Plexi & Linen
2008-01-13 08:04:00 Today, I accomplished one of the many things on my to-do list. I took my beaded fire truck, Engine Co. 6, to Stanhope Framers in Boston to have it framed. I figured that since it's going to be exhibited in Bead International 2008, it should be well- protected.I discovered this frame shop through a series of internet searches. I wanted to do business with people who are skilled at creating museum-quality frames. When I walked in, it looked like an average shop, but the services they provide are exceptional. Of course, it helps to know what you want. I didn't need anything fancy - just a plexi-glass shadow-box with a white background. I chose plexi that has rounded corners with a linen background. I was offered the choice of plexi with ultraviolet protection, but the salesman told me that he didn't think it was necessary since most of the threads are covered by the glass beads. He also said that my fire truck will probably be sewn to the linen. I have a feeling that my beadwork wi...

Memory Lane
2008-01-11 07:09:00 Today, I finally got around to doing some beadwork on my Yellow Submarine! First, I added windows by stitching two pieces of clear vinyl to the back of the top layer of felt. It’s late winter of 1967. All five of us kids are getting ready for school and dancing to Penny Lane on the record player. We ranged in age from 17 down to 9 and we all loved the Beatles. Good thing my mom also liked them, because she had to listen to them seven......no make that...... eight days a week........lol!" A record player??Wait... I remember those! Submarine Sandwich
2008-01-10 06:48:00 Would you believe I wasn't finished cutting out felt??It's true. Today, I spent a good few hours cutting and trimming more felt for the foundation of what will be a beaded Beatles' Yellow Submarine . I also glued and stitched some of the layers together. I had to make sure that each piece lined up with the next. I know it seems seems slow, but this part of my creative process is very important because the outcome greatly affects the overall structure of the finished piece. After cutting the felt, these 3 odd shapes emerged from my work table. The large piece is 10 felt layers thick! Then, I stitched together the first 3 layers......and put the odd shapes into place. Then, I put on the top layer. It's a submarine sandwich! :DThe body of the sub will remain 3 separate pieces until the beadwork is finished. It will be much easier to work with that way... Now, I think I'm finally ready to start beading, but all that talk about submarines made me hungry! LOL.Oh. Before I forget, today, m... That's Alotta Yellow!
2008-01-08 06:01:00 Today, I began to accomplish one of my goals for 2008 - organizing my seed beads... You've seen my seed bead drawer. I could really use some Help! with this project... Here's what I've done so far. All of the seed beads in the photo below were originally purchased from Fire Mountain Gems a few years ago, and they came in little plastic boxes like the one in the lower right hand corner. It seems like a good way to store beads, but it really isn't. After opening a box several times, the lid becomes loose, and either it doesn't close all the way or it eventually falls off. I've had a couple of boxes of seed beads spill because of this, and it is very frustrating! So, today, I transferred all of the boxes of beads I had into ziploc bags. I also wrote down the colour and size of the bead on the bag. I think this will be a better method, especially since the bags will take up less space. My goal is to continue working on this, and hopefully organize my beads by colour. But, where are... More About: Yellow , Yello

Colour a Submarine
2008-01-07 07:09:00 Due to an overwhelming response, I have decided to try to recreate an extremely dimensional beaded replica of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine . I will say that I'm a little nervous about this, but I'm up for the challenge. This is an image that I've always loved, but I'm sure it brings back fond childhood memories for many people. So, I thought I'd try something a little different for this project by perhaps getting some longtime Beatles fans involved. If you or someone you know has any Beatlemania memories, stories, news clippings, or photos to share while I'm working on this piece, send me an email! I'd love to hear from you=:)And, speaking of childhood, I think this is a perfect project to get the kids involved in, as well. So, I created a Yellow Submarine colouring page for them. Just click the image above, and print it out. After the kids colour their submarine, send me a scan or a photo along with their first name, age, city & country, and I'll post it! Of course, j... 2008-01-06 06:48:00 YaY!! Today, I finished the freeform beaded lanyard for my aunt! I know - you're wondering how I know that it's finished. Easy! I ran out of thread! LOL. But, I'm still going to run one more piece of thread through the entire piece just to reinforce it...I also made these earrings to match. They are tiny glass capsules that have 14K gold posts. Inside, there are tiny seashells and a bit of sand from the beach. I found the shells on Scusset Beach here in Massachusetts a few years ago. I have never seen seashells that tiny before in my life, so I don't believe these earrings could ever be duplicated. They're a birthday gift for my aunt, but shhhhh... don't tell... it's a secret ;)Tommorrow, I will unveil plans for my next adventure in bead embroidery... P.S. To anyone this pertains to (particularly Ryan O.) I am not interested in joining Google Adsense. First of all, I will not endorse anyone but myself (and Beaucoup Beads). Secondly, I do not want a bunch of distracting ads on... More About: Sense
Grateful Doll
2008-01-05 08:03:00 Today, I received a very special gift in the mail from Beadin' Gram - a beaded Dotee doll! What a wonderful surprise! She is darling, and she fits in the palm of my hand! Thank you so much! :D I have been seeing these dolls around for awhile. Dotee in Australia created the design, and I adore them. They are so happy and full of love. I will hang this precious little doll near my beading table, and she will keep me company while I do beadwork! :DWhich reminds me, this is just one example of why I love the blogging world. We have the opportunity to meet generous people from all over the world who share similar interests with us. It is not all one big ego-trip where we comment to get comments in return. We comment to learn from each other. We comment to inspire each other. We make each other laugh. We comfort each other when we are feeling down. And, the more we get to know one another, the more we really care. We are a positive community - one that I am grateful to be a part of. I... More About: Doll
Free Beadin'
2008-01-04 07:06:00 Wow! This is my 500th post! Time certainly does fly... And, thanks to all who voted in my latest poll. I still haven't decided which vehicle I'm going to bead next. I have narrowed it down to either the Beatles' Yellow Submarine or the Boston Trolley Car. The DeLorean Time Machine is a close 3rd since that's the one that I voted for. Whichever piece I do decide to do, will require some research, and a drawing. So, I'm going to think about it a bit more before I decide... That's okay, though. I need a little free time to myself. Once in awhile, it's good to stop thinking and planning, and just let the beads happen...I don't know if I've ever mentioned this before, but a few years years ago, I made the above beaded lanyard for my aunt as a gift. She works in a hospital and she used this lanyard everyday to wear her identification on. The lanyard was created using the freeform peyote technique, and it measured approx. 32". The blue & green colours are inspired by the beac... More About: Free

