How to make hot process liquid soap
2008-03-16 19:30:00
**For those who have taken my Handmade Bath Products and made the bath jelly, here is how to make your own liquid soap if you do not want to use the clear, unscented liquid soap from Whole Foods. If you chose not to make your own soap check out www.yaley.com and search for clear liquid soap. This is a basic recipe for liquid soap. Although it may appear very involved, it is quite easy. If you would like a recipe using different oils, check out the lye calculator that Magestic Mountain Sage has on their website. The water may seem a bit much but it is okay since much of the water will boil out in the cook.Ingredients* 23 oz coconut oil* 25 oz of olive oil* 10.15 oz potassium hydroxide (KOH not lye)* 30-36 ounces distilled water* 3 ounces borax (supermarket mule train brand)* Alcohol in spray bottle. (I usually use gin or isopropyl alcohol)Tools Needed:* Large double boiler (stainless steel- will not react with lye)* Stick blender* Candy or meat thermometer1. Don protective equipment,...

2008-03-15 23:43:00
I wanted to say that I had a great group of ladies in Handmade Bath Products Class at CSM today. It was a pleasure having each and everyone one of you in my class. I hope I have inspired you to take more classes in making your own bath and body products. And I see you in my upcoming classes. Please check back on my announcement for future classes. As I was writing my entry, I had an idea. If you create your bath bombs to look like muffins or cupcakes and you want to give them as a gift, why not package them in a pink pastry box. You know the kind you get from the bakery. I am know going to hunt for a resource for anyone to purchase. If anyone knows where to get them online, please let me know.
Shea Butter Bath Bomb
2008-03-15 19:23:00
Here is another great bath fizzy bomb recipe from Lynden House that you may want to try or add to your collection.Ingredients½ tsp. food coloring or liquid soap dye½ tsp. Fragrance oil or blend of Essential oils1 ½ cups baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)2 tablespoons epsom salts or refined sea salt¾ cup citric acid1 tablespoon melted shea butterSpray mister filled with water or witch hazelDirectionsPlace your fragrance and dye in your bowl first. Next add the baking soda and salt. Mix well together. Add your shea butter and again mix well. Add your citric acid last. Note: you don't want to add the citric acid to the liquids as it will cause the citric acid to react. Stir mixture together with a spoon to disperse the fragrance and dyes. Blend the entire mixture with your hands until the color and dye are evenly dispersed and the mixture begins to hold its shape in your hand when you press it together. If you find your mixture is too dry and not holding it's shape, spray one or two mi...

Color Blending of Liquid Colorants
2008-03-14 21:57:00
One day I was at Opalz Zoaps and Annie was creating a soap for a customer that replicated an US Flag. She had a neon blue color that she thought was too bright so I recommend to her to add a small amount of black. It worked. So, I thought to myself there may a color guide that might help everyone out on creating alternative colors for your soaps, bath and body products.Achieve all new colors by adding small amounts of a second color to the first color. Adding a drop of black to any color will make it a deeper shade.Aqua = green + blueCoral = pink + yellowRose = red + blackLime = yellow + greenMagenta = wine + redMoss green = green + redPink = just a touch of redPurple = red + blueTeal = green + blackTurquoise = blue + greenWine = purple + redNavy = blue + blackIf you are interested in a terra cotta color, I am thinking that maybe orange with a drop or two of brown might do. I will have to experiment on that one and let you know. For more information about mixing colors, here are some...

Altered Books....
2008-03-10 19:22:00
I know that this does not have anything to do with making your own bath and body products, but I wanted to pass along this information to all of my readers.I have taken alot of classes through The Nova Studio. And one of her teachers, Diane Bouchard who teaches classes on altered books (and more) has a website (http://www.alteredbookstudio.com/) that I found by chance while surfing the internet. While I read it she mentions that in Nov. 2006, a crew from the HGTV show, That's Clever, came to tape a segment. According to her website, the segment should be airing sometime in April 2008 and will let everyone know when it air. If you were ever interested in altered books, but were afraid to take one of her classes, then this would be the opportunity to see her in action. Once I find out this info, I will pass it along. In January of this year, Diane start her blog (http://www.alteredbookstudio.blogspot.co m/) to keep in touch with her students. Check her blog out for more information.

The Aromatherapy Book by Jeanne Rose
2008-03-06 19:35:00
On Sunday, March 2nd, I was in Book Buyers in Mountain View. I just happened to be browsing in the health section and I found a shelf dedicated to aromatherapy. Now I will tell you that there are alot of aromatherapy books out on the market. Alot of them are dedicated to using them for health purposes, but I was looking for a book on aromatherapy that I could use for soapmaking and body products. And by luck I found one that I really like. It is The Aromatherapy Book by Jeanne Rose . Although, it was copyrighted in 1992, I found the information most useful. It has a useful aroma glossary, description of essential oils, and useful tables of information. Plus information on aromatics and equipment, chapters on cosemetic aromatherapy, perfume and the scents of smell and ritual aromatics. It has a source list chapter. Like I said it was published in 1992, so more than likely some of the sources may be out of business (and as of this writing I have not checked). And it maybe out of print b...

