Portfolio.com gets the inside scoop?
2008-05-26 08:17:00 From the article: “At privately owned Chrysler , Nardelli no longer has to concern himself with annual meetings or public shareholders, and he can make hard decisions quickly. ?As the first major automaker to be privately operated in more than 50 years, we have an ideal structure for the work we have to do,? he says via email while traveling in Asia. Before Cerberus bought 80.1 percent of Chrysler last summer, Chrysler had spent a disastrous decade as a division of Germany?s Daimler, which retains the other 19.9 percent. But Nardelli has moved fast?scaling back production, eliminating 10,000 jobs (on top of 13,000 layoffs before he showed up), and killing such slow-selling models as the Dodge Magnum and the Chrysler Crossfire, Pacifica, and PT Cruiser convertible. ?We took 100,000 units out of our fourth-quarter production, and we did it in a seven-minute phone call,? says Jim Press, vice chairman and president. “ Of course, Nardelli?s take-no-prisoners attitude will inva... Surge In Self Drive Holidays Raises Insurance Questions
2008-05-25 23:15:00 Whether it's the hope of avoiding the stress of airport queues, or an effort to take a greener approach to travel, more people in the UK are likely to opt for a driving holiday this year.According to research from American Express, one in ten Brits are considering taking their family on a driving holiday in Europe, while 32 per cent are thinking about a caravanning holiday and 27 per cent may take a camping holiday if they can get there by car. While this form of travel may offer increased peace of mind, it raises important issues about car insurance.Ensuring you have the correct level of car insurance in place when travelling in Europe is crucial. Many of the UK's leading insurers advertise European cover as part of their policies - but in many cases this level of cover is downgraded. The likes of Barclays, Direct Line, esure and Swiftcover will only grant drivers third party coverage when travelling overseas. If you have comprehensive cover in the UK and want this to be maintaine... Ferrari Front Row in Monaco
2008-05-24 23:23:00 Despite rain-slicked streets around Monaco this morning, the sunshine did its job to dry and warm the circuit before the 750-hp machines made their qualifying runs. Though the McLaren-Mercedes cars of Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen looked to be the cars to beat following Thursday and Friday practices, it was the Ferrari of Felipe Massa that grabbed pole with a 1:15.787, just pipping his teammate Kimi Raikkonen for the coveted spot. The Ferrari front row is a surprise and relegates the McLarens to the three and four spots, though it’s quite possible Hamilton made his attempt with more fuel on board, a strategy that could play out in his favor come Sunday. BMW-Sauber must consider its qualifying efforts a disappointment. A red flag following David Coulthard’s crash robbed Nick Heidfeld of a shot at the top 10. As a result, the German failed to make it out of the second (of three) qualifying sessions, which meant he couldn’t be any higher in the grid than 11t... More About: Front , Front Row
Finding Genuine Oldsmobile Parts is Easy By Anthony Fontanelle
2008-05-24 15:03:00 More than a hundred years. That’s how long Oldsmobile has been part of the automotive market and that’s how long the brand has managed to reach out to the industry’s more picky market base. Oldsmobile have provided excellent selections of reliable vehicles. However, as the cliché goes, all good things always come to an end. Oldsmobile finally left the market in 2004 and in its 106 years of service, the brand has produced over 35.2 million cars. Oldsmobile may have stopped producing vehicles but its legacy lives on for you can still see Oldsmobile vehicles plying the streets. While Oldsmobile has stopped its production, certain questions will logically come up in certain discussions. How can Oldsmobile owners maintain their vehicles? To be more precise, where will Oldsmobile fans run in case replacement Oldsmobile parts may be needed? As the extension of General Motor’s fine automotive craftsmanship, Oldsmobile vehicles take pride in their assembly of car parts. Every component is as... When and When Not to Ride in a Limo By Maraya Mullen
2008-05-24 14:25:00 With companies offering cheap limousine service in LA, Brazil, France, Manila and every corner of the globe sprouting up like wild mushrooms, renting limousines has never been easier. It’s so easy in fact, that many tend to make the mistake of renting a limousine for every event they attend, irregardless of the fact that in many occasions, they are already breaching the rules of tact and propriety. To avoid committing etiquette faux pas (and being branded tacky), here is a brief guide to help you determine when and when not to ride a limo: Do ride a limo if you and your friends plan to have a fun night out on town. The vehicle is without a doubt the perfect vehicle to use when you and your friends decide to paint the town red. With its spacious interior and fun accessories (mini bar, DVD players, plasma TVs), even the act of driving from one hot nightspot to another becomes a party in itself. And because it seats more people than the ordinary SUV o sedan, there is no need to drive in ... More About: Interesting , Ride , Limo
Principles of the Principality
2008-05-24 12:44:00 Monaco. The name itself–the very place–invokes visions of royalty and glamour, of deep blue sea and deeper pockets of green. For fans of Formula One, Monaco means even more. It means Alberto Ascari and his 1955 plunge into the Harbor. It means Graham Hill and his five victories, Ayrton Senna and his six. With its undulating, narrow street course, Monaco is less a race than it is a test of men against themselves. The curbs are unforgiving, the Armco disasterous. Anyone who’s watched even a single Monaco GP knows that passing is nearly impossible, unfortunately, which generally makes for incredibly dull processions. Except for those rare occasions when F1’s brazen drivers seize an opening and make their moves stick. Or, alternatively, when it rains. It poured in 1996, and attrition led to just three cars finishing. This weekend’s GP marks the 600th for the venerable Frank Williams, whose eponymously named team has claimed 113 victories, seven driver’... More About: Principles

$7 per Gallon Gas Coming ?
