Tougher Safety Standards Expected
2008-01-29 20:44:00
Key safety regulations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have a direct affect on light-duty commercial vehicles. Two key safety regulations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have a direct impact on light-duty commercial vehicles, and some manufacturers already have added compliant features. One regulation calls for tougher standards to help protect passengers from side-impact crashes, a NHTSA spokeswoman said. The second calls for electronic stability control systems for light-duty commercial vehicles and cars with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds to reduce the risk of rollover injuries. NHTSA rules requiring the use of electronic stability control systems were finalized and published in 2007. ESC systems will be phased in starting with the 2009 model year when 55% of light-duty vehicles must be so equipped. By 2012, 100% of vehicles 10,000 pounds GVW or less must be covered, NHTSA said. Side-impact crashes account ...

Insurance is a must in this transitory life
2008-01-28 15:21:00
Life is transitory……we cannot overcome this. But to surpass such a reality is not possible. We can at least afford to overcome the consequences. For such a reason the insurance companies are framing policies and coverages to provide us with the best possible insurance in the market. Life is uncertain… so the life insurance policies promise a reimbursement of a good amount of money to the nominee, in exchange of a monthly premium. Accidents are inevitable….But to maintain a life without the use of auto is unthinkable. So to overcome any possible crisis when you meet with an auto accident, auto insurance is of great help to you. Apart from food to eat and air to breathe, water to drink and clothes to wear we need a house to live. A house protects us from heat, cold, and rain. So to keep our house secured is essential. Home insurance comes with a wide range of coverage options to help us and protect our home. At times accidents lead to disastrous consequences. Health insurance ...

Hitachi launches AC drive in rigid dump trucks
2008-01-24 12:27:00
Hitachi Mining, a part of Hitachi Construction Machinery, has introduced AC drive in rigid Dump trucks. The EH3500AC is powered by a Cummins 16-cylinder, QSK50 Tier II compliant turbo diesel, developing 1491kW at 1900rpm and driving through axle-mounted Hitachi AC traction drives. Fully loaded, the EH3500 weighs 500 tonnes with a payload of 360+ tonnes. The truck is powered by two AC traction motors, which propels the gargantuan to a speed of over 55KPH. The motors also function as electric brakes bringing the 3.6 metre wheels to a safe stop without the use of mechanical brake pads. AC drives start-off with a basic 6-7% higher efficiency over DC drives of comparable size, allowing faster travel speeds while reducing diesel fuel consumption. Using the same drive concept as a diesel electric locomotive, the EH3500 AC’s 3500HP diesel engine powers an AC alternator. Constant voltage DC from this alternator is transformed by an inverter into variable frequency AC, which in turn supplie...

Truck hanging off highway overpass
2008-01-17 14:36:00
A TRUCK is hanging over the rails of an overpass on the M5 motorway in Sydney’s southwest, causing serious traffic problems. The semi-trailer lost control as it tried to turn right from the M5 onto the Henry Lawson Drive overpass at Milperra about 1pm (AEDT) today, police said. The truck driver got out of the cabin safely. The load of a shipping container slid off the back of the truck, which rolled onto its side to hang over the edge of the overpass. The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has warned of extensive delays as Henry Lawson Drive and part of the M5 have been closed while cranes remove the truck and engineers inspect the overpass. Westbound traffic on the M5 is being detoured via the on and off-ramps to continue along the motorway. Traffic queues on the M5 extend back to King Georges Road, several kilometres away, the RTA said.

Stable real estate market with great weather and golf
2008-01-14 08:35:00
The bad weather in the northeast this weekend, which included two estrange snow storms and a stupid alluvium of ice, got me thinking ahead to our trip to South Carolina between Christmas and New Years. That may not be far enough south; weather duration the last weekend of December is regularly a crapshoot along the Carolinas coast. I’ve played golf that week in blunt sleeves and I’ve played in a ski jacket. I recall a beginner from New Jersey whom I was matched up with at Pawleys Plantation one year.He was so bundled up he looked like the Michelin Man, and swung like him as well. The only sure bet this time of the year is someplace undeniably warm, like the Caribbean or southern Florida. Friday’s Wall Street thing, which was not delivered to my approach because of the snow, featured an itemise about Americans investing in island homes. Properties in the Dominican Republic, the itemise indicates, have appreciated by twofold digits in contemporary years. Sounds good to me; many ...

