Off Road Expeditions . . . What's The Deal
2008-03-07 17:25:00
Hey Joe,What's the Deal ? I am hoping you can explain it me? At least shed some insight.Ok, first off, lets keep the brand comments out of this one here, please. This can apply to your Blazers/Tahoes/Jimmys and your Ramchargers/Durangos and Cherokees. I know my Expedition is technically not a truck, even though it weighs about 5000lbs, I can tow 7500lbs, and I can toss probably 1000lbs in the back and it has a 4WD system that gets used for:1. Mud2. no less than 4-6" of snow3. pulling folks out of ditches4. Etc!Why does almost everyone I deal with wig out when they find out that I take an SUV off road? When I got my new tires, the guy's asking why I wanted aggresive tires. So I can go muddin, dude almost fell out of his chair, "but its an SUV" Yeah, and.............. Other guys that go wheelin are shocked that I take it out past the edge of the pavement, as well. I mean, whats the deal, If its got 2 driveshafts, why not use em, right?-- ExpeditionmanDear Expeditionman,Some of your b...

Man's wish becomes dream truck: '51 hot ride 'a monster'
2008-03-07 15:40:00
Volunteers team up on mega-upgrade Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Justin Lilly stares at his 1951 Ford F-1 pickup and can't help but be a little afraid. The truck has more than $130,000 worth of upgrades, sounds like a growling demon and is "murdered out" -- slang for the truck's all-black rims, paint job and tinted windows. "It's a monster," said the 20-year-old Jackson resident. "That all black just makes it look scary." Lilly, who has bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic respiratory disease due to his premature birth, received help in the truck makeover in part from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He asked the Ann Arbor Make-a-Wish chapter if they could line up someone to paint his truck and a crew of Washtenaw Community College instructors, students and community volunteers spent the past 18 months raising the funds and tracking down the parts to upgrade it. The tricked-out truck will be on displa...

Gas Prices and How to fight back
2008-03-06 22:02:00
1TonTahoe, a Silverado Member at ChevyTruckWorld.com, is tired of putting money in the pockets of people who he says are falsely manipulating gas prices and he has a plan to fight back. TIPS ON PUMPING GAS I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.. Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the grou...

Car Ins
2008-03-05 07:25:00
Car Insurance should not be the hassle that it often becomes. Several threads in TruckWorld broke out over the last several weeks with members emitting horror stories on auto insurance coverage. Rates and claims. We thought proffering an article with some pointers would be timely. So, here goes. Car insurance can be a confusing subject, especially if you have never held a policy before.  Even experienced drivers often find themselves struggling to make sense of the fine print that comes with each option.  Between deductibles, co-pays, taxes and special provisions, it can be difficult to determine where your best chance of saving money may be hiding.  Making matters even more confusing is the fact that most insurance companies calculate their own rates and premiums based on complex algorithms that take hundreds of factors into account.  Thankfully, there are some simple trends you can use to guarantee lower rates across the board. The most important determining ...

Sales of GM, Ford and Chrysler LLC are likely to drop by at least 14 percent from year-earlier levels, according to the average estimate of eight analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Chrysler may record a 12 percent sales decline this month, Bloomberg reported. Automakers report their February results on March 3. Read More at DetroitNews.com Click here for related pages

Hot-rod builder Boyd Coddington dies - AutoWeek Magazine
2008-02-27 20:27:00
Hot-rod builder Boyd Coddington dies Boyd Coddington, shown signing an autograph during the SEMA show last October. By MARK VAUGHN Boyd Coddington, the hot-rod innovator whose creations won the coveted Grand National Roadster Show's America's Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) trophy a record six times, died Wednesday morning of undisclosed causes. He was 63. Coddington was raised in rural Idaho but moved to Southern California as soon as he could to pursue his dream of building hot rods. He quickly earned a reputation for subtle, stylistic innovations on what had been an almost overdone theme--the '32 Ford roadster. That branched out to '33s, '34s and then all manner of surprising twists on iconic themes. Names such as Boydster, Smoothster, Alumacoupe and Chezoom redefined what a rod could be. His wheels were equally well known, particularly those shaved from billet aluminum. He soon earned the nickname "Billet Boyd" for his ...

