New York Auto Show 2008 Preview: 2009 Acura TSX heads for the Big Apple
2008-02-11 12:21:00 Never mind the spy shots, Acura's gone and released the first official photo of the 2009 TSX in conjunction with its announcement that the car will make its big debut in the Big Apple next month. No specifics about the car itself were released other than the usual boilerplate telling us that the next-gen TSX represents a "significant advancement" and that it will go on sale this Spring. One of those "significant advancements" is almost sure to be the availability of Honda's new i-DTEC clean diesel, which we're all anxious to try in the new sport sedan. In terms of its appearance, Acura has gone the evolutionary route, applying its current design language to a shape that should still be easily identifiable as the TSX. A modest application of the shield grille is in place, the wheel wells now have more pronounced flares, and the reshaped headlamps still retain that skinniness that was one of the calling cards of the last-gen car. The new face is definitely more conservative than th... More About: New York , Preview , Auto Show , Show
Toyota releases prices on 2009 Corolla and Matrix
2008-01-27 06:58:00 Toyota has finally announced pricing for the 2009 Matrix and Corolla that made their unceremonious debut back in November at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Both models get a bump in their sticker, with the Corolla costing $845 more than the outgoing 2008 model, while the Matrix increases by $680.The base Corolla, whose nomenclature has been changed from CE to "Standard", starts at $15,250 sporting a five-speed manual, while an automatic model will set you back another $800. The LE and XLE models start at $16,650 and $17,550, respectively, both equipped with an automatic tranny and the 132-hp, 1.8-liter four. Care to upgrade a bit? You can now get the new 2.4-liter four producing 158 hp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque in the XRS version starting at $18,760 with a manual or $19,950 with an automatic that Toyota notes can be "shift sequentially."The Matrix, which Toyota claims redesigned the crossover segment, but in reality is just a five-door Corolla, comes in three flavors: Standard, S and X... BMW 6-Series 635d
2008-01-27 05:52:00 The 635d has a straight-six twin-turbo 3.0-litre turbodiesel that’s hard to fault. It offers even more torque than the V10 M6, and there’s no arguing with 0-60mph in a mighty 5.7 seconds. On the road, it feels extremely fast, especially in kickdown. However, it’s the effortless nature with which it gains speed that really impresses, while the engine remains unruffled even when pushed hard. Through corners, the BMW continues to impress. There’s lots of grip, the steering has good feedback and it remains composed. However, this involvement does lead to a firm ride and a surprising amount of road noise. It’s not comfortable enough to be a true GT.The diesel 6-Series is a take on the two-door, 2+2 luxury coupe that BMW expects to account for three-quarters of UK sales. It’s a significant car alright. It was launched in 2007, along with a facelift for the entire 6-Series range. Now the controversy over the car’s styling has worn off, it’s easy to appreciate what an aggres...
Subaru Legacy 2.0 TD Sport Tourer
2008-01-27 05:38:00 Welcome to the golden age of the diesel. Hot on the heels of the world’s first-ever oil-burning supercar – Audi’s R8 V12 TDI (Issue 995) – comes the first flat-four cylinder turbodiesel unit. And it will be no surprise to learn that it’s Subaru which is responsible for the design of this unique powerplant. The Japanese firm is famous for its petrol boxer units, but the new engine is its first homegrown oil-burner, and one that its range desperately needs.Available initially in the Legacy Sport Tourer and Outback, the 2.0-litre turbodiesel is expected to be a hugely popular choice, and will account for 85 per cent and 95 per cent of sales of the two cars respectively. It’s also set to be added to the new Impreza range from the beginning of 2009, where it’s tipped to claim at least 40 per cent of models sold. But why has it taken so long to develop? While Subaru has more than 40 years’ experience of flat-four cylinder petrol engines – and plenty of turbocharging knowled...
