Survival is still the name of the game at Bristol.
2008-03-18 07:49:00 When the subject of Bristol racing comes up among racing fans, the react seems to be very surprising since NASCAR and the Bristol Motor Speedway both introduced two new eliminates into the racing, the first one coming from NASCAR being there new Car of Tomorrow that debuted at this very race last year under heavy criticism, the second was introduced last fall by Bristol Motor Speedway themselves, the new variable banking with a smoother surface. Both have resulted in fans asking what happened to the old Bristol, why change Bristol? When I look back at the previous Bristol races that most fans remember (1992 – 2007), the first description that comes to mind is a one grove racetrack that in order to pass, the driver would have to almost and in some case bump the car in front and move them out of the way, if you went into the higher grove, you got freight trained to back and at Bristol, that doesn’t take much… it’s a beating and banging race of survival that created instead exci... One year later for NASCAR's COT – Is it any better and what is the future
2008-03-14 07:17:00 At this time last year, drivers, teams, owners, media and the fans were all talking about what was about to be introduced, the controversial Car of Tomorrow, it was NASCAR’s answer to controlling the series better including limiting changes that crew chiefs could make to their cars and to save the teams money, having the same car run on all four types of racetrack, so what would be the future for this ugly, yet more safer car for the Cup Series?Last Year after the conclusion of the Bristol race, I wrote this:“Despite throwing the COT in the mix, I really didn’t see a difference between yesterday’s race and years past. The action was all the same, beating and banging for 500 laps and if at the end you were within the top 3 spots, you had a shot to win. Most of this race was dominated by Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin, even the #18 car got in on it by leading a couple of laps, but it all changed with first a fuel-pump gone bad and then Jimmie Johnson cutting down a tire and not ... Big Brother 9: America’s vote denied by house as James is evicted and vot
2008-03-13 04:04:00 I will get to my comments about the headline in a moment, however first, last week’s twist in the game turned couples into individuals and I’ve got to say, all hell has broke loose and with Ryan as the HOH to start of this new twist, the house has become divided, everyone needs to pick as side, however those sides changed regularly. For alliances, I see Ryan/Matt/Natalie/Adam/ vs. James /Chelisa/Sharon/Josh, Shelia is a tosh up in my eyes right now and let’s be honest, so is Natalie in some ways at least aligning with Matt.Even with watching the Big Brother Afterdark for 3 hours a night, it still is hard to say who is with who, and the players change almost daily or should I say nightly because when the sun goes down in this house, the true player does come out. I really didn’t know what to think about Ryan becoming head of household, he’s a wild card and he really doesn’t speck all that much, he really had his hands full dealing with his partner Allison (who is very inter... What is the biggest story to start the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season
2008-03-11 23:33:00 When it comes to picking the biggest story so far this season, that’s a tough one considering all that had gone on in just the first four races (Daytona, Monday in California, Las Vegas and Atlanta), so what are the top four?First, the manufacturer war between not just Chevrolet and Toyota, but Ford and Dodge has started to step up too. When Toyota signed Joe Gibbs Racing last year, it gave Toyota a huge piece of the puzzle that they were looking for to compete with the Detroit big three on a weekly basis and since the beginning of the season at Daytona, all four manufacturers – Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge and Toyota have all been running up front, first Dodge won at Daytona with Ryan Newman, then Ford won with Carl Edwards back-to-back races at California and Las Vegas and just this past weekend at the not so hot Atlanta, Kyle Busch in his Gibbs Racing Toyota gave Toyota there first Cup Series victory. A major part of Toyota’s success right now is Gibbs racing and Kyle Busch’s vi... More About: Story , Nascar , Sprint , Season
Everybody loses with NASCAR’s one size fits all penalties for COT infract
2008-03-06 06:01:00 So far in the record books, NASCAR has been running the COT for 16 races last season as an introduction to getting teams, drivers, fans and even NASCAR a custom to this new monster and now, as we sit three races into this season (19 COT races total), two things are for sure, 1) the racing has gotten better with the addition of the COT and 2) the penalties are just like the COT, one size fits all and on both sides of that, neither way works. The one size fits all for templates are giving no real identity to each manufacturer besides decals, however that isn’t the subject right now, it’s the penalties issue that seems to be popping up several times over the past several months, to date, NASCAR has handed down five penalties at least that I remember for COT related issues which basically means another that has to do with COT and they have all been for totally different “issues”, basically unrelated to each other. The penalties are basically all the same, the driver and owner are ... Revealed: Big Brother 9 ‘til death do you part turns to individuals as Al
2008-03-06 04:47:00 What a night for Big Brother 9 fans as at least for this fan, it couldn’t have come at a better time. The headline doesn’t give what happened justice, but does say a lot as Big Brother has turned the tables on houseguests and at just the right moment for one houseguest in particular.Just as the house had evicted Allison and Ryan in tonight’s live eviction, the horn (that the houseguests learned would sound in the coming weeks earlier this week) sounded and for one houseguest, it was heaven. The fans would learn just before the houseguests that the once ‘til death do you part twist was no more and each one was on their own, playing as individuals, perfect.Because of this, the night turned for Ryan (thank you, he didn’t do anything really wrong to get evicted) as he was saved and for the time beginning, Allison was evicted. The reveal itself showed new light on the game for the current houseguests as well as evicted ones. After Allison’s eviction, houseguests found themsel... More About: Death , Part , Til Death

Speedway Expo kicks off the 2008 Northeast racing season, but how was it?
