Let the Complaining Begin
2007-03-13 00:00:00 First off, let me apologize for the preachy tone of this post. We’re barely two months into 2007 and not anywhere near the beginning of the summer’s peak driving season, yet gas prices are up over 15% for the year and there’s not a whole lot of relief in sight. Unfortunately, if last summer is any indication, it ... More About: Comp , Plain
More Pain at the Pump for Californian Drivers?
2007-03-13 00:00:00 Despite already having some of the highest gas prices in the continental United States, it seems things are about to get much worse for California n drivers. According to an article published in the Vallejo Times Herald, some analysts are predicting gas prices to jump anywhere between 20 and 30 cents over the next few days, ... Department of Energy (and the Obvious) Predicting Higher Gas Prices
2007-03-11 00:00:00 According to a recent article published on BusinessWeek.com, the Department of Energy is forecasting higher gas prices to continue to increase throughout the spring and into the summer, falling just short of the record highs set last summer. It’s nice to see that one of our Federal Government agencies can get something right, despite how obvious ... More About: Men , Rice , Gas Prices
Top 10 Most Creative Ways to Save Gas
2007-03-10 02:50:02 Considering the success of my Top 10 Easiest Ways to Save Gas post and the fact that the nation’s average gas price has already started making the march to $3 a gallon, I’ve decided to post additional top 10 lists dedicated to helping people save gas and increase fuel economy. Today I’m going to focus on creative ways for you to save gas. In looking at this list, I don’t think any of these tips will cause a dramatic jump in your car’s fuel economy when taken individually, however if you were to combine all ten of these tips, I don’t think it would be unreasonable for you to achieve a noticeable increase in gas mileage. And on that note, here are the Top 10 Most Creative Ways to Save Gas: Turn down the music. I think this might be one of my all-time favorite gas saving tips. Think about it; how many times have you been listening to a song on the radio with the volume turned all the way up and then you look down at the speedometer and you’...
Canada Will Be the US’ Top Oil Supplier For the Next 20 Years
2007-03-10 02:50:02 It looks like America’s fear of being dependent on the Middle East and other unstable regions throughout the world to supply us with oil may be eased by our friendly Cana dian neighbors. Thanks in large part to the massive amounts of crude oil found in the Oil Sands of Alberta, Canada overtook Saudi Arabia as America’s single largest supplier of crude oil during 2005, and will apparently hold the top spot for at least the next two decades. According to Guy Caruso, administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, “the projects in Fort McMurray and Athabasca [Canada] will ensure that Canada will remain in the top spot until 2030.” This news comes on the heels of a State of the Union address that was partially centered around the idea that America needs to dramatically reduce its dependence on foreign (particularly Middle Eastern) oil. And, thanks to the fact our Government certainly isn’t making nice with many of the world’s largest oil... More About: Nada , The N
People Don’t Care About “Terror Free” Gas
2007-03-10 02:50:02 A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a couple of gas stations across the United States that were marketing themselves by selling “Terror Free ” gasoline. Essentially, the stations were claiming to sell gasoline that was produced from oil that originated from countries and/or companies that don’t support or fund terrorism. It certainly seemed like a pretty catchy gimmick, and if it was true, would probably be something worth supporting. That being said, would the idea be enough to get people to change their buying habits? Apparently not. According to a survey on Daily Fuel Economy Tip, most people seem to not particular care about “Terror Free” gasoline. When asked, “would you go out of your way to buy ‘Terror Free’ gasoline?,” 52% of respondents stated they would do so only if the gasoline was less expensive, 33% stated they would go out of their way to purchase the gas and 14% stated they wouldn’t go out of their way to p... American vs Japanese - Truck/SUV Gas Mileage
2007-03-10 02:50:02 Today’s post is a follow on to my article which compared the estimated gas mileage between America ’s and Japan ’s top ten most fuel efficient vehicles of 2007. As expected, the most fuel efficient Japanese cars blew away their American counterparts, thanks in part to having more hybrids and by just simply by producing smaller, lighter vehicles. So, I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and switch gears and look at the types of vehicles American manufacturers do best - trucks and SUVs. I figured that by looking at the types of vehicles American auto makers are best known for, maybe I would be able to find somewhere where the Fords, Chevys, etc., weren’t lagging behind (in terms of gas mileage) in comparison to their Japanese counterparts. I gathered the following data from fueleconomy.gov, and I tried my best to get both a mid-sized and full-sized truck and SUV for each of the major car companies. Please keep in mind, this data is a generalization an... More About: Truck
Fuel Economy Log Weeks 25 - 37
