Collectibles Today: an online megastore of Department 56 products and more
2007-08-18 17:00:00
Collectibles Today has been in business since 1973. They guarantee their collectible products for 365 days. Founded in 1973 by J. Roderick MacArthur was instrumental in defining the present day collectibles market. Headquarters is in Niles, Illinois. We've purchased some Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer ornaments and Thomas Kinkade ornaments from Collectibles Today. Shipments are always on time, billing is always correct, and there were no customer service issues. Can't really ask for much more. Granted, you don't get the personalized and friendly service you would get from a local independent christmas or holiday collectible shop, but for quick deadline shopping, you can't argue with the convenience.Find Department 56 Halloween sales well, today! Update on christmas decorations at various retailers
2007-08-18 15:00:00
I am not sure if it's related or not, but a few hours after I posted about which stores were helpful and which were not (my question was "When do you put out your halloween and christmas decorations and are you going to carry any Department 56 this year?"), I got an actual phone call from a customer service rep @ Lowe's. He told me they weren't carrying any halloween supplies but ALL of their christmas supplies, gadgets, decorations, artificial trees, etc., would be up by the end of September." I was floored by getting an actual call back. Last year they carried several Department 56 buildings (Rudolph, I believe) and ornaments. Now, I'll gladly include this link to Lowe's.Discover more Department56 Sales today!

Retail stores and Christmas/Halloween merchandise
2007-08-17 12:24:00
I thought I had a great idea for a post - I was going to call and email all of the big department and craft stores and ask them for the specific dates which they set up their holiday merchandise. I would also ask if they're going to carry any Department 56 items. Sounded like something that my blog audience would appreciate the scoop on. I figured the stores would be excited to reach out to a niche audience. I was wrong. Thus, only the stores which attempted to provide me with decent responses get hyperlinked:Jo-Ann Fabrics:"Thank you for your email regarding the Halloween and Christmas merchandise. The Halloween and Christmas fabrics should already be out in the stores with more arriving throughout the upcoming months. It appears the Halloween items should be out in the stores within the next 2 weeks. Christmas should start merchandising at the beginning of October. We look forward to another opportunity to be of service to you are JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores ."CVS:"Thank you fo...

Department 56 Shops in Florida
2007-08-12 13:12:00
One of my fellow Dept56 collectors was kind enough to let me know about 3 shops she's been to in Flor ida (west coast): Roberts Christmas World, Clearwater. Skip's Florist and Christmas House in Holiday, FL. She said this is one of her favorites. There is also Victorian Village, Tampa.I will add these to the Google Map of Recommended Department 56 shops next week after I return from Chicago. I'm going on business but I'm definitely going to try and find a D56 shop out there as well. I guess there is an actual Department 56 brand retail store nearby.Discover more Department56 Sales today!

New ways to find D56, Christmas or Halloween Sales
2007-08-11 11:02:00
The web has delivered many new ways to shop. There are literally hundreds of shopping engines, which are basically search engines that have indexed thousands of stores and can compare pricing easily. I've researched quite a few, searched for Department 56 products, and found some interesting results:Kaboodle.com - claims that "shopping is more fun with friends" and encourages users to discover new things from people with similar taste and style, recommend and discuss your favorite products and stores, and that you can simplify your life with wish lists and shopping lists. The above link finds multiple Department 56 matches.ShopWiki - here I found the "Mill Creek Crossing" from New England Village. In a great example of why these sites work so well, you can see at one shopping destination, it's about half the price as on the other store. Compare, compare, compare!Crowdstorm.com - Many of these newer shopping engines use reviews and recommendations from registered users. Crowdstorm ...

