BUBBLY BEIJING ARCHITECTURE

One of the new buildings being constructed to host the Beijing Olympics in 2008 is The National Aquatics Centre designed by PTW architects from Sydney in collaboration with CSCEC China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The building is being constructed of a steel spaceframe and 100,000 ETFE pillows that are only eight one-thousandths of an inch thick to reduce energy cost by 30%. The construction of the Aquatics Centre will be completed in October 2007 and will host the swimming and diving events.

Their latest project The McLeod Mirror is a 30" display with a built-in computer and webcam that is designed to record the onlooker and construct a collage of their image out of images of everyone else who has stood before it.

Balestra Berlin in cooperation with Modulorbeat, developed this concept for the Barcelona based night club Kubik that utilizes a temporary open-air installation as a home for cultural, musical events. The installation is made up of 275 illuminated industrial tanks that are stacked on top of each other and constantly light up and change colors to the rhythm.

This intriguing wave machine/wall/billboard was first launched at CeBIT way back in 2003 and was most recently the show stopping frontispiece for the BIO 2007 conference in Boston. Brooklyn Art Project member Illegal Art used 6,272 Post-It notes to completly cover the windows of a Brooklyn building that spelled out the words "TO DO". Illegal Art's installation aims to prompt passersby to write down their own 'to do' lists and add to the collective consciousness of personal promises and social commitments.

Spanish Company, Hotel Movil, has rigged up a mobile hotel that can accommodate 50 people on an 18 wheel truck trailor. Once parked, the cab detaches and with a press of a button the cargo hold unfolds into an 11 bedroom hotel, complete with private bathrooms and even a second-floor outdoor terrace. Each room features heating and AC, an LCD TV, DVD, and internet access.

Brooklyn-based Situ Studio was commissioned to design and build a pavilion for this summer's CitySol green arts and energy festival, which stared yesterday at Stuyvesant Cove Park in NYC. The 2,000-square-foot pavilion is fashioned of interlocking pieces of plywood covered with a biodegradable material made from cornstarch. Made from 720 half square sheets of 7mm thick corrugated cardboard, stacked in 360 layers, this cavernous sound space is set within a 2.5m cube. As a space for listening to and experiencing music, the initial concept for the design developed from the architect’s ambition to create a strong spatial intensity and a distinct internal atmosphere.
