Toph Action Figure WIP part 4
2008-06-02 14:31:00
Okay, here's some more WIP pictures. I Cut up the leg joints. It's not your typical joint design, I 'borrowed' it from Revoltech Revy. This way you wont disturb the flow of the sculpt with ugleh ball joints. But the down side is the cut is so visible, it disturb the flow of the sculpt Go figure... The elbow is a normal hinge joint. I'm kinda surprised my wax is strong enough to make these So total Points of Acticulation (POA from now) is already 11! And I'm still going to add shoulder joint, hands, and feet. Oh boy... For the pose, it's not great. Since this is only a test fit, the joints are all loose... very loose. So posing her is a bit of a challenge, at least for now.

Toph Action Figure WIP part 2
2008-05-30 01:54:00
Just a quick update on the current state of my Toph action figure.Doing this in wax sure is a whole new learning experience. To get a smooth surface I fist rake the surface of the wax. Then using heated sanding pad, I scrub the surface smooth. For polishing, I use water and t-shirt rag, I find that using sanding pad also work beautifully (don't heat the pad this time). In the last post I said that I don't want to so ball joints. Well, scratch that. Toph will have at least 2 ball joints on her. I'm still trying out the mechanism though. More soon!

Just a quick update on the current state of my mystery action figure. If you watch Avatar: the last air bender, you probably know who she is. She's Toph Bei Fong, my favourite character in the avatar universe. As you can see this is still a very rough sculpt. For this figure I'm going to go simple in the articulation department. So Toph will have at least 10 articulation points. The joints are in the neck, shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, and knee. I might add more though, but I don't think I'm going to include ball joints in this figure, because I don't know how to make them :pMore to come in the coming days.

Mystery Action figure! articulated! OMG!
2008-05-23 17:35:00
I should have uploaded photos on how to work with wax, at least how I work with it. But I think that a video might explain it better then words or still photos. So I'm going to postponed the wax working photos and make a video of it.As a subject for the video, I've planned to do a mystery action figure. Articulated and made in wax. Then I'll transfer the wax sculpt to a more sturdy material for finishing and painting. For those of you who asked about doing some articulated figure, either anime or not, you'll gonna love this. For now I leave you with this very early, and fugly, WIP shot. Try to guess the figure I'm trying to make ;) here's a hint: Rock LoliStay tuned, and subscribe so you don't miss out :D

Wax figure tool works
2008-05-21 12:35:00
Working with wax can be tough if you don't know how the material works. One of them is working with heat or heated tools. I'm a beginner in doing wax, and most of the pro that I've know suggest to invest on a waxer pen. It cost a lot too, fortunately some cool guys made a DIY waxer pen using cheap soldering iron. I haven't tried that, but will if I had the time (already making plans to build a dimmer box). In the mean time, I'm doing my wax sculpt with these...The only thing that I consider hi-tech and expensive in my arsenal is the small butane torch (it's $15). The oil lamp (filled with Alcohol) and the stove lighter can be obtain easily. I mainly use the lamp to heat my metal tools and heat up small chucks of wax for patching. The stove lighter and the torch is used for blending the wax and make it smooth and shiny. I've taken pictures on how I use the torch to blend the wax, but it came out blurry. So I need to retake those photos again. I'll post them on Friday, so if yo...

M.WaxZ Trial Run part 2: Sculpt test
2008-05-20 07:32:00
Well, I though what better way to test a modeling/sculpting wax than to sculpt with it. So I've started to sculpt this bug babe for the clubhouse 55th sculpting jam. I'm using a modified version the S00 wax. To make the wax pliable, I use a desk lamp with a 40 watt lamp to heat it. If I see the wax becomes too liquid, I turned off the lamp and rest the wax. Here's what's done after a couple of hours of wax 'testing'.The armature is made from aluminum wire, a simple armature that I'm very fond of. I add small balls of wax to build up the body and define muscles. I then use a small butane torch to blend the wax balls up. At this stage I rarely use my tools, but then again your fingers are your best tools. I need to make a rake tool to further blend the wax together. From here on out I may need to use heated tools. I'll cover that in tomorrow's post. What I find is the S00 wax is fast to cool but not very strong for small, thin pieces. It's stiff, but not strong. It's also do...

In my ongoing quest to make myself some good modeling wax, I've finally able to say that,"I think I found something!"Inspired by Gary Overman and his wonderful waxes (visit www.willowproducts.com) I start my journey on the land of waxdom. Gary has been a great guy in giving me some pointers on mixing my own wax, so I want this chance to thank Gary for his help. Thank you Gary!Unfortunately some material that Gary suggested isn't readily available where I lived (Indonesia), so I need to find alternatives, substitute, and experiment with various material to get something that I can call a modeling wax. My main motivation is to produce a modeling wax for local sculptors that is readily available locally, uses local ingredients (as much as I can), and is safe to play with. After much experimenting and even more failed formulas...many I tell you! I've picked 4 formula that I'm happy with (thank God!). Do note that the color are to make it easier for me to recognize them. I'm plannin...

