Make it Right 9
2008-02-07 16:35:00 Today is the First Day of Chinese NewYear. As for your information, Chinese celebrates 15 days for every New Year. As we are celebrating with our family, consider the homeless in elsewhere.Another great project is running with 14 World known Architects with 13 Designs shown in Make it right 9 to help out thousands of homeless victims of Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005, in New Orleans. Make your donation for the homeless if you are afford to do so. Brad Pitt is taking part in this too."In keeping with Make It Right (MIR)?s overarching priority to work in cooperation with former residents of the Lower 9th Ward, the approach to new home design began directly with the homeowners themselves. Because local cultural influences gave rise to the pre-Katrina architecture so emblematic of the area, preserving that identity remains vital in reclaiming the spirit of the neighborhood. MIR?s goal is to join the history of this tradition with creative new architectural solutions mindful of enviro...

BIM for Construction
2008-02-01 16:25:00 "Vico?s Virtual Construction Software suite consists of six integrated solutions that are designed specifically to bring the benefits of BIM to construction companies. At the hub of the suite is Constructor, a dedicated construction modeling application that covers architectural, structural and MEP modeling, allowing contractors to create detailed Virtual Building models of their projects. The main difference between these models and the BIM models you can create with individual disciplinary tools such as Revit Architecture, Tekla Structures, ArchiCAD, and so on is that an object in Constructor includes a detailed ?construction recipe? that specifies various quantities and scheduling related attributes relevant to construction. Also, in Constructor, you would typically build the model as it would actually be built in the real world, for which a knowledge of construction is absolutely essential. Once the model is created, quantity-takeoff is automatically available and is quick and a...

GlassKote
2008-01-25 04:39:00 " There are essentially three ways to colour glass; by coating one surface, through adding minerals and other pigments to molten glass during manufacturing, and by laminating two or more pieces of glass with a coloured material sandwiched in between. The problem with laminated technologies is that their appearance isn't always good (the depth and quality of the color), the edges are not attractive, the material can be difficult to work, the types of glass are limited and may not support tempered glass, and most importantly, it is very expensive. Colouring molten glass is often not suitable since it is translucent, there are only a handful of color options, and it's also very expensive. When it comes to colour coatings for glass, several have come and gone, but none stand up to GlassKote. There simply has not been a product that demonstrates the durability, appearance, colour range, or overall quality of GlassKote. Troika by Norman Foster with GDP architects
2008-01-11 06:51:00 I recalled my ex-colleague (from GDP) showing me the plans of this project while I was working with something similar 2years ago. Architecture is not always as fun as it seems to be at times. We need to fulfill the plot ratio requirement and make up something special as selling point. Troika is a luxury with a free plan; random composition of vertical elements and horizontal concrete slabs; the contrast of materials between transparent glazing and solid concrete and the symphony of lights at night just makes it fun and lovely to see. There is an interesting video clip in http://www.troika.com.my/"The residential Troika Development is located at the north-eastern corner of Kuala Lumpur City Centre Park, with comprehensive views of the Park and Petronas Towers. The Foster design responds to the unique location with a scheme of three residential towers - of 38, 44, and 50 storeys respectively - that will be the tallest residential development in Malaysia. Transforming Digital Architecture from Virtual to Neuro
2007-12-27 12:10:00 "A few years ago, architects were almost obsessed with the question of how cyberspace and virtual reality are changing basic ideas about architectural space. But events like the Neuroaesthetics conference here in London , along with the increasing impact of neuroscience on contemporary architectural theory, marks a clear change of interests -- if not a paradigm shift. Significantly, the then almost ubiquitous word "virtual" is now being replaced by "neuro." 2007-12-14 18:51:00 I like this! The building form reflects the relationship of privacy and publicity. A rectangular glass box rapped round with solid concrete structure. The solid concrete seems to be pushing you away from the inner layer where functional areas are situated. Contrast of material between transparent glass panels and opaque, clean, solid concrete structure; long ramp entry from side way to the second level shows contrast towards the entry point to the office working area at ground level with simple, straight forward colour scheme and light treatment just makes it adorable to me. Casey Brown
2007-12-07 08:11:00 Fasinating stuff from Caroline Casey & Robert Brown ."A studio devoted to creating contemporary architecture through an organic understanding of building in direct response to climate, topography and lifestyle. Sensibility of place derives from years of working on historical buildings, learning the crafts, understanding the tectonics of biulding and how our time relates to history. This perspective creates a preference for lasting architecture ofunpretentious functionalism, using materials and expressed structure. This non prescriptive approach takes each client, site and brief as something one off and special. Waro Kishi + K associates
2007-12-07 07:57:00 "This is located in a highly fashionable district in the middle of Tokyo. The five-story building is occupied by a jewelry store on the first four floors and a salon for public relations and customer services on the top floor. Each floor in plan consists of just a single space and a stairway. The tiny site is 6.3 meters wide, 4.6 meters deep, and less than 30 square meters in area. My two basic design ideas were to adopt a structural system without columns in order to make effective use of the limited area and to make the overall structure as lightweight as possible in order to simplify the foundation. A reinforced-concrete wall structure is used on the lower three floors. Panels fabricated from steel sheets in a factory were assembled on the site for the fourth and fifth floors. As a result, construction work was much like assembling a model of the building." Designing with computer science.
2007-11-28 15:37:00 It was during my school time that a professor came to our school and demonstrated architectural design through computer science. And each of his book's front page has different design. We are getting nearer to a technology science dependant world. Hopefully I can cope up with the development later in life."Evolutionary algorithms are computational techniques widely used to solve difficult optimization problems. Evolutionary algorithms search for the best solutions by starting with a random population of solutions and iteratively subjecting that population to selection pressures that cause it to evolve. Solutions that fit better with the selection pressures live and breed, while solutions that fit poorly are eliminated from the population. After a number of evolution cycles, the population converges, revealing the best, most fit solutions. The Origins of Pattern Theory, the Future of the Theory And The Generation
More articles from this author:2007-11-28 15:26:00 "(A) Pattern Theory . I'm going to talk first of all about patterns and pattern languages, what I did about that, a few little points about problems we encountered, why we did it, how we did it, and so forth. That is a historical survey referring back to the late 60s and early 70s.(B) The Nature of Order. Then, I'm going to summarize the theoretical framework which has evolved out of the pattern work: a framework which is about to be published in a series of four books collectively called The Nature Of Order, four books that will be put out by Oxford University Press in the year 2000. That framework is a fairly radical departure from what the pattern language in the earlier theories contained, although it is consistent with them. That'll be the second thing. And, I'll just try and sketch that out in the hope that there might be some carryover or you might possibly find it interesting -- even though of course I will have no way to apply this to your field directly when I tell you ...
