Hey Look! A Logo!
2008-04-27 20:10:00
This logo is for a small business where you can buy toys made in the U.S.A.. I just finished it up late last week. The owner of Down To Earth Toys is having a website overhaul very soon and I can't wait to see how everything comes together. I love being a part of redesigns. Okay, any kind of design. I had to take some time away for that Mom gig I've got going on, but I'm back now. Still the Mama, but with more opportunity to work on art.  Yay!I am starting to work on a few new pieces and will stop taking lame and unannounced time off from blogging and adding new things to my shop.

The Theater That Matt Built
2008-04-07 16:12:00
Instead of drawing or painting, my husband does the equivalent of the full room art installation. His theater construction project is a current featured article on Electronic House. I even get a mention for the velour curtains I made to hang in there. As much as I want to say I'll never do that again, I know there will be another theater in the future that will need custom curtains.Maybe I'll make those outside. I'm seeing from this post that I clearly need to rethink my blog entry categories. "Stuff Without a Category" is hardly dignified. Plus, I realize that "Current Projects" don't stay current and that really poses a problem. I'll work on that.

Squirrel
2008-04-01 16:31:00
It was about time for more wildlife. Nothing says "nature" like a yellow squirrel with no visible mouth.:)The original is 7x9 illustration board with acrylic paint and ink. I just listed this print last night in my Etsy Shop. Speaking of Etsy, I received a message there last night from another blogger who mentioned my Lawn Mower Print in her entry. Her little girl is the cutest. Read it at Christopher and Tia. I'm still in my pajamas and need to get to the post office. I'm out.

T.V. Free
2008-03-29 21:55:00
The cable guy just left 5 minutes ago and already I am having withdrawls from HGTV. We decided it was better to just get rid of the t.v. because regulating it wasn't working. We were watching way too many mornings chuck full of Disney Channel. Gross. We will now be reading more books and making more art. Perhaps we will even venture outside now and again.

Natural Cleaners
2008-03-27 15:02:00
I was always a big fan of using cleaners full of chemicals that smelled like pine forests. I just felt better knowing I killed all the germs, plus my house smelled like one of those trees you can hang in your car.Over the past several years, I have kicked around the idea of using natural cleaners, but it seemed like something I wouldn't want to deal with. Frankly, I had visions of scrub brushes and massive amounts of elbow grease. It occurred to me one day as I was spraying my mirror with glass cleaner (uh, hello it's AMMONIA sprayed into tiny droplets small enough to inhale) that there must be a healthier way to go about this. I looked into making my own cleaners. Then, I actually followed through and made them.I heart them.A lot. For glass cleaner, I just washed out the old bottle and filled it with about 1/2 cup vinegar and the rest I filled with water. Then I added a teaspoon of natural soap and about 10 drops of lavender essential oil. It totally works. You can also use 1:1 vin...

Changed My Mind
2008-03-15 20:55:00
These new prints have really grown on me and I decided to list them in my shop. Intially, I was concerned about the fact that they look a little different from my other work due to the buttons. Now? Not so much. Different is good. I found that I have so many ideas for this series that I simply cannot ignore it. I love it when that happens. This one is titled "Tree and Underwear" and the original is acrylic and ink and buttons on Ampersand Hardbord (yes, that is how they spell hardbord). Just like stick-legged creatures, I have also had a thing for underwear in my art since college. This is completely tame compared to some of the things I subjected my classmates to. Thankfully.

