hate mac ads, love irony
2007-02-24 17:06:15
I just noticed that Charlie Brooker’s great Mac Hat ing article has the very ads that he hates at the top side of the page. I had never noticed this because I use Firefox’s Adblock plugin, but Gavin pointed it out and so I got a nice little screenshot of it. I do think the ads are funny. wheres my observer music monthly
2007-02-24 17:06:15
I bought The Observer yesterday in the hope of reading, for the first time, its Music Monthly (or monthly music, or just music?) magazine. After making my purchase I made my way to Clements on Botanic where I was due to meet Ronan. I decided not to rush into reading the magazine, instead to read the main section first. It was only an hour later that I noticed the music magazine I had been looking forward to so much was not there. I was in shock. Flipping through each supplement to make sure it wasn’t hidden somewhere, Ronan tells me that they keep it behind the counter and should give it to me as I pay for the paper. They didn’t. So I decided there and then that I would in fact send an email to the good people at The Observer asking if they would send me a copy. Here ’s what it looked like. Hello there, I am emailing you to kindly ask if it would be possible for a copy of the Music Monthly magazine to be sent to me. This is probably a stupid question to ask, though ...

thanks for the reminder
2007-02-17 11:05:04
This evening I got a ‘nice’ reminder from my house ‘mate’ in the form a text message: Can I remind u that its ur turn to clean the house this week ie before sunday. Ignoring his lack of grammar and spelling in so few as 21 words, this is not the first time I have had a ‘reminder’ from said house ‘mate’ since moving in. We have a cleaning rota (drawn up by, again, said house ‘mate’) and yes I did forget to carry out my ‘duties’ last time, five weeks ago, though this isn’t the first time I have received a reminder of my cleaning duties by way of text message via ‘daddy of the house’. This week, however, I was fully aware of my ‘duty’, though I felt that there could be a small amount of leniency considering there was a fairly large party on Monday in which I did not partake, nor particularly enjoy as I did have to get up for work in the morning. Cleaning was done in the hours that I di...

venture photo shoot
2007-02-15 23:01:04
Last night I saw the inside of a photo studio for the first time. The portrait session that I won just before Christmas (though they say I didn’t ‘win’ it, I was ’selected’, or something like that) took place last night at the Vent ure Portrait Studio on the Lisburn Road. We had to wait for about 30mins for others to finish, but we were offered coffee, though before it has made the photographer came and introduced herself. Unfortunately I forget her name. We were brought into the studio. Half of the room was painted white with various lights around the room and a PC in the corner which was playing The Killers. First, we were told to take our shoes and socks off. I thought this was strange, but went along. She wanted to get us warmed up so to speak. My family isn’t the most energetic and lively bunch. Laid back and easy going would suit us more I think. So when bro and myself were asked to run towards the camera and photographer, whilst pushing da...

THE DELAWARES THE ELLIOTS TRIP FONTANE LIMELIGHT, BELFAST THURSDAY FEBRUARY 15TH Drink Promotions / F Visuals Brought together just 2 years ago through a mutual love of 70?s psychedelic rock and 90?s alt-country, Belfast based 6 piece The Delawares are certainly one of the country?s most exciting new acts. Sporting influences from The Flying Burrito Brothers to The Beach Boys, the bands reputation as a dynamic and rousing live prospect has been increased considerably since their augmentation to a 10-piece outfit. Now with a brass section and pedal steel guitar, the band are bringing their music to a much wider audience, notching up shows across the UK and Ireland. The Elliot s are three boys and one girl. They call Belfast home. Their breezy, melody-driven pop finds a home alongside indie giants like Razorlight or Kings Of Leon, with a wealth of charisma and maturity unusual for such a new band. Coupled Alan Haslam?s instantly memorable delivery, the band have made startling progres...