Indian Music – HINDI, TAMIL, and TELUGU Film Music
2008-01-11 18:01:00
Introduction Twenty centuries ago, the essential role of music of India was deemed to be purely ritualistic. Music as entertainment is supposed to have evolved much later. Another part of Indian music is folk music. Indian classical music is said to have evolved out of the mixture of these. It is presumed that folk music existed long before the Aryans came to India, the Dravidians having their own. The art of music practised in India has a special significance, as it has developed from the ritualistic music in association with folk music and other musical expressions of neighbouring nations, developing into its own characteristic art. Matured through ‘’thought, experience and expression”, Indian classical music has become unique in the world. THE ORIGINS OF INDIAN MUSIC The origin of Indian music is said to be rooted in the Vedas. It is said that God Himself is musical sound, the sound which pervades the whole universe, i.e. Nadabrahma. The origins of Indian music are therefor...

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit — home of great design, worldwide unveilings, and the biggest gathering of media of any global auto show — will be environmentally conscious this year.”Green is going to be the theme, right, wrong, or indifferent,” said auto show co-chair Joe Serra, CEO of Grand Blanc Township-based Serra Automotive. The show, featuring some 90 exhibits, opens to the public Jan. 19 and runs through Jan. 27 at Cobo Center in Detroit. Environmentally friendly cars, including concepts from Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge, are among the more than 50 production and concept vehicles that will be unveiled first to the media Jan. 13-15 and then to the public during the auto show. Automakers take showrooms to customers
2008-01-08 08:50:00
With truck sales sagging nationwide because of the slowdown in home construction, General Motors is taking its latest truck models to work sites and marketing directly to the people most likely to buy them. The Hard Days Work Tour is another twist in the latest trend in the highly competitive automotive business: Targeting specific groups of potential customers with events that put the vehicles right in from of them. From taking trucks directly to construction sites to offering test drives at football games, companies are looking for new ways to attract customers. GM’s Work Tour kicked off recently at Arizona State University’s new East Valley campus, where about 300 hard hats gathered for a free lunch and a look at the trucks. They also lined up for a free power-tool raffle and certificates worth $250 toward the purchase of a GM truck. “Well, it’s a great way to get people’s attention,” said Kevin Davis, a construction worker from Queen Creek. Hyundai predicts 2008 sales gain on expanded production, marketing
2008-01-04 15:25:00
Hyundai Motor Co. forecast a double-digit increase in sales for 2008 on expanded overseas production and stronger marketing. Global sales this year will total 3.11 million vehicles, an increase of 19.6 percent from 2007, Hyundai said in a statement Wednesday. That will generate 46 trillion won ($49 billion) in revenue in 2008, the company said, an increase of 12.2 percent from the year before. “We must maximize our sales and marketing efforts in order to get closer to our customers, to grow the brand and improve profitability,” Hyundai Chairman Chung Mong-koo told employees in a New Year’s address Wednesday. Sales grew 4.1 percent to 2.6 million vehicles in 2007, Hyundai said. Some analysts said Hyundai may be too optimistic given the impact of the broadening mortgage crisis in the United States. Defaults on high-risk housing loans have tightened global credit and opened the possibility the U.S. may slip into a recession this year. Yong Dae-in, an analyst at Hanwha Sec...

Dump truck damages Everett overpass
2008-01-04 06:35:00
Traffic was backed up this morning on Route 16 west after a dump truck slammed into an overpass below the same traffic rotary that was the site of a fiery crash one month ago, state police say. The full extent of the damage to the Route 99 Sweetser Circle overpass has not been determined yet, but there is no immediate danger to motorists in the area, according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Two of the three lanes of Route 16 west are closed while DCR inspects the damaged portion of the overpass. State police Sgt. Mike Rafferty said the driver was on the portion of Route 16 west that runs beneath Sweetser Circle at 8:30 a.m. today when the trash truck’s movable dump, which was not fully lowered, hit the overpass. The driver received facial injuries and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The truck was not carrying anything at the time, Rafferty said. It’s unclear where the truck was headed. A bridge inspector from the Department of Con...