Dreaming of Trees
2008-03-07 22:56:00
Two of my button pieces are finished so far. I'm calling the series "Dreaming of Trees ". It is a HUGE departure from where I started (that project is unfinished and hanging on the wall beside me right now). I like the results, but I'm not so sure about selling them as prints. The buttons create a space between the art and the scanner glass and it's really bothering me at the moment. I'm not sure I want that look. I definitely plan to continue on with the series. Even if I don't make prints, I can put the originals up for sale. This one is tenatively titled "Tree and Zebra" and the original measures about 12x12 inches. I painted over a piece that I did my junior year of college (another long-legged chicken I'm afraid). It's a little bit sloppier and more immediate than my other work, but I like it that way. Laundry time.
Things That Fly
2008-03-01 02:46:00
Martha Stewart did a whole segment on Etsy today. Pretty sweet. I hope it brings a ton of traffic to us indie types. These two (cleverly titled "Airplane" and "Rocket") are now up for sale in my Etsy shop. My husband is a pilot and space fanatic, so I had to include some airborne vehicles in my growing collection. They are both 7x9 inches, acrylic and ink on illustration board. I have finally gained some ground on my mysterious button project (see a few posts below). I completely ditched the first idea and have been working on my second plan. My first one or two pieces should be done very soon. You'll be among the first to know. Promise.

Lawn Mower
2008-02-28 18:26:00
More new work is finding it's way into my Etsy shop. I have two more in the wings, but one needs to be scanned again because I failed to notice a few unfinished bits and the other needs to be cleaned up by my helper...er husband. This one is 9x7 inches on illustration board. I was told it should be a red mower, but I tried red and it was not good. Orange matches the other colors much better. Sometimes matching is smart.

My new project is sitting in the corner of the kitchen mocking me. I'll get back to it soon. Right now, I need to brainstorm and I'm not really into it. Instead, I'm working on a bunch of new stuff for my Etsy shop. This time, I'm doing a few pieces that don't automatically make people think of nurseries. I like doing whimsical art, but I need to be careful not to get pigeonholed into a place I cannot ever escape. Adults need whimsy, too. P.S. I nearly forgot to tell you about a wonderful shop review that was posted on ocityishness! Super fantastic!

Rescuing Art
2008-02-13 16:46:00
I don't mean "rescue" in the literal sense, like running out of a burning building with a priceless painting or moving a sculpture out of the path of a hurricane (although both sound noble). I'm talking about a botched vision. Sometimes, I get the idea that I will create the most perfect art ever created (by me, of course) and completely fall short. It can end up being the lamest art ever created (by me, of course) in a blink.Often, it does. Ironically, it's the work that I'm not terribly fond of in the beginning that my husband convinces me will sell like hotcakes. He has never been wrong. My most recent endeavor (the aforementioned "button project") has been taking over our kitchen island for several days now. Perhaps it's the pressure to hurry so that I can bring our kitchen back from the art studio it has become, or maybe it's lack of planning, but *wow* it's bad.I need to figure out a way to rescue it properly. I say "properly" because I have already made multiple atte...
Who's Got the Button?
2008-02-11 04:17:00
This morning I had a dream about an entirely new series of work. I was able to study and remember all of the elements of a beautiful painting and I wrote everything down when I woke up. The dream was only one painting, but the potential for a HUGE body of work is there and I have already gotten started. I am really excited about it! We drove all over doing errands today and I picked up more supplies. More paint, more gel medium, more canvases, and more buttons.

2008-02-03 03:15:00
I have decided that it's safe to show you what I've been working on since it was just shipped out this afternoon. I made them for the room of a one year old little girl. These two are 11x14 Deep Cradled Ampersand Hardbord with acrylic and ink (the usual). I'd just write "the usual", but it would confuse someone just dropping in for the first time. Not very nice of me.

Pretty Colors
2008-01-29 19:23:00
I love color and I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting combinations. Sometimes I swipe them from magazine ads and other times, it's more mundane. Perhaps a smashed blueberry next to a half eaten cracker on the hardwood floor will do the trick. It's hard to say. If I am really stuck, I can take two routes. Often, the impulsive side of me will just keep mixing random colors and adding them until I have clown vomit instead of art. Those pieces are sometimes fixable, but mostly end up in the trash. Trying to "fix" art can be crazymaking and I have too many other things to do. The most wise (and least wasteful) course of action is to use a color fan (or color deck) to choose colors if I don't already have a photo or fabric to draw from. They are sold anywhere you buy house paint and are really useful if you plan to choose wall colors as well (in that case, I recommend getting the color fan of a GOOD paint brand). Okay, time for me to sweep the floor and mop up the blue...