2008-03-04 05:55:00 Image taken by me: Tony Stewart's 1980's Hearse at the Unique Whips booth. There isn’t a year that goes by that up here in the Northeast that we don’t have a Motorsports expo of some kind that kicks off the next racing season, in the past, the show was called Racearama, that was held mainly at the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts, last year it was the first annual Speedway Expo and this year, it was no different with the second annual Speedway Expo, however unlike the last year's, this past weekend’s wasn’t much to really talk about. Before we even got on the road, we already had a problem, we had to try and find two $5.00 off admission coupons at an Sunoco station that carried them and believe me when I say it, only Springfield stations might have them, no such luck, all out, you think considering we are on there mailing list and have a Sunoco credit card, it would be easier, nope, full admission for both my father and I, $15 each, plus $5 parking fee, great $35 dollars... Should the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana be converted into a high-banked, r
2008-02-27 07:36:00 When I first hear that Michael Waltrip made a suggestion to the president of the newly renamed Auto Club Speedway of Southern California with the idea of converting the racetrack to a restrictor-plate track by building up the corners to 33-35 degrees of banking and the fact that they are seriously considering it , I have to admit that at first I said “What, are you kinding me, another restrictor-plate, yeah we need that?”, however the more I thought about it, I began to understand one thing, that in fact that the speedway does need a new identity.Currently the racing at the Auto Club Speedway has been boring for the most part with the previous car, it’s not like Michigan racing, its long, drawn out caution free racing with the ending coming out to be a huge lead and in some cases a fuel economy race, so yeah, it does need a change. However I will say that this past Sunday night-Monday afternoon’s 500 mile race with the new COT car was better than in previous years, it was mo... More About: High

(Credit: Steven Field at Edelman - AP Photo/Shell Oil Company, Bob Riha, Jr.)In a world were more and more people are trying to achieve better fuel economy, its always cool to see that it is possible to achieve very high numbers in fuel economy especially in this case where California Polytechnic State University has achieved nearly 2,000 miles per gallon (1,902.7 gallons) and won the Shell Eco-marathon Americas challenge. This sure does gives the rest of hope that are cars are more capable of better fuel economy then just 18-25 mpg like the two cars in my family. From Autoblog Green: In the Hydrogen Group, Los Alt... Big Brother 9: ‘Til Death Do You Part – My Take on the first 18 days an
2008-02-25 02:18:00 What a different game this time around for the first winter edition, for the first time in Big Brother History, the houseguests are playing as couples and I have to say as a result of that, the action in the house has been hot and heavy with several fights that might not normally come about in a singles type of game. Basically you play as couples, compete in challenges as couple, vote as couples and interestedly enough, be evicted as couples. Personally while the couples twist is unique, it does pose some problems including the fact that the game only has 8 couples, one was evicted the first night, the second was evicted last week and the third will be evicted this Wednesday night, that’s 6 houseguests gone in three weeks and for a full season game, there on record pace. These couples were paired as CBS puts it, as sole mates, they matched up perfectly, well I really don’t think so, but you never know… What a pairing, when the game started:Alex and Amanda: Which were the week t... Was NASCAR’s penalty issued against Robby Gordon after Daytona fair?
