Spring Flame
2008-04-14 04:10:00
I'm uploading this image to wish you all a happy and bright spring! We passed the most beautiful flowers hanging in window pots outside a local Long Island restaurant today, and I shot them in spite of a stiff and maddening wind. I manipulated this one in Photoshop, repeating a single blossom to make the composition. It was my first day out since last Tuesday. Seems I had a little bout of flu, and now I have to catch up on all your posts! I hope you've had a better week than I did, although all things considered, I have nothing to complain about. Happy spring!!Image c Lynda Lehmann. If you are interested in purchasing this image or any of my art, please visit Lynda Lehmann Painting and Photography. Or you can buy it framed at Imagekind.

"Ethereal " Image c Lynda LehmannPetals clasp sweet sunlit air.Roots reach deep to suckle Grace.Graceful tulip drinks her love, grateful for dear Earth's embrace.Poem c 2008 Lynda LehmannSerendipity was finding this majestic tulip in my garden, upon returning home from a walk. I ran to get my camera and caught it just a minute before shade enveloped it, swallowing all the gorgeous highlights. Only a day later, this beautiful bloom was past its glory. But what a glorious flower it was! The photo is from last year, but since we're not having much in the way of blooming here yet, except for crocuses and hyacinths, I'm posting it to celebrate spring. It's the perfect time to find renewal in both nature and in ourselves. I hope you enjoy my photo and poem and I wish you a happy, healthy, and creative spring!Text and photo c Lynda Lehmann. Light Through Time
2008-03-31 22:57:00
Time will not wait, and takes its toll. Boughs break, rivers thin and bend their banks, our faces fade and line. Seasons change with paradigms, our knowledge never sure. Yet sunlight melds through ages past while seas still lick the shore.Stories spill in textured light, paint peals past eon'sweather and woe, while we seek answersnot attained. So time's impassivemarch must go. Image and text c 2008 Lynda Lehmann. All rights reserved. Thank you, Blogging Friends, for reading my poem. Though I know little of writing poetry, I'm attempting to compose pieces that relate to my images and at the same time have some meaning. I hope they will resonate on a tiny note of truth for my readers. I welcome your feedback and discussion!

Hello blogging friends! I hope you find this video clip relaxing, in spite of the fact that I've uploaded it as a metaphor for my washed away feed! I've put out a broadcast but I'm repeating it here, in case you haven't seen it. I want to let you know that you may have to re-subscribe to Peripheral Vision. I apologize for any inconvenience. The technical stuff is not my strong point--and trust me--that's an understatement! Please let me know if you try to re-subscribe and you can't. I've lost my stats but I think I have this straightened out!Anyway, enjoy the music of the sea, and don't forget to watch the sparkles in the water! Have a great weekend, and thanks for your understanding.Movie clip c 2008 Lynda Lehmann.

For me, this painting evokes tree roots, tender shoots, moss and lichen, and all the other life forms that emerge in a welter of new growth, each spring. Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas, 24 x 30 inches. Abstract Expressionist in style and full of motion, gesture, and color. Please visit Lynda Lehmann Painting and Photography if you would like to see more of my work, including paintings, photographs of a wide variety of subject matter, and digital art. Thanks for stopping by!

Changing of the Light c 2008 Lynda LehmannThis week I've read a few blog entries that express a negative mindset brought on by the events of the week. Many of us here in the US, and especially in New York State, feel sickened by the behavior and ensuing scandal unfolding around a man we thought to have integrity. We're also worried about the price of gas, the cost of flour, unemployment, and the rupture of the economic bubble. As if that's not enough, we have antibiotics in our water at the same time that resistant strains are continuing to rear their ugly heads. We have an epidemic of STDs among teenagers, an epidemic of tornadoes and other extreme weather events made worse by Global Warming, and ongoing and pending wars around the globe. I could go on and on, and I know you could, too. Many of us are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and just plain negative. I think this is partly due to our forgetting to look at things holistically. I think w...

