Acts of Nature Could Cost You If You Rent a Car
2007-07-09 06:14:00
It "Hertz" to tell you this, but major car rental companies like America's largest are passing along the costs of repairing vehicles damaged by "acts of nature or God." Guess again if you think Hertz is inventing the wheel with its policy or traveling a different path than its competitors on this matter. "This is not new for us," points out Richard Broome, Hertz vice president of corporate affairs, in Park Ridge, N.J. "That provision has been in our general contract for about the past year," Broome noted. "Our competitors such as Enterprise have been doing this for quite some time, and now we're implementing this for all our other customers as well," said Broome.Insurance industry executives Dan Kummer and Janine Gibford weigh in with practical coverage advice. For starters, Kummer issued a cautionary message on the subject of major car rental companies that have changed their contracts to discontinue coverage of damage to vehicles caused by "acts of nature or God" such as earthqu...

Most Stolen Car Facts
2007-07-09 06:08:00
Is your vehicle HOT, HOT, HOT? It just might be according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's (NICB) Annual Hot Wheels report, listed below. Take a look; you might be very surprised to see which automobiles thieves are going for and which they are not.Curious why older models top the list over newer, flashier vehicles? "Older cars are often stolen because the parts for these models start to become harder and harder to come by, making the pieces more profitable for thieves. This is why we often see a clustering effect with the same make and style of vehicles being stolen year after year," states one NICB official. "Vehicle thieves also follow market trends and target the most popular vehicles because they provide the best market for stolen vehicle parts and illegal export to other countries."Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles:1995 Honda Civic1989 Toyota Camry1991 Honda Accord1994 Dodge Caravan1994 Chevrolet Full Size C/K 1500 Pickup1997 Ford F150 Series2003 Dodge Ram Pickup1990 Acura ...

Raikkonen wins the Silverstone Grand Prix
2007-07-09 05:59:00
For a while McLaren looked good, as first polesitter Lewis Hamilton and then world champion Fernando Alonso had spells in the lead of Sunday?s British Grand Prix, but when Ferrari?s Kimi Raikkonen ran longer than Alonso in the second stint it was all over bar the shouting.By the time the Finn refuelled for the second and last time, on lap 43, he was able to retain the lead with ease and head Alonso home by 2.4 seconds after backing off in the final lap.It was not a great day for Lewis Hamilton in the other McLaren, who struggled throughout to match his main rivals? pace, and had Felipe Massa not had to start from the pit lane after his Ferrari stalled on the grid in the original start, he would arguably not have been able to maintain his record of finishing on the podium in every Grand Prix he has driven. As it was the Englishman maintained his championship lead by taking a distant third place, and his aspirations were helped a little when Massa, after a strong recovery drive, was un...

Auto Insurance: The Protection You Need
2007-07-08 07:03:00
On average, a motor vehicle crash occurs every 5 seconds, a person is injured in an accident every 11 seconds, and a fatal injury occurs every 12 minutes. Those are scary thoughts as you head out the door to school, work or to the store and convincing evidence of why auto insurance coverage is so necessary. However, you can rest a little easier knowing that the crash fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled is the lowest it has been since record keeping began 30 years ago, registering at 1.46, and remained below 1.50 for the second consecutive year in a row.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) 2004 Early Edition Report, the number of police-reported motor vehicle crashes occurring on the highways dropped to under 6.2 million from more than 6.3 million in 2003, and persons injured in these crashes continues to steadily decline as well. This reduction is due in part to the national campaigns aimed at increasing safety belt use and reduci...

Pay-Per-Mile Auto Insurance
2007-07-08 07:02:00
With gas prices heading higher each year, many people are looking for resourceful ways to save on fuel, such as taking the bus, the train, riding a bike or car-pooling to work. Yet even with these money-saving tactics, drivers are still paying for full auto insurance coverage on their vehicles. As we all know, there are some corners that just can't be cut. Or so we think! Many auto insurance companies are starting to consider a new insurance program that would offer consumers a discounted rate for reduced car usage. In fact, some insurance providers are already offering trial programs. One big supporter of this new program is the Environmental Defense, anorganization currently promoting a Pay-As-You-Drive Insurance (PAYD) program to auto insurance companies throughout the United States. This innovative concept would link insurance policies to an odometer rather than just a renewal date on the calendar.According to the Environmental Defense, PAYD would not only help save consumers mon...