2008-01-03 07:39:00 Thanks so much for all of your comments regarding my beaded self portrait! As always, I'm sad to have completed a piece so quickly, but not to worry... I have a feeling the Maxell Girl will return in the future. She has many more voyages ahead of her... ..Today, I have a few things to update on EBSQ, Myspace, and on my Saatchi Gallery page. I also have to burn some images to disc, clean off my beading table, as well as think about my upcoming website design. These are all time consuming, but necessary. So, in the meantime, I thought it would be the perfect time to tell you about the Eighth Annual Weblog Awards. This is an annual non-profit competition that determines which blogs are the 'best of the best'. Of course, no blog is the 'best'. Each one has its own unique personality. I normally don't care about blog awards, but the winners of this one earn the opportunity for more traffic to their blog. And, just think - if you take the time to nominate at least 3 of your favourit... More About: Calling , Bloggies

Crazy Goals
2008-01-01 05:39:00 I've been working on my beaded self portrait almost all evening. Now, all I have left is to wait for the paint to dry. Then, I can stitch my beadwork to the canvas. In the meantime, I thought it would be a good time to jot down a few goals for 2008. Here goes: Spend more time beading.Organize my seed beads.Launch my website. Get more pieces published. Enter more shows. Attend more art exhibits.Tour a bead factory in the Czech Republic. Remain anonymous. Yes, you read the last one correct. I have decided to start beading under my alias The Lone Beader. I have been toying with this idea for awhile now, and finally, one of my best friends inspired me to do it. This means that I will now sign all my pieces with this name. I will also enter all shows and competitions using this name, and I will submit all work for publication under this name. I would also like to be referred to by other bloggers only as The Lone Beader and it's definition. Why? Because this is the name people know and l... More About: Crazy , Goals
The Mastertape
2007-12-30 19:45:00 When I was in London last month, I went to see my favourite band, Porcupine Tree, play at the Kentish Town Forum. I met up with a friend to go see the show, and we were lucky enough to get up front near the stage. Sometime during the show, I could feel the power of the music coming through the speakers, and at that very moment, I could feel my hair blowing in the wind. That was the inspiration for my first beaded self portrait, the Maxell Girl.(click to enlarge)It's true. My Creator has a mastertape, and this morning, I actually listened to it. I painted this fiery red & orange Planet Earth on a 16" x 20" canvas. I think I painted for almost 3 hours. So far, I like it, but my Creator says it's not complete... :0 More About: Aster
Worship Service
2007-12-29 07:23:00 (click to enlarge)There are those who turn to God for strength and guidance in this uncertain life. But, when you feel as dazed and confused as I've been feeling lately, a little Led Zeppelin can provide a suitable alternative. Even those who believe Led Zeppelin is Satanic must agree that they are musical gods, and listening to them can be a rather 'enlightening' experience. Turn up the volume and decide for yourself. Meanwhile, I'm gonna go grab another beer... :0Dazed And Confused... More About: Service , Worship
Decisions, Decisions
2007-12-28 19:03:00 Thanks so much for your comments on my last post. This has been a tough week for me, but I'm trying to keep moving forward. Slowly but surely, my beaded self portrait, The Maxell Girl, is coming together. Here's what I've accomplished:First, you'll notice a close-up of the beaded lampshade. I used size 11 seed beads for that. Then, I began to cover the edges of the beadwork with more felt. I also stitched sterling silver wire legs onto the Le Corbusier chair. Next, I'm going to add a little felt around my hair. Then I will stitch the table (which is not shown) to the front of the piece. I believe that most of the beadwork is finished, so all I have left is the canvas background for this piece.Since this piece is nearing completion, I've begun to think about what to bead next. I am anxious to start out the New Year with a new project idea. But, I need your help to decide, so I created a poll which is located at the top of the sidebar. The choices are: the Beatles' Yellow Subma... More About: Decisions
All Beads go to Heaven
2007-12-27 16:37:00 This morning, I looked through my box of old projects from when I first began beading. There, I found these two French-beaded roses. I think I made them about 4 or 5 years ago. Even though they took me a long time to make, I put them in the box because they weren't really perfect in my eyes. I used Chinese seed beads, silver wire instead of red, and I wrapped the stems with sticky floral tape instead of embroidery floss. But, they are still beautiful, and should never be forgotten. These flowers have finally found a purpose. Yesterday, my union brother George passed away unexpectedly. His heart failed at the young age of 51. I worked with George in the rock-n-roll business for a very long time. One thing I will always remember is that he was very supportive of music and the arts, and every time I saw him, he asked about my beadwork. He encouraged me to pursue it, and he told me to show my artwork whenever possible. George was also one of the first people to ever comment on this blog... More About: Heaven , Beads
