The 2009 Hyundai Elantra will make its debut April 20 at the Beijing Motor Show , an increasingly important step on the car show circuit as automakers seek growth in China. Jalopnik reports, "The new Elantra maintains the design language of the rest of the cars in the lineup that aren't the Genesis. That means an evolution of the front end treatment to something more resembling a late model Acura." Auto blog sees the same resemblance, saying "it's somewhat reminiscent of the beak on early-'00s Acura CL/TL models. Those cars still look good, so this is not a bad thing for the Elantra." Autoblog likes the look, commenting, "Think of the changes as going from regular vanilla ice cream to that tastier version with the little flecks of real vanilla inside. The tenth Beijing International Auto Show will open on April 20 in the new hall of the Beijing International Exhibition Center. Until now, more than 2,100 manufacturers from 18 countries and regions have participated, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany and Italy. The total exhibition area is over 180,000 square meters; and once again set a new record in Asia's automobile exhibitions. Three models will arrive but not until 2010Nissan has announced plans to enter the light commercial vehicle market in North America.The Japanese carmaker said it would introduce three LCVs to the North American market within three years - the first of the products will be launched in early 2010. Joe Castelli, who was recently named vice president, light commercial vehicle and fleet, NNA, will lead the LCV Business Unit in the US.“Globally, the LCV business is now a substantial part of Nissan’s sales and profitability, representing a significant part of Nissan total vehicle sales,” said Andy Palmer, corporate vice president and head of the LCV global business unit for Nissan.“We already have major operations in Japan, China and Europe and so it is natural that we are now ready to expand our business in North America.”

The stop affects Forester XT, Liberty GT and WRX models.   A STRANGE engine noise has left about $50 million worth of brand-new, high-end Subarus languishing in Australian warehouses and showrooms. The Japanese carmaker yesterday suspended worldwide sales of several Subaru models after identifying ``less than 10 instances'' of excessive big-end bearing wear in models using its high-performance 2.5-litre turbocharged engine. The potential problem affects brand-new Forester XT, Impreza WRX and WRX STI, and Liberty GT hatches, sedans and wagons built since early January. Saab And Volvo Joint Venture for Plug-In Hybrid Cars

Swedish manufacturers Saab and Volvo - along with electricity provider Vattenfall, battery company ETC and the Swedish state - are launching a joint venture to develop technology for plug-in hybrid cars. There are of course several hybrids on the market already, but none of them are plug-ins. A normal hybrid captures energy which would normally be lost during braking and stores it in the battery for the electric motor. Plug-ins draw electricity from the mains, and while this might at first seem to be a backwards step it's claimed that CO2 emissions will be lower for a plug-in car than for a conventional hybrid - all the more so if the mains electricity comes from a hydro electric station or a wind farm.Volvo says it intends to introduce normal hybrid cars"in the medium term".Meanwhile, the joint venture consortium will start off with a fleet of ten plug-ins along the lines of the Volvo C30 ReCharge concept which made its first public appearance last autumn.

Over 400 news cars―including 2009 models not yet on the market―are on display at the Greater Milwaukee Auto Show , which runs through March 2 at the Midwest Airlines Center.   Among the other attractions are an exhibition on fuel-efficient vehicles, a collection of 1950s muscle cars from the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, and a scale model of what the finished Marquette Interchange Project will look like.    The 2008 Greater Milwaukee Auto Show  is open from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. today.

Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, Ford had a secure spot at the mid-size table. Honda's Accord and Toyota's Camry were strong sellers--but so was the Taurus, which sold more than 300,000 copies a year in those good years.
