Active Vista Film Festival Screening Schedules
2008-11-21 10:26:00 "While it is true that no song, no poem, no painting, no novel, no film has ever stopped a tank, prevented a bullet, or overthrown a corrupt government, the virtue of every art form in enriching the Filipino spirit cannot be rivaled. While movies can't feed a hungry child, bring justice to the oppressed, or solve poverty, they can open our minds to the plight of children against starvation, make us understand the worth of justice and peace, and get us involved in the struggle against poverty and oppression in many ways that newspapers, classroom lectures or a thousand publicity ads could ever hope to. Because while art may not change the world, it can change the way we view the world. For true revolution begins in the imagination."ACTIVE VISTA FILM FESTIVALChanging the way we view the worldNovember 26 to December 2Robinsons Galleria IndieSinePELIKULAFILM SCREENINGSFESTIVAL OPENINGNovember 26, Wednesday7:00 pmBy Invitation OnlyOpening of Exhibit:MOVING PICTURESBy the Philippine Dail... 2008-11-21 10:23:00 PAEA presents"Titser, Bawal Ang Nakasimangot sa Klasrum."Today?s Humor in the ClassroomNovember 29, 2008, 8:00 am to 5:00 pmPETA Bldg. Studio A & BHave you been grouchy in your class? Arrogant? Bad-tempered? Chances are, your students have already labeled you as masungit. Some have probably wanted to skip from your class.Humor is one of the best methods in helping students learn, that is at least for those who have the sense to understand humor?s significance in today?s lifestyle. However, our Filipino patriarchal mindset has created a tremendous gap between teacher-student relationship. The teacher, with that powers that be, has wittingly or unwittingly put himself into a pedestal which students are unable to reach. Added to that are still many factors that affect the teacher?s temperament which then influence the classroom mood. If only the student can say, "Tister, bawal ang nakasimangot sa klasrum."When you are in a laughing, funny mode, your students learn a great deal from... More About: Presents

Bea Valdes Presents Bedtime Stories @ SLab
2008-11-18 07:48:00 Designer Bea Valdes presents Bedtime Stories , an exhibit of sculptures of animals adorned with crystals and semi-precious stones. Inspired by fairy tales, these whimsical creatures bring us into a darkened landscape where the sinister lurk with the enchanted. Fable and folklore, as we find all throughout the history of oral literature, were often embellished with exaggerated or gruesome details as stories were passed on from one person to the next. Women, who sat in groups as they worked on tasks such as knitting and spinning, often recounted such tales of gore.Valdes, a graduate of the University of the Philippines and the Inchbald School in London, is a much awarded and published designer often seen on the pages of Vogue, W and Harpers. Known to be a staunch supporter of local artisans and their craft, Valdes received the Katha Award for Creative Excellence in Accessory Design in 2006.Bedtime Stories by Bea Valdes runs from November 28, 2008 to January 3, 2009 at SLab. Revenge & Revolution in Gantimpala Theater's El Filibusterismo
2008-10-31 13:18:00 ?REVENGE AND REVOLUTION IN GANTIMPALA THEATER?S EL FILIBUSTERISMO!?El Filibusterismo or the Fili, the continuation of Noli Me Tangere, is about the arrival of Don Simoun, a business magnate and jeweler, a mystical, demoniacal figure whose only thoughts are to overthrow the existing order, the colonial rule. He is moved partly by political motives and partly by a personal desire for revenge. Thus, he uses his wealth to promote the corruption of the ruling class, its arrogance towards the natives and the oppression machinery - and at the same time to draw the attention of the oppressed people to the conditions which he himself, to some extent, has caused, and to provoke their opposition.Characters that were originally from the Noli return - Basilio, Dona Victorina, and Padre Salvi - while new ones are introduced: Kabesang Tales and his struggle for justice; the nationalist student Isagani; the Indio priest Padre Florentino. Through them the colonial milieu is expanded--its officialdom,... More About: Revolution , Revenge

Pamela Yan Santos? Like Exhibit @ Blanc
2008-10-31 13:15:00 Pamela Yan Santos ' LikeIn her upcoming solo exhibition entitled LIKE, Pamela Yan Santos explores personal history as known and remembered through various indices such as photographs, written and scribbled language and other signifiers that many of us consider as mundane.Working in mixed media and in layers, she uses the processes of serigraphy, painting and collage as components to a kind of visual syntax intended to essay personal episodes and remembrances of emotional significance. The approaches through which she interrelates the various processes make the works resonate as wish, as a point of comparison, as a mnemonic or as a conjunction, which are among the permutations of the word LIKE.From a personal perspective, the works bridge the artist's past and present by transforming events through time into a synchronous testament, expressing how agreeably or uncannily the two echo and mirror each other.Pam Yan -Santos graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Paint...
