GPS in cabs could point finger at true scofflaws
2008-02-25 19:29:00
The traffic on Third Ave. Monday morning kept even the most impatient cabbies to a safe crawl, but there was still a skid mark on the sidewalk outside Docks Oyster Bar. The night before, an out-of-control taxi had jumped the curb here and struck a TV news chopper pilot. Paul Smith had mastered his piloting skills in Vietnam, and he survived that war only to be killed at the age of 60 by acab outside a Manhattan restaurant. The cops suggest the cabbie was speeding. The cabbie insists otherwise. As this remains a country where everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise, the cabbie was not charged. The suspicion remains, and if the cabbie is as blameless as he claims, then he should be foremost among those who support a GPS that records a taxi’s speed. City taxis are being equipped with GPS devices, but they only kick in with the meter and are intended simply to mark where a trip begins and ends, not the velocity in between. A little geek work could enable th...

Three rescued as cabs flips onto its side
2008-02-25 19:04:00
Two female passengers helped clear before fire crews cut driver out. A cab driver was cut out of his vehicle by rescue crews on Monday morning after it was flipped onto its side at a pedestrian crossing in Kempston. Firefighters removed the roof of the stricken Toyota Avensis to allow ambulance service staff to free the man, who appeared to be trapped behind the steering wheel. The driver, who was in a One Atlas Cars minicab, was eased out of the wreckage in the High Street at around 11.30am and taken on a stretcher into a waiting ambulance. He is not thought to have been seriously injured. The crash happened at a crossing near the roundabout outside the Lidl supermarket at around 10.50am.  Senior collision investigator PC Roly Hockenhull said the private hire vehicle was approaching the crossing from the Wootton direction when, for reasons now being investigated, it swerved off the road. The Toyota, which was carrying two female passengers, collided with a Belisha beacon and...

New taxi scheme is launched
2008-02-25 19:01:00
A SPECIAL taxi service for people who have difficultly using public transport is up and running in Cambourne. The Cambourne Taxi Card Scheme will also be available to those who do not have access to a car or any other means of transport. The system works by offering subsidised taxi card vouchers that can be used with some local taxi companies and Cambridge Dial-a-Ride. The aim is to help people get to and from medical appointments at Hinchingbrooke and Addenbrooke’s hospitals, or simply to the shops. Vouchers cost 75p each and are available in booklets of 10 or 20. Each 75p voucher has a value of £2.50 and can be used to pay the taxi fare. Vouchers and further details about eligibility for the scheme are available from Cambridgeshire County Council on 01223 717755. http://www.taxiblog.co.uk/2337/new-taxi-s cheme-is-launched/

IT’S NOT FARE, BLASTS ANGRY CABBIE JOHN
2008-02-25 17:03:00
A BRASSED-off cabbie who was ordered to remove a safety message from his private hire car has slammed licensing chiefs. John Dunlop, 61, was so concerned about passengers failing to belt up in the back seat he had a warning sign made up to make sure they weren’t putting themselves at risk. But now he has been forced to get rid of the sign on the rear passenger window – because it breaches advertising rules. Disgusted John, who works out of Johnstone, hit out after he was told by Renfrewshire Council to remove the sign that urge travellers to fasten their seat belt or face a fine. The cabbie says the move by Renfrewshire Council to make him remove the warning is ridiculous and compromising passenger safety. Mr Dunlop added: “They told me they have orders and have got to go by the book. They said that if they allowed me to keep the letters on the window it could lead to more people doing the same. They asked ‘what would then happen if 1,500 cars did it?’...

Taxi drivers stage noisy protest outside Palestra
2008-02-25 16:54:00
Dozens of London taxis converged on the London Development Agency’s Blackfriars Road HQ on Wednesday lunchtime to protest against a new scheme some cab drivers claim is "racist". Taxi drivers constantly sounded their horns and blew whistles as they drove round and round the London Development Agency’s offices in the Palestra building opposite Southwark tube station. The hour-long demo was organised by the Elephant and Castle-based London Cab Drivers Club. Last week the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency announced a new scheme to encourage more women and people from black, asian and minority ethnic communities, who are currently significantly under-represented in the taxi industry, to train to become licensed taxi drivers. The LCDC claims that this scheme "is an attempt at social engineering where the result will be to create division among black, Asian and white people where none exists within the taxi trade at this time". http://www.t...

Given the run around by illegal minicabs
2008-02-25 16:52:00
By Ryan Kisiel     ILLEGAL minicabs have racked up tens of thousands of pounds in parking fines - with the cash not being collected. The unlicensed taxis are targeting supermarket shoppers in Rye Lane, Peckham, by offering them lifts for rates cheaper than official drivers. The South London Press has learnt that four of these illegal drivers have been given more than £5,000 in parking fines. The drivers, who cops say live outside the borough, have not paid Southwark council’s charges and parking bosses are finding it difficult to track them down. Superintendent Victor Olisa from Southwark police said: "We’ve had a problem with unlicensed taxis operating out of this area for quite a while. People are unsure of the difference between a licensed and unlicensed minicab which can add to the confusion. "We want people not to use them for their own safety and have been campaigning for this." Susan Jones, ward councillor for The Lane, said: &quo...