Making Salves
2008-03-05 19:45:00
Just what is a salve and why would I want to make it?A salve is simply an ointmint for your skin. Have chapped lips? You can smear yourself with a petroleum based product like vaseline or chap-stick or you can very easily make your own lip salve by combining 5 parts olive oil with 1 part melted beeswax. Yes it can be that simple! You can adjust how hard your salve is by adding more oil to make it softer or adding more melted beeswax to make it firmer.Basic Lip Salve 5 teaspoons warm Olive Oil1 teaspoon beeswax, meltedMelt beeswax in doubleboiler, never over direct heat. Add olive oil to melted beeswax. Stir until incorporated, remove from heat and pour into containers. This is what my family uses for our First Aid Salve. The recipe is one I created after researching different botanicals & essential oil and then using the advice a very wise woman, I looked around at what botanicals grew naturally on our land. This salve is used for minor cuts, scrapes and burns. Be sure the wound ...

The Science of Eliminating Odors
2008-03-01 22:33:00
According to scientists, air fresheners date back to the times of the ancient Egyptians, who used musk and other natural products to scent their homes and their tombs. I suspect it goes back even further, to the cave woman who figured out that throwing a pine cone into the cooking fire made her whole cave smell better. Over the years, man (or woman) has discovered many things that eliminate odors, and made use of them all ? from oils secreted by animals, to flower petals and plants to chemicals that are specially designed to eliminate odors. Today?s air freshener market is a multi-billion dollar one comprised of mechanical air fresheners, sprays, candles, wax, scented gels, liquids, potpourri, aromatic woods and more. In fact, one market periodical estimated that 80% of American adult would buy at least one home air fragrance product this year. The first generation of modern air fresheners were marketed in 1948. Those consisted of little more than a perfumed fragrance in an aerosol m...

At Last You Can Add Colorful Designs To Your Homemade Soaps
2008-02-27 19:36:00
There are many ways to add colorful designs to your homemade soaps. We will discuss using the cold process soap making method to make soaps with intriguing designs.First, you will need to start with a plain white base. A base of 30 percent coconut oil, 5 percent castor oil and 65 percent lard (for vegaterians try using vegetable shortening) makes a nice white base that lathers and conditions well.To make tri-color soap with nice triangular designs, first make one third of your base recipe to pour into your standard block soap mold. Once the base has traced, add colorant of your choice, then prop your mold at an angle so that when you pour your base into your mold it will fill only one corner of your mold instead of the whole bottom. To do this, place a few books under one side of your mold to raise one side a few inches from your counter then place books against the other side of the mold to keep it from moving. Pour your soap down the side of your mold that still rests on the counte...

Imprinted Soap
2008-02-26 19:44:00
According to Kelly Ewing, author of Making Candles and Soap s for Dummies, imprinted soap is simply a bar of soap that you have stamped when wet.If you like to try to make this bar of soap, the author suggests the following steps:1. Choose your stamp. Try to choose a stamp that doesn't have alot of intricate detail. At your craft store, look for stamps with sharper edges. Metal stamps work better than others.2. Melt your soap base.3. Pour you melted soap. A square or rectangle bar of soap works well for this soap. But Life of the Party, has a hex and circle geo shaped molds that would also work. Try to match your mold size to the approximate sign of your stamp so that the edges are not as visible.4. Wait for the soap to get and then gently place your stamp in the mold.5. Let your stamp remain in the mold for approximately 15 to 30 minutes. If you remove your stamp too early, the soap is still liquid and runs back into the spot where your stamp was.6. Remove your stamp.7. Gently smoo...

Homemade Bon Bons for the Bath
2008-02-24 21:15:00
In my search I found this creative recipe for your bath. If you ever made a bath melt this recipe is very similiar that. This would be a great addition to any gift basket full of bath and body products.Just to let you know that this recipe makes 12 bonbons.INGREDIENTS:9 tablespoons virgin coconut oil (see note)3 tablespoons honey3 tablespoons baking soda3 tablespoons sea salt3 drops ylang ylang pure essential oil (optional)***Since coconut oil has a melting point of 76 degrees F, the temperature of your oil will make a difference in the method you use. Coconut oil does not need to be refrigerated, but once you make the bonbons keep them there so that they don't melt. You can't start with refrigerated coconut oil because it is very hard, so start with room temperature. If your room temperature is above 76 degrees, the oil will be liquid?you will need to stir in the ingredients and then pour the mix into an ice cube tray, mini muffin tin, or similar receptacle. Then refrigerate until...

Secrets of Aromatherapy
2008-02-22 23:04:00
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile liquid plant materials. It is a also called is essential oils. The use of aromatherapy can benefit you in many ways. Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes in combination with other alternative medical practices and spiritual beliefs. There are about 150 essential oils. Most of these oils have antiseptic properties; some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antidepressant and expectorant. Two basic mechanisms are offered to explain the purported effects. One is the influence of aroma on the brain, especially the limbic system through the olfactory system. It has a particularly Western currency and persuasion. Bathing in essential oils is an all-natural way to unblock congested pores and ease the symptoms of fatigue and muscle tension.Aromatherapy can also be used to ease the discomfort of suffering from colds and flus. Oils suc...