Awards Night

Once upon a time, Max from Max gave me the "You Cheer Me Up Award." How did she know that Lucy has always been one of my favorites, going back to my childhood. Max's courage in exploring ideas and confronting our preconceptions, inspires me. And now I can look at Lucy and Ethel on my page whenever I want to! Thank you, dear Max! Can we maybe have a discussion on the nature of "chocoholism," one day?Kim of Laketrees has given me the "Excellence Award," which I of course, humbly accept. I'm not too, TOO late on posting this one. Thank you, Kim! You are truly a facilitator and inspiration for our sense of blogging community, and you're just on top of your game! (except for your poor shoulder, but your artwork is just as terrific as always, in spite of it!)Bob Johnson of Black Holes and Astrostuff generously bequeathed to me the above "2007 Inpiring Blog Award." Yes, he gave it to me last year and I'm just posting it now, but with gratitude in spite of tarditude. (is that a word?) O...

Sacred Patterns: Light Creates Shadow
2008-03-06 03:23:00
When we take the time to really LOOK at things, age-old patterns are revealed to us. These are the patterns that transcend time and particulars of age, place and species. I see, in the late afternoon light molding these leaf portraits, hints of cosmic power that I cannot understand, but that I know has endured through the ages. I don't believe the diversity and order of the universe are just coincidences, borne of chance and random combinations of circumstance. I believe they are orchestrated by a higher intelligence beyond our comprehension. It disturbs me that humans have a need to provide distinct and rigid definitions of this power and to try to assert the truth of their particular conception. From our need to label things in order to provide ourselves a coherent and comfortable self-definition, comes war, misery, death and destruction. What matters to me is that there is light and that miracles unfold at every level of the universe. What matters to me is that I believe in God . ...

Digital Enigmas
2008-02-25 16:45:00
My digital paintings consist of photomanipulation, computer-generated and mixed media works, mostly colorful abstracts with a touch of the mysterious.Digital art offers us possibilities for finding new ways of seeing, not conceived of before the computer era. New realms of vision and perception, from the everyday to more unusual phenomena, are opened up for us. Digital painting will never replace real-time, brush-and-pigment painting, but it brings us myriad new dimensions of vision, not readily attainable by traditional means alone. But most often, as in traditional forms of painting, the meaning of an image is the meaning the viewer gives it. Ambiguity is satisfying because it calls on the viewer to engage his/her intellect and perception, and provides a unique and singular visual experience. For me, art is not about copying reality, but about providing the exhilaration of this new visual experience. I hope you enjoy looking at my work. You might be interested to know that these im...

The Opening of My Show "Peripheral Vision"
2008-02-11 18:30:00
On Saturday afternoon my solo painting show opened at the Alfred Van Loen Gallery at South Huntington Library on Long Island. The weather was overcast and chilly, but not especially wintry. We had a great turnout, and the show was beautifully curated by Deborah Katz. Of course my paintings look a whole lot better on the large and well-lit walls of a beautiful gallery than they do crowded onto my walls at home. My thanks to all my visitors and to my blogger friends who sent their best wishes! One of my favorite moments was actually on Friday, when Deborah and I were hanging the show for Saturday's Opening . Two adorable kids came through the gallery with their mother, and I heard them utter "Oooh, Mommy!" in excited voices, as they pointed at one or another of my paintings with huge smiles on their faces. It seems they loved my colors! Now there's my most enthusiastic audience, I thought! Maybe I haven't lost the child in me, after all!I had to wonder how such a tiny tot as this lit...

Almost Perfect
2008-02-06 03:42:00
"Almost Perfect " - Photo by Lynda Lehmann, c 2008 A pink Camellia basks in the subdued and filtered mid-winter light of a greenhouse. This one is blooming earlier than many of its still-dormant counterparts. Within the contours of its delicate petals is a delineation of order, peace, and unassuming beauty. The slight blemishes at one or two of its petal tips, do not mar its overall magnificence. Perhaps in seeing this we can remind ourselves that to find the beauty within us all, is not to imply that we must fulfill an ideal of perfection. Maybe we, like the flower, are beautiful and complete--each of us--in spite of our imperfections.Tonight before you go to sleep, why not concentrate on all the good and kind and decent things you have done today or in the past week. I hope you will find your personal beauty in that meditation, and be graced with sleep as serene as this quiet flower!Image and text c 2008 Lynda Lehmann. Warmth in February
2008-02-04 03:44:00
Spending an afternoon in a greenhouse can take us away--as far away as the tropics. It's a great way to escape the winter blues! Although today wasn't bad, here in the Northest USA, for a winter afternoon. Bright sunshine and around fifty degrees, and very uplifting after many gray and gloomy, damp and raw days.I thought I'd publish these orchid photos which I took today at our local arboretum, to give you a taste of warm, exotic places. Hope you've had a great weekend!

