2008-10-22 18:22:00
I’ve had a few worried people asking me “Do bonsai lose their leaves in the winter?“. This depends on what type of bonsai tree that it is. If it has got leaves and it’s kept outdoors, the chances are that it’s a deciduous type tree or bush and therefore it will lose it’s ...

It’s suddenly gone very hot here in (usually rainy) Wales. The last week or so has brought on temperatures of 26C (80F). It’s been a bit of a shock because it’s normally a little chilly in the mornings here all year round. My bonsai have also been a bit shocked at the ...

Care of Flowering Bonsai Trees
2008-05-20 22:12:00
Seeing as this week is the week of the Chelsea Flower Show I thought I’d write about flowers. Some bonsai are enhanced by flowers such as the azalea or serissa. They do however sometimes need a bit of special care and feeding so that they remain healthy during and after flowering. The main part to remember is that they will need more fertilizer than usual during the flowering and afterwards too. You can use your normal bonsai fertilizer for this purpose. They also need to be checked that they have enough water while in flower as it can drink more than normal while they are there. On some bonsai trees the flowers turn into fruit afterwards such as apples or cherries. It is not recommended that you let the bonsai grow fruit every season as it can really put a drain on it’s resources. It takes an immense amount of sugars and nutrients to create fruits so it should not be taken they it will be able to grow them often. It’s best to pluck them off when still small ...

Leaves Give A Tree Strength
2008-05-15 21:20:00
Leaves are there to build up a tree’s strength. Cut down a small sapling to below the leaves and chances are it will not survive. The leaves actually convert sunlight into sugars which can then be used to heal broken bark, grow extra roots and branches and generally get stronger. Use leaves to help ...

Overnight Snow
2008-04-06 11:41:00
We had some snow last night here in Wales which left the garden looking very pure and white. I was considering covering up the trees which have come into leaf last night but I prefer to let things happen naturally, plus I was feeling ill. They might have a little bit of frost damage as a result but it shouldn’t last too long until new leaves appear again. Quite a lot of the bonsai have not sprouted leaves yet anyway, it’s mainly only the smaller more eager shrubs such as berberis, hawthorn and cherry. Hazel is starting to come into leaf also but this late snow might knock it back a bit. Here are some pictures of my snow covered trees for you: Juniper Hinoki Cypress 2 junipers and a japanese maple © Written by Adam Nantel - please visit Bonsai Art for more great content.

Big Bang world record (part 1)
2008-04-06 11:22:00
Here is a list of blog sites which are part of the Big Bang world record list. It is in two separate posts because the list is so large: *Start Copy Here*You do not have to be tagged to play along. This game is simple and so are the rules. 1. Copy from *Start Copy Here* through *End Copy Here* 2. Add your site(s) to the list. Just be sure to post the “Big Bang ” at each site you add. 3. Tag or don’t tag, your choice, however, the more tags you create the longer the list will grow. 4. Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving me a comment HERE. I will add you to the master list. (If you would like a scroll box code, leave me your email address and I will email it to you.) Scroll Box Example. (I decided not to use the box for the Big Bang for ease of copying.) 5. Come back and copy the master list back to your site, often. This process will allow late-comers to get as much link benefit as the first ones in. Once you are on the master list people who have...
