Can you really afford not to check your auto insurance policy regularly?
2009-12-14 22:54:00
Every month, more and more American’s dread that one or two days where they have to take time out, sit down at a table typically with a computer in front of them and pay their bills. We all do it, whether your 16 years old, 21, 30, 45, 60 or 90 years old, we all do it and every month most of us say “Where can I save money?” Typically we look at the cable or satellite, telephone or even the food bill, but have you ever considered changing you auto insurance? When it comes to buying auto insurance, I’m not talking about cutting coverage, because that would be wrong and could land you into some trouble down the road if you have an accident, but I am talking about simply going online and doing some research, and you could save hundreds of dollars a year on your auto insurance and if you have a collector car, that is even bigger. Step 1: Find out what companies do business in your state. This is key because each state has their own policies on auto insurance. For example, Massa...

Kyle Busch jumps into the Truck Series by starting KBM.
2009-12-11 21:14:00
Earlier today live on SPEED, NASCAR’s bad boy and 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Kyle Busch announced that he is starting a two-truck team to compete full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2010. He will bring along legendary and 2009 NASCAR Truck Series champion crew chief Rick Ren to run the day to day operations. The driver lineup will include Tayler Malsam who will run full-time in the # 56 Toyota Tundra, while Brian Ickler and of course Kyle Busch will share driving duties in the #18 Miccosukee Resort & Gaming Toyota Tundra Truck. There is also a possibility the KBM will field a third team in 2010 with Johnny Benson if sponsorship can be found. As Kyle Busch continues to build his race shop in Mooresville, NC, he has purchased the #16 Xpress Motorsports Truck Series team and will use that race shop for now. The teams will have support from Joe Gibbs Racing to help with the possibility of running a third team I have to say that I’m surprised t...
What are the top 10 moments of the 2009 NASCAR season?
2009-12-09 04:50:00
Let’s face it, everything is about moments in the season, not the entire races, and so for that reason instead of doing the top 5 races of 2009 like so many have, I have decided that the top 10 NASCAR moments of 2009 would be a better fit and what moments we have had both on-track and off-track in all three NASCAR national series (NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series). 10. Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Juan Montoya gets caught speeding and has to do a drive through penalty, while going down pit road, Montoya tells NASCAR “Thank you NASCAR for screwing my day”. I still to this day believe that NASCAR didn’t really screw Juan Montoya and that his tack was set wrong or he plain went over the 5 mph buffer. 9. Copart 200 at Gateway (Truck Series): Matt Crafton first wrecks Todd Bodine in the late stages of the race going into turn 1, on the next restart, Crafton then wrecks Ron Hornaday Jr. in turn 1. After...

What are the top 5 NASCAR stories of the 2000s?
2009-12-07 18:22:00
Over the last decade, there have been so many big stories in NASCAR, so today I’m going to be talking about the top 5 biggest stories so far this decade. Where do we begin, well how about with one of the biggest shocking stories of that even I still think about today. 1. Death of Dale Earnhardt: On February 18, 2001, at the end of the Daytona 500 as his company DEI was about to win with Michael Waltrip and his son was finishing runner up, in a turn 4 crash, the sport lost one of the best drivers in NASCAR history, Dale Earnhardt. I’m thought about that day from time to time and it has always left me speechless, it’s like losing a member of your family. But I will say that following Dale’s death, NASCAR reacted by putting into place all of the safety that we have today including the Car of Tomorrow, the head and neck restraint and the safer walls. It was great to see that this October, NASCAR announced that Dale Earnhardt will be part of the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hal...

The Best and Worst of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series In 2009
2009-12-05 03:26:00
This past season will definitely be known for some of the best racing in the Truck Series that I have seen in years, however where were the fans, let alone the sponsors? Right now (2009) in the Truck Series, the racing has been heart-stopping most of the time, sure some races have seen runaway victories or two or a driver just dominate the race, but for the most part, Truck Series fans (what few there are) have seen amazing racing from Daytona in February to Homestead in Florida. Best of 2009 Some of the best depends upon who you are and more so who is your favorite driver. Ron Hornaday Jr. in the #33 KHI Chevrolet Truck has to be a stand out in the series. In 2009 he won his fourth NASCAR Truck Series championship fending off a hard charging Matt Crafton and Kyle Busch. Hornaday Jr. made history during this past season when he and his team won an impressive five consecutive races, starting at The Milwaukee Mile and extending through Memphis, Kentucky, ORP and down to Nashville an...