2008 Detroit Auto Show: Mitsubishi Ra live reveal
2008-01-16 16:20:00 Along with the new Ralliart, Mitsubishi unveiled their eco-image Concept-RA yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show . Strangely, RA doesn't stand for an ancient Egyptian god nor is it some sort of shorthand for Ralliart, but the two cars do share a few design cues and were without a doubt part of an image package that Mitsubishi is trying to present at NAIAS. As previewed, the two-seater's powerplant is a 2.2-liter in-line four cylinder 16-valve Clean Diesel with MIVEC. The Concept-RA meets Tier 2 Bin 5 emission regulations in the United States thanks to a new catalytic converter system uses a diesel oxidation catalyst, a NOx trap catalyst and a diesel particulate filter. It also has butterfly doors, which are pretty cool (we'll have a video of them in action in the near future). For now, check out the press release after the jump and the photos below. The MITSUBISHI Concept-RA offers a unique interpretation of the sporty coupe. This two-seat pure coupe concept explores the transversely... More About: Live

Detroit Auto Show 2008: Saturn Vue Two-Mode, with and without a plug
2008-01-15 14:28:00 Saturn publicly showed two versions of the new Two-Mode hybrid Vue cross-over today using different battery technologies. One is the standard model that will go on sale toward the end of the this year with a nickel metal hydride battery pack. The second uses a lithium ion pack and has the ability to be plugged in for 4-5 hours giving it a ten mile electric range. Let me here correct an error I made in my original post on the regular two-mode Vue. Contrary to what I had heard earlier, the fuel economy improvement is actually 50 percent in combined driving rather in the city cycle. According to GM Powertrain VP Tom Stephens, GM is actually hoping to get even more improvement before production launch later this year. The company also wants to get the PHEV Vue to market by late next year, making it the first commercially available plug-in hybrid. Detroit 2008: Maserati unveils special Quattroporte “Collezione Cento”
2008-01-15 14:17:00 The Maserati Quattroporte is without a doubt one of our favorite sports sedans, exuding the kind of exotic Italian craftsmanship usually reserved for supercars and two-door GTs. But with a facelift around the corner, the Trident marque has been keeping the sensuous sedan fresh with ever more desirable editions. The latest is the Quattroporte Collezione Cento, unveiled here at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit . If you have a grasp of any romance language, you'll have guessed that the Collezione Cento is limited to a 100 examples, each individually numbered. It features a special ivory tint with a beautiful quilted Cuoio dark tan leather interior, and comes equipped with the company's multimedia entertainment system, a keyboard built in to the rear center armrest, iPod and USB connectivity, web access and DVDs displayed on twin 10.4" touch-screens mounted in the front seatbacks. We have a selection of live shots from the show floor as well as the press shots in the... Spy Shots: International LoneStar Class 8 tractor
2008-01-13 06:14:00 Big rigs are awesome. We freely admit that this isn't our area of expertise, but when something particularly cool and truck-related comes along, we're more than happy to share. Thanks to an Autoblog reader named Johnny, who sent in the photos you see here, something cool indeed came along. We don't know if the pair of rigs you see are concepts or a new production model that's set to debut sometime soon. The Mid-America Trucking Show -- the biggest show in the industry -- is coming up in March, so these might be headed there. Our submitter at first thought that they might just be show vehicles, but some details lead him to believe that this could be a new production model sporting a nifty new hood design. The thing that has our tipster thinking "production" is that different sleeper configs are shown. The silver rig's is taller and incorporates a large fairing, while the black one's is less pronounced. Aside from the swoopy front end, the layout seems conventional, with exposed ... Mazda aims to inject some 'six' appeal into the market with its revamped fa