More Originals
2008-01-22 19:20:00
A new post AND pictures. Fancy blogging, huh? Ha ha! I'm starting to list my originals so I don't end up with a giant stack of them. I decided to sell them alone without mounting or framing. This one is called "Elephant" and is acrylic and ink on illustration board 6x10 inches. Check out my Etsy shop for more info. In other news, my beloved XBox 360 is back! W00t.

Divine Intervention
2008-01-08 21:24:00
My Mom got us a gift certificate to Game Stop for the holidays. Yay Mom! Thanks! We picked up 3 games with it. My new game is Bioshock. It's amazing. Breathtaking. Especially on our 8 foot screen. It's also very very violent and full of bad words. Not appropriate for children at all. As a result, I've been staying up very late all by myself gaming my thumbs off while everyone else sleeps. Meanwhile, the laundry is piling up and my new work space is mostly empty. As fate would have it, we've been having issues with our beloved XBOX 360. Today, it's being shipped back to Microsoft for repair. No more late nights shooting crazed underwater city dwellers. Back to getting this house pulled together and filling up my shop.

So Far, So Good
2008-01-03 16:05:00
I haven't purchased a single thing since Monday. Of course, I haven't left the house because it's been cold enough to freeze my eyes open by simply stepping outdoors. Perhaps tomorrow I will cave. It's been awhile since we've had Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in the house.

Saving Money
2008-01-02 19:50:00
Chris over at Notes From the Trenches says that her family is taking the year off of spending money. Not entirely, but in an effort to curb mindless spending. She pointed out that they are still planning on buying necessities like toilet paper (and I assume that includes chocolate). Since my job is selling artwork, I will have to include art as a necessity as well. Preventing conflicts of interest is paramount in this household. I think her idea is brilliant, really. Part of our plan for the new year is getting rid of the clutter. It's going to be a huge effort, but it really needs to be done. We keep hauling around items that never see the light of day and it's really pathetic. I'm currently not hardcore enough to declare a year of no spending. Maybe next year when I am getting more sleep and don't feel the need to order takeout on a regular basis. This year, I plan to be a more thoughtful spender. If I know that I cannot live without whatever it is, I'll totally buy it. Othe...

Happy New Year!
2008-01-01 12:14:00
I really need to make a resolution to write in my blog more than once a week. LOL. We don't actually stay awake to watch the ball drop these days. I'd much rather get to bed early and get some sleep. Some might argue that makes me boring, but I call it *wise*. There is a small person who likes to wake up at the butt crack of dawn. Hours before the sun appears. Groan.

Silly Things...
2007-12-19 02:54:00
Some women were discussing silly things that they spent most of their life believing until recently and it really got me thinking. One of them even said that she believed that we lived inside a Dyson Sphere until the age of 7. Amazing! Plus, I now know what a Dyson Sphere is. Woohoo! The only silly thing I could think of was that I spent my life until my early twenties believing that we only live one lifetime. Talk about mind blowing. LOL.

Puff and Bees
2007-12-17 22:02:00
I just added another piece to my Etsy shop today. Bees in a puff storm. I'm calling it "Puff and Bees". It's the usual 8x10. The original is acrylic and ink on Ampersand Hardbord.
Why I Will No Longer Ship With FedEx
2007-11-24 22:32:00
We once had a really great FedEx guy that knew how to read the numbers off the box and match them to the house they needed to be delivered to (and, really, that cannot be too hard unless you're wasted). Many of our packages were delivered early and with a smile. Then, one day the "holiday season" drivers arrived and everything went into the crapper. Last week we were awaiting the arrival of a new carseat. It never showed up. My tracking number webpage claimed it had been delivered and left at the front door. The giant hole in this fabrication was the fact that I was sitting (literally) five feet from said front door watching t.v. at the time the driver claimed to have dropped it off. I then had to keep calling the carseat people repeatedly to get them to send me a second seat. You know, in case I was trying to score another one for free. Fast forward to this morning (and nearly two weeks without the needed carseat), our new tracking number said our package was arriving...