2008-02-23 07:47:00 It’s a simple question and yet what a reaction that this penalty has received from fans, sponsors, drivers and people in the NASCAR community including t-shirts, banners, petition and more.So if you haven’t heard, this past Wednesday, NASCAR handed down a heavy penalty against Robby Gordon for an unapproved nose piece that was discovered on opening day during the inspection at Daytona, the penalty is 100 driver points and 100 owner points, the crew chief is suspended for 6 races, fined $100k and put on probation until December 31st.Robby Gordon is saying on his website that: This was an innocent mistake made by someone not even on my team. They accidentally supplied us the new Dodge noses that NASCAR hasn't yet approved because of what amounted to a clerical error. It was discovered during technical inspection and corrected before the race. It was not even close to being an intent to create some competitive advantage, and the mistake was not even made by my team. This penalty i... More About: Fair , Penalty
How would you rate the 50th running of the Daytona 500? How about Speedweek
2008-02-18 08:01:00 The entire Speedweeks at Daytona was one for the record books for the Cup Series in both a positive and a negative way. When speedweeks started off with the “One Big” on the Friday night before the Budweiser Shootout that involved Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch, I was asking why isn’t NASCAR parking Kurt Busch for the aftermath of him slamming into Stewart twice while entering pit road, however some including me were surprised the next Tuesday when NASCAR handed down a probation of 6-races for each driver, I was shocked. At that point I asked two questions, first being why was Stewart given a 6-race probation, he didn’t do anything that I noticed and second, only probation for Busch… I could understand maybe not parking him, but please. NASCAR wants the drivers to show more emotions and the way I look at is that what happened at Walkins Glen last season between Harvick and Montoya, the key there, they were outside of there cars and not punching each other, that I like, that’... Will the 2008 NASCAR season be a duel between Hendrick in Chevrolet vs Gibb
2008-02-16 01:46:00 Normally, I really wouldn’t want to make a prediction this bold on a season that really hasn’t started yet, however based on what I have seen in the past week and taking the last couple of years into account, I would have to say YES, the odds are in there favor. When you look at Speedweeks in Daytona as of right now (Friday night), before the two big races, the week has belonged to both of these manufacturers and teams in huge ways.Starting with the Sprint Cup Series, the Budweiser Shootout showed three things, first the racing so far with this new car is getting better, some including Dale Jr. have said that this car handles more like the cars of old, very loss… and in a lot of cases, that’s what we wanted right? Could be, the second, both the Chevrolet s and Toyotas mainly the Hendrick and Gibbs cars lead a lot of laps and for Gibbs, switching to Toyota really didn’t slow these guys down at all and yes I am surprised, but I shouldn’t be. Third, personally for me, Dale J... More About: Nascar , Season , Duel , 2008
So how did NASCARs new television package with FOX, TNT and ESPN/ABC do in
2008-02-13 14:06:00 Last season (2007) marked the first season for NASCAR’s new television package that featured three networks covering all 36 Nextel (Sprint in 2008) Cup Series races, first up was FOX that televised the first 13 races from the Daytona 500 to the 400 miler Dover race. The second network was TNT that televised the next 6 races which included the debut of TNT’s wide-open coverage that ment with difference of opinion. Finally, the third network to throw in to this television coverage was the return of ESPN and ABC that televised the final 17 races including the 10 race chase that was all on ABC.Now let’s be honest here, in all the time that FOX has been covering NASCAR, I have never really had a problem with there coverage. They could do without a couple of graphics on the screen and all three networks could change the look of the layout on screen, however nothing major with FOX, now I know why the win awards for there coverage.Moving straight through the first 13 races including o... 2008-02-12 05:06:00 I am proud to say that the short (for teams and drivers, but long for racing fans like me) off season is over as NASCAR has invaded Daytona International Speedway for NASCAR’s superbowl, Speedweeks leading up to the Daytona 500.You would think that not much has happened since the big race hasn’t even taken the green flag yet, however with most speedweeks, theres always a lot of action leading up to the race, in fact, on night one, we have already had the big one. It was last Friday night in the Budwiser Shootout practice session when it happened, Clint Bowyer trying to make a pass below Ryan Newman and they touch, sparking off a huge about 11 car wreck (give or take in number of cars) with of all drivers, sending both Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon among others to backup cars, however that was not the big one. The big one happened on the next round with Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart got together… the replay was interesting and both played a part considering it was only Shootout ... More About: Dale
What should the identity of NASCAR’s Nationwide (formally Busch) Series b
