Espen Sketching Character
2007-11-05 18:46:00
My son Espen is three and a half years old now and is very interested in drawing. I mentioned in my previous post how I like sitting around sketching with my Faber-Castell PITT artist pen. Awhile back, Espen saw me use it and wanted one himself. So I gave him one and he’s been using it quite a bit. Last night, when I was sketching in my recliner, he came up on my lap and took over. Here’s a character he drew. I thought he did a really good job! Technorati Tags: Art, Drawing, Sketching

Sketching With PITT Brush Pen
2007-11-05 04:09:00
I’ve mentioned this before (a long time ago), but one of my favorite things is to sit in my comfy chair in front of the TV, watching a good movie and sketching in my sketch book. I use a Faber-Castell PITT artist pen of the B variety for this. It’s a really high-quality, fairly cheap brush pen with a flexible point to it that that creates very nice line that can be varied from thick to thin like a normal brush. An excellent exercise that I recommend to other artists, is to use this pen to draw things (characters, scenery– whatever) without a pencil sketch underneath. I’ve found that it really increases my precision and efficiency when I then start drawing real projects. I’ve posted a couple of examples above. I usually can’t draw like this (that is, inking directly without a sketch) on real projects because it leaves no room for error. But as an exercise, it’s really useful. And, above all, very enjoyable! One of the things I recommend t...

A Page Out Of My Book
2007-11-01 01:40:00
I’m trying something new for my book, painting the pages with textured borders. I wasn’t too happy with the way the inked and Photoshop colored ones turned out. So instead I’m painting the whole graphic novel in Corel Painter, using the Wacom Cintiq 21UX graphics tablet. Click on the thumbnail to see a full view of this page. Kung Fu Panda Teaser Trailer
2007-10-30 03:29:00
Kung Fu Panda from Dreamworks, starring Jack Black, among others, looks like it could be a very entertaining movie. There’s a new teaser trailer out with some comments (and general wackiness) from Jack Black thrown it. Take a look! Technorati Tags: Film, Movies, Animation

Philip Pullman Interview
2007-10-28 15:55:00
Here is an interview from the Chicago Sun-Times with Philip Pull man , author of the His Dark Materials trilogy. I’m currently reading the books– I just finished the first one, The Golden Compass. Or rather, I’m listening to a wonderful audio production of the books while I work, narrated by the author with an excellent cast doing the dialogue for the characters. Model of Scrooge McDuck’s money bin
2007-10-28 02:32:00
I’m a big fan of the old Disney comics and Carl Barks’ work in particular. So it’s interesting to see that someone took the time to build a real model of Scrooge McDuck’s money bin. Looks really good! Technorati Tags: Comics, Disney

Lio movie deal
2007-10-25 04:11:00
The strip has only been around for a little over a year, and already Lio by Mark Tatulli has been noticed by Hollywood, according to Editor & Publisher. From the article: “Producer David Kirschner has made a deal with Universal Press Syndicate for the film, reported Variety magazine.” It’s so well-deserved and if the movie turns out to be half as good as the strip, it going to be fantastic. New Cintiq
2007-10-24 05:23:00
In november, Wacom will introduce a new screen tablet, the Cintiq 12WX. I really like the look of this, although it is a bit on the small side. I have the 21 inch model, which is pretty large and gives me a great amount of screen real estate for drawing and sketching. I imagine the 12 inch model will be ideal for using on your lap. Sketching on the Cintiq
2007-10-23 04:08:00
I’m really hard at work on my book, so there’s not much time for anything else nowadays. I’m getting really into it, and I’m especially enjoying working on the Cintiq . One of the huge advantages I’ve found in recent weeks as I switched from using an Intuos tablet to the Cintiq, is how much more accurately I can draw now. I save a lot of time not messing around and drawing very precise lines instead. Here’s another panel… Technorati Tags: Art, Books, Children’s Books, Cintiq, Comics, Digital Art, Drawing, Graphic Novel, Tablet, Wacom

Hocus Pocus by Focus!
2007-10-20 02:35:00
Even though it’s somewhat off-topic around here, I just have to post this, because it’s one of my absolute favorite videos of all time. This is why we have Youtube, people! It’s a live performance from 1973 by Dutch group Focus and features a rendition of their most famous song, Hocus Pocus. Yodeling and fantastic guitars– does it get any better!? Classic Literature As Graphic Novels
2007-10-19 02:56:00
I keep thinking I’d love to do a graphic novel adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream someday. Don’t know if that’ll ever happen, but I think it would be a lot of fun. Anyway, there’s a new publisher in Britain, Classic al Comics focusing on graphic novel adaptations of classic literature, such as Macbeth, Henry V and Jane Eyre. It looks very promising and I hope they do well! Some of the artwork is pretty stunning. Technorati Tags: Books, Comics, Graphic Novels Novel, Literature

Creating Disney’s Snow White
2007-10-16 03:50:00
I always like seeing the process behind different kinds of creative work. Here’s an interesting video showing how Disney created Snow White back in 1937. (It’s a nice documentary, but some of the comments about the women working on the coloring is a bit… well, wrong and hard to believe in this day and age). Technorati Tags: Art, Cartoons, Disney

Jeff Smith Interview
2007-10-15 02:17:00
Here’s an interview with Bone creator, Jeff Smith , that I found interesting. He talks about current and future projects, and comments on Manga, which he describes as “…just not that good…I just think they’re kind of corny and cookie-cutter, but the ones that aren’t are transcendent, and as good as anything.” Smith also has a blog over at Boneville, that I recommend taking a look at. Color Blindness Software
2007-10-14 01:19:00
Here are two pieces of software that sound interesting. Color Oracleand Sim Daltonism supposedly let you see the computer screen the way a color blind person sees it. Now, I haven’t tried them out myself. This is because I’m red/green color blind myself, so there’s not much point… But I’d be interested to know what others think! Technorati Tags: Software

Bill Watterson Reviews Schulz Biography

I recently montioned the reactions from Charles Schulz’s family about the new biography, Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography by David Michaelis. In today’s Wall Street Journal, there is a review of the book, written by none other than Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson. Also in the Wall Street Jounal is an excerpt from the book. Pixel Art– Penguin Sprite
2007-10-11 03:59:00
Man, I love good pixel art! There’s an example at this link. It brings me back to the good old days of computer gaming when we were spending days (and nights) navigating our way through such titles as Monkey Island, King’s Quest, Day of the Tentacle and Leisure Suit Larry. Someday, I’m going to learn how to make decent pixel art myself. I went through a phase a few months ago when I tried my hand at it, but the penguin sprite on the left is pretty much as far as I got. I used a great little piece of free software called Pixen, adding all the pixels one by one on top of a scanned pencil sketch I’d done on paper. Caricaturist Joe Bluhm’s Video Tutorials
2007-10-10 01:14:00
I have such a huge amount of respect for great caricaturists. This is because I know how amazingly difficult drawing a caricature is. I’ve tried it… It’s not just capturing likenesses, which is difficult enough in itself, it’s showing the personality and the individuality of the subjects. Joe Bluhm does great caricatures, but what’s really nice, is that he’s decided to share his work process at his blog through some excellent video tutorials. Joe works digitally, using a Wacom tablet and Adobe Photoshop. I always enjoy seeing how other artists work, and these videos are particularly good and show great skill and insight into the creative process.
