Chevy Volt Vehicle Line Engineer on the Reduced Gas Storage Capacity
2008-04-14 13:02:00 Our last discussion regarding GMs decision to reduce the size of on-board gasoline storage was very productive. We stayed on topic, which was very helpful. Most comments were positive, although there were certainly some who were unhappy about it. I pointed out our discussion to Tony Posawatz who is GM’s Chevy Volt/E-Flex vehicle line ... GM Has Given the Volt Team a Blank Check
2008-04-13 15:19:00 I’ve tried to find out how much the E-Flex/Volt program is costing GM, I’ve asked the top VPs. They are only willing to say that they know but generally do not disclose those numbers publicly. The Wall Street Journal has previously reported nearly $1 Billion is being spent, but that is unverified. When talking ... More About: Design , Financial , Team , Check , Blank
U.S. Nanowire Lithium-ion Battery Expert Gets a $10 Million Grant?From Saud
2008-04-12 16:18:00 One of the most popular posts on this site was actually not about the Chevy Volt, but an interview I did with Dr. Yi Cui of Stanford University. He had developed a silicon nanowire anode for lithium-ion batteries. A result of his unique chemistry were experimental cells that could store 10 times the energy of ... Volt Gas Tank Shrunk - Maximum Range Reduced
2008-04-11 14:04:00 When the Chevy Volt concept was first introduced it included a pair of 6 gallon tanks. At 50 mpg (under ICE range extension mode) this resulted in the car having an overall 640 mile maximum range. Over time, as engineers have developed the car’s final internal layout, as per Volt lead engineer Andrew Farah, it became ... More About: Engineering , Tank , Range
More from Bob Lutz on the Volt Roll-out Plan
2008-04-10 21:34:00 In a previous post we discussed Bob Lutz ’ statement that the Volt may first go to California, Florida, Washington DC, and New York. There was and still is a great discussion which ensued. One of dozens of interesting comments echoed by several was that perhaps it doesn’t matter as much where the Volts start rolling out, ... My Fox Business Network TV Interview
2008-04-10 02:47:00 I had the experience of being interviewed by Degan McDowell on the Fox Business Network on Monday. I continue to be amazed at how much exposure this site is getting, and the opportunity to discuss the Volt on mainstream national media was quite exciting. After all, one of the main objectives of this site is to spread ... More About: Video , Interview , Business network
New York Now Added Among First Places to Get Chevy Volts
2008-04-09 13:49:00 In a previous post about production roll-out, we heard from Bob Lutz that GM was considering an initial limited roll-out, first to California, next to Washington D.C., and finally Florida. I for one, being a New York er, was little disappointed about that. Mr Lutz, according to this excerpt from the Detroit Press seems to now have rolled ... More About: Places , Timeline , Production
E-Flex/Chevy Volt Battery Lab Tour and Update
2008-04-08 12:00:00 I had the chance to tour the Chevy Volt battery lab and hear presentations by Lance Turner and Roland Matthe, battery engineers. This was actually my second trip there (see prior post). Lance showed us a sample of the LG/CPI pack running a series of driving cycles including the aggressive US06. The first pack has been ... Production Volt Exterior Design and Appearance: When Will We See it All?
2008-04-07 03:13:00 One of the top questions people ask is, "When will the final production Volt design be shown?" I just toured GM’s Chevy Volt E-Flex Design studio. First let me be clear, GM is not showing anyone what the final production vehicle fully looks like yet. I also spent considerable time talking to Bob Boniface, the ... Higher Resolution Chevy Volt Spy Photo 1/3 Camouflage Model
2008-04-06 02:48:00 I was able to get in touch with the photographer who caught the video, reporter Jeffery Gilbert. I found out that GM actually had given him permission to take that video. As such he afforded me with the highest resolution video available, from which is the clip above. He took it with a ... More About: Photo , General , Model , Higher , Camouflage

Chevy Volt Interior Spy Photo
2008-04-05 21:49:00 Someone took a picture of the Volt’s interior sketch (to the left). As I saw it firsthand, I can tell you it is indeed accurate, and is essentially finalized. As per interior designer Tim Crieg, what is seen on this picture will be indistinguishable from the final product although subtle features could change. ... 2008-04-05 16:04:00 One of the most commonly asked questions about the Volt is when will we see the final design. The last post shows a clip of the 1/3 scale model I saw in the wind tunnel. Fully Operational 40 Mile Range Chevy Volt Prototype to Hit Road This Month
2008-04-04 07:30:00 During our Chevy Volt media day, myself and other journalists were given a whirlwind tour of the E-Flex battery lab. Hybrid Director Mickey Bly briefed us on the current mule (test car) status. First, there have been four mules operational for the past 6 months. We actually got to see one on a lift, ... The Chevy Volt Interior and How it Will Start
2008-04-03 22:11:00 It has been a whirlwind day through the Volt battery lab, wind tunnel, VR studio, and design studio. Lots of information to get out there. Considering I was in the accompaniment of 80 other journalists, expect a flurry of articles from many sources. The first new thing I wanted to share was what we were told about how the Chevy Volt will start. First of all, the design freeze has essentially been reached. the exploration phase is over and only minimal changes could take place from now on. I saw a large photo of the finalized interior, and it is beautiful. Lines will sweep out from the center display, and will give a spacious and comfortable experience. It is futuristic, high-tech, and speaks eloquently to the electrical nature of the car. To that end the car will start uniquely. There will be no key or ignition! You will have a fob, and the car will recognize you as you approach, it will give forth visual and audio signals, "come to life" as designer Tim Creig says.... 2008-04-03 04:02:00 I arrived OK in Michigan, and on this first night had the chance to speak to a wide range of people involved in the Chevy Volt. At tonight’s reception, I caught up with Frank Weber, the Volt’s vehicle line executive. At Volt Nation he had mentioned that the Volt will have a smart charging capacity, meaning ... Chevy Volt Media Day
2008-04-02 07:01:00 One of the greatest opportunities I have been afforded in running this site, is to occasionally see the internal processes of the Volt’s development firsthand. To that end, GM has once again invited me out to their Tech Center in Warren Michigan. I won’t be alone, but in the accompaniment of several journalists. I don’t know ... Should the Volt have Speakers Inside and Outside to Simulate Engine Sound?
2008-04-01 07:00:00 An interesting engineering consideration in building electric cars is the sound they will make. People are used to cars making noise, both inside and outside, and indeed some enthusiasts rejoice at such engine sound. Also certain groups, such as the blind may rely on engine noise to alert them. Electric drive cars like the Volt will be ... More About: General , Sound , Engine , Speakers , Inside