Doodle Sculpt: Crazy Trix Rabbit
2008-05-07 07:27:00
Did this for the Clubhouse Sculpting Jam #54. The theme is Cereal box.I've come up with a concept for the Silly rabbit on those Trix commercials, with the slogan "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!". He finally snaps! Combining elements from the Batman Dark Knight's Joker and Kill bill I've sculpted this. Now imagine he's saying,"Silly kids, why so serious? You know no Trix will make silly rabbit go CRAZY!"He is holding a crumpled box of Trix in his right hand and yeah, that's a severed hand :)

Current figure WIP: Nariko from Heavenly Sword
2008-05-02 04:05:00
Finally after a long testing and experimenting, I think I've found myself a nifty modeling wax formula. YAY!To test drive this formula, I sculpted a figure of Nariko from Heavenly Sword for The Clubhouse 53rd Sculpting Jam. It's a slight departure from making the usual anime figure, but this was fun...so much fun! That and mostly I'm still giddy from excitement because I've finally found a wax recipe (and ingredients) that works!! :))I am poor at documenting my progress. So forgive me for the lack of progression steps in the photo. The first step I did before making the figure is to gather references. A Lot of references. You can't have enough references :D I found Creative Uncut to be, indeed, a treasure trove for video game reference. I've gathered up pictures of Nariko from various concept art, in game footage, and fan art to give me the information that I need. Even then I still lack the details on her belt strap thingy :(I printed out the pictures and made a wall of referen...

Help me improve MidzToyz!
2008-05-01 10:44:00
Hi gang!Sorry for the lack of updates (again) in the past few weeks. I've been caught up with my wax-making experiment, and are now busy preparing samples to be shipped to tester and stocking the shelves.Anyway, as you might read from the title, I need your help to improve this blog. For this purpose I've added a poll to help me achieve the goal. The poll is about what content you would like to see more in the blog. Do you like to see more tutorials/guides? more WIP shots of the project that I'm working on (the ones where I can show WIP shots that is), or something else. This will help me plan regular updates a little easier. I'm also going to add some reviews about toys and books that has something to do with sculpting and toy making once in a while. There's also a new look for in the works. The poll will be up until the end of the month. It'll give me a comfortable time space to adjust and make preparation for giving this blog a makeover. So don't forget to vote, people! You...

Making an Anime Figurine: Female Leprechaun part 3. Sculpting the face
2008-04-01 15:35:00
We're back again folks! As promised, in this installment we're going to sculpt a face. An anime face. Again, I didn't take many in-progress shot. But hopefully this few pictures can better explain how I approach sculpting an anime face. Here we go!At first I only have a ball shaped like a reverse tear drop to define the head. Then I add the nose and sculpt it into a pointy button shape. Most anime noses are like this. I then add a ball and blend it to make the forehead. With the forehead added and dried, I then start defining the shape of the face. I draw guide lines where the major facial feature will be placed (eyes, mouth, etc.). I didn't drew in the ears since they're going to be covered by hair anyway. I also drawn in the shape of the chin and jaw to get that 'anime' look. Using a hobby knife, I then carve the contour of the face. I cant really explain, go grab an anime figure and study the face. You'll get what I'm talking about.Okay, here is the part where I jump way ah...

Making an Anime Figurine: Female Leprechaun part 2
2008-03-30 16:41:00
We're back again folks! My PC got infected by a virus so there's some delay in updating the blog. Sorry for that. I've also keep forgetting to snap a couple of pictures while I'm in the zone. It looks like this figure isn't going to be finished in just 48 hours. I will try to finish it before the month's end though.Let's get part 2 started!Picking up from the last post, the armature has dried and it's time to put in some flesh and muscle. At this stage I just put on sausage and ball shapes to define the major muscle groups. This is also the stage to get the (final) pose and balance right. The left most picture was the end result after some drying, carving and sanding. Keep all your shavings and scraps from the carving! I'll tell you why later. After the pose has been establish, now begin the detailing stage. For this stage it's almost impossible for me not to cut apart a figure. Seeing that in the concept Cloe wear a jacket and pants, it's natural to split the figure into t...

Making an Anime Figurine: Female Leprechaun part 1
2008-03-28 14:12:00
First off, sorry for the long delay folks! It's been quite a hectic past few days for me, but now we're back on track! For starters the Jam's deadline has been forwarded to 30th of March. So be ready to get a flood of updates in the next 2 days. This will be a 48 hours sculpt project, so it'll be finished around Sunday evening Jakarta time. I hope you've checked the Tutorial /guides posts earlier, since I'm not going to go into details in some areas (if at all).Lets get part 1 started!Preparation is important. So for this project I tidied up my work space a bit. Behold my messy work table! The next picture shows the tools that I use when sculpting. Most of them are dental tools and handmade tools. Sorry for the blurry picture. If you need to see the tools more clearly or wondering what some of them are used for, just give me a shout in the box to the right. One more thing that I need for this project is an oven/dryer to dry (DUH!) the clay. For this I use a plastic bowl lined with...

Making an Anime Figurine: Female Leprechaun part 0
2008-03-24 15:18:00
Let's get this thing rolling folks! The goal for this tutorial/guide/WIP documentation series is to make a finished sculpture in 7 days. Starting today (24th March) and hopefully we'll have a finished piece by next Monday (31st March). What I mean finished is just that a finished sculpt without being painted, but I will give my best to paint it if I have time. I started this to challenge myself, to practice my sculpting skill, get organized, and be comfortable in working under harsh deadlines. The figure that I'll be sculpting is a female leprechaun, anime style! This sculpt will also be entered in the clubhouse 52nd Sculpting Jam. I like to do an internet rule #63 sculpt from time to time. It's fun! Everything is better with tits... so they say :DWhy anime style? because I like it. It has fewer constraints regarding realism and the fact that I began sculpting to be able to own an anime figure, a sexy anime figure, with huge mammaries... and cast off feature..oh my. "Those PVC and...
