Future Urban Legends
2007-03-10 08:45:00 item 1.Daniel Griffin of Schaumberg, Illinois reported this story, told to him by a fellow electrician in UEW 778, in January of 2026.It happened to his son, who’s also an electrician. Seems like he got an urgent call one morning, folks had some bad wiring. Got the picture that it was a dangerous situation, but when he got to the place where the house should’ve been, it wasn’t there. Like, the address was 26, and there was a 24 and a 32, but no 26. So my friend’s son is wandering around, trying to find the house, when this service robot calls his name, says its owner gave the wrong address, and it’s gonna take this kid to the house. ‘Cept when he gets there, it’s no house. It’s just, like, a room in an abandoned building. Didn’t even have no electricity, lights running off battery-powered generators. What is there, right, is another service-bot running a dollar-ante poker game. And there’s five, six guys, you know, regular joes sitting around the table. I guess m... Vegetarian Is the New Prius
2007-03-08 23:49:00 Your hybrid car probably makes you feel better, and it undeniably makes some difference, but the sad (and even more inconvenient) truth is that if you really want to take a personal step towards saving the earth and fighting global warming, you should probably go vegetarian. Here's a quote from the article linked above:Last month, the United Nations published a report on livestock and the environment with a stunning conclusion: "The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global." It turns out that raising animals for food is a primary cause of land degradation, air pollution, water shortage, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and not least of all, global warming. That's right, global warming. You've probably heard the story: Emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are changing our climate, and scientists warn of more extreme weather, coastal floodi... Grad student outwits rodent
2007-03-08 07:46:00 (I've been working on a big non-fiction story about rats, which is actually about the impermanent nature of relationships. But this bit is really just about rats.)One morning I awoke to find myself one rat short, and although I slithered all over the floor and reached into every crevice, he eluded me all day. Not until the second night did he pop his head out from behind the refrigerator. I drew him out with some peanuts and snatched him up, much to his chagrin. When I returned him to his tower, I didn’t lock the door. The next morning, he was AWOL again. I didn’t have to look too hard to find him; that gross, dusty space beneath the fridge was a perfect hiding spot. He knew I couldn’t easily get back there; he was digging in. Also, he’d grown wise to the peanut trap and refused to reach for any food, even that left in the middle of the floor overnight. He wasn’t hiding, not exactly, because every time I walked past his spot, I saw the little white head peeking out at me, a... Skywalker/Starkiller: The Evolution of Star Wars
2007-03-03 21:10:00 Since I posted the Steampunk Star War s link a couple days ago, this seems like an appropriate follow up. Thanks to the Jedi Bendu, a collective of Star Wars enthusiasts, you may now read the original rough drafts and scripts of the Star Wars movies beginning with a synopsis written by George lucas in 1973. It is really rather fascinating to see the evolution of his original concept, and to see how dramatically it actually differs from the final form the first movie took. From Skywalker to Starkiller and back again, to the Sith knights, the evolution of the Skywalker/Starkiller family, how the Bogan and Ashla become the Force, how a pair of bumbling Bureaucrats stuck in for comic relief become R2D2 and C3P0... I was really surprised at just how much I got into reading thru this collection. The Star Wars universe may seem like a very tightly evolved series of stories that all had a long ago established background, but George had a very different storyline planned originally. Than... Tools for Prey: Female chimps move to fore in hunting
2007-03-03 15:59:00 For the first time, researchers have observed wild chimpanzees making and using tools for hunting. What's more, it's mostly the female chimps and juveniles that adopt this style of attack, which occasionally nabs a small mammal that the chimp then eats. A Slice of Wetland
2007-03-01 09:11:00 Eleventh Street makes a T where it hits KL Avenue, and foamy green retention ponds bask on all three sides. They’re real vigorous, verdant, vital little wetlands, throbbing with life. Colonies of cattails grow erect near the shore. The water beckons with banks of water lilies, their petals spread open wide to the sky.A blue heron might stand sentry at the far end of the biggest pond, where a cast of ten thousand frogs performs dinner theater every night. At dusk, knobby brown groundhogs sprout like peanuts from the grass. Turtles crawl out of the pond too. They all have yellow racing stripes up their head and neck, and they come in all sizes: some like your fist, some like serving dishes. Some like serving dishes in more ways than one, because they try to cross the street. They’re flattened, the texture of their shells cracked into ancient leather. The little claws never look dead. They’d grab the end of a stick if you poked them. One big turtle was almost run over by a boxy wh... More About: Land , Slice
Dropping the Faith Sandwich
2007-03-01 08:03:00 Now that I'm older and somewhat less retarded, I'm starting to understand that there really is no right and wrong, no good and bad. Everything is a fucking gray area.Well fuck. I mean, genocide? Sure, when the world was populated with say, 3 billion people back in the late 50's, yes, it probably was a bad idea. And now, I'm not so sure. 3 billion people more in the last 40+ years. Unbelievable. How are we ever going to survive the next 40 years?Probably not very well.I think I won't have kids of my own. Adoption, sure. Foster parenting, sure. But as to introducing yet another creature to witness what a disaster the world is turning into, no thank you. I sure hope the rest of my life pans out nicely and I don't one day find myself aiming a .45 at my temple because the the shit hit the fan in such an atomically unfortunate manner that the fan is no longer there, well, I'm just looking out for number one. I can picture myself towards the end of my time here, sitting in an old ru... More About: Faith , The Faith , Sand , Ping , Sandwich

Baby Robots Learn Emotions From People
2007-02-26 02:59:00 ""It is very important to detect when the human user is angry and the robot has done something wrong or if the human is lonely and the robot needs to cheer him or her up. We are focusing on emotions relevant to a baby robot that has to grow and help human with every day life." One of the first robots built in the project is exhibiting imprinted behaviour - which is found among birds and some mammals when born. "They get attached to the first object they see when born. Roliqueries - Limestone Sculptures by Amy Brier
2007-02-25 21:38:00 These are so friggin cool! I have carved some small sphere stone sculptures in the past, but nothing quite like these, and never with the intention to use them as interactive art tools as she has. Amy Brier designs these carved spheres to be used in sand to leave dramatic designs as they roll along. This takes the desktop zen sand box to a whole new level! Tips for Internet Dating #1
2007-02-25 01:57:00 The Department of Statistics Someone Pulled out of Their Rear reports that Inter net daters who include photos in their profiles receive eight times as many responses as those without photos. But obviously, this is a general statistic. Beautiful people get a lot more hits than ugly ones. If you're really ugly, a photograph may be a disadvantage. How can men who look like the Creature from the Black Lagoon even the playing field?Well, first, remember that if you're a guy from the Black Lagoon, you can always try for a girl from the Black Lagoon. Or, possibly, you could look me up. I am intrigued by the idea of dating a lurking horror. If you have tentacles, please drop me a line, courtesy of this blog. But, as you know, I'm weird, and not everyone thinks like me. Possibly, even girls from the Black Lagoon are looking to marry up. And let's face it: you could own your own mansion, a fleet of Ferraris, and a supersonic jet, and some people might pass your profile over for the sake o... More About: Dating , Tips , Intern