2008-01-06 13:59:00 Competition in the large family car market is hotting up. Ford’s Mondeo and the Renault Laguna lead the field for quality, while Vauxhall’s Insignia promises to be just as impressive. And now, Mazda is hoping to inject some ‘six’ appeal to the sector. The firm has given its 6 a stylish new look, as well as increasing quality and improving the specification. Bosses also claim the car’s reputation for sporty handling will remain intact, and challenge the Mondeo for driving thrills. So, we got behind the wheel of one of the first examples in the UK to see if it matches up to the promise. And there’s no denying that the exterior is a success, as the sleek 6 is one of the best-looking cars in the class. At the front, a deep, V-shaped grille is flanked by angular, swept-back headlamps. A low roof, high waistline and bulging wheelarches provide the car with a powerful stance. At the rear, the neat LED tail-lights are distinctive, while this Sport model also benefits from a ra... Detroit 2008: Ford Explorer America Concept says bye-bye to body-on-frame
2008-01-06 13:40:00 For more than a decade the Ford Explorer was the top-selling SUV in the US with annual sales topping 400,000 units for many years. The best days of the body-on-frame SUV are clearly behind it, though, as the market has shifted toward crossovers like the smaller Escape and Honda CR-V, as well as larger vehicles like the Ford Edge. Ford has seen the light and the next generation Explorer is finally abandoning the traditional setup in favor of a new unit body design. The new Explorer America concept that Ford is debuting at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show is the first public hint of where the Explorer is going in the coming years. When the Explorer is replaced around the end of this decade, the new model is expected to look much like this concept. The basic proportions and size are very close to the current Explorer, but the styling is a more modern look for this Ford stalwart. The combination of rising fuel costs and new fuel economy rules is pushing Ford to increase the efficiency of all t... More About: Body , Concept

Nitin Design unleashes the Dacoit concept bike
2008-01-03 14:56:00 The Nitin Design Dacoit concept bike was reportedly styled to look like a hooded man. "When viewing the front portion of the bike, you can see an evil figure whose eyes/headlights are peeping from underneath the hood." In addition to the masked-man motif of the front end, the seat back rest was inspired by a shark's fin. The animal theme continues: "The back of the bike is short to enhance the 'man sitting on an engine' concept and to give it an evil Hyena-like feel."We're not sure the mash of design cues that makes up the Dacoit concept all belong together, but overall, we dig it. Many bikes are starting to look too similar, so we won't fault one for trying to be different. No real details are available to tell us what kind of powerplant the bike could sport, but that's fine considering that this is really just a styling exercise. Audi A5 Sportback Illustration
2008-01-03 14:55:00 Following the leaked Audi roll out schedule until 2012 in Quattro Quarterly, we now have an artist rendering of the Audi A5 Sportback. The model is planed for September 2009 and will proceed with Audi’s aim to differentiate the A5 into a separate model family. Before the A5 Sportback, there will be A5 Cabrio, and A4 Avant in March 2008. Obviously, the A5 Sportback will not remain a two-door as the coupe, but rather a five-door configuration. However, in order to be distinguished form the A4 Avant, the car might propose more sleek design in the rear with a more spacious cabin. The A5 Sportback will be equipped with bigger engines than the A4 Avant, such as 4.2 V8, although, the most sporty version will be the RS 5, which is expected to debut in early 2009.Audi’s plan to catch sales and production up to BMW and Mercedes-Benz consists of enlarging the product range with 18 new models. That move will help the company reach 1 million vehicles sales in 2010 as those 18 new models will ... More About: Illustration
Preview: 2009 Toyota Corolla and Matrix
2008-01-01 14:07:00 Cambridge, Ontario - The long-awaited 10th generation Toyota Corolla made its debut this week at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show. Also revealed was the 2009 Toyota Matrix . Both will go on sale in February 2008.Since most Canadian auto writers were attending the Canadian Car of the Year "Test Fest" in Niagara-on-the-Lake and would be unable to attend the press conference in Las Vegas, a special "sneak preview" was also held at Toyota's manufacturing facility in Cambridge, where the Corolla and Matrix are built. The first Corolla was introduced in 1966 and in 1988 the first Canadian-built Corolla - the sixth generation - rolled off the line at TMMC (Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada) in Cambridge. The Matrix, launched in 2002, is also built in Cambridge.Over two million Corollas have been built at TMMC and more than one million have been sold in Canada. Since 2002, Toyota has built 460,000 Matrix crossovers, a quarter of which have been sold in Canada. Hist... More About: Preview , Toyota Corolla