Hamilton takes the pole position at Silverstone
2007-07-08 06:42:00
Lewis Hamilton continued to serve it up for his thousands of fans at Silverstone on Saturday afternoon, by grabbing pole position from Kimi Raikkonen in the dying moments of qualifying.First it had been McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso who stole the initiative with 1m 20.147s, the only lead runner to opt for Bridgestone?s harder tyre, as Felipe Massa?s effort for Ferrari came up short at 1m 20.265s.Then Raikkonen came speeding out of Luffield, only to run wide at Woodcote; still his effort was enough to stop the clocks at 1m 20.099s to put the Ferrari on pole. While he was doing that, however, Hamilton was setting the fastest time in sector two, and as the McLaren sped across the line the 22 year-old Englishman pushed ahead with 1m 19.997s, giving him the prime starting position for his first-ever British Grand Prix. It was fairy tale stuff, and father Anthony?s delight was all too plain to see.Behind them, BMW Sauber sprang back into their usual position after appearing to struggl...

Ferrari seem strong again at Silverstone
2007-07-07 05:07:00
Ferrari may have been beaten to the head of the timesheets this morning, but this afternoon at a blustery Silverstone circuit Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa dominated the second 90-minute practice session.Raikkonen led the way with a best lap of 1:20.639s, just under half a second clear of Massa. Both drivers had small issues, with Raikkonen in particular understeering off at Copse twice as he put in long runs on worn tyres. Massa also had a grassy moment as he took too much kerbing at Becketts and this put him offline into Chapel. Like Raikkonen, it was fairly insignificant and between them they put in a good number of laps and enjoy a big advantage over their main rival.Ralf Schumacher was an impressive third fastest in his Toyota with an identical lap time to Lewis Hamilton in the leading McLaren Mercedes. Schumacher was on the pace at the very start of the session and seemed to hit problems with his TF107 after half an hour. After some time out of the car, the German was able t...

8 Things You Should Know About Auto Insurance
2007-07-07 05:03:00
Dealing with the ins and outs of auto insurance can be as tricky and confusing as trying to untie the Gordian knot. Although we can`t help you with the knotty Gordian problem, the following recommendations could help you figure out some of the more complicated points of auto insurance.1) Determine appropriate coverage.Help control the price you pay, just ask American Insurance Association executive Dave Snyder. For example, Snyder notes that half of your auto insurance bill covers liability and "that has to do with how you are going to use the vehicle, such as for commuting to work and your driving record. If you`ve got a clean driving record, you figure to pay less for insurance than you would if you had a speeding ticket on your record. You can control the other half of your premium which covers damage or loss to your vehicle, comprehensive and collision coverage."2) Shop around for insurance."In most states," Snyder reports, "there are hundreds of insurers competing for business,...

Seat Belts Make Auto Safety a Snap
2007-07-07 04:57:00

Seat belts of course ? probably the single most important tool you have to keep safe while driving.Seat belt stats at a glanceAccidents do happen, and chances are you`ll be involved with one or more in your lifetime. This is compared to the 44% of occupants who were not wearing seat belts and were killed during daytime hours in `05.Sobering statistics, no doubt. The good news is the NHTSA reports 77% of passenger vehicle occupants who were in a serious crash and were wearing seat belts survived. The Consequences of Not Having Auto Insurance
2007-07-07 04:54:00
When young adults graduate college they have aspirations of starting their first "real world" job, getting their own place and buying a brand new car - one that does not need a screwdriver to start. However, college students are also graduating with much more than just a college degree and a dream, they are graduating with a substantial amount of debt. In fact, many students graduate with an average of $3,262 in credit card debt - 10 percent of that group owing more than $7,000 in credit card charges.Students forget to factor in other life costs, such as health care, 401K deductions, income taxes, car payments, auto insurance, rent, utility bills, student loans, credit card bills and food expenses into their monthly budget. "After you graduate and land your first job, you do not think about having to pay for all of these expenses," stated a graduate from Ohio University. "Unfortunately, reality sets in pretty fast and you realize you do not have the money to make ends meet - it is a...

Text by Hans G. Lehmann Copyright Lehmann Photo Syndication edited May 3, 2007Biting dustHere are latest photos of the upcoming Ferr ari F 430 Challenge Stradale. They were taken in the south of Europe during off road testing on a remote gravel road in the countryside. The two super sports cars were taken to the extreme in this long lasting test in the dust . The sports car is Ferrari's answer to Porsche's RS-models, and both of them use almost the same recipe. While Porsche makes the RS-models lighter but keep the same horsepower as the base GT3, Ferrari gives the CS not just a lighter body but also some more power .The standard F430 delivers 490 bhp and the Stradale is believed to give away at least 520 bhp and about 100 kg less weight. The biggest visible change are the exhaust pipes that have moved up a bit. Due to safety regulations around the world the door windows are not made of plastic anymore like on the 360 CS and the wheels have 5 normal bolts instead of one centre bolt...
