[design] Resume Before/Resume After
2007-12-14 06:28:00 1186. I finally got the chance to deliver a certain dear effort I'd done for someone. Ed is a good friend that we've go way back with and lives in Salem, so we don't see him and his family all the time, but we do keep up as we can. One of his boys, a really winsome fellow named Nathan, is passionate about acting, and he's played a few roles. He's just getting started in his career. Some time ago, Ed handed me a copy of Nathan's resume. He admits he's no designer, and I saw a chance to improve something, so I did. Tonight I finally got the chance to deliver the results of what I did. here's approximately what it looked like before (apologies to dialup customers–they're a little big):To Ed's credit, he used MS Excel to lay out the resume. That's someone I'd not of thought of.And here's what it looked like after I got through with it:Quite the difference. I know nothing of the acting world, but it seems to me that a resume for an actor ought to communicate in terms of a ... More About: Design , Resume
[design, logo_design] Tips From An Obvious Master
2007-12-13 17:23:00 1185. From Inside / Outside: From the Basics to the Practice of Design , Second Edition, by Malcolm Grear: (a logo is) a simple tool, like a hammer; it has a straightforward function. Anything that gets in the way of that function weakens the effectiveness of the tool. Keep it simple. Same for symbols. Simplicity, clarity, elegance. And by elegance I mean the sort of form that a wide diversity of viewers will find visually active and easily remembered. Being memorable matters a lot. If the form is ornate, it can't stick in memory. Simple and ugly is easy; simple and boring is easy; simple and vague is also easy. That's one reason I aspire to logo design. [pdx] Not That I Can Afford Any Events There, But It Still Sucks
2007-12-13 16:57:00 1184. Vulcan is selling the naming rights to the Rose Garden Arena. Yay, us! Brent Hunsberger, in todays Big O, says all that needs to be said about it:That means the Blazers could play their home games in an arena named as blandly as Key Arena in Seattle or as omnipresent as Oracle Arena in Oakland, home to the Golden State Warriors. Or EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, named after a company that disposes of nuclear wasteIt frequently irritates me that Rose Garden events are typically priced out of my range, even the ones I'd actually want to go to; at least I liked the design of the building and the fact that I could go past it without cringing. This might sound funny from someone who fancies themselves a graphic designer, but it gets tiresome living in a world where there is no such thing as something that can't be used for advertising. And so it goes, I suppose.Technorati Tags: pdx Rose Garden Naming Rights More About: Events , Sucks

2007-12-13 14:52:00 1183. We dive back into the 2-13 world of the VHF dial; we have weather and traffic, on the 6's.KAUZ, Channel 6, Wichita Falls TX, has a free and fun 6 that has a kind of cool unexpected shadow under the ascender:Also, the CBS eye is in an interesting and unexpected place. Texoma, for what it's worth, is the name for the community around the Texas-Oklahoma border centering on Wichita Falls and named in the inimitable portmanteauish way those in the south-central part of the US seem to like naming some of their regional area regions.KBBL TV and radio broadcasts to the town of Springfield. We weren't able to find the logo, but here's what their radio transmission tower looks like:KCEN, channel 6 Waco TX, does a pretty creative trick with the 6 that makes it look like a Möbius strip being constructied. [design] Funky Neighborhood Maps, IP, and Helping Oneself To Others' Ideas
2007-12-13 14:31:00 1182. A little experiment last night reminded me (of course) about thoroughly checking out something before going through with it-at the very least, making sure that I've read every link. In my defense, I'll say that the blog that I found it on has a slightly different format, but that makes it a learning experience. In my TV Logo Library exploration (which I've given the continuing title Channel Surfing to) I noticed I got a link from the esteemable Brittney Gilbert (she of http://brittneygilbert.com), a very fascinating person. My Channel 5's entry was linked from a class on her blog called "itty bitty"; in a sidebar I noticed a link to a cool neighborhood map. Clicking on it, I was taken directly to a quite cool neighborhood map of San Francisco, which was only neighborhood boundary lines with DIN Engschrift type filling the 'hoods in completely adventurous ways (view that map here). Now, I thought Hey, that's cool; wonder what it would look like if I did such a thing, then ... [media] Channel Surfing: That Was the WEWS That Was
