgraffito tray brown and light blue slip, 9" x 15" x 1.5" Side viewThis was a fun project to make. I have been concentrating so hard on perfecting my wheel throwing skills that I forgot how much I liked handbuilding. This tray was made by rolling out clay with a slab roller, letting it set up a bit, and then slumping it over a telephone book. After the clay had dried enough, I painted 2 contrasting colors of slip onto the try. I used some fairly trendy colors-brown and light blue. I like the design I had done on my cylinder last week and decided to replicate that on this tray. Again, using the shellac as a guide for my own use so that I could scratch away the unpainted part of the tray. This tray is currently sitting on the bisque shelf at the Art Student's League. I should be able to add a clear glaze and have it ready the week after next. Actually I have quite a few things that will be coming out of the glaze kiln this week that I'll share, including 4 new cone 6...

The piece you see above is a before and after of the thrown clay cylinder that I had painted the other day. The yellow that you see is shellac and will burn off during bisque firing. I was searching for the name of the technique and I can't seem to pull it out of my brain files right now. I'm pretty sure it's a Japanese term-when I remember or find it, I'll share it with you.I was reading a book the other day, titled Studio Pottery, that has beautiful images and also a really great explanation of the re-birth of pottery around the 19th C in western cultures. I qualify that as western cultures because the ceramic arts has a solid tradition and reverence in eastern cultures. In a nutshell the author, Oliver Watson, describes how the Arts and Craft Movement began as a back lash to Victorian tastes and the rise of Industry in the 19th C. Machination made it possible for things to be produced faster, cheaper and more efficiently than handmade items. The movement was a social one and...

Wheel thrown clay cylinder with sgraffito decorationWheel thrown clay cylinder with design painted in shellacMy ceramics instructor at the Art Student's League asked everyone to try some new surface decoration treatments on our wheel thrown pots. I think it's a great exercise and will hopefully give me some ideas for new work. (Thanks M.C.!) Our task was to throw 4 cylinders and then apply a different technique to each one. The first one involved painting on a colored slip and employing a method called sgraffito, which comes from the Italian word sgraffire or to scratch. It is commonly used in ceramic arts but can also be used in 2d work. Paint on 1 color, let it dry and then paint another over the top and use a sharp point (or other end of the paint brush) to draw back into the paint. With clay, colored slip is applied and then scratched or carved back into the form. The second technique I am doing is to paint my design using shellac. I am going to carve away the unpainted...

2 weeks ago, I included a photo of my ceramic UFO from last summer that I had dipped in a celadon glaze. I searched high and low for that piece on the glaze shelf at the Art Student's League last week and couldn't find it. That's because I didn't recognize it! I had glazed the interior with a white glaze, then antiqued the exterior with a black underglaze and wiped away most of it so that the black would catch in the edges of the design. After this process, I then dipped it in a celadon glaze which is a beautiful aqua color when fired in an electric kiln to cone 6 (or 2291° F).That is the piece that I was looking for; instead, I found the pot that you see above with barely a hint of celadon. I asked my instructor what the heck had happened, because I know for darn sure that I had dipped it in celadon and have the pictures to prove it. Persnickity ceramics! She thinks that it is because I didn't allow enough drying time between glaze applications and for some odd reason,...
Moo Cards and the Business of Art
2007-03-08 17:44:00
My new Moo Card sI desperately need to make some new business cards for both my Etsy shop and for my website, Colorado Art Studio. The problem is that I am doing a complete overhaul of my website and don't have a logo or "look" that I want to advertise to the world yet. Enter Moo Cards stage left! I ordered some a few weeks ago and I just received them last week. I can't tell you how much I like these mini calling cards (they're about 1/2 the size of regular business cards-1" x 2.7"). They're a bit on the pricy side, 24.99 for 100; although that does include shipping from the U.K. They also come with this nifty solid storage container so that you can throw them into you purse, backpack or briefcase and they won't get dirty, bent, etc.The cool thing about these are that they're constructed of heavy duty paper with a smooth satin finish. I thought they were made from some sort of plastic when I first got them because they're so strong and durable, until I read the packagi...