2008-05-24 03:49:00 At least that's what some specialists believe. The general opinion is that if oil prices rise to $200 like some analysts believe [they] could, gas prices would reach about $7 per gallon. On Wednesday, a new record has been set, a $134 barrel. The rise in the oil price has been attributed to worries about supply and the predictions are quite pessimistic. Goldman Sachs believes that a barrel could fetch $200 by 2010, but that statement was issues two weeks ago. Many specialists now believe that a $200 barrel price might come even sooner and it will be somewhat expected. Others advise that the oil market is very unstable and once the summer passes, we might see a small drop in the gas prices. Since some of the BMWBlog folks live in the Chicagoland area, for the past week, we have seen some incredible high gas prices that just a few years ago, we thought they would be atrocious. A premium gallon of gasoline was selling for $4.65 at gas stations near Downtown Chicago. As...
CAFE regulations to cost Big 3 double that of Japanese automakers
2008-05-24 03:34:00 CAFE regulations to cost Big 3 double that of Japanese automakers While newly passed CAFE regulations will require all automakers to average 31.6 mpg fleet-wide by 2015, the new standards will have a greater impact on domestic automakers, a new report finds. The Big Three will have to pay about twice as much as their Japanese counterparts to comply with the new regulations. In all, it is expected that the Detroit 3 will pay about $30.6 billion — including $15 billion by General Motors alone — to bring their fleets inline with the new regulations, according to Automotive News. But because Japanese automakers already produce more efficient vehicles, it will only cost them about $14.85 billion to meet the new standards. The short lead time will also play into the expense associated with making more efficient vehicles. "That's not even really allowing for a full model change from where we are today," Rebecca Lindland, a Global Insight auto analyst, told... More About: In the News , Double , Cost , Regulations

UAW strike at American Axle costs GM big
2008-05-24 00:52:00 UAW strike at American Axle costs GM big American Axle has finally ended its labor dispute with the UAW, but it is only now becoming clear how greatly the three-month strike affected General Motors. In all, the UAW strike against American Axle cost the Detroit-based automaker $2.82 billion. During the first quarter of '08, the strike cost the auto giant $800 million, with losses in the second quarter tacking on another $1.8 billion, according to Automotive News. Add in the $215 million GM pledged to American Axle to end the strike — plus a few other odds and ends — and you get the grand total of $2.82 billion. GM expects to regain only a fraction of the production it lost because of the strike this year. In the second quarter alone, GM lost about 330,000 production units. The UAW's strikes at GM plants in Kansas City and near Lancing, Michigan will likely cost the automaker another $200 million in lost production. More About: In the News , Strike , Costs
Ford truck diesel engine supplier to idle plant
2008-05-24 00:43:00 Ford truck diesel engine supplier to idle plant The Indianapolis-based International Truck and Engine Corp. plant that supplies diesel engines for Ford's F-250, F-350 and F-450 and Super Duty truck will temporarily close, due to the automaker scaling back production of the full-size trucks. Yesterday, Ford announced even more cuts, though those did not have any bearing on the engine supplier's closure, which starts today. The supplier was already due to close for maintenance in the first two weeks of July, according to company spokesperson Roy Wiley in an Automotive News report. While it's not known if the supplier will take the time to perform the maintenance now and remain open in July, it is doubtful, as the decision would be a last-minute one. The plant supplies Ford's Louisville, Kentucky truck plant, which builds the F-series pickup trucks. More About: Ford , Diesel , In the News
Hidden Admin Costs Raise Price Of Car Insurance
2008-05-24 00:36:00 Motorists are being hit by large 'sneak' fees for small administrative tasks on their car insurance policies, according to a study by Uswitch.com. 14 million drivers are paying out further costs to their insurers, even when there is no change to the amount of their premiums, simply for minor paperwork changes. The website estimates that this practice earns insurers 330 million per year. There are some administrative changes which will affect the cost of premiums, such as moving from a safe neighborhood to a more dangerous one. But consumers are outraged at fees levied solely to cover administrative costs.Current mid-term charges include a fee of 25 for a change of address and 22 for duplicate documents, a price that many feel disproportionately high for the actual amount of work involved. Ashton Berkhauer of Uswitch.com has called for fixed rates across the board so that there is greater transparency: 'Consumers need to know where they stand and the easiest way to do this is for t... Toyota to increase overtime pay
