2008-01-13 19:35:00 Lexus LF-A Roadster ConceptThe engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car's top to create a high-performance roadster. The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure's strength and rigidity even without a top.Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 liters in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A's engineers refer to as a "front-mid" configuration. The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a tr...
Small Hummer!?
2008-01-13 18:52:00 Hummer HX ConceptThis is the small Hummer we've been expecting for years. It's called the HX Concept and it was conceived by a trio of GM's youngest designers. They were told to create a smaller, more youthful Hummer that still incorporated all the trademark design cues that have defined the current Hummer lineup. In other words, "What would a Hummer H4 look like?"The result is the HX Concept, a two-door, open-top trail-runner roughly the size of a Toyota FJ Cruiser. At 81 inches, it's slightly wider than the Toyota, but its 103-inch wheelbase is 3 inches shorter than the FJ.Dig deeper, however, and the HX is more like a Jeep Wrangler. The doors and fender flares are removable and the top reconfigurable. Remove the rear section and it's an SUT; add the square top and it's a two-door wagon. Here it wears a slant-back top that gives the HX the look of a Baja race truck."This is the Hummer design language stripped down to its essence," says David Rojas, creative designer. "The HX... 2008-01-13 18:33:00 Ford Verve ConceptWith the introduction of the Ford Verve concept at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, we have the first evidence of Ford's intent to align its North American and European products.Yes, Ford has tried the world car idea more than a few times in the past, but we don't ever recall it looking this good. The Verve previews a so-called B-segment (or smaller-than-Focus) car that the company will sell in the U.S. in 2010. Similar versions for European and Japanese markets are expected to debut at the end of this year. The version of the Verve that appears at the Detroit show is a variation on the one shown at the Guangzhou auto show late last year. Both are notchback four-door sedans with curved, coupelike roof lines distinguished by ellipse-shape side glass and deeply contoured side panels. The only major difference between the two is that the Detroit version has a second, smaller grille mounted above that monstrous whale shark maw of a lower grille. All three Verves share the ... 2008-01-13 17:54:00 Mazda Furai ConceptRemember Mazda's overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991? The rotor-heads at Mazda sure do, and they created the Furai as a reminder of that accomplishment. Half concept car dreamery, half prototype racer, the Furai is less a car than a statement of Mazda's intention to re-enter the fabled endurance race at some undisclosed time, presumably in the near future.Translating literally to "sound of wind," which we're certain is not intended to recall dinner with the Klumps, the Furai (say foo-RYE) is capable of making noise. The basis of the Furai is a 2005 Courage C65 chassis — itself formerly an LMP2-class entry in the American Le Mans Series — that Mazda reskinned in the style of its Nagare concept car. It's the fifth such design exercise as Mazda works to develop a new design language for the future, preceded by the Nagare, Ryuga, Hakaze and Taiki concepts. The company remains mum on when these design cues will finally take root in a production car.T... More About: Wind , Sound
Challenger Is Back!
2008-01-13 17:29:00 Dodge Challenger ConceptAfter numerous rumors and leaks, DaimlerChrysler officially announced the new 2007/2008/2009 Dodge Challenger Concept, on display last week at the Detroit auto show. The car features a 425 horsepower 6.1L Hemi, capable of propelling the car to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, and through the quarter mile in 13. Top speed is 174 mph. "Challenger draws upon the initial 1970 model as the icon of the series," said Tom Tremont, Vice-President of Advanced Vehicle Design at Dodge. "The 1970 model is the most sought after by collectors. But instead of merely recreating that car, the designers endeavored to build a Challenger most people see in their mind's eye-a vehicle without the imperfections like the old car's tucked-under wheels, long front overhang and imperfect fits," he said. "As with all pleasurable memories, you remember the good and screen out the bad." "We wanted the concept car to evoke all those sweet memories," Tremont said. Getting the right proportion... Red And Rare!
2008-01-13 16:09:00 Ferrari Conciso ConceptRed and rare. Save for a few vegetarians among us, that's how we like our steaks, and that's how we like our Ferraris. But some are so rare, even the bloodlust-driven connoisseurs among us don't know what to do with it. Take this one-off Ferrari Conciso. It's absolute carpaccio. But nobody seems to be biting. The Conciso was built by German studio Michalak Design based on the mechanicals of a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS (s/n 80962). As the name implies, the idea was to trim the chassis down to its bare essentials. The car has no doors and little in the way of a windshield to speak of. The driver and passenger hop over the sides like an F1 driver, hunker down into the racing buckets, buckle the competition harnesses and strap on the helmets, stored in special compartments inside the cabin. The concept was shown at the 1993 Frankfurt show and in Geneva the following year, and was awarded second place in the Eurosign Design Awards behind the Bertone Blitz electric v... More About: Rare

The vehicle is named in honor of the 75th anniversary of Italian design firm Pininfarina, which built the vehicle on a Maserati MC 12 chassis, with technological partnership provided by Motorola. The original Birdcage was crafted from 1959 - 1963; the name implies homage not to the Robin Williams-Nathan Lane "La Cage Aux Folles" film, but to the wire-like look of the tubes that made up the earlier edition's chassis. The Maserati engine in the Birdcage 75 is a 700-horsepower V-12. A sloping windscreen and 22-inch tires add to the otter-slick profile.