Leaked: facelift for Mercedes CLS
2008-01-01 13:38:00 We've been seeing camouflaged test mules of an updated Mercedes -Benz CLS-Class sedans driving around for some time now, but the German automaker apparently can't keep it under wraps anymore. On Saturday the online motoring press worldwide lit up with two pictures of the facelifted "four-door coupe", reportedly leaked by someone inside Mercedes ahead of its intended debut. The pictures show an updated top-of-the-line CLS 63 AMG. What we can tell from the images is that the newest AMG rocket gets a new grille split in three sections instead of four; upgraded wheels from 18 to 19 inches, with a style similar to those on the Porsche 911 Turbo; led tail-lights; a carbon fiber rear spoiler; a new rear diffuser; and updated exhaust outlets.Whether any mechanical changes have been made has yet to be revealed, but we'll be sure to keep you posted. A shot of the rear is included after the jump.It looks now like a PR strategy rather than an unexpected leak. Just yesterday there was a photo o... More About: Facelift , Leaked
Lexus LF-A mule unseats Porsche GT2 as King of the 'Ring
2008-01-01 13:17:00 A Lexus LF-A mule has unofficially recorded a lap time on the Nordschleife of 7 minutes, 24 seconds. This is not in dispute. What is in dispute is how many seconds faster the LF-A's lap time is than that of the 2008 Porsche 911 GT2, the previous "King of the 'Ring " record holder. Wikipedia notes that the fastest 911 GT2 driven around the Ring posted a lap time of 7 minutes, 32 seconds and was driven by Walter R?hrl, Porsche's company test driver and accomplished WRC driver and road racing pilot. Porsche was so proud of the feat that it produced a snazzy video of the run that you can watch here. AutoExpress, however, which reported on the LF-A's remarkable lap time, claims that the fastest 911 GT2 lap time on the Nurburgring is 7 minutes, 25 seconds, but we could find no evidence on the web of a stock 911 GT2 ever posting a time that fast. Also note that a handful of other cars have posted lap times, but all are either tuner cars or limited production boutique cars like the Pagan... More About: Mule
Nissan at 2008 Tokyo Auto Salon
2007-12-30 12:04:00 Nissan is bringing several concepts to one of the many local tuning shows, the Tokyo Auto Salon . Japanese are mad for individualising their cars, ranging from insane exhaust tip action to the more down-to-earth body kits. This year at the 2008 Tokyo Auto Salon (January 11 to 13) Nissan comes with five concepts and two race cars. The term concept is a bit broad in this case since it mainly refers to a new body kit / suspension / wing etc and not an actual concept study. Nissan has released images of the cars but no details so we have to wait for the nitty-gritty until the show.First in line is the new Skyline, both in coupe and sedan guise. The Skyline is piggybacking on the GT-R and seems ready for a sportier package, the aerosports package for the coupe and simply aero for the sedan.Second are the SUV's like the Nissan X-Trail X-tremer and Dualis (or Qashqai) Premium Concept. The X-Trail is tuned in-house while Autech has taken care of the Dualis. Autech also received a Nissan Cara... More About: Nissan
LEAKED:Mazda Furai Concept
2007-12-30 12:01:00 "Zoom-Zoom" philosophy goes on race track with Mazda 's new concept car. It is back to the future as Mazda wants to give a reminder of its overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991. Some official photos have leaked just two weeks before Detroit Motor Show 2008, where the Furai Concept is making first public appearance. The name Furai (pronounced foo-rye) means "sound of wind".The Furai is not a typical non-functional concept as it is designed to really perform. The basis of the car is a 2005 Courage C65 chassis, which is an LMP2-class entry in the American Le Mans Series. The body resembles the style of the Nagare concept car. It's the fifth concept of the family – after Nagare, Ryuga, Hakaze and Taiki concepts, that clearly represent Mazda's exploration of a new design language for its future cars. So far the company has not confirmed if these design cues will finally take root in a production car.The car is powered by a mid-mounted, three-rotor Mazda 20B rotary engine, th... Audi RS 5 Engine Speculation and Rendering