5" x 7", acrylic paint, cotton fabric and threadI finally finished my 2nd "soft painting" installment in my Earth Series yesterday afternoon. I had begun this a couple of weeks ago, but have been overwhelmed with a marketing class I'm taking and also the events that have transpired in my personal life.My duties this week are starting to lighten, however, and I am finding more time to work on my art. I found that naming the pieces in this series is really fun. These are based on geological phenomena and the titles serve a double meaning. The term intrusion, in geology, refers to an event where igneous molten rock intrudes on another type of rock (such as metamorphic or sedimentary) and then crystallizes as it cools. So when you're out looking at rock formations or even holding small rocks, you can often see a streak of something else through the rock's body. Here's an example:From Class ZoneObviously my version is abstracted using both color and magnification of what it would actu...

Original glaze test from 2003 New test tilesFirst off, thank you to everyone who left comments and emails after my last post. I really, really appreciate all your kind words. Our house is oddly silent now, and we're slowly returning to normal and are remembering Helper as he was when he was healthy and happy. Thank God for my dog, Zuzu, who is my constant companion and follows me from room to room as I go about my day.I thought I would share some recent glaze test tiles I did in the past 2 weeks. I was trying to recreate a glaze that I made in college. It's a cone 6 oxidation glaze called Chinese Blue Green. Oxidation means that it's fired in an electric kiln vs. a gas or reduction fire. I'm working with my ceramics mentor from the Art Student's League of Denver right now on a glaze refresher since I'd like to get my studio up and running. As you can see from my original tiles and my new ones, the recipe is off-it's almost as if I didn't add the copper carbonate. So, last We...

Helper (1991-2007)
2007-03-02 15:18:00
Helper in 2003Yesterday was supposed to be a full day of making art work for me. Instead, I had to help my cat of 16 years leave this world and go to a better place. He lived a full life and has been battling feline diabetes for the past 3 years. In the last 6 months, my family knew that the time was fast approaching to help Helper transition to a better more comfortable place. The past week has been particularly hard on him and my family as he physically deteriorated and could no longer stand or walk. I had been avoiding calling his vet and making the dreaded appointment, but when I came home from doing my errands yesterday I knew I couldn't delay any longer. I was with him until the end, and I didn't realize how difficult it would be to let him go. I know I did the right thing, but it doesn't ease the pain. I arranged for a friend to pick my daughter up from school, so that I would spare her the pain of going to the vet's office with me. Even our dog Zuzu knew that so...
Covered Jar
2007-02-27 00:32:00
Before being trimmed & after with knobOne of my favorite types of pots that I like to throw are very narrow necked vases and closed forms. This particular covered jar was thrown as a closed form. It's a really easy way to make a covered jar because I just cut the lid off of the form, add a knob and voila! You can also make a covered jar by throwing the base and the lid separately, but it's a little more tricky since a caliper is needed to get the correct dimensions for a good fit. This is stoneware and is still in the green or leather-hard state. Once it's bone dry, it will be ready to bisque fire. This is approximately 7" tall with the knob and 5 1/2" wide. You may notice that I have changed the look of my blog. I have been taking an art marketing class with Alyson Stanfield the past 2 weeks and we are on the concept of "branding" oneself. I was just trying to line my blog up with my website for the time being. I realized my free website isn't doing what I need it to do, ...

Fabric ACEO for JafabritLast week, I reached a minor milestone.... When I signed into blogger to write a new post, I realized that it was my 200th post since the birth of my blog. I wondered how I would celebrate this feat because as many of you know blog beginnings are shaky at best. I thought an art give-away would be in order and offered a special fabric ACEO to the first person to comment. As fate would have it, Jafabrit was the first to comment. I have been reading her blog for awhile now and have been charmed by both her art work and the "Geordie Lass" phrases she sprinkles about on occassion. One in particular stands out: "I'm chuffed" is frequently used by Jafabrit when she's really excited and/or pleased about something. I just knew I had to incorporate this word into my gift to her.She asked me why I had chosen this particular image for her. To tell you the truth, my daughter just did a unit in school on chameleons and I thought this would be perfect for an ACEO...