Demand rising for halloween information
2007-08-10 13:23:00
I try to tailor my content based on the search queries being conducted which lead people to this blog. The majority of the searches from the last ten days are halloween based, so I'm going to try and focus on more halloween posts, pictures, displays, tips and I'll try and link to more halloween sales at specific shops and online stores. Here is a sampling (about 1/4) of the keyword traffic we received recently. New England Village's Sleepy Hollow

Department 56 introduced a second village series in 1986, the New England Villa ge. This village also included "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow ".Not unlike Dickens' Village "All Hallows Eve" series, this subset fits in well with the halloween theme. While I am still searching for an authoritative collectors' checklist of pieces for this specific subset (as well as for All Hallows' Eve), here is a list of pieces that are readily available online:Sleepy Hollow Church (pictured above)Sleepy Hollow Ice Harvester Ice CartSleepy Hollow SchoolVan Tassel Manor Sleepy HollowSleepy Hollow Ichabod Crane CottageSleepy Hollow CharactersDiscover more Department56 Sales today!

A Look at Dickens' Village All Hallows Eve
2007-08-08 12:26:00
VillageObsession.com has a nice pictorial of a display they've constructed for "All Hallows Eve". If you click on the picture or link you will see several other views of this beautiful halloween layout. All Hallows' Eve is a special collection from the Dickens Village series. "Hallows' Eve" is the night before All Saints Day (Halloween), when the spirits and ghosts of the past would walk among the living. The tradition of wearing ghosts and costumes was to scare away the demons and ghosts which were walking the earth.Buildings are in this series are very Victorian-gothic.Had trouble finding a complete history list of all the pieces from this subset. What I did find however are the following:- Jack O the Lantern-All Saints Church-Theatre Of The Macabre-Barleycorn Manor-Horse Drawn Hearse-Begging For Soul Cakes-Masquerading On All Hallows Eve -Mordecai Mould Undertaker-The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeAnyone who might know of any other pieces from the collection, ...

Featured product: Magic Water
2007-08-07 12:16:00
I received an email from a reader asking me to post about his product, Magic Water ?. I asked him to send me some testimonials from customers who've used his product and he obliged.Magic Water? can be used for creating ice scenery for village displays. The owner, Dave Williams, said sales spike over the holiday season, mainly from many Department 56 villagers. On the website, the product's origin states that "Magic Water? came about as the result of a long search for the ideal water modeling resin. One that would not yellow, shrink, crack or bubble when you put debris into it. Also one that was user friendly, not needing to be heated or layered and had ample working time before setting up. Magic Water? sets up in as little as 12 hours and not more than 24 depending on the atmospheric conditions. Each carton of Magic Water? contains enough resin, 18 ounces, to make any average sized project, depending on your scale. It comes complete with a multi page color booklet and instruction gu...

"Back in my little town"

Note: I have not yet purchased anything from this company yet, but I can't seem to resist posting about this charming, Rhode Island-based ceramic village manufacturer.MyLitt leTown features regional and recognizable creations for village displays. My Little Town offers limited edition and hand painted buildings of New England Icons. Some examples of product include:Trademarks and well known icons such as Denny's, Dunkin' Donuts, White Castle Hamburgers and Benny's Home & Auto, Autocrat Coffee, Haven Bros., Del's Lemonade Stand, and the Roger Williams Park Zoo gate. They also have many buildings which are local to Rhode Island. They also produce a set of christmas ornaments, some of which are a miniature version of their buildings.Prices seem to range from $49 to $89 (for the Dunkin' Donuts). I have not yet determined if there is an aftermarket. I'll research Ebay and such. Now I can't get the song "My Little Town" out of my head.Words & music by Paul Simon:"In my little tow...

Off-Topic: Displays of Light
2007-08-05 10:38:00
Believe it or not, there are other types of holiday displays...many people are very creative and spare no expense in creating their elaborate light displays. One store I've found is Christmas Done Bright, out of Tennesse. Founded as a family business in 1992, they offer many different lines of light displays and types of products, including outdoor christmas Light s, animated christmas light displays, lighted christmas decorations, christmas lawn ornaments, holiday yard art with lights, lighted halloween yard decorations and more. They hand make each lawn ornament using steel frames with enamel paint. If you are looking for more environmentally friendly light displays, how about some solar powered displays? I did a search and found the following options:Solar IlluminationsTaylor GiftsAmazon.comSilicon SolarIt is also nice to visit some professionally designed Christmas Light Displays . A closer look at Alpine Village
2007-08-03 12:42:00
In determining which series to give to each family member, I didn't have a good feel for Alpine Villa ge . I didn't know much about the series. I turned to the knowledgeable folk over at the Yahoo! Group for advice and information on specific pieces. They were more than happy to oblige (thanks!)"Among the current buildings, the "Christmas House" and "Glass Ornament Factory," plus the accessory "Alpine Santa" make a nice grouping. (The accessory itself would be a nice gift to Santa collectors in general!)" "For anyone who brews their own beer, or who truly enjoys imported or other premium beers (as opposed to a guy who just drinks commercial beers like Budweiser because they're cheap and taste doesn't really matter), or for someone who collects fancy beer steins, the "Wolfsteiner Brewery" and accessory set "The Brew Master" might be appropriate." "Also for those beer brewers/drinkers, the retired "Alstadter Bierstube" plus retired accessory sets "At the Octoberfest," "Tap the F...