Have you ever used NASCAR Trackpass and/or TNT RaceBuddy?
2009-12-02 23:46:00
Let me start off with what we call a disclaimer. Just before the season finale for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Homestead-Miami Speedway, I was asked by a PR guy with NASCAR to do a NASCAR giveaway here on RaceDriven.com, the two prizes were a subscription to NASCAR Trackpass that was good for one year from activation and the second prize was a NASCAR Prize Pack that included several different things. For running the giveaway, I received both prizes. So with that said, what did I think of the NASCAR Trackpass experience? A few weeks ago during the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Ford 300, I activated the NASCAR Trackpass to use during the race and see what it was like and what an interesting experience it was to say the least. There were a few good points as well as a few bad points. But before I get into my experience, here’s what the NASCAR Trackpass has to offer: “View real time driver data positions with the leaderboard, updat...

2009-11-27 23:25:00
Denny Hamlin pays back Brad Keselowski, but Hamlin ends up looking like a rookie Welcome back ladies and gentlemen, about one week ago at Homestead-Miami Speedway, all three of NASCAR’s national series had their season finales on the 1.5 mile track that ended with its normal fireworks. But it’s been the last few weeks that still have NASCAR fans talking and wanting more after the action on the racetrack has heated up. All three series as a matter of fact have had their moments of anger and drama from Ron Hornaday Jr. and Todd Bodine getting wrecked by Matt Crafton in St. Louis where Crafton’s comment was “I ain’t scared” while Todd Bodine’s comment was “You can’t fix stupid”. Crafton spend the rest of the season playing brides made, finishing runner up in several races and the championship and dodging a few angry drivers. Of course also in the Truck Series was Ron Hornaday Jr. getting pushed around by Kyle Busch, but it was Texas that that battle had its moment...

The stage is set for NASCAR season finale in Homestead
2009-11-19 19:08:00
Well folks, it’s come down to this final race in all three of NASCAR’s national series (the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the Nationwide Series and the Sprint Cup Series) and there is still a lot on the line. In the Truck Series, it’s the owner’s championship that is still to decide between the top two in points. #33 Kevin Harvick Inc. with driver Ron Hornaday Jr. has a 60 point lead over second place #51 Billy Ballew Toyota driven this week by Kyle Busch. In the Nationwide Series, its not about the championship as Kyle Busch will clinch as soon as the green flag comes out, but one thing to keep your eye on in the Nationwide race, over the last two seasons, there has been a rivalry or a battle if you will going on between the Toyota drivers of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch vs. Brad Keselowski. Since I’m not only a fan of Brad Keselowski, but really don’t care for both Hamlin and Busch, you can see what side I am on here. Brad Keselowski believes that there is nothin...

NASCAR’s triple header in Homestead marks final race of 2009 and final ra
2009-11-17 02:29:00
This coming weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway will mark the season finale for all three of NASCAR’s major series, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the Nationwide Series and the Sprint Cup Series, but it will also mark the final race for many in their current positions, the end of an era if you will. 1. Michael Waltrip – Homestead will mark Michael Waltrip’s last race as a full-time driver. Michael will continue to be a driver in the future, but only on a part-time basis like the Daytona 500 and few more races in 2010. I wish Michael Waltrip well in not only his last ride as a full-time driver, but in MWR. 2. Martin Truex Jr. – After several seasons at what was called DEI, that is now EGR, Truex will be leaving the #1 car and Bass Pro Shop to move to Michael Waltrip Racing to drive the #56 NAPA Toyota. This is a good move for Martin Truex Jr.. 3. Pat Tryson – Homestead will mark the final time that Pat Tryson will crew chief for the #2 Kurt Busch at Penske Racing...

Speedlinking: Taylor Swift on SNL and CMA's, GM expanding, and NASCAR.
2009-11-13 21:04:00
Welcome to another edition of speedlinking. I have to admit, I love creating a speedlinking post, it spreads the word not about some interesting and/or helpfull articles that I am reading, but maybe sharing some other blogs that you didn't know about or haven't read in a while. One of the biggest headlines over the last week has been 19 year old Taylor Swift. Most readers of RaceDriven.com already know that I am a huge fan of Taylor Swift, so it should be no surprise that she is in here. I am also talking GM and NASCAR. 1. REPORT: GM to let rejected dealers apply for new franchises - the reason why I bring this up is I think General Motors is going the wrong way. They have shut out several people world wide with their taking Federal Bailout money and then finally doing bankruptcy and leaving us with their debt. I'm not going to go into specifics, but they have already stopped the sale of Opel, Saturn wasn't sold and it will fall it Pontiac instead. What are they doing, g...

The Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway teaches NASCAR media not to write i
2009-11-11 02:26:00
8 down, 2 to go, what should we be watching in Phoenix and Homestead for the Chase for the Sprint Cup? First, coming into Texas, the big story wasn’t Jamie McMurray winning a wild Amp Energy 500 at Talladega nor would he get a ride because of the victory but rather it was an ESPN report on during the week that said that JR Motor sports will sign Danica Patrick to a three deal to run somewhere around 13 races in the Nationwide Series, however the way I look at it here is, one, I will believe it when I see it. Two, we all know that the brand Danica Patrick will be big, but how will the on-track performance be. I’m not going to make any predictions on this one and it’s just a wait and see. The main story before the start of the race was Jimmie Johnson’s 184 point lead over second Mark Martin and 192 over Jeff Gordon with just 3 races to go. Some of the media had already written the chase for the Sprint Cup over, where calling for fixes, engraved Jimmie Johnson’s name on the ...

Frustration lives with the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2009 for me.
2009-11-08 20:22:00
I’ve been watching the NASCAR (now) Nationwide Series for years now and I have to say that this year (2009) will go down in history as one of the most frustrating seasons to watch period. Where do I begin and I can’t and won’t put all of the blame on NASCAR’s shoulders neither. The fact is, the problems are all around the series from the Cup Series drivers invading the series in every single race, the ESPN coverage focusing mainly on the Cup Series regulars and simply the domination of Toyota. Let me example, let’s start with the ESPN coverage. I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to people and work with what’s there, at the same time I am a firm believer in when it’s broke, fix it. One of the biggest reasons for the Nationwide Series is for bringing up drivers, getting them ready to run in the Cup series, but it’s also a series about putting on good racing and showcasing the regular drivers in the series. With ESPN, they have the general basis of covering the ...

Martinsville vs. Talladega: NASCAR style
2009-11-03 06:50:00
In the past two weekends, NASCAR has raced on one of the shortest racetracks that they go to Martinsville Speedway, a tight paperclip half-mile speedway where you will find some of the best short track racing on the NASCAR schedule. And the next weekend (this past Sunday) at the largest racetrack on the schedule, Talladega Superspeedway, a 2.66 mile high speed oval simply known as restrictor plate racing. Martinsville Speedway Last weekend at Martinsville Speedway, the site of the Tums Fast Relief 500 that saw some of the better side of racing in NASCAR. 500 laps around a tight paperclip half-mile speedway, short-track racing at its finest are what racing is all about whether it’s NASCAR or just a short track bullring all around the United States, Canada and beyond. Last weekend’s Tums 500 saw Juan Montoya roughing up several drivers including Jeff Gordon to make his way to front of the field. I like what Jeff Gordon said early on during the race after Montoya went by him, “...

2009-11-03 00:10:00
Over the last few weeks, team in all three NASCAR national series have been making preparations for the upcoming 2010 NASCAR season and especially in the Sprint Cup Series, changes are in full swing. Early today, Penske Racing announced that Brad Keselowski would get a jump start on 2010 and replace David Stremme in the #12 Dodge in the upcoming races at Texas, Phoenix and Homestead. (Penske Racing PR) I believe as a Brad Keselowski fan that this is going to be great opportunity for Brad to get some more seat time. Who knows, maybe this is exactly what the series needs in the final three races, Brad coming in and racing hard against some of his rivals Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and even Juan Montoya. Brad isn’t just going to move over, the last three races will be a learning experience. Also consider this, Brad has been driving Hendrick Motorsports equipment in both the #25 and the #09 (the #09 Chevy’s are Hendrick stuff), now he will be running Penske Dodge’s…he’s going t...

Health Care Reform and a Public Option: Yes or No?
2009-10-26 23:59:00
No Government Public Option, instead help each state run their own that is subsidized though a health care insurance company. One of the most talked about subjects in the United States right now is health care reform and here in the United States, it costs a lot of money to get health insurance let along dental. Now let me state the something right from the start, I don’t know too much about the current talks on health care reform going on in Washington D.C. right now, it’s only in what I hear in the media. However I have heard the talk about having a government run public option.I have to say out loud that I’m opposed to a government run public option. As a Massachusetts resident who is currently unemployed just like a lot of people right now, I was forced to use the Massachusetts run public health care insurance called Mass Health . I fill out the forms every now and then for status and it’s a good option and model for Massachusetts residents. I’m not the only one who uses...

