THURSDAY 9.30AM: Taxi firms have condemned a decision by the council to up the price of a licence.   Drivers are furious the cost will go up from £75 to £108, a hike of 44 per cent, but they say they do not get an adequate service in return. Dean Cardwell, from Valley Taxis said: "If they want to put up the price of the licence plates and drivers badges up to Nottingham and Leicester prices, fine. But in return we would like the same services the city gets. "The taxi trade in the town provides a valuable and personal service to inhabitants and is of particu lar importance to the elderly, the disabled and the vulnerable" The price hike comes at a time when fuel costs are at their highest adding to the drivers’ problems. Delhi gets new radio taxi service

New Delhi (PTI): Mumbai-based V-Link Taxi s on Thursday announced the launch of radio taxi service in the national capital with a fleet of 250 cars in the first phase and said it plans to expand network across major cities in India by March next year with an investment of Rs 200 crore. The company, which currently operates ‘Meru’ taxi service in Mumbai and Hyderabad, plans to spread its network to Bangalore followed by Delhi. "By March next year, we will have 1,000 cabs in Delhi, while a fleet of 4,000 taxis across the four cities. The total project cost is Rs 200 crore, a mix of debt and equity, of which Rs 60 crore has already been invested," V-Link Managing Director Neeraj Gupta told reporters. He said the company, an investee of India Value Fund - a private equity fund, is also planning to set up service stations at the centres. Four hurt in taxi, truck crash

Four people were seriously injured when a taxi and a truck collided on Old Vereeniging road near the Thinasonke informal settlement, Ekurhuleni metro police said. Inspector Jimmy Maboko said the taxi coming from Edenpark crashed into the truck coming along Old Vereeniging road at 4pm. "All five taxi occupants including the driver were injured, two of them seriously. The truck driver and his passenger were also seriously injured," said Maboko. The taxi passengers were rushed to the Union hospital in Alberton and the truck driver and his passenger to Natalspruit hospital. Cabdrivers rallied Wednesday in Downtown Manhattan to call on the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission to allow drivers to use hands-free cell phones while on duty. Neeru Singh, a cabdriver, said that her cell phone saved her during an attempted robbery in Chelsea on Tuesday. She says at the time she was on her cell phone — talking on a conference call with five other taxi drivers. The other drivers say they heard the attack over the phone and came to Singh’s aid. Currently, it is illegal for drivers to use a hands free kit. "In all professions workers have some form of communication that they carry around," said Bhairavi Desai of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance. A PRIVATE hire taxi group has strongly backed City of York Council in a row with a 69-year-old cabbie who claims it is guilty of age discrimination. The York Private Hire Association says it believes Tony Clayton-Chance’s threat of legal action against City of York Council is "unfair and based on self interest," and it fully supports the council’s stance. The Press revealed on Tuesday how Mr Clayton-Chance, who is a member of the association, intended taking legal action because he is forced to undergo a medical every year at a cost of £150. He claimed the authority was breaching age discrimination legislation because drivers aged 45 to 65 only needed a medical every five years - and under 45s did not need one at all. Police Arrest 15 Year old For Cabbie Murder

Chattanooga Major Crimes Investigators arrested a 15-year old boy from Hixson for the weekend murder of a Cabbie. Witnesses told police that a teenager was riding in the cab of James Lee Fleming in St. Elmo, when he pulled a gun. He intended to rob the driver, but Fleming refused to give him any money and tried to drive off. Police say the youth fired twice at the cab. One of the bullets hit Fleming in the head. On Wednesday, police could not say anything else about the suspect because of his age. CITY TAXI DRIVER CLAIMS DISCRIMINATION BY GARDAI

A taxi driver in the city is claiming that black taxi drivers are being discriminated against by members of An Garda Síochána. Abram Madasa claims that he has been targetted by Gardaí in recent weeks who have issued tickets and penalty points to him. He claims he did not do anything wrong and should not have received the penalties. Mr. Madasa says he will be taking the matter further and may contact Garda authorities in relation to what he describes as discrimination against black taxi drivers. A spokesperson for Garda Headquarters at Millstreet says they are happy to deal with any complaints individuals make about members of the force. The spokesperson added that people can also contact the Garda Ombudsman Commission with their concerns if they wish.
