The Loch Ness Monster, The Legend
2008-03-25 22:55:00 Loch Ness is in Scotland, near the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is a lake of fresh water, with warm waters in the surface and very cold in the depths. It has 56.4 square Km (21.8 square miles). There are some points where the depth reaches 200 meters , in addition to numerous underwater canals that flow to the sea. It's a lake surrounded by mountains, what makes it very shady. It is said that the Loch Ness Monster , also known as Nessie, lives there. The characteristics of the lake make very hard to investigate about the existence of Nessie.Around the legend, it has been created a commerce that benefits the zone: hotels, merchandising, souvenirs, photomontages...But the belief in the existence of a huge creature that inhabits the Loch Ness is not modern. The first reference to the Loch Ness Monster is in 565 A.C. A missionary called Saint Columba encountered a strange creature.Since then, the sightings of these creatures, both inside or out from the water, have been counted in hundreds... Cave Of Crystals
2008-03-21 22:03:00 In the year 2000, and by chance, the Cave Of Crystals was discovered. It is in the mines zone of Chihuahua (Mexico). In this area, there are the most valuable mines of silver and lead in the world. This cave is filled with crystals of selenite (gypsum), some of the biggest ones in the world. Many of them are longer than 11 meters (36 feet). This was possible due to the high temperatures reached inside the cave during thousands of years, approximately 58º Celsius (136.4º Fahrenheit). It is thought that these macro-crystals were formed under water, in a complex crystallization process, with uncommon conditions.Nowadays there's no water in the Cave Of Crystals. Currently, the temperature of the cave is kept constant by a ventilation system, but there's some areas in the cave that reach 45º Celsius and more (113º Fahrenheit). The humidity of the Cave prevents human beings from staying inside for more than 20 minutes. The size of the Cave Of Crystals is 50 meters long and 30 meter width (1...
10,000 B.C. A Mythical And Not Historical Movie
2008-03-21 21:21:00 10,000 B.C. was shown for first time on March 7th in all over the world. Its director is Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day", "Godzilla"...).The reviews on this movie are really terrible. But the truth is that I've watched this movie recently and I liked it, and I can recommend it.It has the quality of the big movies of the mythical genre (Conan The Barbarian, Scorpion King...).Maybe the problem of this movie is its name. It is based on a fictional story with fantasy elements: a witch, some prophecies, a mixture of civilizations that never lived together. Just like in Conan. But there's many people that took it seriously. There are critics that, trying to analyze the film from the historical point of view, come to be hilarious. In some reviews I've read complaints about the presence of dinosaurs in the movie (that is located in 10,000 BC). But in the movie there is no dinosaurs. If they call dinosaur to a mammoth, we can have a big laugh. Mammoths lived at least until 4,500 BC.In... More About: Movie , Historical
The Pink Panther , The Pink Star
2008-03-19 18:48:00 The Pink Panther as a cartoon appeared by chance. There was a movie called "The Pink Panther ", by Blake Edwards, released March 20 1963. They needed an animation for illustrating the credits at the beginning of the film. So Edwards called Friz Freleng (the creator of Bugs Bunny) for making a cartoon that may be fun, that doesn't speak, and be of pink color. The character that was created for that opening sequence was so eye-catching that appeared in "The Times" cover. The Pink Panther, with some aristocratic look and some pop-art style, had great possibilities. So the producers thought in doing a cartoon movie, independently from the movie. So they did an animation short film. Its star was the Pink Panther, and that same year it won an Oscar for the best animation short. With this short film started the series of the Pink Panther. Movies were done, comics, merchandising of all kinds... that is still alive even nowadays. The music of the Pink Panther was done by Henry Mancini (the compos... More About: Star

