VW GOLF - THE NEW TOYOTA COROLLA
2007-12-17 02:02:00 The current Golf has been quite the success story for VW Australia. Since its introduction in 2004, the German hatchback has found its way into more Australian driveways than any VW has in the last few decades. It isn't unusual for the Golf to sneak into the top 20 of the sales charts, and the Australian motoring press have been united in their praise for the 'premium' hatch from the moment it hit our roads 3 years ago. Scratch below the surface, however, and there's very little to get excited about...Sure, VW have some of the best diesel engines available in this country, and the reliability record of Golfs past and present speak for themselves. Even the dynamics and handling are acceptable, if unresponsive. But take a step back and have a good look at one. Look at one with a clean sheet and no prejudice and it's hard to get excited. Such is the lack of flair or effort that VW is well into the process of giving the Mark V a major facelift, due in 2008/09. Step inside and you'... More About: Toyota , Toyota Corolla
LAMBORGHINI V FERRARI
2007-12-14 05:23:00 It's a battle that has raged for decades. The level of execution of each company's products are so slim that you'd be hard pressed to rank one above the other. The passion both companies instills in each and every car they create never fails to astound. There is, however, one little problem the men in the red corner have faced in recent years, and it has nothing to do with their beautiful road cars. You see, since 1996 one certain German has been flying around the world's greatest racing circuits using a Ferrari Formula One car to good effect, storming to 5 consecutive Formula One World Drivers Championships. Michael Schumacher, down in the record books as the most successful grand prix driver of all time, has become a legend of gigantic proportions for Ferrari. However, while Schumacher has directly influenced the renaissance of Ferrari, the other side of Schumacher has undoubtedly undermined the image of the Italian firm.Throughout the years we were often treated to some of th... VOLVO S40
2007-12-13 06:28:00 This is the Volvo S40 and V50. Rather confusingly, they are the slightly smaller twins of the larger S60 and V70. You see, Volvo made the strange decision to have a 2 pronged attack at the compact exec class by offering the smaller S40 and V50 between the $40-$60k price bracket, and the S60/V70 between $50-$80k. Confused? Well luckily most people sorted it out as Australian shoppers have bypassed the S60 completely for the S40. The 'mini' Volvo is one of the most complete European saloons available on the market. Sharing the same basic chassis with the Ford Focus and Mazda 3, the S40 is seen by many as the most dynamically superior front drive compact exec. Handling and steering are impeccable for a car handicapped by a front drive chassis, with crisp turn in from the steering wheel and next to no body lean when cornering hard. While the suspension is on the harder side, it soaks up the poor Australian roads much more convincingly than the Audi A4, which suffers from alot of shudd...

AUDI R8
2007-12-13 06:03:00 Now if you don't know what this is by now, you need to get out more often. This, of course, is the new Audi R8, recently introduced to a anxious, and subsequently shocked, world. Setting new standards for supercars, this amazing new Audi has stormed in overnight and stolen the title of the ultimate sports car from the evergreen Porsche 911.Just from pictures alone it's not hard to understand why this car has caused such a stir. In a world were 911s, Jaguar XKRs and even Ferrari 430s have become the default choice for the ultimate 'everyday' supercar, the R8 offers exclusive and aggressive lines and shapes that make it's competitors suddenly seem a little too 'common'. Park this thing beside a 911 and no one notices the Porsche, such is the drawing power of the R8's features. From the LED daytime running lights to the exposed carbon fibre feature incorporated into the side air intake, Audi have created something that looks, feels, and sounds very special indeed. All of a sudde...

CITROEN C5
2007-12-13 02:37:00 This is the stunning new Citroen C5. Set to be unveiled some time during 2008, the C5 will replace the current lacklustre model that struggles for sales in the ultra tough compact executive market. Set to take on the likes of the previously mentioned Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, Volvo S40, and the all conquring BMW 3-series, this new C5 is a real stunner. Featuring the striking new design language Citroen introduced with the C4 and the much applauded C6, the new C5 is set to enhance Citroen's improved image in the luxury car market. With the french company on a roll at the moment, winning the WRC with its new C4 WRC and healthy sales of the C4 and C6, the C5 could finally give Citroen a real presence in the compact exec market. If it drives anywhere near as good as it looks, the C5 will surely continue Citroen's revival.

MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS
2007-12-13 01:36:00 We'll kick things off with the new Mercedes -Benz C-Class . Merc has high hopes indeed for its all new, all singing, all dancing compact exec. The C is the latest Benz to feature their new design language and technology first introduced in the new S-Class in 2004.First reactions in Australia are largely positive, although some are at odds with many of the design details featured inside and outside, particularly surrounding the rear end treatment. The rear light cluster and protruding bumper bar appear quite frumpy from some angles, and lack the compact yet aggressive stance of the previous generation of cars.Inside, Mercedes has unfortunately continued its recent trend of cheap, hard plastics, which are at odds with the premium you have to fork out to get behind the wheel of this car. When you sit inside the latest C, you soon realise that gone are the days of over-engineered Mercedes-Benz es which ooze of quality. While Audi, Volvo and Lexus set new standards in interior design, fit,... More About: Mercedes Benz