Is the world big enough for both Facebook and Twitter?
2009-10-25 03:11:00
According to an article on Mashable that talks about the “The Web 2.0 Summit” in San Francisco, the Twitter CEO said “The world is big enough for Facebook and Twitter.”In reading that one quote, that got me thinking and while I’m not going to go into full details, I truly believe that he is right for now in the year 2009. The future is bright for social networking which includes blogging, lifestreaming, MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and more, at least in my eyes. While I will get into all of social networking in the future, today I am talking solely on Twitter and Facebook. As a webguy who uses the internet daily from looking for articles, news, information, connecting with friends, family, old high school classmates and just exploring, both services have their positives and negatives.I currently use both services, I have been using Twitter @RaceDriven for months now and Facebook (Brian Vermette) for two months now and both service yield differently to me.Twitter is a basic ser...

2009-10-15 00:48:00
Where were the fans at Auto Club Speedway in California for the NASCAR Cup Series Pepsi 500 race?Let’s state the obvious, NASCAR needs to be racing in Southern California, it is a huge market for them. However when it comes to putting on an event such as show, concert or in this case a doubleheader race weekend, it takes two thing to get fans to buy a ticket besides weather (and hot temps don’t help), a good product and a reasonable priced ticket or for some, a package deal. When it comes to a good product, some racetracks have it, while others just don’t. For me, short track racing and intermediate tracks for the most part have a good product as well as superspeedways in some fans eyes. When it comes to California Speedway (Auto Club Speedway in Southern California), the product for some fans including me aren’t there anymore. This is due to a few thing, one is the size of the speedway, a 2-mile D-Shaped Oval and the other one is the new COT car in the Cup Series and I will g...

2009-10-14 22:19:00
All day today, SPEED has been analyzing just who should the first five members of the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Like I said this past June when NASCAR unveiled the 25 nominees, when it comes to picking these five names, they have to be the best of the best and while most people will find that two names should be a lock, of course they would be 7-time champion Dale Earnhardt and 7-time champion Richard Petty , both would be perfect for the inaugural class just by their records in NASCAR, but the last three, those will be discussed at length. I believe it will be even more difficult to pick the second and third class into the Hall of Fame.Last June I choice my top 5 list of who should be in that inaugural class, first is Bill France Sr., he was the Co-founder and manager of NASCAR. Second is Dale Earnhardt Sr. One of the best drivers in NASCAR, 7-time Cup Series champion. Third is Richard Petty. Nobody should be saying that Richard doesn’t deserve to be in the first...

2009-10-12 04:11:00
So what did $500,000 dollars get you at Auto Auction?Over the past several years, enthusiasts have been invading all of the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auctions looking to buy their dream car. However with the tough economy right now that let’s face it will continue for years to come, I wondered just what some of those incredible automobiles would sell for in front of a huge bidding crowd.Over the past three nights, enthusiasts saw not bargain prices, but reasonable prices. The prices that people, yes even in this economy can afford and that is a good thing. For me, a car enthusiast, ever since I was five years old, I’ve loved cars from a cool Corvette, a 1987 Buick Grand National, a 1969 Ford Mustang , a 1955 Chevrolet Nomad, a 1971 Plymouth HemiCuda, to a 2008 Ford Mustang, a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro or a Shelby and watching people showcase cool cars on television definitely gets my attention. So after all of that, what did $500,000 dollars get you at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas...

So here is my top 5 issues in NASCAR that should to be address going forward and even though I don’t see NASCAR making wholesale changes in the future, it is a new era, new economy right now in the world and with everyone coming down to reality, it’s time for some change, step by step.”The top 5 list included: What can NASCAR do with the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series? What about the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Schedule? What about the owner’s points is getting out of hand? NASCAR needed to do something about the “exclusive part of ...

