Pondering on what the Ghost had said, he did so now, but without lifting up his eyes, or getting off his knees."You must have been very slow about it, Jacob," Scrooge observed, in a business-like manner, though with humility and deference."Slow!" the Ghost repeated."Seven years dead," mused Scrooge. "And travelling all the time!""The whole time," said the Ghost. "No rest, no peace. Incessant torture of remorse.""You travel fast?" said Scrooge."On the wings of the wind," replied the Ghost."You might have got over a great quantity of ground in seven years," said Scrooge. The Ghost, on hearing this, set up another cry, and clanked its chain so hideously in the dead silence of the night, that t...

Find last minute D56 deals for Christmas
2007-12-05 00:16:00
When I'm going to do my last minute christmas shopping online, and that's usually two weeks before the big day, to allow for shipping, I generally start at a shopping comparison site like Shopzilla. It uses search technology to compare prices from multiple stores and do some of the legwork for you. Some RSS readers won't display the javascript, so you can just come right back to the blog page to view.I've made some sample D56 searches for you to get an idea of what you can find on Shopzilla, or you can also search from scratch using this handy search box: ads from Shopzilla Discover more Department56 Sales today!

But he put his hand upon the key he had relinquished, turned it sturdily, walked in, and lighted his candle. He did pause, with a moment's irresolution, before he shut the door; and he did look cautiously behind it first, as if he half-expected to be terrified with the sight of Marley's pigtail sticking out into the hall. But there was nothing on the back of the door, except the screws and nuts that held the knocker on, so he said "Pooh, pooh!" and closed it with a bang. The sound resounded through the house like thunder. Every room above, and every cask in the wine-merchant's cellars below, appeared to have a separate peal of echoes of its own....

Our First Snow Village Display, circa 2007
2007-12-01 03:29:00
Okay, so we're really space challenged, and we had no idea how many Snow Village pieces we had actually gotten. We set up a six foot x three foot table and added some height on both sides to give it the appearance of a valley. We definitely wanted to use my pieces from "A Christmas Story" (all except this year's pieces, which don't count in my opinion, because they weren't really in the movie!), so we decided to integrate them into the display. By the time we were done, we had unpacked about 24 buildings....there was no way they were going to fit, especially since we were now adding 2 cobblestone roads and 2 white fences. We chose our 4 anchor pieces: Ralphie's house, in the upper left corner. Higbees was opposite in the top right. The Creamery was bottom right and holding front position on the bottom left was the Long Haul Truck Stop, my wife's favorite. We had the Starbucks building next to Higbees, and the Christmas Shop right below Ralphie's house. In the Valley were the To...

Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.'' ``Are there no prisons?'' asked Scrooge. ``Plenty of prisons,'' said the gentleman, laying down the pen again. ``And the Union workhouses?'' demanded Scrooge. ``Are they still in ...

2007-11-24 18:19:00
One of our blog readers asked me to profile their favorite shop in San Bernardino, CA.The reader said "The store has a HUGE Department 56 display and carries all of the villages plus many gift items especially Halloween items. They are happy to ship anywhere in the U.S. (and maybe other places). The owner is the sweetest woman anywhere and her name is Sandy deDoes. Her helper is Harriet Houplin."They do not have a website yet but I asked them for some pictures of their layouts and some general information and they were excited to comply. They sent me a package with about a dozen photos of some really great displays (four are pictured in this post). They are located at 1036 North East St., San Bernardino, CA and their phone # is 909-888-8053.Casual Living offers a "The Village Keepers of the Inland Empire" Department 56 collectors' club.A handwritten note from Sandy:"I'm so glad you have a blog regarding collectibles. A Wicked Thanksgiving
2007-11-22 18:05:00
Happy Thanksgiving to all!I mention "Wicked " because my wife and I just went to see it at the Hartford Bushnell, and it was unbelievable. The stage props and design were out of this world. The singing was great, too, even though it was on Sunday and we saw the understudies in some of the roles. It's highly recommended. If it comes to your area, definitely book some tickets.Speaking of the great and powerful Oz, Department 56 does a great job with their Wizard of Oz items as well. Some of my favorite pieces:Wicked Witch's CastleWicked Witch Scares Dorothy and the ScarecrowDiscover more Department56 Sales today!