Ideas for new D56 Halloween Pieces
2007-08-02 12:22:00
Every now and then it's fun to just create new ideas, and with Halloween approaching, I thought it would be fun to come up with a few new buildings and accessories for Snow Village Halloween, so here goes:* "Smoky Bones Crematorium" (my wife actually came up with this idea - most likely the best one!): this building would have a few animated features: smoke coming out of the chimney, and a casket being pulled into one of the doors. The casket would slide in and out, slowly.* "Dead Letter Office" - would feature an eerie abandoned post office with a strangely lit window scene sneaking a peak at piles of unopened letters. This would be complimented by an accessory called "Skeletal Delivery" featuring a broken down mail truck and a skeleton postal worker.* "Haunted Trolley Museum" - this would be a larger scene with 3 or 4 abandoned trolley cars, spooky lighting, ravens, scattered trolley parts, and tires. The accessory would be a abandoned ticket booth with the sign "Haunted Trolley ...

The most frequently searched Dept 56 Halloween keywords
2007-08-01 12:29:00
If you have the task of optimizing your shop's e-commerce store website for search engine traffic, I thought it might be useful to you to look at what people are searching for in the last month. You can optimize your pages for these keyword terms, and as long as you have good supporting traffic and relevant links, you should see a decent bump in organic (free) traffic from the search engines by October:department 56 halloween - of course, the more generic terms are most frequent. Under 100 days until Halloween
2007-07-31 12:14:00
It's the last day of July, and though my wife would not want me to wish away the summer, I'll admit the fall is my favorite time of the year. The foliage, crisp evenings, the start of football season, inching closer to the holidays...I can't wait. Even though she loves summer, she's starting to feel the excitement of the fall as well - all of the fun event we attend: The Big E in West Springfield, Massachusetts, the Yankee Candle factory trip, the Turkey Bowl (every year about 40 friends gather to share food and play touch football - only one injury in six years!). I'll have to blog about the Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport, ME, an amazing event. All of this being said, my wife's favorite holiday is Halloween , and we began searching for decorations for our pumpkin carving party. Jo-Anns had a few decorations out, and Michael's was beginning to set up their Halloween crafts. We even went to Target but they still were in "Back to School" mode. We'll most likely set up our two...

A Dickens of a good find at a local flea market!
2007-07-31 01:50:00
This past Saturday I was browsing a flea market while my wife was getting her hair done. There was a little Christmas shop inside the flea market. Of course, I asked the proprietor if she had any village buildings by Department56. She said yes, and showed me three older pieces from Dickens ' Village. There was "M Fezziwig Warehouse", "The Flat of Ebenezer Scrooge" and "Old Curiosity Shop".I don't collect Dickens, but I know that is what I wanted to give my brother and sister-in-law for Christmas. Perfect. I asked her if the lighting worked, and she tested each, and showed me all sides of each building. They were perfect. I was so excited. It was a very good deal, right? It's funny, because before I chose Snow Village, I was going to choose Dickens for my christmas village, basically because I've always loved the movies, including every single remake. These pieces may end up at my office - which I have dubbed "The island of misfit pieces" -- it's where all of my buildings that don...