2007-11-10 09:13:00 Following Audi 's self imposed schedule of having only one RS model on the market at a time, deliveries of the brand new 573hp twin-turbo V10 RS 6 Avant are getting underway for 2008 as the B7 RS 4 ends its production. With RS cars typically having a two year life cycle, the next RS model is expected to debut in 2010 as MY 2011. The most likely candidate to take over from the RS 6 is the RS 5 Coupe since - by that time - it will be in the second half of it's life cycle, although too early for the all-new B8 A4.With regards to the horsepower wars amongst the German auto makers, Audi had positioned previous RS and S models just above and below the competition, the BMW M3 (420hp) and Mercedes CLK 63 AMG (480hp). And much of the chatter lately in the media seem to be supporting that - as the figures put the RS 5 between 450 and 500hp.Earlier this year Car Magazine reported the RS 5 will receive the 4.2 liter V8 currently in the RS 4 with the addition of two small turbochargers for an a... More details on BMW's future 4x4 lineup
2007-11-08 15:13:00 BMW appears to be angling to become a truckmaker. Okay, crossovers, not trucks. Whatever you want to call the tall, heavy wagons, that's your business. Within the next five years, BMW's planning on adding three new truck-type things to their lineup. The X6 will arrive next year, followed by the 4x4 version of the MINI in 2009, and the also-small X1 in 2010. The MINI 4x4 will run a Getrag-developed AWD system, and we'd expect the X1 to use the basic component set of the forthcoming 1-series. The Concept CS is also headed for production, and it will be positioned above the 7-series sedan carrying 8 and 12 cylinder powerplants. Imagine that, instead of the 7-series heading up the Ultimate Driving Machine lineup, there'd be a long-hooded GT-looker with a fastback roofline. Even the news that BMW is following the money into SUVs and committing bigtime with multiple new models, it could be worse. The X5 is handsome, and that general motif is present on the X6, and we'd expect it to s... More About: Future , Details , Lineup
Alfa Romeo 159 TI revives a historical sporting badge on its latest 159 var
2007-11-06 15:07:00 A legend is back at Alfa Romeo . The TI badge now appears on the 159 saloon. Short for Turismo Internazionale, the discreet two-letter label is reserved for only the most sporty and luxurious models in the range. To mark the occasion, the Italian manufacturer has fitted the newcomer with an upgraded version of its 2.4-litre JTD diesel engine. It now produces 210bhp – up 10bhp on the old unit. Sports suspension has also been added, alongside cosmetic up-grades inside and out. However, the Alfa faces stiff competition from prestige challengers such as the accomplished BMW 3-Series and new Audi A4. So are the revisions enough to allow the 159 to take on these premium class leaders? If the answer was based on looks alone, the Italian should have its rivals well and truly beaten. At the front is the traditional heart-shaped grille, flanked by six circular headlamps sitting beneath a menacing brow. Move around the car and you’ll be struck by the neat design details – such... Star of last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show-Kia KEE 2+2
2007-11-06 14:54:00 Look at the Kia line-up, and you’ll find lots of practical and affordable cars... but you’ll have to wait until early next year before you see anything sporty. That’s when the new Pro_cee’d arrives – although even that hot three-door hatch seems sensible compared with this, the KEE!The 2+2 coupé was one of the stars of last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show , and now Auto Express has driven it. So, is it all show and no go? From the outside, the KEE is unlike anything in the current Kia range. A squat stance and low roofline give it the appearance of a sports car, while distinctive LED lights up front and the luminous paintjob scream for attention. At the back is a wraparound windscreen and a pair of centrally mounted exhaust pipes. The shape of the front grille is echoed beneath the powered tailgate and highlighted by contrasting rear light clusters. You won’t find any handles, either. World Exclusive First Drive! Lamborghini Reventon