I received a nice email from a woman this morning telling me that one of my fiber pieces was chosen as art of the day on EBSQ. What a great honor! Can you tell, I don't have too much to report right now? I'm still working on my new soft painting that I started last week. I also have so many new ideas floating around in my head. They're all related to ceramics and fiber and how to make them work together. I just finished a new fabric ACEO for Jafabrit, that I'm going to put in the mail tomorrow. You may remember, that last week, on my 200th post anniversary I promised a new ACEO to the first person to comment. Jafabrit was it and I tailored this one especially for her...or at least what I know of her through her blog. I was undecided on whether to post it or not, or allow it to be a surprise for her. Let me know what you think?Meanwhile, I just started taking an online art marketing class taught by Art Biz Coach, Alyson Stanfield last week. This is a month long class th...

Garage Conversion Part 1
2007-02-16 18:35:00
My first attempt ever at a movie. I apologize for the shakiness of the camera...very Blair Witch like. I was using my digital camera and had to try about 6 times before I got it right. I actually got it on the 5th time, but You Tube wouldn't take it because the resolution was too high. I re-shot the video at a lower resolution and that seemed to do the trick.I'm always surprised by the way my voice sounds caught on tape. Is that really how I sound? I know you can't answer that, but maybe my family can.We spent Sunday afternoon in the garage trying to bring some order to it. Now that it's starting to warm up here, I'm getting really antsy to start the build out of the garage into a studio space. I want to start NOW! I realized that yesterday when I decided to go to the Art Student's League to do some ceramic work and had to return home because a class was in session. Being able to work whenever I want to regardless of time of day or day of week would be hugely benefic...

I went to the Art Student's League of Denver today to trim my pots that I threw last week on the wheel. Lucky for me, I remembered my camera, though I felt a little dorky photographing my work in public. There was another person in the studio at the time and I had to explain that I blog. And, what would an art blog be without pictures?I mentioned last week that I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to remember how to throw and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was like riding a bike! I was little rusty, but I didn't fall off my wheel or anything. I decided to return today in advance of the class tomorrow so that I could trim (make pretty) my pots that I had thrown last week, so that I wouldn't have to do it tomorrow. Ideally, I should have gone in last week because these were almost too dry to trim.I should mention that when working with clay, it's not WYSIWYG. I am working with a cone 6 stoneware clay body. When in its raw state the clay is a dull gray color...

I was fairly productive yesterday and managed to finish 2 new fabric postcards and this piece (above) that I am donating to the Art Student's League of Denver, Mini March Madness Auction which will take place on March 3, 2007. I am really excited about this piece as it represents a new series that I am going to explore in paint, fabric and thread. I had so many ideas flowing through my head as I was making this and how I can tie it in with my ceramic work. The new series is based on geological phenomena which I've decided to call the "Earth Series". I was looking through an old geology text book of mine a few days ago and happened upon an aerial view of the San Andreas Fault. The photograph itself, looked like a beautiful abstract painting. So, I decided this would be the beginning of my new series. An exploration of the earth's plates colliding, sliding and scraping against each other as the earth's crust shifts and deforms the surface. Ironically, when I was studying pla...

Before bisque firingAfter bisque firingI went into the Art Student's League of Denver on Wednesday morning and spent about 6 hours in the studio. I was slightly nervous because I hadn't thrown in such a very long time. Surprisingly, it's just like riding a bike! I sat down and managed to throw 5 forms in a couple of hours, from bowls to my favorite narrow necked bottles. I'll try to get into the studio again Monday when the pots have dried to a leather hard state so I can trim the bottoms and add a foot to the pieces. While I was gathering all my supplies to go to the ceramic studio, I happened to find the piece that's pictured above. I had previously shown this porcelain pot on my blog last summer as a slide show highlighting how I put the texture onto my work. You can see the slide show here. The texture was done by painting shellac onto a leather hard pot and then wiping away the excess clay. The shellac acts as a resist, so where there's shellac, the clay surface re...

