A Perfect Day
2007-11-18 01:03:00
My daughter and I were recently in Lake Arrowhead visiting a wildlife rehab. station. The ride up the mountain was harrowing — she doesn’t like mountain driving. What made up for that was this mule deer, so tame it captivated Jordan. Her joy made this one of those cherished parenting moments.

Madcap Crush

While the writers are on strike, I’ve been watching the excellent BBC program Extras with Ricky Gervais. I found it on Netflix. Extras is just as good as his original The Office (I’m so disappointed in this season of the US Office, aren’t you?). The way guest stars like Bowie and Kate Winslet murdilate his self esteem is a riot! Now I’m swooning over this funny guy. The way to my heart is through my belly laughs…

Deal Breaker?
2007-11-15 08:45:00
I polled some friends to see if any of them committed these crimes against peace: 1. Do you set your clocks a half hour ahead to fool yourself into being on time? 2. Do you set the morning alarm for an hour before you get up so you can hit the snooze button every 10 minutes? 3. When you finally turn the alarm off after 45 minutes of snooze button hitting, do you then roll over on your back and snore at 150 decibels? Of 5 couples polled, 2 people tried this “trick” to help them awaken. One friend doesn’t have the solution to stop it, another used logic and convinced the offending party to stop. Here’s my approach — blabbing it on this blog to the masses. On a related note, the not-mentioned offender downloaded many many Led Zeppelin songs, just released on iTunes in a successful bid to distract the crabby girl that needs at least 8 hours of sleep. But this drawring was taken from life. Four pho-ing, o’clock. Check the news tomorrow for a crime of p...

Sometimes, I Like Yellow
2007-11-14 07:26:00
This roadstand near my house sells mostly honey and horseradish. I made a killer roast on Sunday so I made a trip there. I’m intrigued by the many yellow buildings near where I live so this is titled Yello w 1. Really, a certain yellow is my favorite color. As in, yellow ware bowls! And yellow ochre paint. This here’s my official proclamation of my yellow passion!

Spam + Art = Spart!
2007-11-13 07:30:00
I recently received this piece of spam. Somehow, I don’t think the thing it’s selling is a balloon woman. But let me tell you folks, I’m not in the market for what they ARE selling (wink!). “Any bigger and i would be in a circus” just cracks me up. Is it a compliment? Something to aspire to? I chose this one tonight because my jeans are groaning. I’ve gained 5 lbs in a month(ish). Damn it! What could it be?

Under The Last Oak
2007-11-12 08:12:00
There’s a beautiful, wide open space near our house. To the left of this tree are hundreds of new houses. This side will be developed soon. The flags and notes are there to honor local men and women fighting the war. It’s lonesome looking and timeworn. The only veteran in my family was my jolly, funny grandfather Poppy, now passed away. He fought in the Pacific but never talked about the experience. Today, I’ll be thinking of him and that war. This one just pisses me off too much to think about…

Right. Next. Door?!?
2007-11-10 08:36:00
My neighbor Diane called Friday morning to say that she and her husband scared off a cougar that had jumped into her little, fenced dog yard at about 6:15 a.m. We’ve lived in tvoc for eight years and ridden our horses in the nearby park and never heard about a cougar sighting until now. Although it’s frightening, I hope they don’t find the cat and it just goes back to the mountains. Cougars are too dangerous to relocate and those found in neighborhoods like ours are usually euthanized. I’d find that tragic. “You better keep Daisy in the house” was Diane’s warning. But she can be cagey. This might be a ruse to keep our senile lab inside all day because of her barking. Even a little white lie from her would be better than a dead catamount.

I xx00 My Diana Fayt Vase
2007-11-09 08:09:00
Won on Ebay on TUESDAY and received today! I’m thrilled to have found this vase for $20.00. I’m oh, so kookoo- crazy for her art pottery and the piece has a hint of her current work. It’s from the line of pottery made for Synergy Designs in Hungary that was discontinued in 2002. Buying one of her modern pieces is on my wish list so I’m saving up my pennies…

Cloud Sea
2007-11-09 02:21:00
The lowlands of Southern California were gloomy today as this view toward the south shows. Lake Arrowhead, however, was clear and glorious. Evidence of the past week’s fire was only evident if you looked for it. Which I didn’t…

OC Register “Dark and Moody” Style
2007-11-08 01:14:00
This is the result of my first attempt with encaustic technique. It’s a piece for the philanthropy special section of the Regis ter today. I originally flipped over encaustic when I was in NorCal. I’ve had some more wood waiting for a spare moment so I can start some personal pieces. The newspaper reproduction was PERFECT! Thanks to Rick Hearn in our excellent imaging department, our great press room and the divine Miss K(aren Kelso) who designed the page!

This Is Spart-y
2007-11-05 08:27:00
At Sketch Life once a week, I took a spam subject line I’d fished out of my spam filter to prompt an illustration. It was called Spam Sense. I’m continuing with “Spart” because I like the sassy word and a S.L. visitor wanted to try the illustration challenge. So, feel free to send a sketch or something if you’d like to and I’ll post it on Friday. As for this image for the spam line “Clique leonine Melampodium,” it’s a message to the dear friend that seems to always worry about my happiness. Never fear! Most of the time, this is how I see my life. Well, except, for being surrounded by lions, instead, good and interesting friends (tra la).
On The Ride This Morning

Like A Mad Love Affair
2007-10-31 06:42:00
I’ve canceled appointments, left deadlines unmet, kept my voice mailbox stuffed full and sort of dropped out. My friends are complaining and my kids are eating too many slapped together meals. Is it a secret boyfriend?? HA HA (that’s a joke!). No, it’s the ancient painting technique of encaustic that has me in a whirl. Layer upon layer of natural resin and beeswax, affording a look down through the piece — it’s exactly what I’ve looked for in my work for years. And what fun tools! My grandmother’s vintage blowdryer, a morter and pestal, oils and a maul stick, a blast! I’m working on an encaustic painting for a newspaper illustration but I’m afraid the nuance and technique won’t translate on newsprint and maybe not online either. The only way to appreciate encaustic in my opinion is in person. Whelp, good bye friends! So long, attention to normal life! I guess I’m going to have to start making some art…

Whew! We made it.
2007-10-30 02:53:00
Well, I mean, if you’re coming here from the Sketch Life blog, YOU made it, and after weeks of code wrangling (thanks Tyler) and angst, I made it too. This is the new blog and I’m so excited. I’ll have sketches and photos, maybe music. And movies even! Sketch life came at a pretty chaotic time for me, and I was able to get some stuff off my chest there, not to mention, learn a bit about blogging. I’ve moved on from that both spiritually and virtually to this new place. Hopefully it will be peaceful but not too boring! Thanks for visiting. Hurry ba-aack (say this like they do at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland because it’s close to Halloween?) hurry ba-ack. sketchbook