2008-05-24 00:30:00 Toyota to increase overtime pay Life can be tough at the top. General Motors learned that lesson in the '80s and '90s, and Toyota is now going through a similar learning curve. The Japanese automaker's recalls are at record highs, but Toyota will try to rein in quality issues through a boost in overtime pay. In Japan, Toyota workers regularly participate in what is known as "QC Circle," short for quality control circle. QC Circle sessions generally take place after work and are intended to get ideas from workers on how to improve Toyota's overall quality and efficiency. However, even though the sessions take place after hours, Toyota workers have been limited to two overtime hours per month for the sessions. But after a new court ruling, Toyota will begin fully compensating its workers for the sessions, beginning next month. The court ruling stemmed from the death of a 30-year old Toyota worker. The middle-manager was in charge of checking car body d... More About: Toyota , In the News , Overtime
Thieves Target Catalytic Converters
2008-05-24 00:30:00 Car stereos and valuables left on display are no longer the only 'hot property' for thieves - now they want your catalytic converters too.Yes Insurance has reported a large increase in the number of catalytic converter thefts which have led to car insurance claims. According to the insurer, converters are popular with thieves because they are so expensive and contain rare metals such as platinum which have rocketed in value recently. It is believed a new catalytic converter can typically be sold for around 1,000.Owners of 4x4 vehicles have been warned to be particularly wary. They are considered 'easy targets' because it's straightforward to access the exhaust system and there is no need to use a car jack.If you fall victim to a catalytic converter theft you'll need to inform your car insurance provider as soon as possible - but unfortunately making a claim may mean sacrificing your no-claims bonus. As a result, drivers should take steps to avoid having their converters stolen ... Third Party Auto Insurance - Easy Guide To Choosing Your Insurer
2008-05-24 00:19:00 Having the correct auto insurance is essential. I do not think I have to list the many benefits it entails, because they are very obvious. You might not be the best driver in the world (I know I am not), but possessing a fine, wide coverage will save you from countless headaches. You might have never had a car accident, and I really hope you never do, but you are not exempt from it either. In this article we will take a look at the basic concepts of third party only insurance (TPO) and at some tips on how to choose the correct insurer (for any insurance type).Third Party Auto Insurance This type of insurance covers liabilities to third parties (as the name pointedly suggests). It covers, among other things, liability for injuries to people, liability for damage to private property, liability for damage caused by a trailer attached to the car, etc.It is also possible to get a third party theft or fire policy, which will apply in case your vehicle sets on fire or happens to be stolen.Ho... 2008-05-24 00:17:00 Anything you can do I can do better: 2009 Aston Martin DB9 gets boost in power, other upgrades Not to be outdone by the improvements to the "lesser" V8 Vantage, Aston Martin has announced its upgraded DB9 for the 2009 model year. As with the 2009 V8 Vantage, changes are subtle but promise to make for a better all-around car. Like the V8 Vantage, the DB9 will be getting a boost beneath its bonnet. The 6.0L V12 remains, but power gets a bump from 450 horsepower to 470, with torque figures checking in at 442 lb-ft. The new gusto can whoosh the DB9 from naught to sixty in 4.6, on its way to a top speed of 190 mph. Handling should also be improved for 2009, thanks to a revised chassis and an upgraded suspension. Also like the V8 Vantage, the DB9 will receive a new center console and switchgear — which is finished in iridium silver — and will get a new Emotion Control Unit (ECU). Exterior changes include new side-view mirrors, a revised grille and update... More About: In the News , Boost
Who Offers The Cheapest Car Insurance?