Gone Veggie
2007-11-19 20:12:00
This time last year, we were eating macrobiotic and it was tough. Needless to say, when Turkey Day rolled around, I made a bird and all the fixings and we trashed that way of eating quickly. We also didn't feel very well the next day (food hangover methinks). This year, no turkey. I'm not really keen on celebrating Thanksgiving in the traditional American sense after learning the true history of the holiday. The way we treated and still treat Native Americans is awful. Back to the veggie thing. I was at the bookstore last week with my good friend and I saw the book Skinny Bitch. I laughed until I cried while reading that evening. If you are averse to four letter words, I recommend skipping this one and reading something else about eating a vegan diet. I have done a lot of research on nutrition and eating over the past year and this book sealed the deal. For now, I'll have to say we are vegetarian because there is a tiny bit of cheese left in the fridge and the two remaining Boca...
Proof I Am Not (Completely) Lazy
2007-11-15 18:12:00
For the past two mornings, I have woken up just after 5 a.m. to go to the gym and run like a hampster on a wheel for 20-30 minutes for my OWN GOOD. Honestly? It's not too bad. I actually feel pretty good (except my wrists, so I'm not typing much more). I've thus far stuck to the eliptical machines and I have no idea what I will do tomorrow. I have visions of swimming. We'll see. I found it mildly humorous (mind you, it was EARLY in the morning) that everyone in the room was running or speed walking as fast and hard as possible, yet we all hadn't moved an inch. I even watched as one woman was running on a treadmill and a man walked up next to her and stood chatting with her while she worked. They were both locked in the same place despite the fact that one was running. I bet that's a metaphor for something.

I'm Alive
2007-11-13 03:03:00
Repetive stress injuries are not a good time (in case anyone was wondering). I'm finding that I'm not able to be a mommy, run a household and a business without some outside help. I really thought that as long as I wore my cape and tights I could do it all, but I was mistaken. You won't be able to tell, but I plan to have my husband type up my blog posts for me while I dictate (at least for a time). I hope that's not considered cheating. I will give him my cape to wear as he plucks away at the keys.

Heeeeeere Fishy Fishy Fishy...
2007-11-06 17:09:00
I can't stop thinking of that old Sesame Street clip with Burt and Ernie. Not that this fish is leaping. Well, maybe it is. Perhaps the blue is sky and there is someone blowing bubbles while the goldfish sails calmly though the air. This is another piece I did on Ampersand Deep Cradled Hardbord. It's an 8x10. I also made a 5x7 and both are available in my shop. I still haven't decided what project to do next and I have added the idea of making a painting for our home. I'm one of those artists who has pretty bare walls. Sad, really. LOL. Whatever I decide, it cannot be typing because I'm supposed to be resting. Speaking of, bye! :)

2007-11-02 18:26:00
My poor little yellow blog needs some new posts. I'm also thinking it needs some sans serif type, but I'll get to that later. Done, but I still don't like it. I think I need to go back to the design board. I've been trying to keep my computer time to a minimum due to a repetative stress injury. My darling husband has been doing a ton of work for me to help out. Of course, in the spirit of rest and relaxation,  I went and listed 15 new 5x7 prints in my Etsy shop. Now my arms are half numb. Awesome. My post is titled "decisions" because I'm starting to feel the need to finish crocheting a ripple blanket I started last winter (back when they were HOT). Right now, it's more like a ripple scarf.  I also really miss my Oblivion game and might need to take some time to kill some ogres and steal some gold. My final activity on the list is to *really* finish that quilt I thought I was done with. According to my mother (a veteran quilter), I need to quilt it prope...