2008-02-09 23:54:00 The NASCAR Nationwide Series , NASCAR’s second major racing series, which in some cases is also referred to as a stepping series to the Cup Series. For the past year or so, I have been thinking about this subject and in turn reading just what fans, writers, drivers and even owners comments on this subject and after going to Loudon, NH (NHIS) (like I do every year) to watch the Busch Series in action, I believe that there is no doubt that the series needs a new identity not only because Busch is gone as title sponsor and is replaced with Nationwide, but in general, its still too much like the Cup series.First, would be in naming of series, when you look at NASCAR’s other two major series, they both have that non-changeable names, for example, NASCAR’s elite series is the Cup Series and that wouldn’t change even if the series sponsor does – The Winston Cup Series back before 2004, the Nextel Cup Series for the last couple of years and new for 2008, the Sprint Cup Series. Should fans be thinking about Jimmie Johnson winning a 3rd straight Cup Ser
2008-02-07 00:42:00 This past Monday on the season premiere of NASCAR Now, I couldn’t believe it when they asked “Will Jimmie Johnson win his third straight Cup Series Championship?” why? Why would you ask that, when did it become Richmond in September… This would be one of the last things I’m thinking about going into the new NASCAR season. What about the fact that the Budweiser Shootout is this Saturday night or that the Gatorade Duel is next Thursday or even the fact that the 50th running of the Daytona 500 is a week from Sunday, yeah what about those. So in light of that question, what might fans be thinking about going into the new season:First, Dale Earnhardt Jr. driving for Hendrick Motorsports with a new number, sponsors and mostly new team., the only things that stayed the same was his crew chief Eury Jr., a couple members of his crew and he’s driving a Chevrolet. As a Dale Jr. fan, I am hoping for a good season and that that Hendrick equipment that has won the last two championships... More About: Fans , Thinking , Straight , Winning

Making the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Better.
2008-02-02 19:30:00 When you look towards the future of the sport, a lot of issues has to be addressed and throughout last season, several people who have been in the sport for years came out about what should the future should behold, well from this racing fan (who has been a NASCAR since the early 1990’s – before Jeff Gordon came in to the (the Cup Series in 1992 at Atlanta), why not think about these suggestions…The Length of season, 34 to 37 races should be the max for the Sprint Cup Series and what we have now (36 races) is dead-on, no problems here. The Length of race, If we are talking race per race changes, start with Pocono going to 400 miles, however one idea could be 3 hour timed races (not counting red flag periods) for most races except the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, Coca-Cola 600, (would someone please return Darlington to labor day weekend) Southern 500. So what did $1 Million dollars get you at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson Car auct
2008-01-25 04:25:00 Over the last couple of years, enthusiants have seen a surge at the Barrett-Jackson in terms of prices and popularity, however while 2008 saw even bigger popularity, the hammer prices really didn’t come close to the records that one thought each would bring. It seems that the 2008 Barrett-Jackson prices were more along the lines of what most auction around the US would bring as well as some including the announcers called bargin prices. So after all of that, what did $1 Million dollars get you at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson and more so, who were the showstoppers and the star? For the 2008 Barrett-Jackson, $1 Million dollars would have bought you a lot more then in past years, going into the auction I had thought that there were two vehicles that would bring in the big dollar amounts, first, in the car industry, there is one name that is huge with power, Carroll Shelby, last year, his personal 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 “Super Snake” hammered down at a record-breaking $5 Million Dollars ,...

2008-01-19 18:03:00 NASCAR has confirmed that they are considering raising the age limit for Cup Series drivers from the NASCAR standard age 18, to age 21 (Read more…)“My Take”: Looking at the NASCAR age limit that is currently at age 18 for all three series (Truck Series, Nationwide Series and Cup Series) works fine were it is, however that’s not what needs to be changed in the requirements, what should be changed is the experiences level that a driver must have before entering the Cup Series. What do I mean by experience level, well, every driver regardless of what there past driving experience is whether it’s a former Formula winner or champion, an IRL champion, an Indy 500 winner or even a Rolex 24 winner should be required to be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of two (2) full years competing in either the Truck Series or the Nationwide (formerly Busch) Series period. How to update the NASCAR points system.
2008-01-11 06:15:00 With all of the talk in the media, the new media namely social groups and blogs, and among NASCAR fans about what should be changed in the upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season that is set to kick off next month (February) on the 17th with the 50th running of the Daytona 500, I began thinking about the points system and an article I wrote a little over a year ago that highlighted what I would like to see the current points system changed to look like and it has gotten some good feedback both here at Racedriven.com (original article) and over at my Racedriven Overdrive blog I had in 2006. However, with every article, there is still room for improvement and that is what I have done with adding some more tweaks that I picked up from the 2007 season. One of the biggest questions in NASCAR is how to update the current points system used in all three of NASCAR's top racing series including the NASCAR Sprint (formally Nextel) Cup Series. The idea of completely rebuilding the points syst... More About: System , Nascar , Update , Points

One Tree Hill finally returns