A 1963 Ford Galaxie sells for $110k at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson in Las Vega
2009-10-09 05:02:00
Well it isn't quite that time of the year yet for the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, but it is time for the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Las Vegas and here we are, a car guys dream. With the tough economy right now, I always wonder what a particular car like a restomod 1969 Chevrolet Camaro would go for or an original 1970 Plymouth HemiCuda would go for, however when this 1963 Ford Galaxie 4-door sedan went across the block, even the announcers didn't know what to make of it. They were really puzzled and I have to say so was I when this car sold for $110,000.Yes, two or three bidders bidded fearlessly on this car and one women just had to have this Galaxie, but why? At this moment for the love me I can't figure this one out as to why a car that most likely should have sold for $40k went all the way up to $110,000 ($121,000 total). The Galaxie pictured above and is described as: "This vehicle was redesigned to accompany Mick Kieffer, one of the nation's leading Barn...
NASCAR gets it wrong with telling non-Chase drivers to back off.
2009-10-08 00:16:00
Racing is all about pushing the limits and the #48 and #5 were and are doing just that.Welcome back ladies and gentlemen, over the past three weeks, NASCAR has been pushing the limits with several teams as well as its NASCAR fans and among the first three Chase for the Sprint Cup races has caught my eye in two areas that have just left me asking why they would do that. With New Hampshire two weeks ago in the record books with a good race on the magic mile that ended up being a battle right to the caution flag on the white flag laps that saw Mark Martin hold off hard charging Denny Hamlin and Juan Montoya to win the Sylvania 300 and extend his points lead, it was off to Dover. While Dover didn’t do the chase drivers any favors, the race itself ended up being a sleeper as Jimmie Johnson dominated to win the AAA 400 over him teammate and the point’s leader Mark Martin. However after the race was really where the story lied sort of, it all depended upon who you talked too or listened ...

2009-06-18 21:31:00
Welcome back ladies and gentleman, well I guess third time is a charm, the reason why I say that is this is the third time I have written on this Carl Long penalty from the first article I wrote here on Race Driven called “NASCAR: Should we expect that this record penalty against Carl Long will be the normal penalty for everybody?”, then at the beginning of the month (June 2009) after the NASCAR appeals board heard the penalty and only reduced the suspension to the Cup Series, I wrote on this for a second time in an article I called “NASCAR and the appeals board gets it wrong with the Carl Long penalty. So here we are again for the third and last installment because there’s no other options, since then after an unsuccessful appeal with the appeals board, Carl Long filed a final appeal with the Stock Car Racing commissioner Charles Strang and that final appeal was heard on Monday in Chicago, yesterday, the commissioner ruled and only reduced the suspension from 12-races to eigh...

2009-06-18 07:26:00
You always have to say, what happened and in this case, in both the Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway and the Truck Series race at Michigan, both races showed that even thou a driver dominates the race, the race is never over until the checkered flag is waved and you cross the finish line.Let’s start with the Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway, lost in all of the talk of GM cutting support to both the Truck Series and the Nationwide Series, there was an interesting race going on on-track for the Truck Series, however when Kyle Busch is leading and dominating the race, some NASCAR fans tend to change the channel, but I’ve learned that is not a good idea, because a race can change in just one lap and it sure did when a lap car racing on the middle to bottom trying to get out of the way of the leaders lead to Busch going below, which slowed Busch down, that lead to Colin Braun going to the outside, making the pass and going on to capture his first Truck ...

Mark Martin and Chevrolet grab victory from Johnson and Biffle in LifeLock
2009-06-15 00:33:00
(Photo Credit: NASCAR.com via Yahoo Sports inside Gallery)In the Irish Hills of Michigan lies the 2-mile D-Shape oval known as the Michigan International Speedway. Michigan Speedway is known for a few good races here and there, but mainly the racing on the track is long (green flag runs) and stretched out, but ends up becoming a nail bitter of a finish thanks to what turns into a fuel economy races. The Michigan Speedway also sits in what was in some cases known as the “Big 3” automakers backyard, however earlier this weekend as one of the “Big 3” Chrysler exited bankruptcy and was taken over by Fiat, Chevrolet (who is in bankruptcy now) announced that they are making “NASCAR-wide” cuts. The NASCAR cuts include the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series teams will loss factory support and that will not be it, it is unknown if Chevrolet will cut some support in the Cup Series, but to this NASCAR fan, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few Chevy teams were cut, but that’s my ...

2009-06-13 06:15:00
I know that I am a little late to the party, however you know me, I like to make a grand entrance, anyway, in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Serie s, the first 13 races from the Daytona 500 to the Dover 400 are broadcasted on FOX. Over that time, while the racing has been good to watch with the exceptions of a few races that just didn’t go so well, the TV ratings have seen a double-digit drop in most cases.I have to say, in watching all 13 races which included a rain-shortened Daytona 500 won by Matt Kenseth, the Monday rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 won by David Reutimann to the Southern 500, Phoenix cup race, both won by Mark Martin, and the Aaron’s 499 that included two Big One’s, Carl Edwards fling through the air into the outside catch fence and a last lap, tri-oval pass for the lead with Brad Keselowski capturing his very first Cup Series victory, the television broadcasts have been pretty good, of course some better than others. In watching all of those races, I have to say tha...