The Holidays have officially arrived....
2007-11-18 03:24:00
....as if they weren't upon us back in October, even. Today we made our annual trek to Yankee Candle in historic Deerfield, MA. We arrived at 5 pm, and unfortunately we missed an appearance by Department 56 artist Cynthia Markle, who is responsible for many of the village accessories such as trees, animals, and other accessories. We had never been to the Candle in the evening, and we were awestruck by the lights on display outside. It was spectacular. If you haven't been there before, this is the flagship store, about the size of 4 Target stores. The store is divided into several small villages of shops, with many themed ornament displays, candle displays, and of course a full section of elaborate D56 displays. There is an educational toy store, a home and garden store, a Bavarian cafe, a candy and sweets shop, and much more. Every year they add more.Of course, on the way home, we stopped at Bub's barbecue, a small restaurant which is usually packed. It's near Umass and attracts...

Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" part two
2007-11-10 14:58:00
If you haven't seen the current theater version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol " on stage, check it out if you can. It's going to be at the Hartford Stage from November 23rd through December 29th this year. I've seen it, and it's wonderful. The show is on a round stage, and between carol singing and very good acting, it's the ultimate holiday experience. Here is the second part of my twelve part adaptation of the literary classic, "A Christmas Carol ": He had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost, this nephew of Scrooge's, that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again. "Christmas a humbug, uncle!" said Scrooge's nephew. "You don't mean that, I am sure." "I do," said Scrooge. "Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You're poor enough." "Come, then," returned the nephew gaily. "What right have you to be dismal? What...

A look back at some of the first Snow Village pieces: 1976
2007-11-02 09:59:00
These ceramic pieces were the "Original Six" village pieces released by Department 56 in 1976. They were all part of the "Original Snow Villa ge " series. All pieces are lighted, hand painted and numbered on the bottom. As it says right on their corporate website, "One Christmas evening, a group of friends set off to enjoy a dinner of celebration at a small country inn nestled in a quiet river town. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw the small, old-fashioned village decorated for the holidays. The lights, like fairies, glowed and sparkled amid the freshly fallen snow. All evening, the conversation was full of Christmas memories and the visions the tiny town had evoked. Amidst the jovial banter and magical memories, the idea for a lighted Christmas village was born. That spark of an idea became a reality when, in 1976, Department 56 introduced a series of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings. The rest ...

Annual Pumpkin Carving Party
2007-10-24 14:18:00
Saturday night my wife and I hosted our annual pumpkin carving party in our space-challenged condo. We had 24 adults and 9 kids over, and everyone got to carve a pumpkin and check out our Department 56 Snow Village displays. We didn't create anything elaborate as far as landscaping goes, but the displays still came out wonderful, as both parents and their kids really appreciated the spooky spirit. We gave out prizes for best carved pumpkin, scariest carved pumpkin and cutest carved pumpkin. It's really a fun party and a good alternative to the traditional halloween costume party. You can create fun treats like mummy dogs (hot dogs wrapped in dough with capers for eyes), pumpkin muffins (use two pans of pumpkin bundt molds), and of course, a good amount of assorted candies and scary shaped cookies. For the kids, you can get Mr. PotatoHead-like face parts to place on the pumpkins instead of giving them carving utensils. You can also opt for markers or paints -- but I'm not recommend...

Featured D56 Collector #6: The Yankees Room
2007-10-14 13:57:00
What got you started collecting villages? I had been buying DV pieces for my BIL & a cousin as gifts, but never any for myself because we lived in a very small apt in NYC. I always said that someday, when we moved into a house, I would start my own village. That day came & did I go crazy!! Someone told me about a store that was going out of business & the village pieces were being marked down weekly. By the time they closed, I had 16 bldgs & a bunch of accessories & didn't pay full price for any of them. That was it, I was hooked for life! Now I'm in a bigger house & thinking about a permanent CIC (Christmas in the City) display. How many years have you been collecting?I started in '96 with my 1st 2 bldgs...Grand Central Terminal from CIC (for my DH who was a NYC Transit Cop & Grand Central was his post for many years) & North Pole (for my 4 yr old son, had to get a train station just like daddy for him too). Udder Hope, Cow Parade, $1000 scholarship
2007-10-13 15:24:00
I wanted to mention my wife's company, The Perfect Promotion, is giving away $1000 scholarship to the person who answers this question best: "What does Udder Hope mean to you?". The $1000 scholarship is the Rae Lasky Scholarship for Hope of Learning, and it is dedicated in the memory of my wife's boss, Jody, who lost her mother to breast cancer. Jody allocates all of her time and a portion of her business' proceeds to Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October. This year she created a cow for the 2007 Cow Parade in West Hartford, CT, and named it "Udder Hope".Cow Parade has actually been a popular collectible lately, with the miniature versions of the life sized painted cows. You can enter the contest by going to udderhope.com and sending her an email with your own interpretation of what "Udder Hope" means to you. It's a legitimate scholarship and you could win it for your grand kids, friends, or family. It's not limited to a college scholarship - any form of learning wi...
Miscellaneous saturday morning notions
2007-10-13 15:13:00
* My blogging has become a bit infrequent, so I apologize. I've had to concentrate on getting my health in order by walking each morning and not drinking a zillion espresso shots to fuel my writing. I've also been incredibly busy with work projects.* Catzilla has been roaming our halloween villages. When we're home, we can shoo him away from nibbling on fences, trees, building tops, pumpkin pieces, etc...but I have to ask, what kind of damage does he do when we're not home???* We went to the Sears nearby in Manchester, CT, to look at the line of "A Christmas Story" pieces, and they had the two new buildings, "Uptown Theater" and the "Optometry". I read that the "Uptown Theater" is from the literary source which spawned the movie, and that the Optometry is where Ralphie was assumed to go to fix his glasses. The new accessory piece of Ralphie with his broken glasses was not available there. They had several pieces from last year also. We strolled through Macy's and they had all o...