Seems to be demand for a Harry Potter series
2007-07-29 13:22:00
The Original Yahoo! Department 56 Collectors Group has come up with a brilliant idea for a new series - one that could be appropriate for a Halloween decor, in my opinion. Actually, several people seemed to echo the idea and say that they've sent suggestions to Department 56. The idea? None other than the world of Harry Potter . The idea is perfect and the number of buildings and accessories which could be released are endless. The idea began when a member of the group posted this question:"Would you be interested in a Dept 56 Harry Potter village?".Comments flowed back and forth the entire day yesterday:"I always thought the Harry Potter theme would make a great lighted village - can you imagine a Hogwarts Castle or an entire Diagon Alley with all the shops from the book?""Dept 56 already has a couple of Harry Potter licenses - they made secret boxes and charms and I think a couple of ornaments. That's why I thought it would have been a natural for them.""I think that this is an ob...

Off-Topic: Top Ten Christmas Movies
2007-07-25 12:39:00
10) PrancerWhat starts out as a syrupy, whiney melodrama, as dark as "The House Without a Christmas Tree", with similar themes, turns out to be very Grinchlike as townspeople rally to save the spirit of Christmas. A predictable storyline won't stop children from loving this movie. It might even make some people well up in the old eye sockets...3 out of 4 elves recommend this christmas movie!9) Santa Claus: The MovieThis movie was so hyped up. I was a freshman in college, and with a buddy of mine who was also a christmas freak, and we drove 40 miles to see the premiere. It was supposed to be "Santa Claus" as if done by George Lucas - special effects abound, and it was, visually, pretty darn impressive. What I didn't like was Dudley Moore - never a personal favorite. Like "The Grinch", perhaps the hype and the expectations were not met.3 out of 4 elves recommend this movie!8) The Santa ClauseIt's hard to imagine Tim Allen as Santa. Featured D56 shop: Bronners

Bronner's is legendary. They even have their own D56 building, as depicted in this image. If you click on the picture, you can view the descriptive page on the corporate D56 site.I was looking for some additional stores from the midwest to add to the Google Map of Recommended Department 56 shops. It was suggested that I include Bronner's.A quote from a member of the d56 yahoo group: "They say they are the largest Christmas store in the world....It is a family run business, and they are the sweetest people. I've been going there for over 20 years, and every time I go ALL of the salespeople are full of Christmas cheer...no matter what time of year it is! It is one of the happiest places to shop. If you go, go during the weekdays, when it is a bit less crowded. Also, they don't get their "new" Christmas stock until around July. So, between July and Christmas is the best shopping time"I had been waiting for an article on their history from their marketing department, but being the i...

Catzilla...ideas to help deter cats from your village displays
2007-07-20 13:17:00
I had no idea that when I posted a message to the Yahoo! D56 Group about my cat Reggie being like Godzilla, roaming through our displays, that it would spawn 20+ messages back with similar stories, and better yet, many suggested ideas for preventing the inevitable "accessory loss" due to nibbling kitty. Here are some of the ideas from the group:"Having to reposition and pick up everything they have knocked down each morning is bad enough (I hot glue down almost everything thinks to them) but it is the frigging snow covered paw prints all over the house the next day that drive me to the brink of insanity. I have tried balloons (one of my dogs will not even go in the room if there is a blown up balloon anywhere in the room) BUT the cats could care less.""I found a product called "shake away" under animal repellents that is 100% organic that might work." Creative ideas Department 56 should consider
2007-07-19 03:26:00
* Series designed for a younger demographic, so people can start developing an affection for the brand when they start earning the disposable income required to sustain the hobby. An example of this would be, perhaps, a Lego village? I know this sounds like blasphemy to most, but why not? It would be fun.* D56 could appeal to the craft set by releasing a series of unfinished buildings - paint your own. This could gain D56 into stores like Michael's and Jo-Ann Fabrics.* Combining the youth appeal and the craft element, D56 could go the next step and sell mold-making kits to bake your own village building. Anyone remember Shaker Makers or Shrinky Dinks * The poll on the sidebar illustrates several of the new building ideas we've gathered here. Only 9 people have voted so far, resulting in a tie between the Newport Mansions and the Dr. Seuss house. The poll will stay up until New Year's Eve.Discover more Department 56 Sales today!
