Karl Pilkington Caricature Drawing
2008-07-10 17:30:00
I’ve always struggled with drawing caricatures, but after re-listening to a lot of the Ricky Gervais podcasts featuring Steve Merchant and the incredible Karl Pilkington , I decided to try drawing the round-headed monkey man. Corel Painter Splash Screen Illustration
2008-05-20 14:03:00
Corel Painter is my go-to program and has been for years now. Along with my trusted Wacom Cintiq 21UX, it’s wha I work with every day. Above is a screen shot of their splash screen. There are illustrations that rotate through when people open the application and sometimes my own illustration “Gesundheit” pops up. If I don’t feel great about my work somedays (which happens a lot it seems), it’s nice to see one of my illustrations like that inside my favorite piece of software. Simpsons Character Self Portrait
2008-04-23 17:06:00
Let’s face it, most of us will never make it onto The Simpsons as a character on the actual show, so we might have to take matters into our own hands… I created a quick self portrait this morning of what I, myself, might look like as a Simpson character. Digital Inking Movie Tutorial
2008-03-24 15:07:00
Sometime ago I downloaded a bundle of software from, which included a neat little app called Snapz Pro X. With that I can video-capture my screen while I draw, so I decided to give that a go. This is a little sketch that I penciled, lettered and inked digitally in Corel Painter X on my Wacom Cintiq 21UX. Very simple, but it shows the process. “The Pearce Sisters” by Aardman Animation
2008-02-18 17:54:00
Aardman Animation is perhaps best know for its brilliant Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit movies, but here’s a little nugget that’s just as amazing, but very, very different. The Pearce Sisters short film, with its mix of 2D and 3D animation, is perhaps somewhat disturbing, but also stunning both in story, visuals and sound. It should be noted that the movie is not suitable to children. Technorati Tags: Animation, Cartoons, Movies, Short Film

Fired Over “Dilbert” Comic Strip
2007-12-20 04:00:00
A Fort Madison man who posted a “Dilbert ” comic strip on an office bulletin board has lost his job for implying his bosses were a bunch of “drunken lemurs.” Scott Adams, “Dilbert” creator, responds: “Most ‘Dilbert’ comics don’t come right out and call management a bunch of drunken lemurs,” Adams said. “So I can see how this one might have been a tad over the line.” Read the full article from the Des Moines Register. Anatomy of a Panel
2007-12-11 04:39:00
This is my work process, shown with a panel from the graphic novel I’m working on. It shows the sketch, the lettering and then how I start coloring by adding a gray tone over everything, before blocking in the colors and then, in the last two panels, I show how I add light and texture to finish it off. It’s all done in Corel Painter using a Wacom Cintiq 21UX graphics tablet (as usual). Watercolor Sketches
2007-12-09 00:02:00
I’m going through a bit of an artistic identity crisis at the moment, so I decided to try something new, for a change. I do most of my work digitally these days, although I do a lot of sketch work on paper. Today, I pulled out the old Windsor & Newton watercolor paints, my Arches watercolor paper and my RaphaĆ«l Series 8404 (no. 2) watercolor brush. And I did the two sketches you see above. However, they look a lot better on paper than they do scanned into my computer, let me just say that. I’ve never really used watercolors, since I’ve mostly enjoyed working with acrylics in the past. So this was a bit new for me. The one on the left was done first before I figured out that, unlike with inking, I needed to do the outlines last. So for the second sketch, I painted in light colors first (this is also opposite of how I would use acrylics, where I always paint from dark to light), then added the outlines before I went back and darkened some of the shadow areas on ...

Sketch Cartoon - “The Chase”
2007-12-06 03:32:00
I have no idea who these cartoon people are or where they came from, they just sort of appeared in my sketch book this evening… As usual, the sketch is done using the Faber-Castell PITT brush pen and just inked straight with no pencil drawing underneath.