Pixies And Saint Patrick's Day
2008-03-06 22:16:00 Pixies are considered guardians of Nature as fairies, elfs and gnomes. They come from the Viking and Celtic mythology. And have always been associated with witches, fairies, and druids, because they use them as spies because of their small size.Following the tradition, their magic can't affect someone who carries a four-leaf clover, or an image of Saint Patrick. The legend tells that Saint Patrick threw the pixies out of the house of God. In the 17th March, the day of Saint Patrick, it is said that the pixies and all the other magical beings come back from their hidden places to make pranks. That's why in the day of Saint Patrick it's mandatory to carry a four-leaf clover, as it is a protection element against magic. When Saint Patrick founded the first church in Ireland, he invited the Celts to convert to Christianism. The legend says that the Druids, worrying about loosing their power over people, invoked a legion of mischievous Pixies to complicate the life of Saint Patrick, so he... More About: Pixies
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Timeless Writer
2008-03-06 19:33:00 John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was born in Bloemfontein (South Africa). His parents were English. His mother decided to leave South Africa and move to England. Tolkien was 3 years old and his brother 2.They settled in Sarehole Mill, near Birminham. He won't never see his father again, because he died the year after his wife left South Africa. When Tolkien was twelve, his mother also died, and he and his brother became orphans, and went under the care of their aunt and the catholic priest Francis Xavier Morgan. Francis was of Spanish origin, and had always helped Tolkien's mother. She had converted to Catholicism. So Tolkien was educated in the Catholic faith. When Tolkien was 16 years old, he met Edith Mary Bratt. She was orphan too, and they fell in love. Father Francis didn't want that this relationship continued because he was afraid that Tolkien may not end his studies. So Tolkien awaited until he was 21 years old, and the evening of his birthday he wrote to Edith tellin... More About: Timeless , Writer

The Decision Of The King
2008-02-18 13:04:00 There was a distant country that was in war. The King knew that their defeat was near. His soldiers were very weak and their enemies clearly outnumbered their forces. The King was a widower, and he only had a daughter that he loved very much. He thought "I don't care if I die, but I would like to protect my daughter". So he went to the rooms of her daughter, and said her: "Dear daughter, I don't want that my enemies could capture you. I don't care if I die, but I want to keep you safe. So cut off your hair, wear these rags. Here you are the royal jewels. Take a horse and get away from here".The princess said him: "Father, I want to suffer the same luck of the women of our country. I don't fear what they could do to me. I think that what you're asking me is unfair".Her father didn't want to hear her, and forced her to follow his orders. The princess, with her hair cut off, and wearing rags, rode a horse through the night into the forests. At dawn, she was away from her kingdom, ... More About: Decision
The Love Of Cupid
2008-02-12 19:53:00 Cupid is the name of the God of Love in the Roman mythology. In Greek mythology, he was called Eros.He is the son of Venus, the Goddess of Love, and of Mars, the God of War. Thus, he represents the passionate love.Eros is the younger of the gods in the Olympus, and is depicted winged. His rebellious and capricious personality caused great troubles amongst the gods and the mortals, as with his bow and arrows he made people fall in love following his whims. Cupid's arrows symbolize the desire, the feelings and love.It was said that he used to be in company of his mother, but he even caused problems to her, as he also threw his arrows of love to his mother. There's a love story between Cupid and Psyche. Psyche was a gorgeous mortal, so beautiful that Venus was very jealous of her, and she sent Cupid to punish her. But when Cupid saw Psyche, he fell in love with her.As Cupid was a god, and Psyche was mortal, it was forbidden that she can look at him, so they met in the dark. But the si... More About: Cupid

2008-01-29 23:07:00 Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was born in 1869 in Pokrovskoye (Russia). Many kings, tsars and emperors have had the advice of a wise man, or a wizard, but it could be said that Rasputin is the last known sorcerer that a tsar had.Rasputin grew up in the beautiful fields of Siberia without any kind of studies or education, and survived stealing cattle. He had two brothers that died drowned. He named his children with the same names as his brothers. When he was eighteen, he was punished and sent to Verkhoturye Monastery. After three months in this monastery, he had a vision of the Virgin Mary, and this started his life as a mystic.Short time after this, he joined a sect called the Khlysts, that used to make many parties and orgies. Unicorns, Symbols Of Purity
2008-01-21 21:25:00 In its origins, the Unicorn was a creature depicted as a white horse, with antelope hooves, billy-goat beard, and a horn in its forehead. But with the pass of time, fantasy artists have depicted the Unicorn as a horse with a horn in its forehead and lacking of the other elements. Some also depict the Unicorn winged. There are ancient Greek, Roman, and Macedonian stories that tell about a creature with a single horn. Some say that the origin of those stories may lay in the travels that they did into the India, and they are describing the Indian rhinoceros.Other origins of the Unicorn can be found in the viking mythology and tell about a sea creature that has a horn in its forehead and probably it's actually a cetacean called narval. But both the narval and the rhinoceros are very different from a horse with a horn in its forehead. One of the first versions about the Unicorn is the one that the Greek physician Ctesias did in 400 B.C., in one of the expeditions to India. He talks about a w... More About: Symbols , Purity