2007-03-10 02:50:02 Needless to say, I have been very laid back when it has come publishing my fuel economy logs. I’ve received a couple of emails from people asking me if I’ve stopped publishing the logs because I’ve started to get worse gas mileage and I didn’t want to seem like a hypocrite. Thankfully, this isn’t the case. I’m still getting great gas mileage and the only explanation is that I’ve been too lazy to translate my data to words. So now that I have a lazy Sunday afternoon to myself, I thought it would be a great idea to go ahead and update my fuel economy logs. Over the past four months I have driven 7,212.70 miles, used 221.22 gallons of gas and paid, on average, $2.20 per gallon, all of which adds up to an average fuel economy of 32.60 miles per gallon, which is about 12.43% higher than my car’s usual average. This 12.43% increase in gas mileage equates to a savings of roughly $.27 per gallon, which over the past four months has equated ... More About: Economy , Fuel , Fuel Economy , Week , Econ
Top 12 Greenest Cars For 2007 - No American Cars
2007-03-10 02:50:02 In piggybacking off of yesterday’s post comparing America n and Japanese gas mileage for 2007 cars, today’s post will cover the top 12 greenest cars for 2007, according to CNET.com. In what may or may not come as a somewhat mild surprise, of the top 12 greenest cars, none - zero, zip, zilch, nada - are produced by American manufacturers. That means the world’s number one car manufacturer (General Motors) and the number three car manufacturer (Ford) do not have a single car represented in this list. No wonder these guys are rapidly losing market share to foreign auto makers. Aside from gas mileage, the two other major items that were taken into consideration when determining whether or not a car would make the “green list” were its overall carbon emissions as well as its curb weight. Anyway, Honda and Toyota led the way, with each manufacturer having four cars in the top 12. Hyundai came in third with two cars and Nissan and Kia tied for fourth with one... American vs. Japanese Fuel Economy for 2007 Cars
2007-03-10 02:50:02 Well, it seems about time to go ahead and revisit an old topic - the apparent huge discrepancy between America n and Japan ese automobiles. I last looked at this issue back in October of 2006 when I compared the top five most fuel efficient vehicles of 2006 for each group of cars. While the overall result wasn’t shocking - Japanese cars got better gas mileage - the distance between the two groups of cars absolutely blew me away. For the 2007 comparison, I expanded the pool to the top 10 most fuel efficient vehicles in the thought that maybe my numbers from 2006 were a bit skewed due to the extraordinary gas mileage by the Toyota Prius and the now deceased Honda Insight. And, just for fun, I also found the Japanese’s 11 through 20 most fuel efficient vehicles, just in case their top 10 vehicles blew away the American competition for a second straight year. I gathered all of my gas mileage information from the United States government’s website regarding gas mileage a... More About: Economy , Cars , Fuel
The Top 10 Easiest Ways to Save Gas
2007-03-10 02:50:02 With the recent drop in oil and gas prices, I’m sure many of us have forgotten the good driving habits we learned when we were paying $1 more a gallon of gas. It’s amazing how quickly we forget to pay attention to our gas mileage when our gas bill is cut by a third. Now that the summer’s ridiculously high gas prices are pretty much right around the corner, I figured it was time for a refresher course on the best/easiest ways for you to either not use gas or get better gas mileage when you do have to drive. So, without further ado, here are the Top 10 Easiest Ways for You to Save Gas and Get Better Gas Mileage: Don’t drive if you don’t have to. This one comes first because it’s simply the most obvious; if you don’t drive you’re going to save gas. If you can get away with walking or riding a bike to get where you need to go, by all means, do it. If you do have to drive, try and car pool, ride share or mass transit. If you can get a...
Here We Go Again…
2007-03-10 02:50:02 In what is seems to be an annual event, gas prices have risen above $3 in parts of California, Hawaii and New York, and are increasing rapidly everywhere else in the United States. Hopefully you’ve stockpiled some of the money you saved during sub-$2.50 gas, because it looks like you’re going to need it this summer. During the past month, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has increased by $.35, from $2.20 to $2.55. This represents an increase of over 15%. And considering we have yet to switch over to summer blend gasoline (which contain extra additives to help with smog) and we’re nowhere near peak driving season, it looks like we are probably on the verge of another record breaking summer. In looking at the gas price chart for the past 12 months, we’re currently right around the same prices levels as we were experiencing a year ago - and we all know what happened to gas prices as we hit the spring and summer during 2006.... Celebrities Show Up to Pre-Oscar Parties in “Green Cars”
More articles from this author:2007-03-10 02:50:02 So, you think The Green Movement is in full effect? Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio announce that the Oscars have gone green, An Inconvenient Truth wins the Academy Award for best documentary and plenty of stars show up to Oscar parties in hybrid and electric vehicles. One of these Oscar parties was Global Green Pre-Oscar party, where several of the stars in attendance showed up in either hybrid or electric cars. Of note, there was at least one sighting of a Tesla Roadster and a sighting of a Toyota Plug-in Prius, which gets over 125 miles per gallon over the first hundred miles after being charged. Because many of these technologies are relatively new, they also tend to be relatively expensive for us common folk, which is probably why it always seems that high profile celebrities are the first to get to try these cool new cars out. For example, Tom Hanks getting a new electric Scion. Eh, on second thought, he can keep that one. But, I guess aside from the monetary reasons, it mak...