2008-02-27 07:28:00
Hi guys, my lease is up in January of 2009, and my wife and i love the truck so much that we are going to keep it after the lease. what are your opinions about "lifting" a 4x2 Expy? I want to throw on the RCD 2/3" lift/levelling kit and put some 18 or 20" rims and 33inch BFG AT KOs. Obviously, this is purely for looks as i will never take my truck offroad as it is only a 4x2 and i have moved past my offroading days for now. i think it would look great though with my roof rack lifting a 4x2 Expy| Ford Truck World Topic Click here for related pages

Power Programmers
2008-02-17 03:45:00
Power programmers are hand-held devices that allow you to download updated software to your vehicle’s factory computer. This updated software modifies the fuel, spark timing, transmission shift points and other tables within the factory computer or Electronic Control Unit. This is accomplished by plugging the programmer into the diagnostic port that is typically located under the driver’s side dash board on most vehicles. Programmers are an excellent way to quickly and effectively add horsepower, torque and fuel economy to your vehicle. And it  is noticeable once you step on the throttle. Not all programmers are alike, however. Depending on the manufacturer, programmers can differ on what items are altered in your factory computer. So, we gathered together some of the most popular programmers on the market and included some of our editors' thoughts as well as consumer responses on each programmer listed.   2009 Suzuki Equator pickup truck Two core business hemispheres of Suzuki--recreational vehicles and automobiles--finally meet with the Equator pickup truck. Adapted with nominal changes from the Nissan Frontier, the Equator expands the Suzuki offerings and dove-tails nicely with its ATV, marine engine, and motorcycle offerings. Unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, the Equator made its first appearance as a trio of mildly modified, SEMA-ized trucks. Under the graphics and paint jobs, we see the respected Frontier, ready for action. The Equator will be offered in extended and crew cab configurations, with both rear- and four-wheel drive. The base engine is a 2.5-liter, 152-horsepower I-4, and the top offering is a much more potent 4.0-liter, 261-horsepower V-6. Both engines can be matched to a five-speed automatic transmission, although only the four-cylinder is available with a manual shifter. The bed employs the Nissan rail system, making it easy to ...

Traffic, weather, gas prices, even movie times -- the SYNC knows all. SYNC, the Ford/Microsoft on-board cleverness system, is now even smarter. As well as being able to link up to iPods and Bluetooth-bearing cell phones, and then obey spoken commands, SYNC’s latest upgrade includes one more bell. Or is it a whistle? In conjunction with Sirius satellite radio, this is a new take on GPS-based navigation, known as Travel Link. It provides real-time traffic information (including speed and flow), five-day weather forecasts as well as current conditions (taking in hurricane and tropical storm tracking, and conditions at ski resorts), and information from 120,000 gas stations, so users can choose by price, distance or brand. The system can then calculate a route to the chosen forecourt. This improved SYNC system will be introduced on the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS luxury sedan, available this summer. A six-month introductory subscription to Sirius Travel Link will ...

Chevy pickup passes 1 million-mile mark
2008-02-16 04:38:00
Chevy pickup passes 1 million-mile mark Associated Press GRESHAM, Wis. -- Frank Oresnik's trusty pickup truck -- he calls it "the old girl" -- passed the 1 million-mile mark with a camera crew filming the event and a public-radio audience listening in. "I can't tell you how much fun it was," he said. "It was really humbling, all this interest." Recent news stories told how Oresnik had 1,200 miles to go before reaching the milestone in the 1991 Chevrolet Silverado that he bought with 41,000 miles on it in 1996 and used in his business, distributing seafood and steaks in the upper Midwest. At the time, he was getting his latest oil change -- the kind of regular maintenance he credits with helping to keep the truck going so long. He said he's had the truck's oil changed more than 300 times. It's had so many changes that the oil pan drain plug had to be rethreaded several times, he said, and "you never hear of that...