Strategy shift to help Volvo jack up sales
2008-01-02 14:31:00
Volvo Bus Corporation India expects a 30 per cent jump in the net sales volume in this calendar year. The company is estimated to have sold around 250 buses in the previous year, which includes inter-city and intra-city buses. Volvo has already started manufacturing buses locally, which it expects will accelerate sales. “Our Rs 100-crore plant — a 70:30 joint venture between Volvo and Jaico Automobiles — has already started production. Commercial launch will take place in the third or fourth week of January,” said Akash Passey, director — business, strategy and operational development, Volvo Bus Corporation. “We expect to increase our volumes significantly this year as we have changed our business model after starting local production,” he added. Volvo started its business in India in 2001. Around 1,500 buses are now on road in the country. The plant is expected to manufacture 500 buses annually. The company will hike the capacity of the unit to 1,000 buses by 2009. Th...

Volvo to fix airbag fault
2008-01-02 14:20:00
VOLVO will fix a curtain airbag fault in its new V70 wagon before it arrives here early in 2008. Euro NCAP tests found a delay in the deployment of curtain airbags in the side pole test. Volvo agreed to modify production cars, so it was re-tested but failed again. However, Australian models should not have the problem, according to Volvo Car Australia public affairs manager Laurissa Mirabelli. “With regard to EuroNCAP, the V70 had a software upgrade,” she said. “The V70 fulfils Volvo’s own stringent internal safety requirements based on real world crash research, not a laboratory test. “In the real world variables such as speed, angles of impact and the size of the occupants differ each and every time, so the challenge is to offer the highest possible safety standards covering a wide spectrum of crash scenarios. “Volvo is committed to offering the highest levels of safety and we have every confidence in the protection offered to occupants of the V70 in the event of a col...

Pickup Truck Wars
2007-12-28 09:07:00
Earlier this year, Toyota overtook General Motors (GM) in global auto sales for the first time. And 2007 was a banner year for Toyota’s truck division in the U.S., as it introduced a redesigned full-size pickup, the Tundra, intended to compete with the last reliable profit centers of American manufacturers. On top of rave press reviews, the vehicle earned the coveted Truck of the Year award from Motor Trend magazine in December, 2007. According to Automotive News, Tundra sales for the first 11 months of 2007 were up nearly 37%, to 177,336 vehicles, over sales of the previous model in the same period in 2006. Sales of GM and Chrysler Group’s competing trucks were flat. Ford suffered double-digit declines, though it still sold some 635,000 units of its flagship F Series pickup. The new A-BAT would potentially extend the ongoing dogfight into other segments of the U.S. truck market. The vehicle is a compact truck that would fit into the company’s lineup below the Tund...

Volvo recalling 125,000 trucks
2007-12-28 08:04:00
Swedish truck-and-bus maker Volvo AB on Thursday said it would recall 125,000 trucks in North America because of a fire hazard. The trucks have been sold in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, he said. Volvo’s n headquarters for trucks is in Greensboro, N.C., and its North American construction equipment business is based in Skyland, N.C. Tommy Kohle, a spokesman for the company, said it would recall the Volvo VN, Volvo VHD and Volvo VT models constructed from 2003 to the present. “There’s a problem in the main switch in the lighting system which can lead to an overheating in the component. The light can go off, or the component could short circuit and lead to a fire,” he said. The company has received reports about the problem, he said, but it was not clear whether it had resulted in any serious incidents. Kohle said Volvo would fix the problem free of charge. He declined to give details on the cost of the recall, but said it would “not be significant” for ...

Toyota Cruises Towards First Place
2007-12-27 10:43:00
Toyota Motor, whose small, fuel-efficient vehicles are reaping the benefits of soaring gas prices, raised its 2008 forecast to 9.85 million in vehicle sales, despite fears of a slowdown in its key U.S. market. Toyota’s forecasts could put it ahead of General Motors, the world’s largest automaker by vehicle sales. General Motors hasn’t given a forecast for next year, but estimated 9.2 million in vehicle sales in 2007. In 1978, the U.S. automaker created an unbeaten record when it sold 9.55 million units. As demand slows down in the U.S. and European markets, global automakers are counting on markets like India, China and Russia, where rising incomes are leading to high growth rates. Toyota Motor opened a factory in St. Petersburg last week and estimates a 25% rise in Russia sales next year. Toyota, the maker of models like the Camry and Prius hybrids, estimated 2.27 million in vehicle sales in its home market of Japan and 7.58 million in overseas sales for the next year. In Asi...