D56 alerts from my feet on the street
2007-10-08 21:28:00
One of my avid collector friends alerted me to to a few store visits in Massachussetts. "First stop was Yankee Candle where Kristi Jensen Pierro did a signing of snowbabies. Very busy there - lots of people. She said she didn't see any sales but then didn't look around much as there was just too many people."I believe she is speaking of the flagship store in Deerfield, MA, which gets more and more crowded the closer you get to Christmas. Doesn't stop me, as my friends and I have made an annual trip up there once a year for the last ten or so years. We typically stop in Northampton for coffee and then head on up to the Candle. It's much more commercialized than it used to be, since adding the home & garden shop and such. It's still great, tho."Next stop was the Christmas Loft in South Hadley. Sad to see this small mall in just disrepair. They had some retired D56 houses 30% off - Never ever do they discount Snowbabies - can't say to much for their displays - they were o...

Adventures in Halloween Display Setup
2007-10-06 15:56:00
We ended up with way more pieces than we thought we had - thus, we had to build three vignettes this year instead of two. Of course, we have the Halloween Amusement park, well documented in this blog, with the "Scaredy Cat Ferris Wheel", "Spinning Pumpkins", "Swinging Ghoulies", "Halloween Dance", "Witch Rides", "Halloween Water Tower", "Mummy Mischief" and accessories such as "Resting My Bones", "Halloween Outhouse" and the "Halloween Fall Festival" sign. I'll post some pictures once my wife finishes the layouts and decor. My job is to pull the pieces out of the boxes and place them, and hers is to finish the design. We also have a vignette on our bar, anchored by "Jack's Pumpkin Carving Studio". From left to right I added "Creative Carvings", the "Dead End Motel" and the "Black Cat Diner." Although it doesn't scale well, we added the accessory "A Gravely Haunting", with the elderly woman positioned near the Black Cat Diner. The third vignette is a nice, scary setting, simply plac...

2007-10-02 13:03:00
Brian Jones was kind enough to send us a bio of what led up to the purchase of the house from "A Christmas Story ", now a full-fledged museum for the movie, and more importantly, for fans of the movie. The path that has led 31-year-old Brian Jones from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis to ?that little house on Cleveland Street ? is a result of his love for his favorite movie, ?A Christmas Story.? Last Thanksgiving, the ongoing relationship between Jones and his favorite film took on a whole new meaning with the opening of A Christmas Story House .A Christmas Story House takes visitors on a nostalgic journey to the sights and scenes of the classic Christmas film. In addition to A Christmas Story House, visitors can explore the museum where items from the movie are on display, more than 100 behind-the-scenes photos are featured and movie-related memorabilia can be purchased. A San Diego native, Jones had always dreamed of becoming a naval aviator like his father. After graduation from t...

Department 56's baseball stadiums
2007-09-29 12:47:00
Department 56 baseball is a really fun collection for baseball fans and even fans who enjoy historical architecture. I've bought both the Yankee Stadium accent for my brother and the retired Yankee Stadium from Christmas in the City. I've purchased the Fenway Park accent as a gift as well. They're great, don't get me wrong, but I think D56 can do so much more. They can start with more stadiums, sold in regional areas as exclusives. I also would like to see a scale of the entire stadium from an overhead view as opposed to just the facade.I like the idea of doing the old time parks as opposed to the new sponsored stadiums. A "3com Park" piece just doesn't have the same ring to it as a classic "Ebbets Field".Here is my list of the next five stadiums Department 56 should make:1: Camden Yards (1992-Current, Baltimore Orioles)2: Jacobs Field (1994-Current, Cleveland Indians)3: The Astrodome (1965-1999, Houston Astros)4: Dodgers Stadium (1962-Current, LA Dodgers)5: Veterans Stadium (1...