Carl Sandburg called Chicago the City of the Big Shoulders. This year’s Chicago Auto Show is living up to that brawny reputation with a slew of new and interesting trucks. Even though the Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram debuts in Detroit were significant, they are yesterday’s news figuratively and literally. Chicago is about the future. The takeaway is that trucks will continue to evolve to meet the needs of consumers looking for cleaner and more economical ways to haul people and stuff. General Motors’ trio of crossovers, the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, gets a new sibling in the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. This groundbreaking vehicle was designed as a crossover from the ground up. Powered by a 3.6-liter V-6, the Traverse offers three-row seating and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. Gas Savings, Better Gas Mileage, Fuel Economy...
2008-02-13 06:18:00
Go green: Save Money At The Pump! The price of fuel is a topic on the minds of all Americans. War, weather and politics have the price of regular, unleaded gasoline teetering just above the $3.00/gallon mark with no sign of relief in sight. As truck enthusiasts, convincing any of us to run out and buy some compact, fuel-efficient hybrid is just unrealistic. But, there are some things you can do to fight back at the pump (and gain a few extra horsepower on the way). Interested? We thought so. This article is designed to show you some of the things you can do to squeeze a few more miles out of every gallon by maximizing the performance of the three main areas that contribute to your vehicle’s efficient use of fuel: air intake, exhaust and fuel/spark delivery. GM 14 bolt?| Chevy Truck World Topic
2008-02-13 05:54:00
I am looking to replace my 10 bolt in my 98 Z71 with a 6 lug 14 bolt. I need a little advice.I am mostly into cars as a hobby and I always used my truck for work. But I want to start fixing up my truck now. A junkyard out near me(NY)has a rebuilt rear for $1200. Does this sound like a good price? How do I know that the rear I am getting from the junkyard is for a 4x4? Do I go by the numbers (where can I look them up)? I was also told that the same rear out of a 2wd is narrower and wouldn't be good. Then a friend of mine says the 4x4 14 bolt doesn't come stock with 4:10's. Where can I get some more info? I want to make sure I don't get ripped off. Thanks, Jim GM 14 bolt?| Chevy Truck World Topic Click here for related pages

Pimp My Truck!
2008-02-10 19:02:00
Pimp My Ride-or I Mean, My Truck Do you feel like you're old convertible, jeep, or even huge truck needs some pimping? You basically don't have to scram. There are far too many choices that you can absolutely pick. These are called aftermarket accessories. Aftermarket Racks One of the most common problems in trucks, and even any other type of vehicle, is space. It seems like there's no area that will ever suffice your needs. But before you get mad and wish that there will be a car manufacturer who's open to building much larger vehicles, there are a number of aftermarket racks that can give you ample storage for the many things that you are probably going to transport, especially if you're going in a very long trip. The aftermarket racks will give the extension your trunk needs. All you have to do is to take way your backseat and set up the trunk. This way, you can have more space at the back of your truck, particularly when you have a Jeep. If you're...

Joe Moxie says: sometimes you find a web site that you really just like a whole lot. it might be the way it's designed. It might be the voice. like books, all web sites have a voice. if it's a community web site, it might be the people and the information that feeds you while you're there. people are attracted to web sites for different reasons. i like classictruckshop.com because of the constant scent of nostalgia i smell when i am there. Yep, i said smell. very few web sites have what i call a positive olfactory affect. this one does because of the essence it captures. this story by terry kohl reminds me why i love classic trucks. reading this story, i was right back in my grandfather's garage with him working on "our" 1953 ford. i can smell the scent of maw maw's candied yams coming from the kitchen while paw paw banged on the underside. That was 35 years ago when it really happened.the truck in this story has been around the family 65 years. you can bet more than one generat...

Joe Moxie Says: Ran across this item earlier this week and meant to post it. I know they are priced way high, like in up there -- $7 to $10k -- but I thought the idea was cool. When I saw the picture, I actually started trying to figure out how to buy one. Whitaker worked as an engineer for more than 20 years, then as a manufacturer's rep and in product development.
