I should admit as I commence this screed that I've been going through a serious crisis of faith. As a fashion blogger, it's gauche to acknowledge flagging fidelity to Fashion. (I capitalize it because I'm talking about the institution and business of Fashion.) Here is my confession nonetheless:Lately, reading fashion magazines makes me feel dirty. There is something wholly inauthentic and hypocritical about them. Fashion is expression - not giving a damn, as Gore Vidal so wisely said; but Fashion (with a capital F) is dictated expression (which is hardly expression at all). Magazines are mostly advertisements and pages and pages of nepotism in high gloss.I've read magazines for many years and have even been a subscriber in the past. My beef with magazines arose and then sat stagnant at a liminal phase for sometime, but now I've officially crossed the threshold and am throwing down my gauntlet.Magazines underrepresent people of color in a world where people of color are a...

The Passion of Tara Subkoff
2007-10-27 09:43:00
The New York Times has an interesting write-up on the new career path of erstwhile Imitation of Christ designer Tara Subkoff. Read it here.I typically like the gist of IOC, so I'm curious to see what happens to it now. Subkoff sure likes to keep the fashion world on its toes.

Marion Cotillard
2007-10-27 06:55:00
Earlier today I was looking at a picture of my grandmother taken in the early 1940s. I was marveling at her hairstyle. She had glossy dark brown hair looped and waved artistically, then strategically molded into an impressive bouffant.French actress Marion Coti llard , best known in the U.S. for playing Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, has a more contemporary version of my grandmother's coif. I'm glad, because it gives me the opportunity to post another picture of a stunning and talented non-blonde. If any of you receive the Sunday New York Times, be sure to read the interview with Cotillard in last week's Style Magazine in which she describes playing the iconic "sparrow." You won't regrette it.

Green With Envy

Eva Green , my favorite Bond girl, in Vanity Fair. She strikes me as an intelligent woman with gravitas, and, fortunately, Old Hollywood appeal. I get excited when someone breaks through who doesn't look like a generic Orange County girl. Source

Plaid on Plaid, Red on Red
2007-10-08 21:48:00
Perpetuating my obsession with red (see here, here and here), I've decided to start pairing red plaids. I never seem to tire of red experimentation. Because I live in the Pacific Northwest (home of Pendleton), I find myself attracted to a somewhat more chic version of the lumberjack look (note rhinestones and excessive eyeliner). Here's what I wore today (red flats on my feet not pictured):

Computerized Chloë
2007-09-03 00:38:00
I can't wait to see Chloë Sevigny's new line. Gawker says: "Check out the umlaut! Judging from the analogue angularity of it all, we're looking forward to her early Gameboy fall collection. Who can say no to a Tetris camisole and a deconstructed minimalist Donkey Kong shrug?"Could you say no?

I know I said I wouldn't be blogging, but I have to post an apology to my lovely readers. I just received a notice from Blogger saying I had dozens of unmoderated comments, some of them dating back a few months. In other words, many of you have been thoughtful enough to comment, but your comments have been sitting ignored somewhere in cyberspace. I'm sorry! They're published now! I don't know what happened. At any rate, I'm enjoying the Midwest and spending time with Bison of Unusual Size (but I'm learning that Midwesterners are very particular about just who gets to be called "Midwestern" - it's a sensitive topic).Next week I'm off to Chicago. I've never been before, so if any readers have been to Chicago and have any advice, I'd love to hear it.Love,A

Catherine McNeil for Fall
2007-08-07 17:20:00
I like this selection of fall looks, catching some of the season's signatures (high-waisted pencil skirts, statement making hats, unexpected sweaters, great boots, reds), but which would you wear?Costume National - really basic shape but with eye-catching detailing on collar, no accessories, disheveled hair.Giambattista Valli - a little witchy, but very crisp.Louis Vuitton - a lot going on, a burnt palette, comfy, booties, and an artist's tam-o'-shanter -ish hat.

So, So Not Generic
2007-08-06 01:06:00
Louis Vuitton has done something no other fashion house has done - they've named a Nobel laureate and former Soviet leader as the face of their luggage campaign. Mikhail Gorbachev, photographed by Annie Leibovitz and appearing beside the Berlin Wall, is replacing Scarlett Johansson this fall. Catherine Deneuve will appear as well. Any thoughts?

Australia's Next Top Model
2007-08-06 00:11:00
Apparently the Australian version of Top Model has a lot more credibility and clout than the original. Unlike the American version, in which "top" models get a short-lived cosmetics deal and a photoshoot in Elle, the Australian winner, Alice Burdeu, has landed a September Vogue cover.Winners from America's Next Top Model usually hit the party circuit for a few months and then fade quickly, unless they can score another fifteen minutes by humiliating themselves on lowest-tier reality shows. Also, on ANTM, neither the contestants nor the winner actually look like top models (like the Gemmas, Darias, Doutzens, Frejas, Stams and Sashas of the world). The contestants look like catalogue models at best, which would be fine if the show was called America's Next Top Catalogue Model. The stunning and versatile Burdeu actually looks like she could do couture runway, land competitive campaigns and do beautiful editorials. (And she's Faye Dunaway's doppegänger, too.)Vogue AustraliaDotspo...