2007-12-11 15:42:00 1181. WEWS is on of the old-line stations in Cleveland–it's been around forever, like the old guard hereabouts. And like local stations here, they have to market. In the 70's, for example, they wanted you to tune into Eyewitness news and Catch 5...(thanks to Kevin Allman for the tip). This is such an amazing period piece–even though a lot of us lived through those times, I'm sure you can agree with me that we can't believe that that stuff was ever fashionable. Kevin describes it as a combination of The Electric Company and Peter Max and I can't think of a better way to describe it. I do, however, have a compulsion to seek out episodes of Mary Tyler Moore now. They sure knew how to have fun at WEWS. In this clip, the weatherman (with the obvious complicity of the control room staff) make fun of the sports anchor's hair:And in this one, legendary Cleveland broadcaster Dorothy Fuldheim isn't sure what she is, but she's certain it isn't bisexual:Occasionally bloopers happene... 2007-12-10 19:21:00 1180. Inexorable in our progress, we march up the VHF dial.Watch out, Channel 5's, its your turn now, whether you want it or not! Let's go...Our first stop is KALB Channel 5, Alexandria LA, right smack in the center of the state.Big, wide-bodied 5, slickly silver, with an arc suggesting a supporting disc. What's notable here is that while KALB is considered the NBC affiliate for that market, it carries CBS on a digital subchannel, thus the double-network marks.I'm quite frankly starting to flinch every time I'm seeing the words NewsChannel, News Channel, or any combination (camel capped or no). But you can't fight fashion, it's said. True that is. Further into the wilds with gun and camera, then:KCTV Channel 5, Kansas City–aptly chosen call, jauntily obliqued (but still-ready-for-action) 5, and the clever move of coloring the background along the lines of the character. 2007-12-07 19:42:00 1179. From The ZehnKatzen Notebook s–TV Station Call Signs, or the letters we call our TV stations. We know that all the broadcast stations in Oregon begin with K; in fact, it's a truism that broadcasters west of the Mississippi start with K whilst those east start with W; and some stations have three-letter calls (KEX, KGW, KXL) though others four (KOIN, KATU, KPOJ). Strangely, however, there's a KDKA in Pittsburgh-hundreds of miles west of the Mississippi. Ever wonder why? I did, found out, filed away the info, and then forgot it. Now, in collecting TV Station logos, I found I wanted to know again and now, thanks to Google, the answers are but a few minutes away, perforce, the following, capped with a few words on corporate style (the CBS Mandate). The following is a thumbnail of what I found out. A web-bibliography follows. The Story of the Ks and the Ws A long time ago there were only a handful of stations broacast... [logo_design] KVDO TV-3 Logo, More Finished Version
2007-12-07 03:34:00 1177. Another despatch from Electric Logo land. This is a polishing of the KVDO logo we just presented:We've cleaned up the typography quite a bit here, and extended the type treatment into the station's call-sign. The call-letters align with the letterforms TV, leading the eye across and through. The 3 calls attention to itself through sheer size, leading the eye to the type, where we naturally reset to the left end of that string, reading back rightward to encode the information. The majuscule T and V letterforms formed the basis for almost all the rest of the type; the D was created from the stem stroke of the T and a clipped O, which was simply composed of two ellipses. The stem was again borrowed as the basis of the K, and the hairline and leg strokes for the K were kept simple so it could all be augured in by sight. To cap off this trip down Oregon broadcast memory lane, the studio building for KVDO still stands, only, of course, it hasn't been used as a TV studio since the da... 2007-12-06 14:11:00 1176. From our headquarters in Electric Logoland, another ZehnKatzen Labs production:Salem's own Channel 3, KVDO TV. KVDO (the VDO meant video, and some locals called it K-Video for a short while) signed on in February 1970 to big capitial city press. It was an independent station that tried to mount its own news operation, and it was a moderate hit in Salem, but no matter how popular such a station is, it always had to operate in the shadow of the Portland stations–a competition which, by 1976, proved too stiff. Independent Channel 3 signed off an became a star in the OPB constellation. In 1976, after KVDO was acquired by OPB and began simulcasting PBS programs, Channel 3 went dark from February to September of that year, when an upset local Salem viewer decided to protest the sale to OPB by cutting down the transmission tower. Eventually the station was moved to Bend, which had no OPB coverage, signing on in 1983 as KOAB-TV.This version of the logo is about 90% faithful to the o...

