Tips and Techniques - Part II

Welcome to my second part of Tips and Techniques. I hope you enjoyed the first part! I had many emailing me for more private tips. I thank you all your emails and your comments, they are really appreciated.Lets continue where we left?.==Solvents and Mediums==As a person with asthma that also has three kids with asthma, strong solvents are not an option in my house, aside from the fact that I don?t like them.My technique, alla prima, doesn?t involve the use of solvents not even to clean my brushes. The only thing I use to clean my brushes is warm water and a good soap.As for the mediums, the only medium I do use is liquin in case I really need it, otherwise not even that. ==Brushes==Ever since I tried the synthetic brushes I fell in love with them. I recognize that I abuse my brushes and natural hair brushes sometimes don?t do it for me. But I think the main reason I love my white synthetic brushes so much, is because the hairs don?t spread apart so easily as brushes made with natur...

I have being getting lots of questions from other artists wanting to jump into the daily painting and artists asking for tips, so I decided to start a series of posts just for my artists friends out there.I'm starting with a list of the materials or tools I use, 'cause I think they are as important as the paintings itself.==Support==First of, the masonite or hardboards I use, and I do use a variety of them in many sizes, from 4" x 4" all the way to 24" x 24". I don't make any of them, don't want to as I figured I'll be waisting time preparing boards instead of painting (which is the thing I love!) and since my supplier carries everything, and I truly mean EVERYTHING I don't need to shop anywhere else. For a link to my supplier go to the bottom of my menu.Ok, the boards. I use Ampersand Gessobords and Hardbords along with Blick Studio Artist Boards in different thickness from 1/8" deep all the way up to 2" deep. I generally use the thin 1/8" - 3/8" deep boards for my daily pain...

Golden Provencal Hour III

Oil on Gessoed Hardboard (Masonite)6" high x 6" wide Click here to bidI have loved so much this scene since I snapped the picture on one of our road-trips to France in 2005, that this is the third painting I've done so far. I feel like Monet, painting the same haystacks over and over again. The combination of the purple-bluish sky with the golden haystacks and field is something I really love about this particular scene. It reflects that so called golden hour which I've referenced in many of my landscape paintings of previous years, in which the sky is turning to the night yet the sun in the horizon is still bright enough to bathe with light all the buildings, objects and greenery it can touch while tinting the sky with a lovely purple-violet color. I don't go out too much anymore, family and kids mainly keep me at home more than I would like to, but just looking at this painting and the picture reference is enough to give me the feeling of being outside enjoying the moment.Quest...

Oil on 3/8" deep Hardboard (Masonite)6" high x 6" wide Click here to bidBefore Christmas I went with my youngest son (4 1/2 years old) and all his classroom to a bakery factory as part of a field trip. We baked an apple pie together and we had tons of fun, but I knew that was going to be a great opportunity also to take pictures for reference so armed with my camera I went. The place was not too crowded but enough couples and friends here and there enjoying a just out of the oven pie. These two girlfriends caught my attention right away, mainly because of the play of light as they were sitting by the windows.Questions? Comments? The Bean - Chicago
2008-01-09 06:44:00
Oil on Gessoed Hardboard (Masonite)6" high x 6" wide Click here to bidMy last day in Chicago couldn't have ended without taking pictures of the famous Cloud Gate, better known as The Bean . A spectacular reflective sculpture in Millennium park that attracts thousands of visitors. I took tons of pictures of every angle and still I look at the pictures I took and I'm amazed at such a simple but incredible sculpture. I finished this piece not too long ago, the second for today, very loose and without much thinking or stopping in the little details.Questions? Comments? Detroit Water Tower
2008-01-08 01:09:00
Oil on Gessoed Hardboard (Masonite)6" high x 6" wide Click here to bidFor the first time since we moved to Michigan in February, 2006, I walked in Down Town Detroit . The reason why I didn't do it before? well everyone including the news say Detroit is one of THE most dangerous cities in the US, and according to the numbers extremely close to Caracas, Venezuela, so I got really scared to even dare going there by myself. So before Christmas my husband and I needed to go to the Canadian Consulate which is located in down town Detroit, so I took the opportunity to bring my camera and capture some snapshots of the small motor city. Compared to Atlanta, Chicago, Bilbao, Madrid, Miami, Paris and even Caracas, Detroit is a tiny city with a handful of tall enough buildings. Nonetheless a very interesting city. While walking the streets I came across this water tower and I couldn't resist to take a picture. I knew right there that it was going to be quite a challenge to paint this scene bec...

2008-01-05 02:09:00
Oil on Gessoed Hardboard (Masonite)7" high x 5" wide (12.7 x 17.8 cm)Click here to purchase this painting. Limited Edition Prints available.I've being wanting to paint this scene ever since I took the picture in 2004, for some reason I kept putting it away. I was attracted to the colors of the arches of the bridge in particular. Lots of grays, purples and blues. I might do this painting in a larger format for my next show in New York. Rio Caliente is the village in the north of Spain in the Asturias region where my mother-in-law was born. We visited the village with my husband's cousins whom came to visit us straight from Venezuela, while we were still living in Spain. No more than 100 habitants, silent and peaceful place with just one way in and out. Not my favorite place to live, but a nice place to relax and get away of the stress of the big city.I HAVE BEEN TAGGED~By Diane Whitehead! Here are the rules: 1. Oil on Gessoed Hardboard (Masonite)6" high x 6" wide Click here to bidHappy New Year ! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas time a safe and Happy New Year . Finally I came out of my cave, once again to start painting. Holidays don't sit good on me and probably to many of us women with husbands and kids. This is the time of the year in which we work twice and even three times more than usual. We started the year with snow, lots of snow here in Detroit , and much more where I live, about an hour north of Detroit. The kids as of yesterday back to school and me finally back to my studio, painting like crazy for the New York show next month, gosh time flies! Anyways, this is my new painting for the year, a small, very loose and colorful (as always! =]) oil painting of a mother and daughter shopping at the mall. I find myself painting with more color than usual when the weather is cold and there is still snow on the ground. I guess the extreme white landscape triggers something on me that sa...

Well hello! it's being quite a while since my last post. Certainly doesn't look like I'm a daily painter, but gosh, yes I am! if there is a record for producing paintings in a day, then I'll have that one! I've being painting between 3 and 5 paintings everyday, you heard that right everyday! I've being extremely busy preparing for my next and biggest show ever, the Artexpo New York. After years of trying finally it became a reality, and I'm not wrong if I say I'm the FIRST daily painter to hit the New York Artexpo, right? I'll have not only small paintings on my booth part of the daily painting but I'll also have larger paintings as well.I finally got my booth number and is #211, I'm in a corner so if you happen to be in New York between February 28 and March 3, 2008 stop by my booth to take a look and chat... and don't forget to bring a latte!... for me of course =]Although I've being painting more than the share for the daily painting, I'm painting exclusively for th...