Monkey Business
2008-02-02 03:48:00
Monkey Business - c 2008 Lynda LehmannI've done several new paintings in the past week, hoping to have more work for my upcoming show. I had great fun with this one, and that's probably somewhat obvious to you in looking at it. It's 24 x 36 inches, painted in acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas. It's very colorful and full of gesture and motion, but my eye is usually comfortable with chaotic compositions. This one is somewhat surreal and musical, with an organic feeling to it. I'm not quite sure whether the bottom right corner is finished. It's seems a bit empty to me, as if it's calling for a little more articulation of the detail there.Another problem for me is that at times I prefer this as a vertical composition, and other times I prefer it on the horizontal. This is a mystery to me, as I usually have a strong preference one way or the other. How do you like it best?I'll try to post a few more of my new works before my show, and later on, photos of the Opening. Thanks for ...

Peripheral Vision
2008-01-28 03:43:00
"PERIPHERAL VISION," a solo show of my abstract acrylic paintings, opens at the Alfred Van Loen Gallery at the South Huntington Library in South Huntington, NY, on February, 9, 2008, and will run through March 6. The Opening Reception is from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and the show will be curated by Deborah Katz.Hoopla - 48" x 60" STATEMENT: My paintings are energetic, active if not frenetic, and complex. I feel they reflect the complexity and mutability of personal consciousness, as well as the impermanence of what we call ?objective? reality. My work exhibits order within chaos, much as we experience a certain order within all the complexity and disorder of both civilization and the natural world. In my paintings I prefer the ambiguity, freedom and musicality of abstraction. My work is as chaotic as waves breaking on a beach or a swelling cloudscape impinging on a changing horizon. Reality is relative, not fixed. What we call ?reality? does not exist in any absolute sense, but only in increm...

Snowflake, Lace, Kale
2008-01-18 02:06:00
I started to balance my checkbook tonight, and somehow ended up blogging about this fine botanical specimen, instead. I told you: I'm addicted to blogging! (And to photography, of course...)This magnificent ornamental kale reflects the wonderful organization of nature, and the idea of fractals, more specifically: the idea of the forms of the parts refecting the form of the whole, and vice versa. It's amazing how each cell of a plant or animal "knows" how to differentiate itself, knows what it "wants to be," in a sense. And it certainly is a visual treat, as well! Image and text c Lynda Lehmann. You can purchase this image matted at my www.lyndalehmann.com site. My signature will be on the mat, not directly on the print. Or you can purchase it at my Imagekind gallery--plain, matted, or framed. The link is on my home page. For poster prints, you can try my Artist Rising Gallery, also listed on my home page.

She Sees No More
2008-01-14 03:32:00
I took this image on a walk at a local estate. I was attracted to this pedestal in the shadows, with the expressionless face and unseeing eyes highlighted as if for emphasis, by the lack of moss or rust-colored stain in this area. The vines hanging from the top and their shadows, add a grotesque or Gothic touch, and to me, bring in the idea of longing and loss.Is this face etched in stone in memory of a lost loved one? Is it a statement on mortality? Or on hopes of immortality? Is she a princess turned to stone by some mythic curse as punishment for her vanity? Or is she merely a pretty face, a superimposed decorative element in a lavish environment? Of course, you may draw your own interpretation! Image c Lynda Lehmann. Printed in Canon archival inks on pro photo paper, 8 x 10 inches. Matted to 11 x 14 inches and sealed in an archival plastic sleeve to protect it until you choose a standard-size frame. My signature will appear on the mat, not on the print. Please feel free to ask a...