obligatory anti-valentines post
2007-02-14 16:59:11
I don’t like it. But then I don’t have any reason to like it. I do however know some non-single folk who also hate the day, seeing it as the most commercial ‘holiday’ in the calendar; nothing other than making certain businesses more profits. All those cards, flowers and ’romantic’ meals. Okay so there is supposed to be something else behind it, something about showing your significant other than you love them, or something. But if that can’t be done on any other day of the year, surely it becomes less romantic doing it today. There can’t be very much romance on a day where it is all expected to be done. Breakfast in bed, flowers, a card with a sickening poem, followed by a romantic candle-lit dinner. Why not just skip all the crap and and go straight to the sex? All that stuff can be done next week, or last week, or how about the 20th May? Its often sunny in May, and not half as cold.   Copyright Phil O’Kane © 2006-2007This ...

the 12 year-old blogger
2007-02-14 10:57:03
David Wilkinson is 12 years old. He has just written an article for Darren Rowse, creator of ProBlog ger .net, on Search Engine Optimisation. Just in case you are doubting the truth behind the claims that this blog is written by someone so young, he helped a BBC Radio DJ create his own blog. David writes runs his own blog at Techzi.net, and has gotten a surge of new readers thanks to the article. It is quite odd to read his blog - he writes in such a mature way and with such knowledge. I can’t remember exactly what I was doing when I was 12, but I wasn’t getting Dugg or talking about getting more readers to my website nevermind making $500 a month! badly drawn boy, belfast feb 12 2007
2007-02-13 22:56:02
Thanks to Across the Line I saw Badly Draw n Boy in the Mandela Hall last night. I must say, it was good, but not as good as I had hoped. Maybe it was because I didn’t know very many songs, or the fact that a lot of them seemed to run into each other and sounded very similar. It could also have been the fact that he had to read his own lyrics placed on a music stand in front of his keyboard, or that he looked at his watch. It certainly didn’t help that he started quite early. Certainly earlier than I was expecting. Having read on Ticketmaster that the doors opened at 7:30pm, though only got home at 8, we got down at 8:50. He had already started. According to one gig-goer, he had been on for about 30mins and was on his 5th or 6th song. It probably would have helped had we made it to the venue sooner, though I do think it was very early to be starting, and is 10:30pm not early to finish? Anyway - it was enjoyable. I recorded my first YouTube video! ‘All Possibilitie...

vote for me vote for ME!
2007-02-12 04:54:01
Its that time of year again, for the 2nd time. Voting has begun for the Irish Blog Awards, and those nominated are using a variety of tactics to get through to the shortlist. Theres the The negative approach, the prepared, the cleavage, helping others, pleading, singing, shock, honest, subtle, animated, non-existent, pity, stunned, grateful, child marketing, the cynical, and lots more begging. And of course, that wonderful logo is emblazoned across many blogs As for me. I’m not really expecting much this year unfortunately. My site Iced Coffee has been nominated for best Photo Blog, though I’m not expecting a win unfortunately. The reason being due to my super-sporadic posting over the last few months. Although, if you can have some sympathy for me and show understanding of the tough situation that has led to me not being able to update the photo blog for all this time, as mentioned yesterday that would be super. Or you could vote for my photo blog in place of this blo...

last.fm update with new feature
2007-02-11 16:52:05
Last.fm is one of the great services to come from this Web 2.0 generation. You see I have a bad memory; this is just one more web tool to help me ‘remember’ things. I now never have a problem answering the question “what are your favourite bands/artists?”. I just go to my Last.fm profile and list a few of my top artists. It is expanding everyday to something more that just a list of the songs I listen to. Clicking on an artist or song gives me similar artists/songs. Nothing new there. You can also listen to music by downloading the programme various controls on your desktop. The Lastfm radio is a great tool for listening to music that you don’t listen to already, as well many tunes you might. Choose either recommended radio or a particular genre and listen to an endless supply of music for free. Many artists have their own profile pages, where you can listen to a small selection of tracks, some even providing free downloads. I have been registered with ...