2007-11-04 15:39:00 The "jet fighter for the street" concept has been around since the late 1970s, the ill-fated, never really worked Vector being the most obvious attempt. Three decades later it has finally arrived, thanks to Lamborghini . The otherworldly Reventon is named after a particularly feisty fighting bull. With just 20 production cars to be made (11 coming to the U.S.), it'll be Lamborghini's most exclusive road car ever. Other "mosts" include price ($1.4-plus million at current exchange rates), and speed (210-plus mph). The main inspiration for this most arresting of automotive shapes was the F22 Raptor. Well, duh! Manfred Fitzgerald, Lamborghini's director of brand and design and the man who's carefully guided the company's resurgence over the past decade, was at a European NATO base with his design team."We had a good contact with the base manager (and) sat in Tornados and different aircraft to get some inspiration," Fitzgerald says. White Flash: Edo Competition 599/630 GTB
2007-11-04 15:26:00 The sorcerers at Germany's Edo Competition have cast their spells on the Ferrari 599 GTB, and as usual, the results are impressive. The Edo Competition GTB comes in two flavors, but let's cover the common ground, first. The car gets lowered 40mm in back, 40 mm in front, and gets added stick courtesy of an Edo/KW adjustable sport suspension. 20" wheels with stainless outer rims can be custom-painted in any shade the owner desires, and the V12's song is newly amplified thanks to a sport exhaust with a driver-controllable butterfly valve. Want it to be louder? Just dial it up, baby.Of course, the most important piece of the puzzle is the 6.0L Enzo-derived V12 under that long hood. In stock trim, it blasts out 620 horsepower. Edo customers can opt for the Level 1 "F599 GTB" engine upgrade, which combines intake and exhaust work with ECU reprogramming to boost output to 650 horses. Those with deeper pockets and/or looking for a more extreme level of tune can opt for the Level 2 "630 G... More About: Flash , White
Honda S2000 Type S at 2007 Tokyo Motor Show
2007-10-28 18:09:00 The Tokyo Motor Show is about to burst at the seams and manufacturers are dropping names left and right. The latest of these is the Honda S2000 Type S which is based on the highly praised S2000 but adds a huge spoiler and a new aerodynamic package. In fact, it seems to be the US Honda S2000 Club Racer which made its debut at the New York Motor Show. The Type S is powered by Honda's 237 hp 2.2 liter 4-cylinder DOHC engine and is, as the US press office so nicely stated, 'The S2000 CR is the closest thing you can get to a Honda-built racecar with license plate holders and a horn'.Pricing in Japan starts at 3,800,000 (just over 23,500 EURO) and Honda hopes to sell 100 units every month and can be had in ten different colours with black and yellow interior, just like its US counterpart. The Dodge looks interesting, but simply doesn’t feel like a modern SUV
2007-10-26 16:37:00 The Dodge offers a thirsty 3.7-liter V6 petrol engine, or a suitably grunty 2.8-litre diesel; with 460Nm of torque, it isn’t short of pulling power. It’s smooth enough at idle, but is not terribly refined. The five-speed auto gives reasonably smooth changes, though, and the brakes have good feel and impressive performance. Sadly, the handling is a letdown, and the ride is uncomfortable. It seems to make no attempt at smoothing out bumps, crashing into them instead. At speed, the steering feels disconcertingly light either side of the dead-ahead position, yet at parking speeds the wheel becomes heavy. There’s also a fair degree of body roll to contend with in corners. If you’re going to name a car Nitro, you can hardly give it insipid styling. Dodge’s designers haven’t done that – it looks like a great big toy truck. It’s not subtle or sophisticated, but certainly has presence. The all-American off-roader is packed with character, and is a stand-out budget rival to th... More About: Interesting , Simply , Modern , Feel
Ford Mustang Bullitt to Debut at 2007 LA Auto Show
2007-10-26 15:01:00 Ford have decided help us start our weekend off with a bang by announcing the Ford Mustang Bullitt will make it's world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month as well as releasing a first teaser image (see above). The new Bullitt will deliver a perfect balance of power, performance and a look of quiet intensity, and will hit dealership in early 2008.That is all Ford have told us so far, fortunately a few specifications were leaked to various forums earlier this month, which we suspect was done intentionally by Ford. Now we also know the Bullitt will feature a “FR Power Pack” with an estimated power output of 312hp which is obviously nothing to get too excited about.