[sign_design] A Rough Proposal for a Metropolitan Portland Route Sign
2007-12-04 16:15:00 1172.A rather rough rough. The rose represents on behalf of the Rose City, of course, and was clipped from a lower-res photograph I have here strictly for visualization purposes. The rose graphic might not be completely acceptable for a metropolitan route network–after all, Portland isn't the whole of the Metro area, and other Metro area towns that are not Portland can be somewhat resentful of a Rose-City-centric symbol for a badged route running through thier neighborhoods. But this gets the general gist of the idea across. The pentagonal shield is, of course, the commonly-used county route cutout, and the idea of personalizing the shield with a commonly-recognizable symbol rather than words (such as METRO ROUTE) was inspired by the way Charlotte NC adorns the Charlotte Route 4 sign with the crown from the city's logo. 2007-11-30 20:28:00 1164. If you've been looking up and forward whilst waiting at any light in the Portland corporate area latterly, you'll have seen a sign bound to the overhead like this:The City is, at last, addressing a real need in road signage. Most other larger towns up and down the valley (and across the Columbia too) have large signs denoting the street name on the traffic signal arm. Any driver who's been saved from having to frantically scan about on the corners to see what street they're crossing don't need to be told how good this is. The standard has seemed to have been set; the iconic representation of the "Portland Rose", the red rose with three green leaves, and a simple representation of the street name at cross. The notation on this particular sign deserves some explanation. For the past several months, a major realignment of the connection between Killingsworth Street and Columbia Boulevard has been becoming reality. The old Columbia Boulevard opening, a two-lane ... 2007-11-30 19:36:00 1163. TriMet TV episode 7 is out, and it's a ride on the #20-Burnside/Stark line. This episode is in the travelogue mode. The #20 line runs from Beaverton Tran sit Center, via Cedar Hills Blvd, Sunset TC and Barnes Rd, then down Burnside from the crest of the hill all the way out to Gateway TC, then out Burnside to Gresham. [sign_design, info_design] County Highways in Oregon
2007-11-30 04:39:00 1162. One thing not seen often in Oregon are signed county routes. I think this is unfortunate, because having county route numbers are a really nifty way of instilling terrior, a sense of place, and saying "follow Country Route 3" dispenses with all sorts of "go left here ... or was that right ...no, wait, start over" monologue that even I (and you can't get me lost very easily anyhwere in the Valley north of Corvallis) tend to get into (the brain is a funny thing). There is one county in Oregon that implements a badged county road network, and that county is Douglas. It's a little hard to find maps with the route numbers on online–I do have a map of them, but that's off the official Douglas County map of 1990, an illustration of which is at left (click the map to embiggen). The county road shield is a standard one: gold FHWA-style type on blue field, an irregular pentagon taller than wide, with mitred corners on the bottom two points and rounded corners on the top three. 2007-11-29 20:30:00 1161. Posting about Salem street blades got me reminiscing about growing up in Salem, and I remember seeing some of the evolutions of that form. The following comes from memory ...When my fam moved into town, the street blades (inside town, anyway-the Marion County blades were wooden, and standard off-white on green) weren't green-on-white, as detailed two entries back, but rather looked like this:That's m4d Photoshop skillz, yo. The letterforms were slightly different too, but the current editions are close enough that this looks very close to the way they used to be. But this was just an intermediate step in their evolution. Perhaps influenced by styles seen elsewhere, the name blade used to be slenderer–with only room for one line of type, the street name; the block index went on a tab that was riveted to the main blade:I believe this style was current in Salem through the late sixties and was supplanted by the other style as signs needed replacing. [info_design, street_blades] A Tour Of Salem and Keizer's Street Blades
2007-11-29 10:04:00 1158. Latterly, as detailed before in this consciousness stream, we visited Salem to see Fam and overeat generally. Missions both accomplished. But what Yours Truly had in mind was to snap some images of something we don't see often: Salem and Keizer street blades. Lets just cut to the chase, then. The first of the two cities one comes to is, of course, Keizer. Formed in 1982, mostly to keep Salem out, Keizer is one of the two areas where Salem ever got any sprawl on before urban growth boundaries sprang up around Oregon cities back in the day. Here's a typical set of blades in a typical Keizer neighborhood. 14th Avenue NE is notable because it is to greater Salem what Peacock Lane is to Portland–it's the street where all the neighbors go all out every holiday season in a Christmas decoration extravaganza: The block number indexes are notable here. 2007-11-29 08:16:00 1157. Ever since Stephen Colbert declared Oregon "Idaho 's Portugal", I've had a bit of trouble wrestling with this metaphor. Oregonlive.com has seen fit to lift this geographic slight (and get a few hits of Colbert's name, but hey–so am I) with the ad clipped at right (h/t Nonprofit Girl). My point is, if Oregon is Idaho's Portugal, then Idaho should be Oregon's Spain (Calfornia and Washington are Oregon's USA, if you apply the Colbertian metaphor the other way). But Idaho is a poor stand-in as anyone's Spain. I mean, can you picture someone in Eagle going down into Boise for tapas? More articles from this author:2007-11-27 12:51:00 1154. The history of Portland television is, in a way, the history of Channel 12, KPTV. It's also kind of a history of styles and fashion, which is truthfully the way I relate to it on a gut-response level. The current logo portrays the KPTV-that-is-now; Portland's FOX affiliate–slick, mature, serious. It was a long growing-up. History will recall that Portland's own KPTV was the first TV station in Portland, and may well be the first commercial UHF TV station in the world (the award for first UHF station proper going to a Bridgeport, CN trasmitter (KC2XAK) that was an experimental effort). Ironically, the first owners of KPTV–Empire Coil–bought the transmission equipment for KC2XAK, shipped it cross country, and assembled it on Council Crest ... as KPTV's first transmitter. It signed on as KPTV-Channel 27 in September of 1952 carrying all four then-major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and DuMont), and, as commercial television exploded in Stumptown from 1952 th...
