Espen’s Comic Strip Debut

A few weeks ago, my son, Espen, got his debut as a cartoonist as his version of my comic strip, “Panda Rolfsen”, was printed in the newspaper, Aftenposten in Norway. Here’s the translation: -Panel 1 caption: “While the cartoonist is on vacation, his three year-old son takes over…” -Panel 4 caption: “Uh, the vacation is hereby over…” -Panel 4 balloon: “I didn’t notice much of a difference.” Espen was very excited, and somewhat surprised to see his drawings in print. Character Sketch

This is another sketch from the children’s book/graphic novel for kids that I’m currently working on. Especially the look of the boy has changed quite a bit since I did this one, though. One of my favorite parts of the process is creating and designing the characters and coming up with what they should look like for the story. Click the image for a larger version. Californication

This is sort of off-topic here, but the new show, Calif ornication , on Showtime is definitely worth a mention. David Duchovny was excellent in the X-Files (one of my all time favorite shows), but as Hank Moody, a troubled writer, he takes it to a whole new level. Duchovny’s dry wit and subtle acting rolls out the laughs faster than in any comedy I’ve seen since… oh, maybe the original “The Office”. Bus Stop Cartoonist

Comic Writing Resources

This is a follow-up of sorts to this post from a few days ago, where I expressed some frustration about the lack of attention paid in schools and elsewhere to the writing part of comics and graphic novels. Writer, Caleb Monroe, has compiled an excellent list of resources for writing comics, including such things as interviews with other writers, how-to articles and sample scripts, to mention only a few.