2007-02-05 18:29:00
This was forwarded to me by my ceramic's mentor at the Art Student's League and I thought I would share it with you. I got a good chuckle and hope you do too!Meanwhile, the auction at my daughter's school was held on Saturday night and was a great success. The live auction brought nearly $27,000 and the silent auction totals are still being tallied. Last year's auction brought the school almost $50,000 from the live and silent auctions combined after expenses. It was a great evening and I'm glad I was involved. That being said, I am looking forward to re-directing my attention and energies towards art. What am I doing? I'm getting back into ceramics again and will begin by taking a class at the ASLD, starting this Wed. I think that I will be devoting a good part of my energies towards ceramic sculpture and wall pieces along with smaller hand thrown pottery and jewelry which I plan to sell on Etsy. I hope to find a gallery venue for my ceramic sculptures and wall pieces ...

What does your drawing say about you?
2007-02-02 18:30:00
I want to take the quizThe results of your analysis say: You are driven and ambitious and tend to make radical moves to reach your goals. You are a thoughtful and cautious person. You like to think about your method, seeking to pursue your goal in the most effective way. You like following the rules and being objective. You are precise and meticulous, and like to evaluate decisions before making them. You have a sunny, cheerful disposition.I visited Fennymun's blog today and she had one of those personality tests posted. I don't normally do these, but this one stood out because it was a drawing personality test. I thought, okay, as an artist, what will mine say about me? I spent maybe 2 minutes on this. So, if you have sometime to kill or need a distraction, give it a whirl. No drawing skills required, just use your mouse to draw a mountain, path, and trees; then answer the questions that follow. I have to say, mine is fairly accurate, with the exception of being cautious and...

Klee Inspired Art Quilt is finished!
2007-01-31 03:24:00
Click on the image to enlargeI finished working on the Klee inspired painted and stitched art work that I worked on for a recent commission. My client had indicated that she wanted to mat and frame this piece, which I think will look fabulous! Just to get an idea of what this might look like once it leaves my hands, I created a mat in Photoshop and placed the art work inside. Meanwhile, it's been a crazy week here in Denver! What have I been up to? I am the marketing and PR co-chairperson for a fund raising auction at my daughter's school. Check out the blog that I put together...Steele Auction. Last year, the auction raised around $50,000 to help bridge the gap between the school budget and some of the activities and supplies that the teachers and parents would like to see the children have at school. The auction is coming up this Saturday, February 3. Needless to say, my attention has been turned away from my art work towards auction activities.I have also been preparin...

Klee is painted...not yet stitched
2007-01-27 00:06:00
Starting out...Mid-way throughFinal painting, I still need to heat set and stitch.I didn't start out with a great photo of Mazzaro by Klee, and have had to improvise while painting this one to compensate for the poor copy that I have. But, all in all, I'm happy with how it turned out. I still need to iron, fuse the interfacing and stitch, but then it will be finished. It's always a creative challenge for me to start on a new famous fabric painting. A little bit of discovery is involved each time I do one of these. It's a chance to get into the mind of another artist, a different time period. So far, I've covered the Renaissance, 19th C and now a 20th C artist. It's also a very meditative process for me that's hard to describe. When I think about it, I am really interpreting another artist's vision. The image is recognizable, but I bring my own baggage with me when I make something. When I say baggage, I mean that I have my own way of working, my favorite color palett...

It's fairly straight-forward, but you do have to make some creative accomodations to make it work. I have already started painting this one, but will have to share it with you tomorrow. I am using acrylic paints on commercial fabric. Once I have finished painting the piece, I will heat set the paint with an iron and then add interfacing so that it is stiff enough to handle the machine stitching that I will subject this to to...

I finished stitching, quilting and binding this one yesterday afternoon. It always takes me longer to do than I think it will. The finished size is 17.75" x 20.5", paint, fabric, batting and thread. I have also have this listed in my Etsy Shop.I won't be working on any art today, I spend Wednesday mornings at my daughter's school and this afternoon, I'm having lunch with my ceramics mentor from the Art Student's League of Denver. I'm getting back into clay and ceramics and will be building my studio as soon as it warms up. Have a great day!Subscribe to Fine Art and More by CMGuajardo