what happened to iced coffee?
2007-02-11 16:52:05
www.Iced-Coffee .com was once home to my beloved Photo Blog. I have not posted a new photograph since 25th Oct, then just a handful of times in sept, no updates in August, and a few in July. The blog was started on Wednesday 21st September 2005 out of my love of photography and recent discovery of Photoblogs. I first found a small handful of wonderful photographers who posted new photographs daily, quite soon after I knew I had to have one of my own. It was the fact that the pictures were (in most cases) taken so recently that I loved so much. I was able to look in on a different world, in a different country or city and to see something new each day. I quickly fell in love with Travis Ruse’s New York Subway photography. The way that he shoots on a busy train every day while thousands of people are taking their daily commute is something that has always inspired me. Showing no fear he captures images that show various aspects of the subway system and the people who use it. I ha...

I found out yesterday what I won. Having not received any further details in the three days since winning, I decided to contact Paul (ATL producer) myself). During one of my email checks via my mobile phone I read the reply from Paul. Hi Phil I think there was some confusion between us and the promoters there. Apologies you werent contacted sooner.  Yourself plus guest of your choice (over 18 only please) are on the guest list. The concert is on Monday night at the Mandela Hall in Queens University Students Union in Belfast. Badly Draw n Boy and Malcolm Middleton are the main bill so it should be a cracker. All the best Paul My day just got better. Much much better. I wasn’t even aware he was playing here. I have liked Badly Drawn Boy’s music for a few years; since watching About A Boy, and loving the soundtrack which is filled with sixteen brilliant songs by the artist. I haven’t seen him live before, so I am very pleased of this opportunity. I will be asking Ronan...

me, branded
2007-02-11 16:52:05
Via Online Fandom I found a rather intriguing site allowing you to place all the brands you are associated with into a nice little image, such as the one on the left. Its a nice little idea, though not without flaws, as pointed out by Nancy. Although there are many brands included, some rather obscure choices too, there are plenty missing. Take the music category. 37 in total, 8 aren’t bands, most are crap. Film: 27, 17 films, each of the four hogwarts‘ students’ houses, one actor (depp) and one director (Tarantino). Fujifilm? Wheres Nikon, Canon? The main criticism is that the images do not link to the appropriate site, or user profile. Besides all that, I like it. Almost want to link them myself… Copyright Phil O’Kane © 2006-2007This feed is indended for personal use only. If you are not reading it in your feed reader please let me know.

bbc weather?

The crazy weather and threat of snow must have too many people to the BBC’s Weather site lately. The default is London, though I want to change it to Belfast, but when I try to do so I get a nasty 502 error. Unfortunately a server error occured whilst trying to retrieve this page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/weather/sea rch/new_search.pl? search_query=belfast&go.x=0&go. y=0 We are currently working to correct this I hope they do ‘cos I wanna know how cold its gonna be. update Just remembered I have one of the best Firefox extensions: ForecastFox. (I’m not dumb I wanted to check the weather in work and forgot I don’t need to do it at home…) Thankfully it doesn’t look like there will be much snow if anyway in these parts this week, unlike in England. burn feeds
2007-02-11 16:52:05
In a feeble attempt to get more readers and join in the fun many others are having in the run up to the Irish Blog Awards I have decided to join Feed burner. It started out with a friendly game of “first to 100 subscribers“. Since then the stakes have been raised. Cue Round Two “The person who gets the biggest % increase in FeedBurn er subscribers between now and the Irish Blog Awards wins” Of course, like most new things I try out, I have come across a few problems. Having joined and navigated my way around the site I found the FeedCount Chicklet: Then I subscribed to my own blog. To test it out of course. Thats when I noticed problems. Apparently my site was last updated on Sun, Jan 14 2007 3:23 AM, and the last post was on Fri, Jan 12 2007 1:21 PM. Even if it wasn’t very up-to-date, I at least though I would now have one subscriber. Of course not. Feedburner says: 0 subscribers. The zero is huge too! I had to try adding it several more times to be su...