2008-05-24 00:10:00 The car insurance market is arguably at its most competitive point in history with the emergence of a cluster of comparison websites driving premiums down and forcing direct competition between insurers. Some comparison tools compare quotes from more than 60 car insurance providers with one search. However, with so many to choose from, which provider comes out the cheapest?According to new statistics from a comparison website, Swiftcover and Kwik-Fit are the most consistently competitive insurers with average premiums of just under 277. This marks a huge leap up the table for Kwik-Fit which finished twelfth last year in the analysis of quotes - Swiftcover meanwhile has maintained its position at the top of the rankings. This increased competition offers a rare piece of good news for motorists reeling from ever-rising petrol prices. The fact that Kwik-Fit and Swiftcover lead the way is reflective of the importance of online shopping. Smaller online insurers can be more competitive with... The more things change, the more they stay the same: 2009 Mercedes-Benz G-C
2008-05-23 07:27:00 The more things change, the more they stay the same: 2009 Mercedes -Benz G-Class Some things just get finer with age — wine, cheese and Mercedes' G-Class. The tank-like G-Class debuted way back in 1979, and hasn't seen much in the way of updates since then. For 2009, Mercedes will stay the course with a very lightly updated G-Class SUV. From the outside, not much on the 2009 G-Class will change. Mercedes-Benz has updated the off-roader's face with a new corporate grille, and updated wheels will help you differentiate your rig from your neighbor's lesser 2008 model. However, the G-Class will see some major revisions underhood. The Merc's 5.0L V8 will see a horsepower bump from 292 all the way up to 382 — a 90 horse improvement. Torque will also be improved from 336 lb-ft to 391. The AMG version of the G-Class will see a modest 7 horsepower increase, totaling an even 500. Despite the improvements, we're willing to bet the G-Class' best ... More About: Mercedes Benz , In the News , Change
Lexus brand to get at least two, not one, unique hybrids
2008-05-23 04:42:00 Lexus brand to get at least two, not one, unique hybrids Last month, news came of Toyota's Lexus brand getting a Prius-based hybrid vehicle when the next generation car breaks cover some time in 2010. Now, the latest reports have the automaker also mulling over at least one more hybrid vehicle that won?t look like anything else in the maker's current range, this one possibly a crossover. If true, Toyota would maintain its position as a pioneer in the hybrid vehicle industry. The Prius-based car would have unique styling inside and out, and be priced well north of its Toyota-badged donor, at above $30,000. It may also use lithium-ion batteries, unlike the current and probably next-generation Prius' nickel-metal hydride batteries, according to Inside Line, with the inline-four cylinder gasoline engines in either displacing 1.8 liters. The crossover could very well use the same powertrain, as all three cars are to be underpinned by Toyota's midsize MC platform,... More About: Lexus , Hybrids , In the News , Unique , Brand

2008-05-23 04:17:00 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR to hit U.S. dealers in June Mitsubishi has announced that its range-topping 2008 Lancer Evolution MR will begin rolling into U.S. showrooms this June. The Lancer Evolution MR promises to be slightly more refined than the Lancer Evolution GSR, but will still offer world-class performance. The MR comes with more standard features than the "base" GSR — such as Mitsubishi's six-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission — but that added technology will come at a price. The MR will retail from $38,290. Throw in an optional technology package — which includes a 30GB hard drive navigation system with music server, 650-watt Rockford-Fosgate Premium Sound System, pre-paid Sirius Satellite Radio capability and FAST Key entry — and the MR's price balloons to $40,840. New spy photos of the next generation BMW 5 Series
2008-05-23 01:15:00 Once again, the fellows at CarMagazine UK bring some "goodies" to the bimmer world. The 2009 BMW 5 Series has been spotted doing some laps around the Nurburgring track. The car is still heavily camouflaged, but for a change, we get to see some different photos than the ones we have seen before of the test mule being driven around Munich. Unfortunately, the photos are not revealing at all, so the best we can deduct from them is the large kidney grill that apparently will be sported on this new model. Hopefully the next weeks will bring us some better spy photos where we can see exactly what BMW has been hiding from us for so long. More articles from this author:2008-05-23 00:36:00 The old ways of finding car insurance are getting less and less efficient everyday, the most reliable way of finding quotes is to go online and get multiple quotes and then compare. There a few tips I can give you to make finding the right insurance a little bit easier.1- Find a quality website, the type of website you choose will either make things a lot more difficult or make things very stream line and quick. A website should have a simple interface that either requires your state or zip code, once you put that info in you should be given the best results for your area.2- Once you have found your site you need to multiple quotes, get at least 3. When comparing the policies you need to compare the price and what is covered.