Enchanted Forest
2008-01-13 04:00:00
Of course this is not a forest at all. It is, rather, a hardy ornamental kale struggling to embrace the sunshine and endure through cold winter days. Although this week has been relatively mild, last week's temperatures in the Northeast USA were formidable! When I saw this kale bursting with life, exploding its violet tones into the afternoon light, I had to look at it close up. That's when I saw magic in it, and had to shoot it on my way to the car, even though we were pressed for time and on our way to visit my mother-in-law.Looking at this image in Photoshop later on, I saw a bizarre yet beautiful landscape there, a full forest of exotic foliage in alluring tones of green, auburn and violet. So I HAD to work on it and post it, to share it with you.I haven't been making the rounds these past few days, but I hope to do that tomorrow. I hope everyone is having a happy and creative weekend!

The Warmth of Nostalgia
2008-01-11 03:59:00
The cozy, sunlit interior of this car at an Arizona auto show, made me miss bygone days when news was about who, on the block, had purchased a new (or classic) car, not about how many mass murders had taken place that morning. Were things really more simple when we were children, or does nostalgia color our memories?"Nostalgia " is available at http://www.lyndalehmann.com/ as a matted print, or you can buy it at Imagekind, plain, matted, or matted and framed. http://LyndaLehmann.imagekind.com/

Well, here I am blogging again, instead of working on my paintings! I've been eager to work on my new series of car shots. So here's another one that I took last week when we were visiting family in Arizona, and we happened to take in an auto show.A shiny hot-rod with plum-colored paint and impeccably polished chrome, was irresistible as a subject for abstraction. I hope you enjoy it. You can see where my interest in cars lies!"Plum and Chrome " is available at www.lyndalehmann.com. Please feel free to ask about available sizes. Rhythm in Blues
2008-01-09 02:35:00
I've been working hard to get ready for a solo show of my new acrylic paintings. The Opening is on February 9. So I've had to write a new bio and artist's statement, design and order post cards, paint the sides of all my gallery-wrapped canvases, and more. Since I'm not in the habit of signing my work--it seems arbitrary to do so, but I guess it has to be done for marketing purposes--I've had to take my paintings down from the walls and sign them all, as well. And I still have some left that need to be wired. After all this I have to address post cards. I doubt I'll use the entire 1000, lol, which was the smallest print run available!"Rhythm in Blues " is a bright geometric abstract in red, white, and blues, 30 x 40 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas. It's lively and rhythmic, with a musical feel. (I know it doesn't look very good against the green of my page...!) In case you just happen to be looking to purchase a painting today, it's available at http://www.lyndalehmann.com/...

The Colors of Bark
2008-01-05 04:51:00
I had no time to blog tonight, but I couldn't help myself. When I find 20 minutes or half an hour and start to work up an image, I have to see it through. So I'm addicted to photography, Photoshop, and blogging, all at once. Many times it gets in the way of my painting, which I'm trying to keep as my first priority. Especially as I have that show coming up.This is the bark of a palm. I found it to be such a textural treat, and full of colors and character as well, that I had to post it! I love the sunlight playing on it, making it glow and come alive for the eye! If you look closely, you can see the blue, orange, and purple tones. I'm truly coming to believe that some of the most stunning and magnificent scenes are to found in very small things, or portions of those things. And nature is the thing I like the most!Do you find beauty in this image, or am I just blinded by the (sun) light? If you want to see more of my photography, or my paintings, please visit www.lyndalehmann.com....

Scrub, Brush, and Boulders
2008-01-02 23:41:00
No, I'm not referring to a scrub-brush. I took this shot of the scrub, brush and boulders at Pinnacle Peak in sunny Arizona, where we spent last week with my family, for the holidays. Strangely, it was unseasonably cold. One year we seemed to have brought a monsoon with us, and this year, it seems we brought a cold snap. It was only about 30 degrees each morning, and the super dry Arizona air made it feel colder, I thought. It always amazes me how our Earth pours forth all its bounty and diversity, in so many ways. So many climates and terrains, each with its own unique set of flora and fauna. Before my first trip to Arizona about ten years ago, I anticipated only a desolation of sand and gravel in the desert, punctuated by the occasional Saguaro cactus, seen early in my life in the same cowboy movies that you might have enjoyed when you were a child.Nothing could be further from the truth. From the winding, groping Palo Verde tree to the pungent Mesquite, to all sorts of scrub gras...
